      @@jon.schnee I don't think the engine take role much unless if it have other features from renderer or engine itself. Mostly art style made by dev. I mean look at tf2, zelda wind waker and dishonored 1. Game may be clunky and the graphics may be too cartoony to some but the artstyle is beautiful. Me1 is more of "too perfect it feel like hell" type of atmosphere and story so the artstyle must be like its way too perfect to be true. Plus the game is mostly baked in and that's why the game run well in its time

    Any% "pro-glitch-use" speedruns like this one are the kinds of runs that give me the most appreciation for what a legitimate, high-accuracy, tightly controlled skill speedrunning really is.
    It's one thing to play through a game quickly, but it's a whole other beast to memorize and master several kinds of nearly (or fully) frame-perfect maneuvers, how to use them properly, when and where to use them, and then to use them to navigate an entire game perfectly without messing up a single one, taking advantage of every possible opportunity to shave off a tenth or hundredth of a single second everywhere it's possible to do so according to an entire community's understanding of the game's programming.
    It's truly impressive.

    • @dakotamorrison7752
      @dakotamorrison7752 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes that is massively impressive, and I can appreciate and acknowledge the skill needed to do so, but that doesn't change the fact that you are using glitches, which depends on the game, the console, and the ability to react quick enough. I have played this game on Xbox 360, and encountered none of these glitches, so I don't know if they even exist on that console. Plus there is no way to switch controls to a hot bar, or anything like that, so if you want to do something you have to press the correct buttons, which is harder then just switching to the scroll wheel. And even then I don't know if I can call this a Speedrun, Because he just skips most things and ends up breaking the game. I noticed that when he was hit by the cop In an animation that would usually make you be pushed back and stall you for a second, that nothing of the sort happened. It could still be a Speedrun, I just don't know if I personally can call it that, it just seems too dependant on glitches, instead of going through the whole game, fights and all, and seeing how fast you can push yourself to complete it. This is my first time seeing a Speedrun with so many glitches that let you skip so much, so I'm a little confused, and, won't lie, disappointed. Especially because he is doing it while using desktop, and the moves he makes relied on him using the scroll wheels or a hot bar, or a quick key or something like that. I play games to enjoy not only the scenery they make, but also the world they build in it's entirety, story included. So to see most of it skipped or broken in such a way does kinda disappoint me, even if I do find it interesting that the game had that many glitches that conveniently aid the player.

      @@dakotamorrison7752 If you don't like any% which is the entire point to allow glitches. Then, just watch a no glitch speedrun? any% isn't for everyone.

    • @dakotamorrison7752
      @dakotamorrison7752 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Faunarr I never said I didn't like it, I said I was confused and disappointed. This is the first time I have seen a speed run that took glitches to this level of extreme just to beat a game as quickly as possible. because it's the first time I have seen a speed run use glitches to such an extreme I was and frankly kinda still am confused if this could be considered a legitimate speed run, because this seems like something that could only be done in PC, and also seems like they just had a flawed version of the game with more glitches than normal. I played and beat this game within an hour or two on my second or third try, so I was interested in how fast others beat the game so I searched up speed runs and found this one. I'm gonna be honest it's been a while since I made that comment so I can't remember everything that day, but if I do remember right, when I searched for speed runs of the game, most of them just seemed like regular old gameplay to me. Especially because they didn't seem to do much better than I did on my second or third play through. Then I found this and it was the only one that seemed like someone was legitimately trying to finish the game as fast as possible. And so when they did most of the speed run using glitches that took them outside the map border to avoid basically everything, it kinda disappointed me, but only slightly. And just saying this now, when I watched this video I didn't notice the any% in the title. And even if I did, before this comment I didn't know what any% meant so I still wouldn't have known.

    • @Bunny99s

      As I'm an old school gamer and software developer, I have never heard that term for the left over frame buffer remains. I've found an article calling it "Hall of mirrors effect" from 2006. Though what was mentioned there is not really correct. The article said that the game tries to render an image of something that is technically nothing. In reality to save fill rate on the GPU a lot of the older engines do not clear the frame buffer at all at the start of a new frame since "usually" everything is overwritten anyways with the next frame. So only the depth buffer is cleared. However if the rendered geometry has a "hole", so nothing would be rendered there, you simply see the old content of the framebuffer. Of course when you pan around, the location of that hole changes and that's why most of the time you see a copy of the geometry next to the hole since that geometry was drawn there the last frame(s).
      This effect often gets much more erratic when double buffering is used. Since there are essentially two framebuffers that are used in an alternating fashion, one buffer essentially contains the current displayed image and the other one is used to draw the next image. When rendering into the off-screen buffer has finished, the buffers are swapped. That way we can avoid screen tearing as we only present the monitor a complete rendered image. Though since we constantly flipping between those two buffers, if there's an area that was not overwritten in both buffers, you get a quick flicker between the contents of two frames, even when you do not move your camera.
      In addition to that, post processing effects which are usually applied to the whole frame buffer can cause those overbright glowing areas.
      A lot newer engines usually clear the framebuffer before they start rendering. Though this can still be disabled in most engines. On modern hardware the fill rate isn't that important anymore. Mobile devices are still the low end of the spectrum. Though even in this sector the hardware gets faster and faster.

    Such a great video bro!
    Mirror's Edge was the first game that i tried to complete as fast as possible. That time lays 11 years in the past but speed running in general is something that i am enjoying alot. The last Mirror's Edge run i have seen was the "glitchless" run from SGDQ2017. So glad to see mechanics like the hint climbs. It just boggles my mind that i've never tried this back then haha
    I can also join the other comments about the "new tech" pop-up. Such a great idea! There was alot of explanations but that's really helpful for everyone that has never played or seen a Mirror's Edge run. Thanks to you and Voetim :)
    Stay safe and home homies!

      @calypso The fascination with pushing the frontier of computer graphics is the reason we have video games at all. The industry would not have come up with this idea were it not for programmers being enthusiastic about graphics in the later half of the 20th century. Graphics were the initial driving force for video games. Everything else came later.
      All of the artsy hoo-haw about style, all of the "deep emotional narratives," were an addendum to the urge of programmers to simulate reality with limited tools.
      So yes, people get excited at the idea of pushing graphical technology a step further. And they should.

    • @delphicdescant
      @delphicdescant 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @calypso It's fine that games are made that aren't graphically cutting-edge. What I'm saying is that all video games exist thanks to the few that *do* push boundaries in graphics and/or simulation.
      Graphically advanced games are like pioneers, opening up the way for later games to exist that just want to tell a story or do some other thing without worrying about the graphics.
      We look forward to ever better graphics because we're excited about what new kinds of experiences can be created once our current limitations are overcome.
