- La Palatine: Elisabeth Charlotte, Princess of the Palatinate, called Liselotte of the Palatinate (born May 27, 1652 in Heidelberg, died December 8, 1722 in Saint-Cloud near Paris), was the Duchess of Orléans and sister-in-law of King Louis XIV of France.
In 1671 she married Duc Philippe D’Orléans, the only brother of the "Sun King”. After the death of Louis XIV in 1715, her son Philippe II D’Orléans became regent of France until 1723.
Although she only had two surviving children, she became not only the ancestral mother of the House of Orléans, but also the ancestral mother of numerous European royal families. Through her daughter, Elisabeth Charlotte D’Orléans, she was the grandmother of, among others, The French Queen Marie Antoinette.
La Palatine is most famous for the correspondence between her and her aunt Sophia, which provide an extremely detailed report of the daily life at the court of Versailles. The approximately 60.000 letters of La Palatine were published as early as the eighteenth century, and still contain a wealth of information for historians today.

What are your thoughts about Elizabeth ? Do you think her life was sad ? Let me know in the comments below
I think she did the best she could with the cards life had dealt her. What happened to her daughter?
She made the best of her circumstances. I do feel bad for her 😔
She definitely deserved better
Can you do a video about the princess the lamballe?
A video about her is in de line up and will be published on October 9 ! 😄
Have you seen 'Versailles'? I love how she is potrayed in seasons 2-3 of the show
Yes I have seen Versailles ... and enjoyed it although they did take some serious artistic freedom with history. I do like how Liselotte is indeed portrayed as the generous and kind person I like to believe she was. Thank you so much for watching and commenting !
She was so down to earth and completely gob-smacked by the ridiculous intrigues of the court!
@@TheKingsofFrance That was the first time I was glad about a show not sticking with accuracy. I love the dynamic between those three so much!
I do believe that she is most admired and beloved character in that entire series!!!
Same!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
She was a true Royal and knew her position and responsiblity. Love her character on Versailles
In the series Versailles though there was a form of a friendship depicted between Philippe, De Lorraine and Liselotte. In history, this wasn’t the case unfortunately.
@@TheKingsofFrance what WAS the real case(& please be specific, I have asd)
@@redadmiralofvalyria867 I think she was upset about him sleeping with her husband
@@redadmiralofvalyria867 what I could read It was in Philippe final years that he and his wife grew closer and shared laughs together. She lamented his dead just at the time they were finally getting along.
I find myself empathizing with royal women sent to foreign courts/countries for political marriages. She seems to have made the best of her situation and l find her quite interesting. 👸
She is !!! Especially if you start looking at her letters. I’ll be making a video about them at a later time. There’s much to be said about them !
In Germany, there is a book with the collected letters she wrote. Its very entertaining.
I can only imagine how homesick she probably was and how horrific it must have been for her when her family was destroyed by her “ new family” She sounds brilliant, she would have been a great friend to have IF she ever trusted any of her new countrymen or women. It must have been very boring for her in a court where everyone seems to have had a specific role to play and individualism was frowned upon.It would be wonderful to read anything that she wrote about.🖐 🌈 🇨🇦
You can get her book online, if you're really interested.
I've added a link for you: www.amazon.com/Liselotte-Elisabeth-Charlotte-Princess-Palatine/dp/B06VTXWC59
I read a book about her. She was a very fascinating princess indeed. From what I've read, unlike most people of her time, she was very open minded. She was also very critical of religious fanaticism.
She was indeed. Have you read her letters ?
@@TheKingsofFrance Yes. Years ago. Her views on religion was the most distinctive things about them.
May I know which book? Is it in English?
I think she had some sadness in her life at times, like everyone does. I'm sure it wasn't easy having him for a husband. But it looks like he treated her well most of the time. I've had the first and only comment for days now. Hasn't anyone else watched this?
Hi Missy, nope ... but I'm kinda new to youtube and somehow all comments ended up in an 'need to be approved' box. I only found out just now I had a LOT of outstanding comments which I need to react to. So sorry about that !
I agree. Keeping in mind that royal marriages were about land, titles, money, and alliances, it really wasn't at all necessary to "love" each other, they simply had to fulfill their respective duty-roles to have a successful and lasting marriage. "Love" was for fun with the side-candy ;-)
@@christinecameron1612
There were a couple of rare instances, where politics & love ended up coinciding- Liselotte’s grandmother was Elizabeth Stuart, sister of Charles I- their father, James wanted an alliance with a Protestant power, & settled on Frederick, Elector of the Palatinate- despite plenty of people thinking he wasn’t of high enough rank for her, including her mother - nevertheless, he was invited to England & spent time with her & her elder brother (the sibling she was closest to)- Henry’s approval meant a great deal to her, & when he unexpectedly died- her international marriage status increased, so there was even more opposition to her match- however, James was still in favour of it, & his friendship with the late Henry increased Elizabeth’s acceptance to such a point she wouldn’t hear about anyone else- they had several children before his somewhat premature death.
No, Monsier didn't treat her well. I read (her) collection of letters-diary entrys she made from when she arrived at Versailles til Louis XIV death thru her sons regency. Madame wrote and wrote and wrote to her very close aunt in Hanover (who was the heir presumptive to Englands throne-her son was George I). Its A REALLY GOOD READ. She's very-very funny.
Thank you so much for this video. I didn't know much about her and wondered what her life was like. You do a fantastic job with your history videos. Thank you from Texas.
What a lovely compliment, thank you ! How's the weather in Texas these days ??
This is a most excellent series! Your narriation with a lovely French accent and the beautiful music of JS Bach makes all the more delightful! So historically and ascetically pleasure one could near eat it yum yum!!!
Thank you for that lovely compliment. It made my day !
Your video is so good, I cant wait for the video about Charlotte's letters
I just found your channel and I love it!

Completely addicted to your channel! I've watched 5 videos in a row! Thank you so much for making these! 💗
Wow, that's a lot of French history in one sitting. Thank you for watching, glad you enjoy my videos.
Yes! She was awesome. It sucks she had to endure so much hardship. The Court at Versailles was crazy.
The more I learn about French history, the more I see how accurate Dumas was with his works.
I am excited for the French production of the Three Musketeers. They started filming this past September. I really hope they do the story justice.
They should dramatize the whole series. There is so much great history in the d'Artagnan Romances. I cried like a baby at spots in the Man in the Iron Mask. What an emotional book! ❤️
Oh I didn't know there was going to be a new (French) production of The Three Musketeers. Very interesting !
Yes! A two part miniseries, subtitled d'Artagnan/Milady.
@@ericbolton9512 Oh how I would LOVE to see that series! Milady de Winter is one of the most interesting women in the Dumas oeuvre. I know that she is a villain(ess) in Dumas -- but *I* think she had a raw deal from the get-go. It would be fascinating to tell her story from *her* point-of-view....
I don't know if I could possibly explain how much I LOVE your videos! I learn something new and fascinating every single time!!
GREAT WORK! I always look forward to the next one 🙂
Wow, what a wonderful compliment ! I am honoured ! I have much lined up and much planned so be sure to stick around !
Thank you for sharing this historical information with us. I grew fond of Liselotte in the Versailles Netflix series !
You're welcome, thank YOU for watching !
👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Thanks for your series. I love the different picture from her lifetime.
Thanks for watching.
This Princess was a fascinating person not only in the literary sense but a Lady far advanced in her era then most women. Loved her correspondence, written wealth into the life at the court of Louis XIV.
Agreed. Thank you !
Hello, dear people,
about a week ago I happened to watch the movie series “Versailes” from france. It came back on German television, on the channel “ARTE”, and I found it very exciting...
Especially as it wasn't a fairy tale but a factual story. I also liked the way the Sonnenhof was filmed, I can't judge whether the plots and the people portrayed were all like that, but I suspect that the director made a great effort.
-----My personal “Favorites” are the beautiful Madame La Vallerie and the German Liselotte Palatine.--300-350 YEARS ago, that's a long time ago.
Yes, it's very exciting, everything there at the Sonnenhof,
-----The king probably also had money worries, allegedly because of several wars, or so it is said.----
It was the time after the 30 Years' Europe War and before the French Revolution.
Amazingly, Palatine was probably also the grandmother of the famous Marie Antoniette.
It's good to do some research before watching this (film) series Versailes so that you can understand it better.I want to watch it again, the filming must have been very expensive, they say.
It's somehow sad to read her letters. But it's interesting to compare them with the letters by Madame de Sevigné and the correspondance of other German rulers or for example Sophie of Brunswick. Her style in writing a mix of French and German is typical for her period although his simple words for details is remarkable. Thanks for your series. I love the different picture from her lifetime.
Thank YOU for watching !!
I think so, her husband did not give her enought money ( he spent it on lovers), and she was not alowed to leave France (so she could not go visit her daughter or relatives)
You are absolutely right ! Thank you for watching and commenting !
Love these. In the beginning of the videos I'm always going to just skip through but something always just keeps me. I love history so much and it's hard to hold my attention but these videos do it for me after getting through the beginning
I'm glad to hear it. I try to keep the 'sidetalk' to a minimum as it's not why people come, they want to get straight to the point. Thank you for watching !
I am fascinated with all these stories and I love listening to your lovely accent! Thank you for putting out all these videos!
Thank YOU for watching !
Thanks for the video on Elizabeth. She's one of my favorites of the French Royals.
Definitely, ! Thank you for commenting !
Thank you for this video! I hope to purchase a compilation of her letters someday :)
Thank you for watching and commenting. Some of the letters are quite interesting. In one of them she writes a lovely anecdote about Philippe and his 'extraordinary' use of a small statue of Christ... Quite the read, I assure you ! She certainly didn't censor herself !
Only just discovered your videos and enjoying them very much. I like the character of Liselotte very much. Love seeing the collection of portraits. I have one little correction. You showed a portrait of Philippe's 1st wife Henriette Anne which was in fact Van Dyck's portrait of Henrietta Maria, her mother.
Oh my sincerest apologies. Sometimes mistakes do trickle in although I do my utmost !!! Hope you enjoyed being here nonetheless…
@@TheKingsofFrance I can't complain! You showed loads of gorgeous paintings. I have a passion for portraits both because of the history and because of historical fashion. Your hard work is much appreciated.
My sisters nicknamed me "Snailmail," because l still enjoy corresponding with letters. 🤗
Haha that is so cute !
These videos are excellent! I gobble up two every morning to start the day! always felt a kind of admiration mixed with loathing for Louis XIV and I think the fact that England and Holland became so firmly parliamentarian during this period of history - and especially in the case of Great Britain - was because both countries had decades to watch just how uncaring an autocratic, narcissistic, absolute monarch could be with regards to his people. As a man, he had good qualities but as a ruler he was a tyrant. It also seems that the worse a king was back then, the more greedy and grasping the mistresses were. It seems like attracts like.
Thank you so much for your kind words, and for sharing your thoughts on Louis XIV. I am very appreciative !
Liselotte hated not only her daughter-in-law Françoise-Marie but her kids (her own grandchildren) as well just because their mother was born out of wedlock
For anyone interested La Palatines letter are published in book form on Amazon (I am) in English and French!
Thank you for sharing that info !
thanks, i like to read some letters of Palatine, too, till now i only read some small parts, found in internet ..
Congratulations on 1000 subscribers!

Yay !!! Thank you so much ! I messed up and only just now am seeing about 50 comments that went into a 'need to be approved' box. I surely am a new youtuber still, and still need lots of practice ! Thank you for being my number 1.000 !!!!
Thank you, enjoyed the video. Poor Lady, Did Phillip at least treat her kindly? How sad for both really.
.
I honestly think Philippe turned like the wind. He was a very fickle and unpleasant person at times, and a kind and loving one at other times .... Thank you for watching and commenting !
@@TheKingsofFrance like the rest of us , fickle one minute..kind and loving the next. He was very much a human..keep the videos coming!
I will ! Thank you for supporting my channel !
From a biography I read on Phillipe, it appears he cared for her for the first decade, rotten to her in the second, and they seem to have become companiable in the last decade of their marriage. Both are fascinating characters. Enjoying this series very much!
Great grand mama Lieselotte was a peach. Did you read her letters? She's funny af and gives an insight to the court of Louis. I'm waiting for that video, bc you have to make it funny and tragic.
No I haven't, although I've read books in which her letters were discussed... She does seem to have had a great sense of humour throughout it all. I'm not sure I'm good at making a video 'funny' but I certainly will try !
@@TheKingsofFrance You should make a video on her letters... sounds like a great idea
She left a gold-mine of information regarding life at Versailles. She must have been a most interesting character.
She was. She is by far my favorite royal of the time.
@@TheKingsofFrance I just feel she would have been one of the more approachable people in that society. And that is always a huge plus in my eyes.
Fantastic video! She was a very interesting woman
Definitely. Thank you for watching Sarah !
I think she played the court game pretty well. I would assume she wouldn't have thought her marriage to be one for live but politics. She seems pretty brave and accepting of her situation. I wouldn't think after being friends with the king he would have been so displeased by her letters he would have banished her. I see her as smart and savvy. She outlasted them to come into prominence. Another great video. Many thanks.
She didn't get along with the King's new wife, Madame de Maintenon, at all. De Maintenon had a big hand in the deteriorating relationship between the King and La Palatine... Thank you for watching and commenting !
She tolerated so much BS when she got married. It feels good to know that things got better for her when she got older.
Indeed. Thank you so much for watching !
Dont forget Her Patience...
Another excellent video! : informative, engaging and feels fair to all you discuss! I feel La Palatine is often represented unfairly In history as she is more like “the rest of us” . I eagerly await your next video!
I’m glad you enjoyed it !
Both of Philippe’s wives were related; Henriette Anne/ Minette was the daughter of Charles I of England- his sister, Elizabeth married Frederick- who was Elector of the Palatinate; they had a lot of children before his somewhat premature death - Elisabeth’s aunt Sophie was mother of the future George I of Great Britain...
Thank you for sharing that information with us, and thank you for watching !

No worries! 😉
I was just thinking about that. Always interesting to see how royal family trees mix and mingle. She was the great granddaughter of James the first of England, and her great Granddaughter was the Queen of France and her first cousin was George the First of England.
Did any of the letters between the Chevalier de Lorraine and the Duc de Orléans survive?
Not that I am aware of. La Palatine burned all the correspondence between Philippe and his lovers to avoid scandal at his time of death.
Hi, Awesome live history video I enjoyed it. How is your vacation in Italy? How is your cat Rani? I'm doing well. My cat Benjamin says hi to you and cute Rani your cat he sends his purrs. We have alot of warm weather in Canada. How is the weather in Italy? Have a great day see you next video greetings from Canada 😊
Hi Michelle, I only saw your message now. Italy was great, we visited Pisa, and Florence and Venice, so much history and culture there, it was amazing !
As melancholic as this sounds because she was treated as an outcast. Her suffering pails in comparison to the millions of French citizens who suffered and died while their king fought wars to glorify himself and not the state. We can talk about the reign of Louis XIV for hours. But for certain Louis spending and outlandish grandeur left him blind to his people’s misery. Imagine what Paris would have became of Louis XIV spent the money on the city and not Versailles.
He was a tyrant in his later years and very much different from his early reign
Hi Mike, I agree. He wasn't loved at all in his final days either ... Hardly anyone showed up for his funeral procession, mostly they were glad he was gone. A sad ending to the life of a glorious king.
Why would he? He hated Paris.
Born 1652 died 1722: she lived a long life, I would enjoy seeing more shows like Versailles showing her life
She was a very interesting person at court ! Thanks for watching !
@@TheKingsofFrance I'm surprised philippe was able to have children seems he was more bisexual and not only homosexual since he had the ability to be with women also. The chevalier du Lorraine seemed to be very influential. Perhaps you Can watch the Versailles series and discuss what they got right and wrong
My favorite ladies in Louis XIV's court: 1 Marie Anne Mademoiselle de Blois 2 Liselotte 3 the two Henriettas 4 Louise Benedicte (Monseiur Le Prince's daughter) 5 Madame de Mentnon 6 Louise Dianne (daughter of Phillippe II) 7 all the Mazarinettes
Apparently Liselotte hated all lovers at court Mentnon Montespan Chavalier Loraine looks like she hated the court's Libertine ways
She was my role model as a teen! I loved her letters
thank you for watching !
Liselotte became an enemy of Louis Auguste Montespan's boy she actually said once that she was sure that Louis Alexander was a son of the king but Louis Auguste was not fathered by Louis
I think her life was sad due to unhappy marriage with a bisexual. Her friendship with Louis XIV was spoiled by his mistress. Son got married against her wishes. Thanks for this video.
Yes, I totally agree.
Thank you for watching !
She is the paternal granddaughter of Prince Rupert son of Elisabeth Steward sister to Charles I of England
I’m surprised so much of her account survived.
Hers, and this of the Duc De Saint Simon, who is (by far) my favorite court chronicler.
As far as I know from your videos she actually turned her back to the king once
Yes correct. She did not want her son to be married off to one of the ‘bastard’ children of the king. She was so upset she turned her back on him. A bold move for sure !
@@TheKingsofFrance again from your videos I know that Louis wanted to marry off Phillippe II to Françoise Marie and they did get married but Philippe was notoriously unfaithful and had 3 bastard kids Louis Charles Marie Angelique and Jean Phillippe François actually what kind of connection did La Palatine have whit her son's bastards if I could have guessed she hated them

I Read her bio. She had a bad deal. Phillipe d'Orléans used to walk around with a group of gay guys who followed him everywhere called "les mignons." Which means the cute ones.
When they were just newlyweds, she caught him in bed with another man she said " I guess I'll have to learn to live with this". And didn't complain about his lifestyle.
They say that the first time she saw him she was shocked. He was so effeminate. Covered with bows, flounces, lace and pompoms.
But she was a tomboy, the opposite of him. She loved hunting, dirty jokes; all type of male oriented sports; and got along very well with her brother in law King Louis 14th.
People at court used to joke. That she is very much the man, while he is very much the woman...
Thank you for watching.
Her aunt Sophia was the mother of King George I of Great Britain.
Thank you for sharing that information with us !
I like the way you pronounce Lizabote

Poor Lisotte. She had it very bad. Her marriages without love and the abandonments in general. She was clever though and she stayed.
She was a very smart and open minded woman for the time... I highly recommend her book to you !
Merci beaucoup !
She wrote 60K letters? That's technology - I don't think most of us have written 10 letters in our lifetime with telephones/cells, texting/messaging! I don't believe people know how to write except in script/typewriter. When I went to school we had to take calligraphy classes for 2 yrs, but this was in Europe. Handwriting was considered an art form. She was educated as to the importance of her position and further on, at the Versailles Court. Loved the show on Netflix!
Yes, someone on here commented I must have made a mistake about the 60.000 letters So I went to check again? But nope. It actually were 60.000 letters, which is INSANE ! Thanks for watching Marina !
