Going from "Bolero" to "Watermelon" is one of the greatest transitions I've ever heard in a Zappa show. It's breathtakingly beautiful. Shame that this unbelievable band imploded, only 17 shows after this...

That version of Bolero takes me back to 1990. That summer a friend loaned me "The Best Band You've Never Heard" and a week later I was hooked. I drove my family, friends and neighbors crazy. I would blast that CD as loud as my stereo could handle. Over and over all summer long. After that I bought Joe's Garage then Zoot Allures. Then I found, music disease heartbreak they all go together!
I saw him in Birmingham UK on this tour. I was 12 and had just discovered Zappa. Got my brother to take me for my birthday. I feel so incredibly privileged for getting the chance to see him live before he stopped touring forever. 33 years later I am still discovering new beauty in his music and wisdom in his words. He was the best kind of human.
I went also to this show with my older brother in Ahoy Rotterdam NL , 30 years later we went together to a Dweezil Zappa concert, one of the last things we could do together before he died from ALS, may they rest in peace together. I miss them both, lucky we still have the music
Playing music 55 years of my life, listening to this brings back the awestruck feelings I had when I first heard The Mothers of Invention!! Sadly I’m not playing anymore but music is still an important part of my life.
First heard FZ and the Mothers in Beruit, Lebanon in 1968. The album was "Freak Out," which is exactly what I did. (that big pipe of hash mighta had something to do with it!) Been a freak ever since.😛 Killer version of "Sharleena!"
His ability to lift his bandmates to the highest performance level possible is still the most outrageous stage feat ever! Infinity was always lurking inside the band as FZ sculpted it's features. Frank is forever Tops in my Book.
Not a sheet of music to be seen but they are able to remember every cord every note of this Rock Orchestration ! Superb . You will always be remembered Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention .

Just before going into 'Happy Days are Here Again', Frank says, "Is everybody happy?". That was the catchphrase of 1920s band leader Ted Lewis. Zappa knows his shit.
nice i never picked up on that, lots of little things like that in his shows, during punkys whips (live 76/77) Bozzio says isnt it romantic and then the melody of isnt it romanric from Ella Fitzgerald 1957 is played for a few bars, man he was the best
Jorge Navarro, you cannot even imagine how much happiness you bring to us, Fran Zappa’s zealots! The quality of this video is amazing. i just want to express my gratitude to you for sharing Zappa’s matchless music and his band full of great musicians!
FZ is one of the greatest musical geniuses of any era. His quick wit and satire come through in his lyrics, and the musical composition can at times, make the great composers envious. I miss you Frank, but I'm so glad your music lives on!
Chad Wackerman now is considered one of the best five drummers in the world. I saw him with Alan Holdsworth. He is truly excellent. Anyone that played with Zappa had to be. Anyone!!!
When Frank was asked about who influences him he said his own music. But if I had to name a person it would Allan Holdsworth, he's doing really interesting stuff with the guitar.
I was lucky enough to see him (Chad) plays with Alan in Paris New Morning, with Alan Pasqua, wonderfull night, i even talked with Alan a little bit, a really nice guy !
Even though Terry Bozzio is probably his most charismatic and well-known drummer, I always thought that Chad had the tougher gig, especially evident with the '88 band and this show.
Epic live performance and I dig the t-shirt. It's a Titties and Beer, isn't it? Very futuristic. I dig the primal aesthetic. But seriously folks: Que un concierto! Thanks, Jorge Navarro.

good for you bud. Zappa and anyone he seen fit to play with him are pure. I got turned on a little bit older than you by some fellow friends, and I'm still finding new stuff I've never heard and love
OMG, not sure how I never stumbled on this before. As a Zappa fan from the early 80s, this is music and satirical comedy of the highest order. I have ALWAYS told anyone who will listen that Frank Zappa is a musical genius and one of the greatest guitarists ever. People look at me like, " Who?" and I just roll my eyes and say go look it up. Sadly, he left us before he was finished making us think real hard about everything but in a funny way. Also, his concerts are masterpieces. How can these guys go for over 2hrs without missing a beat???? Practice makes perfect and this was perfect. Thanks Jorge for putting up such a great concert that sounds and looks amazing.
I can hear the influences of Miles Davis and Sun Ra here. Damned fine music and this recording is a gem. Release quality. Frank at the pinnacle of his career with a band that's in perfectly sync. How they didn't use charts is mind boggling, but Frank was known to rehearse every detail to perfection, and this is the result. Thanks for giving this musical treasure to the public Jorge - I am grateful.
on top of everything else that is so fantastic about this show, Bobby Martin and Ike Willis are absolutely world class vocalists! it should be illegal to have that much talent gathered together on one stage. thx Frank!! and you too Jorge!!!
Fantastic touch by Frank Zappa to learn his introductory speech in a different language. He actually saluted the audience both in Spanish and in Catalan, which shows Zappa's interest in the multiculturalism of the land IMO. Whoever enjoyed this concert back in its day was blessed.
I am 20 years old as of writing, and Zappa is one of my dad's favorites. I also did a pop culture research paper on him and how much he had contributed to the counterculture movements (which was a lot). The most inspiring thing he did, I believe, was getting young adults educated on registering to vote. This is what America needs to focus on more if they want government to be run OUR way. But I digress, all I am trying to say is that Zappa really did do a lot of things to be hailed a hero on untouched ideas of his time. My generation needs a Zappa. A Frank Zappa.

He brought rock, jazz, and pop to savant music, as high as classic contemporary music. Genius here. And incredible musicians. Good show, and good sound here thank you.
Scott Thunes was clearly the driving engine through this concert. It's just incredible following his playing through these shows and it's clear to me why he was clonemeister.
I swear... everything Frank played in this performance was amazing! His fingers played that guitar like I never heard him anywhere else. It sounded so polished and visualised.

Listening to this makes me feel nostalgic for a remarkable time in music history. Honestly, nobody compares. He was brilliant and he surrounded himself with brilliance. In the 1st part of his solo in "The Black Page", after the single string riffing on the E and A string, I wonder how he did the low (C below E?) tone? He wasn't touching the tremolo bar. Neck bend? Reminds me of Geddy Lee's " Bytor " sound.

Holy cow, what a great band. Of course Frank is great and his solos go deeper every time, but I can't get over it how tight the band is. Must have been murderous rehearsals ... Ive seen concerts of five setups of the Mothers, but I seem to have missed this one. Thank you for that upload, this stuff makes me really happy!
The audio improvement is much, much appreciated. I just discovered a gentleman named Christopher Hazard on you tube who has used some amazing new AI technology coupled with the extreme processing power necessary to take 480p, 720p etc old video footage and upscale with truly spectacular results. Even on the saddest days, a well-orchestrated Frank Zappa concert will always bring a smile to my face. Thanks for posting.

Ohhhh yes
@@huesicos Your welcome, today is a happy day
I saw him in Birmingham UK on this tour.
Amen brother !!!! ❤😪❤
We were there too that day.
Playing music 55 years of my life, listening to this brings back the awestruck feelings I had when I first heard The Mothers of Invention!! Sadly I’m not playing anymore but music is still an important part of my life.
I am in the same position, Bro! I can't play much anymore...Good Luck to yoi!
First heard FZ and the Mothers in Beruit, Lebanon in 1968. The album was "Freak Out," which is exactly what I did. (that big pipe of hash mighta had something to do with it!) Been a freak ever since.😛 Killer version of "Sharleena!"
Absolutely one of the best Music performance of all times!!! Dear Frank I miss you so much...
His ability to lift his bandmates to the highest performance level possible is still the most outrageous stage feat ever! Infinity was always lurking inside the band as FZ sculpted it's features. Frank is forever Tops in my Book.
that's because the torture never stopped
Not a sheet of music to be seen but they are able to remember every cord every note of this Rock Orchestration ! Superb . You will always be remembered Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention .
I was just going to post exactly that! :-)It's almost at an unrehearsable level!

Perfect 😍
Just before going into 'Happy Days are Here Again', Frank says, "Is everybody happy?". That was the catchphrase of 1920s band leader Ted Lewis. Zappa knows his shit.
that's a fact, thanks
nice i never picked up on that, lots of little things like that in his shows, during punkys whips (live 76/77) Bozzio says isnt it romantic and then the melody of isnt it romanric from Ella Fitzgerald 1957 is played for a few bars, man he was the best
Saw Zappa on this tour in Birmingham UK and it was a great concert, even after 35 years it's still in my memory.
I was there NEC...👍
Jorge Navarro, you cannot even imagine how much happiness you bring to us, Fran Zappa’s zealots! The quality of this video is amazing. i just want to express my gratitude to you for sharing Zappa’s matchless music and his band full of great musicians!
Encantado de compartirlo y que lo disfrutes.
@@paulbyrnesrmt2929 Alan passed away a couple years ago.
@@Mike383HK yeah I know. Wish I got to see him
I was lucky enough to see him (Chad) plays with Alan in Paris New Morning, with Alan Pasqua, wonderfull night, i even talked with Alan a little bit, a really nice guy !

Younglings like you are hope for mankind.

We shall never hear anything like his music ever and it was and is beautifull
I got to know Frank Zappa's work back in 2007 and this guy changed the way I listen to music. Thank you very much, Genius!

You´re welcom Cletus!
I think I read somewhere Bobby Martin has a 3 octave range, and his main instrument is a French Horn ....
@@sea6bear Yeah, as well as keyboards and vocals, he also plays trumpet, French horn, and saxophone.
To be fair, Bobby Martin is by miles the best vocalist to be featured on Zappa. And yep, way way better than Ike.
Should be illegal? I'm pretty sure you mean it should be mandatory.
Fantastic touch by Frank Zappa to learn his introductory speech in a different language. He actually saluted the audience both in Spanish and in Catalan, which shows Zappa's interest in the multiculturalism of the land IMO. Whoever enjoyed this concert back in its day was blessed.
This is one of the best live shows I've seen on TH-cam, real ecstasy.

Saw this band in Brighton UK in 1988. Best band I ever saw
pobinr the best band I never saw in my life!
Not surprised at all.
Neux I was 20 when I saw him for the one and only time in 88 in London. Zappa is unique and unequaled🤗
@@alanday7583 Hey Alan, did you have already at that time the feeling you were in front of something unique and unrepeatable in the History of music and, as we say, a living legend?
Dweezil and his band is a delight.
@@Claytone-Records But they just do the existing music. There are some artists, like John Zorn and Animal Collective, who are as musically creative as Zappa, but don't have much political impact.
Hickory McCay, Some have called Dweezil’s band a cover band. I saw them live and they were so much more. Even George Duke said that D’s band outperformed some of Zappa’s outfits. Have to agree on the political clout aspect, however.

@@absolutelypositively It's a bit of a stretch to say 'everybody' underrated him and 'most' people don't understand genius. Frank is famous and highly regarded as a guitarist and composer. Several books , thousands of articles and interviews, films and documentaries and he is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There are so many talented people playing his music now highlighting his mastery of melody and rhythm. It does get any better than this. Frank's guitar is completely on another level.
In the 1st part of his solo in "The Black Page", after the single string riffing on the E and A string, I wonder how he did the low (C below E?) tone? He wasn't touching the tremolo bar. Neck bend? Reminds me of Geddy Lee's " Bytor " sound.

not one dull moment in the whole performance....quality.
Holy cow, what a great band. Of course Frank is great and his solos go deeper every time, but I can't get over it how tight the band is. Must have been murderous rehearsals ...
