In this video tutorial, I show step-by-step how to work an afterthought heel using waste yarn on a sock knit using magic loop. The techniques shown in this video can be applied to a sock knit toe up. The free PDF pattern provided below gives the recipe so that you can customize this heel to the number of stitches your socks have.
The full toe-up sock tutorial video will be available Friday 4/29 at 3PM EST.

I'm making a hat, not socks but I really enjoy knitting and knitting videos. I find it so relaxing and really good for bad mental health days and unfortunately I know way to much about bad mental health. I'm 22 and my mum taught me how to knit, I'm not the best but I'm really trying to improve.

Perfect timing! I am knitting a toe up sock and opened TH-cam to find a tutorial for exactly this heel. 😍

If you run some dental floss through the row before and after the waste yarn, it holds the stitches when you pull out the waste stitches when it’s time. It gave me so much confidence the first time. I forget where I saw that.

I am so happy I chose your video to explain the afterthought heel. I have recently started a toe up sock for the first time on Magic Loop. Watching you go through the row set ups gave me so much confidence with this technique, I am actually doing it correctly. I am currently following a KAL and am knitting up to the the heel but was curious of how it will work. Thank you so much for your clear instruction. I am so looking forward to making my own socks and maybe a pair for my husband.

I've only made heels using German Short-Row and am always frustrated with the holes along the decreases, but I'm going to be brave and try an afterthought heel. This seems to bypass the 'hole-y' issue altogether. Just looks so much tidier. Thank you for including the written pattern for us visual learners and for your clear and concise instructions.

Thank you so much this is such a confidence booster. I'm knitting my first pair of socks and you have definitely simplified the afterthought heel for sure. There's no doubt a won't have a complete pair of socks now!! 🥰💖

Thank you very much for this tutorial! I would've liked it to go slower at times, and to see things done more than once, like with picking up that last stitch on the startup round before you pull out the waste yarn on the heel, but all-in-all it was really helpful. It would be very satisfying to see the sock on your foot at the end, to see how a heel like that fits. It would add a lot for me.

Great tutorial! I do heel decreases a little differently so that the band running through the heel is more narrow. I simply start the slip slip knit sequence at the edge and when I get to the other side, I knit 2 tog at that edge. [no stitches are omited....they are just knit in the usual way, instead of at the edge.]

Thank you SOO much! I just did my a toe up with my first afterthought heel and the first kitchener stitch ever using your video! Excellent video and instructions. I usually do fleegle heel, but I wanted the entire heel to be a different color rather than just the decrease portion of the fleegle heel a different color and this worked out great for my foot!

I always wonder why people do the heel after finish the sock.
Knit the heel during knitting the whole sock is more easy to do.
Is there a reason why you do it this way?
    Just curious.
