- The story of Anne of Brittany, the only woman in history who became Queen of France twice, is about the strong character of a woman who had to deal with politics and personal loss from a very young age. According to Brantôme, “Anne de Bretagne was the most worthy and honourable queen that has ever been since Queen Blanche, mother of the King Saint-Louis, and very sage and virtuous.”

Anne of Brittany is one of the most interesting and inspiring rulers of history. She was successful in maintaining her position as Duchess of Brittany and was an advocate of culture and education. Thank you for this wonderful video about her life.

This was fantastic! I knew some of the people & history around Anne- I've just read a bit about Henry Tudor's time in exile in Brittany with Anne's father- & it linked up so many things & made it all more coherent. I didn't know Anne's story as a whole, & she sounds amazing! Writing a report to the king about her duchy aged 11! She didn't have an easy life though, especially losing so many children.

Hm. I know, back then their society and power structures were very patriarchal, focused on men. So I get it, that's obviously why they were so anxious about having a male heir and so on and so forth, that was the ways back then, yes yes. But the one thing that is kind of a little weird to me is that it took so so long (or never happened) for many to realise that their worries about male heirs could be very easily solved by just fully accepting female rulers and the equal status of women in society... 👀
I mean, once again, i get it, this was probably for a good part due to their religious beliefs and so on, but still. To me it seems so logical, so inevitable, so clear that all beings are equal, it's sometimes a bit hard for me to grasp how these inequalities could be so deeply engraved into their thinking.
Also it is mind-boggling in some way to think that Anne became duchess at the age of 11, and seemed to have done a relatively good job at it despite being so young. Again, it is clear to me that times back then were very different and that adulthood in many ways often started much earlier than it does for many (but by far not all) of today's children, but it still sometimes does surprise me _how_ different certain things really were. Being thrown into all those political, hostile, marital, difficult, weird, troublesome things at such a young age, I can only try to imagine how that must've felt. The same is obviously true for children who were born into non-noble families, they'd have to work for example on the field or even in the mines at those ages and younger. Difficult, very difficult.
In the same breath, it is astonishingly painful to hear that it needed the death of 4 infants for Charles to finally decide to be true to her and stop with his affairs... Times were different back then, very obviously.
Though nevertheless it is beautiful to hear that Anne was actually able to enjoy affection and even love for her husbands at least as much as possible under all those circumstances.
Indeed, i must say even though she had to endure many hardships and difficulties of which especially the death of so many of her children must have been unbearably painful for her, her story still strikes me as a reasonably positive one, with both of her marriages being not easy obviously but at least as happy as possible it seems. I like it ^-^
And it is also very remarkable to me that Anne put so much effort into providing education to so many young women in and around her court, I love it. She obviously must have been a rather wise and also very charitable woman, but I also wonder if she did that to cope with her grief for her lost children somewhat. At least I would find it very much understandable, and a very positive way to deal with those tragedies.
Her book of hours is very very beautiful, thank you very much for mentioning it! It is a beautiful piece of art, very special in my opinion. Those detailed and vivid illuminations must have taken ages to complete, one can only imagine how much time and work and effort must have gone into it back then.
By the by, i haven't given up on our Ada either, though her progress was slow unfortunately over that time. But I am recently trying to learn how to draw maps and I am enjoying that a lot, so maybe she will get a map for her travels at some point, we shall see.
That would be very satisfying for me, I love creating worlds in writing as well as in drawing (though as i said I am still very much learning, in regards to both I guess), so being able to combine those two things would be really nice.

Oh, cartography … it sounds fascinating. Creating worlds and mapping them - it takes one’s mind away from reality, I imagine. It’s nice to hear that Ada might have a world and a territory to wander through, so to speak :)

I loved this episode,since I'm descended of Anne of Brittany,Claude and King Francis/Duke of Valois.My elder brother is the spitting image of Francis,also called Francis and my sister looks just let me Anne.Interesting that the hereditary foot being one shorter than the other still runs in our family.My mom and me both have that passed down,although it's usually by half an inch or no more than one inch.Now I know exactly who it was passed down from.
Now I feel so much closer to Anne knowing that she passed down the foot genetics.

I have never looked at this before but I am very interested in Queen Anne Of Brittany . Several years ago I I was able to find a (1856) broach in France with her crown and crest. I replicated one of the crests in sterling silver and adorned it with a 14k honey bee and proclaimed whoever wears this pendant is a real queen bee because you are wearing the crown of a real French queen. Not only will you be wearing the crown of a real French queen but the only queen in all of French history to have married two French Kings.

Louis XII "le père du peuple" . Il aimait tellement son peuple , il a allégé les impôts, a payé l'enterrement du Roi Charles sur ses propres deniers !! J'adore Louis XII qui évitait les dépenses pour soulager son peuple. Il adorait Anne et la respectait, il ne l'a jamais trompée, alors qu'il était "un homme à femmes".

Edit edit: did Charlie die from a brain bleed from impact? I'm curious as to what exactly happened.
The sources I used did not go into specific details about his death - apart from mentioning that Charles died following his head injury. As you say, it must have been some sort of cranial trauma related to the impact on his head.
