Watched your sock series... You explained and demonstrated everything so very clearly and your finishing off was perfect... My old Turkish aunties used to sit cross legged on the floor gossiping and making socks... I couldn't get the hang of the heel at all... thank you for clarifying it.
OMG thanks soooo much. I have watched a few afterthought heel videos but I did not like how they did it or something. Yours is just what I want to try. Thanks for explaining toe up orientation as well. That's what I do.
Great sock tutorial! I will be using these videos to knit my first pair of socks. And, that was the best explanation of the kichener’s stitch I have ever seen. Thank you so much! ❤️
FANTASTIC JOB NATALIE!!! I’m actually doing my first afterthought heel right now and your timing couldn’t be more perfect for me! 😁 Everything was very clearly explained and the camera was focused well. I’m so glad I watched this. I don’t remember seeing an explanation (on other videos) about toe-up vs cuff-down positions and direction of the needles for each type...seems like it’d be something super important to know. Well done!
Thanks for the entire tutorial on this type of sock. As I mentioned in my comment on the last part, you are a very good teacher. I can’t wait to try this now. 😁🧶🧦
Clear instructions and tips on top down socks. I will try afterthought heel next, only pick up a stitch or two on each end to make the closeting cleaner as with the regular gusset. Beautiful yarn.
Loved your tutorial. I learned so much. The only suggestion I have is try to get used to adding a stitch to prevent holes in your heel. When I saw how much time it took you to try to work out the holes I appreciated very much that I learned to add a stitch so I didn't have to do that. Thank you so much for your clear explanation of the kitchener stitch.
I made a small practice sock in white worsted weight yarn (toe up). Your directions were spot on and I'm ready to tackle my actual socks. Thanks for a great tutorial.
Hi Natalie, I just wanted to thank you for this wonderful sock series. I have made 1 pair of socks prior to finding this series and it was much more difficult. I wish i had your help then! Your teaching style is really awesome and i think i will be giving socks your way a try once I pick up a few needed items. You are the best! 💜✌️🧶🧦
Wow!! I have to make my heels now but I know it will be so easy after this tutorial! I appreciate your Kitchener tutorial too! Your tricks make it easy to remember the steps and I have a feeling mine is going to look so much nicer now that I watched you do it. I so appreciate your weaving/hole repair tips too, as that is my least favorite part and the most difficult for me.
What a great tutorial, thank you so much for your clear instructions, particularly for the Kitchener stitch. I’ve tried to learn how to do it over the years and always to refer to written instructions or TH-cam. This time, I feel confident I’ll get it because of your tip - start with a Knit on the knit side and Purl on the purl side. I normally knit TAAT toe up but haven’t tried the afterthought heel to avoid the Kitchener stitch! Thanks again.
Absolutely loved your whole toe up sock tutorial. The videos are really clear and your talking pace is slow and steady. You have a great voice. Thanks for the tutorials. I'm becoming a Subscribet.
Thank you, I just so loved your video and so easy. It seems I used two lines of waste yarn for side of stitch pick up. Then went one and no go using this method with DPN's. I will give the circular a try and also have the two lines not four on my second sock to practice a toe up.
Thank you so much for the tutorials on making Cuff Down socks! I have been wanting to learn how to make socks and your tutorials are very easy to follow!
Thank you so much! Finally I founded you who is doing like my mother did the heel. But I forgoten it how shi did. Your exploanation is apsolutaly clear and simple. Specialy is important your insist on orientation of the sock. 🥰
Thanks for a really nice video on toe-up socks. I would love to try this. I have been trying to master cuff down 2 at a time on 2 circulars and I am just about there. I want to make another pair or two before venturing on to toe up. I don't want to lose my mojo on it. (It's happened before!) I will probable do 2 at a time toe ups as well. It's a great way to make socks. No counting rows!
Now I get it! Front needle -knit off purl on, back needle -purl off knit on, repeat! W by did it seem so complicated before! (Unless I have it wrong lol!)
Hi Natalie! I just finished my first pair of socks with your toe-up sock tutorials and the afterthought heel! Thank you SO much for posting these! I was wondering -- do you have any sock heel tutorials where you turn the heel as part of the sock itself rather than as an "afterthought"? Thanks!!
Thank you, Natalie! I have knit heel flap socks before and they always confound me and I can't seem to get a good fitting sock. This tutorial was the best. Since I have a thin ankle I use a Size 0 needle and I realize I need to do fewer stitches because I made shorty socks, but other than that, this tutorial was great. Do you plan on writing up a pattern? If not, I will just make notes. Thank you again! You're an amazing teacher!
OH this tutorial is absolutly amazing! I need to ask tho, I didn’t get the decreases for toe up. How many stitches will I have to decreases? If It’s cuff down then down to 20 (10+10). But you mention it’s Different for toe up.
Great tutorial! But I have a question! Is there any specific reason why 2 rows of waste yarn were made and not 1 row? is it for ease of picking those stitches back up?
One question, when you finish the decreases for the heel, do you still do 1 round of knit before the kitchener stitch? I just want to clarify. Because for the toe, you specified to still do 1 sound of knit after the last decrease round. Thanks!
Jenn Crafts that’s a really excellent question! Since I started the heel with a knit round, I ended the heel with a decrease round. However, I think I’m going to contradict my past video self and say it might be better to start the heel with a decrease round (rather than the one plain knit round) and end with a plain knit round. This might help with gaps in the corners and make kitchener easier. However you choose do it, just make sure it’s the same on both socks and you’ll be good!
I notice that you use 2 rows of waste yarn…I’ve only seen 1 row used before. What’s the reason you use 2? Does it make them line up better? Thanks Natalie!
Hi Natalie. I’m working on my toe up, after thought heel socks. I’m wondering how many grams of yarn I should save for the heels. I would like to make my socks as tall as possible.
Yay! I would save 6 grams per heel. I believe it takes me 3-4 grams per heel for a 60 st sock, so with 6 grams you'll have a little extra just in case!
Am I seeing things wrong? When she is picking up stitches on the frost needle, the first two do look like she is picking up the right side of the stitches, but then it looks like she is picking up the LEFT side as she moves the first needle to the end of the sock. Am I crazy? (Well, sort of), I have watched this section of the afterthought heel several times and looks strange to me.
Thank you for the excellent tutorial. Can you clarify how to measure the length I need to knit for my foot before I start the toe? You mentioned 2 inches less. If my foot measures 9 inches, am I knitting 7 inches from where I place my waste yarn for the heel? Doesn't the heel add length to the foot? I have seen others mention to knit 4 inches less than total foot length. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have never done this type of heel. You are a good instructor and easy to understand.
Yes, you are correct! I apologize for not making that clearer. The 2" less would include the heel AND foot knitting. So that would make the actual foot knitting portion about 3.5-4" less than your total foot length. The best way to know for sure is to knit a sock cuff down and halfway through the foot, knit in the heel. Then you are able to try the sock on with the heel attached. You would only need to do this for your first sock, because for the second sock you would be able to count rounds for the foot. I hope that helps!
It's the best Kitchener stitch tutorial I have found. Finally I've got the idea. Thanks! Greatings from Poland.
OMG, this is the BEST explanation I've seen for the kitchner stitch. Makes so much more sense!! Thank you!
Watched your sock series... You explained and demonstrated everything so very clearly and your finishing off was perfect... My old Turkish aunties used to sit cross legged on the floor gossiping and making socks... I couldn't get the hang of the heel at all... thank you for clarifying it.
GR8 sock tutorial series-I have fallen down the rabbit hole of learning how 2 knit socks-thank you

Hi, question. Can you use a FLK heel with afterthought heel??
Which yarn is this? Love it. Thanks for a great video!
Sandra Patenaude thanks! It’s Leading Men Fiber Arts in “Yarn Hoarder” on their 75/25 base. I think it’s a color that they dye regularly!

Should be the RIGHT side the whole time!
