Previously unreleased recordings from pioneering fusion band Weather Report playing live in the 1970s are streaming from the late Joe Zawinul's estate in the group's 40th anniversary year. This spring's 1975 Live in Berlin set caught the band beginning to sense its power over a rock audience. Live in Offenbach, from September 1978, features the band that included bass-guitar star Jaco Pastorius. It also included Peter Erskine, a shrewd drummer who helped reintroduce a cooler jazz feel after the critical hammering that had greeted the overcooked, studio-made Mr Gone earlier that year. Stripped down to a quartet, the band sound engaged (particularly the sometimes enigmatic saxist Wayne Shorter), and after the standard early workouts on their hits, they get surprisingly loose and open. Shorter exhibits Sonny Rollins's muscular solo-sax whimsicality on the standard Thanks for the Memory, and Zawinul's wealth of acoustic-piano improv ideas burst out of I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good, while Birdland has a bright, rough-and-ready energy. Pastorius's driving basslines thunder through the music, even if his solo spots tend to emit more heat than light. It's a vivid show from a WR period sometimes considered short of inspiration.

I'm sure people have seen this, but do you see that Zawinul has his right handed keyboard set up like an accordian. It's tuned backwards. If he goes left, the pitch goes up, he goes right, the pitch goes down. What really wigs me out is that he later plays unison lines on two keyboards. One tuned like an accordian, one tuned like a piano. I pointed this out a long time ago but nobody has commented on it. I know he started as an accordian player, but the unison stuff would wig me out. What a GREAT musicain. I remember seeing this tour at the Beacon in NYC. One of the greatest bands of all time.

+k m venezia I noticed because he was playing the keyboard with his right hand in what would be the bass register and I thought hello, thats high .If he plays further up the keys only dogs will be able to hear it. Joe was an absolute genius ( not just because he was playing ass backward ) and so was Wayne Shorter. I don't think there is another so called jazz fusion band that comes close to W.R Plus they had one or two brilliant bass players, drummers and percussionists at various times.

+John Barrett They had THE best bassist of all time, In The Name Of Jaco, having so much fun with his buddy Peter. Joe is astonishing, Wayne so humble, (making a band together just after playing for Art, Cannonbal and Miles...) these musicians are not really human, and we can easily say thats the best Jazz/Fusion band ever, with this line up :)

He has a funny story when first recording with Miles......Shorter kept a notebook of music he was working on -- and never let it out of his possession. During a session break -- Miles began flipping through the pages, asked Shorter about the compositions and as they wrapped up for the day, said: "Tomorrow, bring the notebook!"

aye, it's the mindless corporates who took over the music industry and think only crap that will make the most should be promoted, kind of stupid because it all makes money, lets face it, simple sells and as the world gets dumber so does the music but in an ever growing population everything has its place to be and if music was taught and encouraged at an early age instead of sports the world just might become smarter

Mens sana in corpore sano, a sound mind in a sound body. Don't really agree this whole music instead of sports thing, but I really think that music is something that should be encouraged which I fell it is but not everyone has or can ever get a good sense of rhythm and music. Also heard that pastorius himself was a real kicker for football/soccer when he was a kid and that it he got great support from his father, but this didn't make him any dumber or less talented when it came to music.

Of course, Jaco was as much the star as anyone else in the band. The whole concert was awesome with an incredible sound system and an amazing start and finish. What is the real nature, the heart or the soul of WR ? I mean, how is the first, spontaneous feeling that we have just mention their name ? Could say we that in "one" word ?
Surely, there had been a "before" Jaco and an "with" Jaco (and also an after, sadly....). Jaco IS one of the most beautiful music sound ever - one of the most magnificent and astonishing human invention - and we all listened and discovered it in 1976's Black Market !
Everybody knows that WR moved from avant-garde to groove, a rhythmic band with two percussionists (and always on their top ! Thompson, Alias, Badrena, Acuna, Moreira and so). Jaco playing for.....three (melody, harmony, rhythm) one drummer was enough.
By the way, I wonder how felt Wayne (one of my all time favorite artist) with that kind of "madcap" on his side......

This is THE line up in my opinion, certainly live anyway The rapport that Shorter had with Erskine was amazing; I think not having percussion highlighted the other players better; Jaco was Jaco. Zawinul knew these players were heavyweights so it gave him the confidence just to weave in and out as he likes to. The best of the best.

From sticks on hollowed out logs to the revolution of the 17th and 18th century symphonies to Bix thru Miles and Coltrane, all musical form culminated with the advent of Zawinal, Shorter, and Pastorious. They were the summit of musical expression. The mountain has been crossed and we are the other side sliding downward. There can never be another Beethoven's 5th, or another birdland. We are blessed who heard it and got it. I truly despair for those who didn't. Rest in peace Joe and Jaco. Heaven is a sweeter place with your tones.

The music was rocking to crescendo and he flew over huge speakers landing on kill button. People went crazy, jumping on seats, falling on ground etc. Best of memories. He was certainly a master of the multi keyboard set up. that was the the way it was done back then. In rock you had Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson, In Jazz there was Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and of course Joe Zawinul. Zawinul though was unique among all of these and maybe the best at using his two hands almost independently. I was lucky enough to see them play on multiple occasions. The first time I ever heard of Jaco was at a Weather Report Concert. They were touring with Shakti as their opening act. (what a night). Never noticed that the tuning on the keyboard to his right was different. As I watch this I'm not convince it was, but if anyone was capable of doing it, it's JZ.

Weather Report was one of the very few groups I missed seeing live. And I attended concerts every other weekend. I'd catch a live concert, then off weekends I'd buy records and comic books. Everyone felt I was wasting time and money. As it turned out, this became a very profitable ritual. Not only did I see concerts that can never be replicated, but the collections became enormous financial assets. Someone recently paid my brother $3000 for a book I bought for .50 cents! Unfortunately, my albums have yet to increase in value. WR is the FF of the music world.
