Hi Steve, appreciate the in depth review, but I'm confused. LG's website says that the 65UN7300PUF has a "Real 4K Display", which by their marketing means VA. IPS panels are indicated by "Real 4K IPS Display". Your link above says this model is IPS -- is there variation of display panels for the exact same model?
Funny that you found the IPS had better black levels in that game scene, because the rest of the time I could see the IPS purple glow in the dark areas. VA will show more glow if you go off axis more than 20 degrees, but if you are in front of it then it will have better blacks imo.

VA has better colors, close to oled and better details. How is the IPS better? Even in this video you can see that it may look darker but that is actually a bad thing. A lot of the image is not even displayed. Just stop the tekken intro video. The VA panel displayed much more detailed image then the IPS panel. A lot of the details are missing in the IPS panel. With proper calibration you can get better blacks but much more detailed image on the VA.

I definitely prefer the VA panel for gaming because the contrast is abysmal on the ips. Side by side I have compared them and blacks looked way better on the VA panel LG, could the ips being deeper during Tekken on your video be from showing them together at such side angles that VA doesn’t handle as well.? Also I have the 50un7300puf va as a spare tv; replaced a dead kdl-65w850b(loved this tv so much). Really loving the 65 Sony 900h and 65 LG CX at the moment :)

ips panels can not reach va panels. the main difference of those two panels is the contrast ratio. the ips reach up to 1600: 1, while the va panels can reach up to 6500: 1.

How're the colors on these two? Particularly the yellows? I recently purchased an LG 43UM6951, and the yellows are not accurate at all. They're a mustard/orange color, and not true yellow.

Nice video! Glad that I came across it. I'm currently in the market for a TV and feel that I'm coming closer to a decision. I liked the IPS panel better until you shined the light on it. However, I feel the glare test is not a fair assessment because the TVs aren't in the same exact position. If it's not too much trouble, how about switching them around and shine the flashlight on them again. That would be really helpful. Thank you

VA panel clearly have a Lot more contrast, 6:29 (for example) clearly the left one is VA and you'r saying that IPS has better contrast ? i don't understand . (sorry my english)

Hi Steve, so if both the 43” 7000 and 7300 models uses IPS panels, then there’s virtually no difference between them, except for the Bluetooth support and LG AI that comes with the 7300, correct?
I’m wondering about the pixel layout of the un7000 50 inch. Certain sizes of this tv have a RGBW layout. The 50 has the va panel, and I think the 55 inch has ips which I believe has the RGBW. But I don’t know about the 50 inch va panel

After looking at all of your videos I'm stuck between a Samsung t8000 and LG 7 series or 8 series of TVs. With early Black Friday deals going on I'm still deciding on which TV is the best but thanks for the videos.
What is better VA , why ? Va deeper colours and darker black, more details, just worse viewing angles but if you dont look from too many bad sides its better Contrast over angles i would vote va its besting IPS, only colour reproduction can be worse depends on quality.Also newrr VA panels have even great response times rounding 100hz. IPS is always much better viewing with more people. Its not only about black but colours. Also dont compare it to a Computer monitors its different.
I just purchased a UN7000 55” for my loft, I’m use to using an Apple TV 4K and am awaiting the new ATV to start shipping. I’m astounded by how bad Web OS is 😳, it’s so clunky and my sweet lord it is SLOW! I also have Samsung’s which I thought was bad until Web OS. My wife looked at me (who is not a techy person) asked me, when is the Apple TV coming out? 😞 If you’re in the market and want to use LG’s apps natively I do not recommend Web OS. (Firmware was updated btw).

Tech Steve Would you recommend the vizio M50Q7-H1 over the hisense H8g? (gaming priority) apparently the vizio M50Q7-H1 supports vrr, freesync. hdmi 2.1 all under $ 400. (but it does NOT support 4k/120) (4k/60 max). I think it's a good deal.
@@TechSteve check 5:29 a possible reason why the ips looks darker is because there is uneven lighting. on that frame the bezel of the va panel on the left is white(reflective) from the left all the way to the lg logo in the center. on the smaller ips panel the bezel is black(non-reflective) across the whole of the panel. maybe you can switch the panels around with the smaller ips taking the left spot and see if that changes the outcome? (the va panels is a bit bigger but the text is significantly clearer).
These videos need games like The Last Of Us, Uncharted 4, Gears 5, God Of War etc. To get a good HDR comparison or even without. Those would be the seller for me. I personally always prefer an IPS panel as they are the best on PC's which I work on 24/7. VA PC panels are very meh.

50" is the largest I can go, due to space restrictions... I wanted the 50" UN73 model but IPS looks much better than VA. And I can't get the 50" with IPS, right? I'm not sure but I think UN74 50" is IPS panel, if anyone can confirm this? 🤔
@@TechSteve do you think there's really much of a difference between IPS and VA for casual gamers and just someone who's gonna watch Netflix? It'll be in a room that doesn't get much sunlight so kind of dark, but not as dark as a cinema room for example. And can you record live TV onto a USB with the UN73? Friend, are you sure about the order of the panels? Wouldn't it be the first IPS model and the second VA? Look at 4:25 and 4:30 the brightness level. And at 5:30 the black level.

@@1.14kWithoutContent what about UN74006? LG told me it has pretty much the same low input lag(around 10). Cant seem to find un7300 here in my country but i’ll do my research again
@@jiris5709 the un 7400 is 2020 edition the only difference between the UN7300 and UN7400 is the tv stand, as far as for gaming the last year model 2019 called UM7300 It had a better response time and very low input lag compared to UN7300.
@@jiris5709 if you can expand your budget a little bit you can go for TCL S535, it's a great choice it's QLED Tv so games in HDR Will look amazing, also are you planning to buy the TV for thr new generation consoles?
This comparison is strange. For starters he says IPS panels should give better colors then VA panels. What ? This is a lie. VA panels should be close to oled panels regarding colors, an IPS panel can not best that. The only thing an IPS better is better than a VA is viewing angles. Also, he is prasing this IPS panel for giving better blacks....there is something strange there. VA should easily beat that. But it maybe also a side effect of the inferior IPS detail. It is darker, yes, but just compare them, the IPS is missing a lot of details and many parts are not even visible because the panel did not display it and just colored it black. He demonstrated this with the MacBook image also. With proper calibration this va panel should easily beat the IPS in colors and regarding blacks it is also better because it display a lot more details.

I know IPS has better gamut ratio overall from the factory and I prefer more accurate color reproduction over some better blacks but I though VA's at least have better variety of darker colors :-/

And the demo is in a bright room. So black level is a non issue. Can't say the same in a dark room.
Agreed. I think the IPS is just clipping blacks hence the grey area that shows up on the Mac and VA panel not showing up on the IPS.

agreed, steve is a dumb and when he test a menu and mount a camera at the front of the tv's, the black color at va panel was a way better then at ips.

The source you play can also determine the black levels. Search and play 4K TH-cam and see if it still looks bad.

I like the LG features, I’ve been using the Sony since the video and the picture is amazing but the Google TV has room for improvements

You have the screens slanted which will favor the IPS screen as they have a better viewing angle, VU is better when seen head on.
I’m going to go with the one that looks great at all angles. But these are just demos i buy for videos.

What is setting for UN7300 ? its hard to bellieve UN7000 is darker even with IPS panel i think UN7300 need display settings.
I put both of them on the same settings
@@TechSteve check 5:29 a possible reason why the ips looks darker is because there is uneven lighting. on that frame the bezel of the va panel on the left is white(reflective) from the left all the way to the lg logo in the center. on the smaller ips panel the bezel is black(non-reflective) across the whole of the panel. maybe you can switch the panels around with the smaller ips taking the left spot and see if that changes the outcome? (the va panels is a bit bigger but the text is significantly clearer).

You have to research for the panel type and i have a USA model so some features can vary.
@@TechSteve The tv has limited picture modes when I have my Apple TV in HDR 4K if I set it in SDR 4K all the other picture modes come up.

These videos need games like The Last Of Us, Uncharted 4, Gears 5, God Of War etc. To get a good HDR comparison or even without. Those would be the seller for me. I personally always prefer an IPS panel as they are the best on PC's which I work on 24/7. VA PC panels are very meh.

50" is the largest I can go, due to space restrictions... I wanted the 50" UN73 model but IPS looks much better than VA. And I can't get the 50" with IPS, right? I'm not sure but I think UN74 50" is IPS panel, if anyone can confirm this? 🤔
I don’t think LG makes a 50” IPS TV, you can get a 49” nanocell
@@TechSteve do you think there's really much of a difference between IPS and VA for casual gamers and just someone who's gonna watch Netflix? It'll be in a room that doesn't get much sunlight so kind of dark, but not as dark as a cinema room for example.
And can you record live TV onto a USB with the UN73? Like set something to record while I'm at work or whatever.
And does the UN73 have Miracast?

@@TechSteve Hi, I did not understand? I just asked if the type of panel in your video is not reversed. Because the first TV, bigger model, has less reflection. And black is more whitish. And the second, smaller model, has more reflection and the black is very dark. Wouldn't the larger model be IPS and the smaller VA?

@@jiris5709 the un 7400 is 2020 edition the only difference between the UN7300 and UN7400 is the tv stand, as far as for gaming the last year model 2019 called UM7300 It had a better response time and very low input lag compared to UN7300.

This comparison is strange. For starters he says IPS panels should give better colors then VA panels. What ? This is a lie. VA panels should be close to oled panels regarding colors, an IPS panel can not best that. The only thing an IPS better is better than a VA is viewing angles. Also, he is prasing this IPS panel for giving better blacks....there is something strange there. VA should easily beat that. But it maybe also a side effect of the inferior IPS detail. It is darker, yes, but just compare them, the IPS is missing a lot of details and many parts are not even visible because the panel did not display it and just colored it black. He demonstrated this with the MacBook image also. With proper calibration this va panel should easily beat the IPS in colors and regarding blacks it is also better because it display a lot more details.
Other than blacks ips better in all ways.

This was based off of USA models so you will have to check the lg website over there. They normally label IPs as you toggle thru the sizes
@@TechSteve I checked the LG TV's on the european LG Website now and the Chart is also valid for the european versions. I'm close to buying a 55 inch TV but i don't know if i should risk to buy a TV with an IPS Panel.

What? IPS has better blacks than VA? Ok now I'm confused, isn't a VA panel supposed to have better black levels? I know IPS has better gamut ratio overall from the factory and I prefer more accurate color reproduction over some better blacks but I though VA's at least have better variety of darker colors :-/
