- Anne of Austria (in Spanish Ana María Mauricia de Austria y Austria-Estiria), Infanta of Spain, Infanta of Portugal, Archduchess of Austria, Princess of Burgundy and Princess of the Netherlands, born 22 September 1601 in Valladolid in Spain and died January 20, 1666 in Paris of breast cancer, was queen of France and Navarre from 1615 to 1643 as the wife of Louis XIII, then regent of these two kingdoms during the minority of his son Louis XIV (from 1643 to 1651). Daughter of King Philip III (1578-1621), King of Spain (1598-1621), and Archduchess Margaret of Austria-Styria (1584-1611), Anne of Austria is the mother of Louis XIV, the "Sun King", and Philippe, Duke of Orleans.

Fun fact about Louis XIV: King Philip IV of Spain was his uncle through both his mother and father. His mother was the sister of King Philip IV and his father’s sister was the first wife of Philip IV.

The high intermarriage rate of Spanish/Austrian/French royals probably increased genetic anomalies leading to high infant mortality rate in royal children. It probably explains why most of the children Louis XIV had with Maria Teresa of Spain died in infancy or were stillborn. Same happened to other royal families.
@@TheKingsofFrance Wasn't Maria Teresa's brother called "El Hechizado" meaning the cursed one due to his many Hapsburg inbreeding physical & cognitive ailments? Louis XIV was lucky to have one healthy boy survive into adulthood from Maria Teresa given her extreme Hapsburg inbreeding. Her lack of known intelligence or interest in anything challenging is probably evidence that she had some form of cognitive learning disability.
If I'm not mistaken Charles II Of Spain was her half brother... but yes, you are right. The deformities in Charles were extreme and he died without issue, after which Louis XIV's grandson became Philippe V, King Of Spain.
If I'm not mistaken the first wife of Philippe IV (mother of Maria Teresa) was a Bourbon whereas his second wife (mother of Charles II) was Habsburg just as Philippe. I assume the Bourbon genes did provide Maria Terese with an advantage but the fact remains that inbreeding was common in royal families. As you know even nowadays it isn't unheard of, as Elizabeth II of England married her cousin as well...

I know many people who went on to have a child after the age of 40, but, we can with certainty say that back then, giving birth was a more risky business than it is nowadays.
Although essentially a Spanish princess or infanta, Anne was "of Austria" because as a Habsburg, she was an Austrian archduchess.

Louis XIV made the mistake of not continuing the pattern of finding competent & able Prime Ministers as had been done via Cardinal Richelieu & Mazarin. Had he done so subsequent kings would have also continued the practice & it could have avoided many of the disastrous policies followed by later kings. Louis XIV sowed the seeds that destroyed his dynasty.
It was a deliberate choice from his end though. Louis did not want the interference of a council or advisors. Right after the death of Mazarin Louis walked into the council, dismissed his mother, and informed his ministers that from now on not a single decision would be made without his concent...
@@TheKingsofFrance Agree that it was a deliberate choice by Louis XIV. He became a control freak because of the Fronde & all the intriguing by the nobles. Instead of trying to use noble factions against each other he crushed them. By neutralizing them in Versailles & making the nobles useless. Unfortunately this separated the nobles from the peasants & larger society. It cut off the noblese oblige social contract that had been the norm for centuries. Why would nobles care about the well being of their people or estates if their only avenue to power & status was in Versailles? Louis XIV created a gilded cage for France's nobles. Unfortunately it also caught his own heirs & limited their capacity to govern.

Since Louis XIII was probably gay, questions about the legitimacy of the Sun King persist. Richelieu may have convinced the devout Anne that infidelity in the interests of France was a pious act. While Richelieu's animus against Anne's Hapsburg family is legendary, he was also waging the Wars of Religion to rid France of Huguenots.
Actually scientific evidence proves that Louis XIV was a descendent of Henri IV. obviously though that could mean Louis was the son of Gaston D’Orléans, but for form let’s assume he was indeed Louis XIII’s son.

Yes, there wasn't medical treatments for infertility problems at the time. It's really a wonder how Anne of Austria had those two boys so many years after her marriage.

If Anne was the daughter of a Spanish king...why is she called Anne of Austria?
The rulers of Spain, so her father, belonged to the House of Habsburg, which was the Austrian royal house. Hence she is named Anne of Austria.

I have a question. I know that all Spanish Hapsburg Princesses are entitled to carry the Austrian titles of Archduchess and "Of Austria". But why only Anne of Austria? Louis XIV wife was called Maria Theresa of Spain and not Austria. Philip II two daughters Isabella and Catherine Michaela are both designated "Of Spain" not of "Of Austria". Can anyone explain this?
As far as I can tell, it depends per country / language. Louis XIV's wife is also referred to as Maria Theresa of Austria.

There are rumours about an affaire with Mazarin, but nothing has been historically proven and an affair would be quite unlikely in my opinion.
