    I completely agree with you about CPM-3V being the better choice for a heavy chopper. Magnacut is great for smaller EDC fixed blades or a multipurpose belt knife, but 3V's toughness really shines in big, heavy knives.

      Can I ask why ,not have any exp with magnacut

    • @ParrishJMiller
      @ParrishJMiller หลายเดือนก่อน

      @srikanthm.r9465, Magnacut offers excellent corrosion resistance with good toughness and edge retention. With a proper heat treatment, it provides a very good balance of these three attributes, but it is not the best at any of them (although it's close to the best in terms of corrosion resistance.) Typically, balance is important for EDC knives because they encounter a wide range of environments and uses. For large choppers, toughness is usually the priority, which is why CPM-3V is a better choice.

      I disagree. I'm so tired of keeping all my 1095 and 3v blades oiled all the time. All I buy now is magnacut... And 3v is nothing to get excited about unless you use your knife to battle cars. And all my 3v blades go dull just as fast as my aus10 blades do. So, I have no idea what people are talking about when they say 3v gets superior edge retention.

      I have a Benchmade Puukko 200 in 3V. I got it for about $120, blade is great, but the sheath was junk. I don't buy them for the sheath though, so I'm ok with it. I'll get literally any other sheath on Etsy, and it'll be great.

    • @johnnyeas1431
      @johnnyeas1431 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Nah. 1095 is super tough when properly heat treated. Just look at Esee knives in 1095. They are so tough that even joeX approves of them.... 3V is way beyond tough. If you're planning on sword fighting, then I'd say 3v is the way to go. Other than that, it's just another metal that rusts easily.... I live by the ocean. So anything that isn't stainless will rust here.. And even trees contain moisture. So 3v, 1095 steels always have to be oiled if you don't want oxidation to occur.

    oof. i was REALLY excited abt this knife in magnacut until i saw that it was $350. there is quite literally NO REASON that changing NOTHING BUT THE STEEL shoukd up the price by over $200. magnacut is more expensive than 1095 but the bk2 is going from maybe $3 worth of 1095 to MAYBE $15-20 worth of magnacut IF THAT. they’re smoking crack with that price.

      I just checked what a foot of 1/4” x2” 1095 and 1/4” x2”magnacut cost from my supplier here in Canada. The 1095 is 20 dollars cad. The magnacut is 124cad. It is significantly more expensive and the heat treat is also way more complex. It’s not something I can do in my own shop and I need to outsource that step for magnacut adding cost. I doubt ka bar/Becker has this issue though. So in general yes it is significantly more expensive. But I don’t think it’s 200 dollars more expensive personally

      @ lmfao there’s not $100 worth of magnacut in this knife. a $100 magnacut bullet is 2 feet long and 2 inches wide. you could get two entire knives out of a single 2 foot bar of magnacut for $100. even if there was magically $100 worth of steel, please tell me where they pulled the other $130 extra they’re charging out of their ass? because the normal bk2 is $120.

      I don't know why people keep peddling this. The ideal hardness of magnacut is a range between 60 HRC and 65 HRC. This per Larrin Thomas, the creator of magnacut. As the hardness goes up, the toughness goes down. Magnacut does not magically ignore the laws of physics.

    I have a couple of Bk's but they always felt like I was holding a brick in my medium hands so they haven't seen much use.. Never tried alternate scales though. I have a couple of magnacut blades so far, all smaller edc style blades, and love the steel. I'd go with the AK over the Bk from what I've seen.

    Great vid Aaron. Man there is truly no such thing as a perfect knife. I just got the Rokka Knife that you reviewed a couple years ago and it’s so good at everything including food prep but they should have lowered the Rockwell because just battening some hard wood today made small chips in the edge. If they ever upgrade the steel or lower Rockwell then I will buy it again so quick. It would also be nice in 5-6 inches to span the bigger wood pieces

    Great video, and I agree with you. Becker is a bit late to this game for me. I already own multiple knives of theirs in 1095. Additionally, I have already purchased several different knives in Magnacut. At this stage I simply don't need another. Finally, in fairness to Becker...I would have probably have purchased this knife instead of the 1095 version if it were available at the very same time.

    I completely get what you're saying here, but for someone that lives in a very moist climate, I would submit to you that the KABAR Becker line - and even the BK2 - would appeal to me in a stainless steel blade. So, Magnacut Steel is like gold here because of it's ability to withstand corrosion. Personally, I love Magnacut which is very useful for purposes, but it's very expensive, so from that standpoint, you're absolutely right.
    Still, there have been many times when I've been on camping/catfishing trips during the summer, and we stay up all night fishing, and when we get back we are so exhausted from the trip that our equipment has to be able to withstand moisture which it will undoubtedly be exposed to for extended amounts of time. I just don't have the energy to provide the maintenance these knives require being exposed to the moisture here. Indeed, I woke up the next day from one such trip to find my beloved BK2 covered in rust from just an overnight trip, and we use the BK2s to process fire wood, heavier tasks associated with camping.
    We obviously don't cut bait with a BK2 or anything like that, but I would be willing to pay twice what a BK2 goes for if it was in a quality steel like S35VN. ESEE has done some of their smaller knives in S35VN, and I love them. I own the ESEE 3, ESEE 4 and ESEE Izula in S35VN steel, but I would like to see a BK2 or ESEE 6 in a quality stainless steel. Just my opinion... really enjoy your videos as always.

    I love my Korean War relic Kabar, just the way it is. A perfect fighter and all-around camp knife, for not much moola. For someone in harm's way, the best carry is on the hip opposite where their pistol is, sharp edge forward. During condition red, the scabbard strap should be unstrapped. If the occasion arises to draw the knife in defense, your off hand is instantly raised, chest high, point down, sharp edge out and ready to strike defensively to the rear or to parry a blow from the front.

    G'day Aaron, I can only imagine what the BKs 7 and 9 would go for ; )
    Mind you I'm quite happy with 1095 Cro Van on the 9. Same with the sheath and scales, (in fairness those may change). It mostly gets used as a froe or chopper and I pair it with something smaller with more finesse for "knifey" tasks, so the 2 doesn't really suit my MO to start with.
    For those that love it; concur; for that moolah, yes needs the extras to sweeten the deal. Or alternatively, yep 3V for sure, good call mate.
    I do think a thinner stock version, (perhaps with other bells and whistles), would change it enough to warrant a new model number. i.e. It wouldn't be the same animal anymore ; )
    With all the Magnacut that's already appeared and indeed into the future, you'd think the prices will come down, or at least stabalise. At this point, whilst its very good by all accounts, not sure it offers a significant "enough" benefit for the dough, over what I/we already have. Cheers Duke.

    I know I'm old school and that is okay. The reason I like KaBar and Esee (and Ontario before they closed) is precisely BECAUSE they use 1095 which remains my favorite knife steel. I also like many of the other 10xx steels. I do own knives in other steels but I do not believe that 1095 is outdated, outclassed or outdone. I don't care about Magnacut this or CPM that. I like that 1095 is fairly easy to sharpen to a ridiculously sharp edge, will hold the edge well (especially if you convex the edge), is tough and won't usually break the bank.
    I will add to your idea about what KaBar should have done for their 'premium' version and also say that they should have offered 'special edition' 1095 versions with an upgraded sheath and an exclusive Micarta handle scale pattern (maybe a different pattern than the premium version) and priced it accordingly.
    For me, though, although I really like my BK2 (and Esee 5), one thing that doesn't make sense, to me, is why they would make a quarter inch thick blade only 5 inches long. I mean, if its claim to fame is as a chopper/batoner then wouldn't it make more sense to give it, say, a 6.5 inch blade so it could span just a little more or chop just a little better? So I think that is the special release they should do -the Becker BK 5XL (or something). In 1095.

  • @Cz82
    @Cz82 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I think the existence of the demko freereign in magnacut really undercuts this one
    you do overall get more steel in the bk 2
    the rubber vs slab handles is up to personal preference but at the price the bk2 should've upgraded the handles and sheath like they did for the European s35vn version they did.
    the demko is not always available but the option from architect you gave also seems good especially if you want slab handles instead of rubber or get a reiff (pricier than the AK and the demko for sure but hey you get that warranty) . Honestly in the 4-5in blade range a lot of manufacturers are working with magnacut so you'd get the bk2 for the handleheld splitting maul factor in which case you're not considering these thinner knives lol

    If TOPS makes a Silent Hero 4 ,Idaho Hunter or Pasayten Lite Traveler in 3v or Magnacut id consider a possible upgrade of one of those knives. I don’t feel a Magnacut upgrade on any knife right now justifies the price increase over the actual usability , the cost benefit ratio is NOT high enough for the expense, it is the Carbon Fibre of knife steels. I’ll still ultimately take a properly heat treated 1095 with cerakote and Micarta first. Maybe its a good option for saltwater coastal environments ultimately.
    Just my two cents.🤘

    Hey Gideon thanks for all the amazing content. I have wanted to buy a BK2 for a while now and I was considering it for Christmas, and I got excited for the magna cut version, but i agree its to over priced. Just wanted to ask you and your audience. What you think of the BK72. Its a BK2 in CPM S35VN with micarta handles, which was an exclusive between K-Bar and Knives and Tools in Europe. Seems to have stopped production you can still get all the details if your google it. Cost was $309 or 355 depending on the version.

    I would be more interested in a 3V version for the a BK2... personally. Yes, we agree on that.
    However, I think going from .25 to .20 in width would be better... I think you would still have the essence of this knife preserved and improve versatility.
    The 52100 [1095 CroVan] steel in the regular BK2 is plenty good for this kind of knife, though. IMHO...
    I have wailed on my BK2 for a few years now. I love the BK2 knife. A firewood processing champ. Chopping is good to. You can move your grip down, where your pinky is on the bottom (3 finger grip style but the pinky is still envolved) and get another almost two inches of length... and swing with abandon with little concern of it coming out of your hand..
    KaBar seriously needs to up their sheath game, big-time. And, micarta handles, please. If they used 20% less steel with a .20 width... the price of adding those would be negligible, I would think.
    Peace...

    Got mine for 250$ plus a free civivi flipper so around 180$ for the bk82 if you factor in the free knife. I like it feels comfortable but I agree for that price better scales and a better sheath would've been more appropriate for the given price. I do forsee the price dropping when magnacut becomes more common and the market answering back. I also agree the architect knives are a killer deal.

    I think 3v would be too much of an overkill for a 1/4 inch thick knife lol, it really doesn't need that much toughness, magnacut is definitely a much better option and corrosion resistance is a bonus, but I agree they should've made g10/micarta scales and a kydex sheath. Also, about a cheaper alternative, I run Eafengrow EF-142, got it on sale for 48$. DC-53 steel, g10 handles, perfect kydex sheath. It is made in china but the value is insane, would love to see your review.

    1. excellent presentation.
    2. the skill is in the person, not the tool, of course.
    3. I probably own every knife in the Becker line. I won't say that one is "better" than the rest. Such is subjective.
    4. Ok. I have been to exotic locations in the world such as Pakistan, the Hilltribes, South America, Pakistan, Iran . . . and never had to split a log or shave hair on my arm. . . . the usual tests for survival knife. I know how to sharpen knives and change cutting edges.
    5. If I were 20 years old and not 80 years old and I truly believed that a knife company would exist forever, I would be concerned about a knife having a warranty. However, my Ek knives were made by the original company that is out business. Hey. I had lifetime brakes and that brake shop folded over a decade ago..
    6. If you want a top steel blade, go for it.
    7. I absolutely agree with you on the sheath. I have the Spartan Blades fixed blade knife you reviewed months ago . . . the best sheath on the market. The other shtf fixed blades at the computer are an Al Mar, a Kizlyar Supreme (from the Russian Federation), a Sog Government 13 and the current issue military knife of Estonia and Finland (a Pukko type knife on steroids).
