    In response to how to make your shawls smaller, you can use smaller weight yarn. I knit my Painting Bricks Shawl with laceweight and absolutely love it. It’s great in the summer, and I don’t feel overwhelmed as I would with a heavier shawl.

    Oh my goodness, Stephen. The Botanic Shawl is a showstopper in that rainbow gradient you show here in the video. I want to knit it with the same yarn because it was love at first sight. What yarn is that gradient?

  • @MissSholia
    @MissSholia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Every time I watch an episode, it makes me wanna cast on something new 😅
    I've been wanting to start an Exploration Station shawl for like a year but I've been hesitant about my yarns choice. I always seek for the perfect planning before I start a project, but when you're saying you just knit and pick another ball of yarn without worrying too much about the fiber or the color, it gives me confidence to go on with my project. Why not? If I don't like the result, I'll rip that part and try again. 🤗
    And yes, I also keep the tiny bits of leftover yarn. You never know when you're gonna wanna use them! I mostly count on them to repair eventual broken stitches.

    I would love to see a penguono workshop.
    I really like the Reverberate pattern and I'm surprised no one seems to mention it. I made one in 4 ply for myself, then adapted it to make a DK version for my mum.

    Thanks for sharing. I was wondering if you think there are any knitting "rules" knitters should stick to, or do you think rules should be broken?

    • @StephenWest
      @StephenWest  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's great to learn lots of rules and techniques, but it's always fun to break them. One rule I usually always use with my sweaters is I like to knit my cuffs and collar and bottom ribbing on a needle one size smaller than the body and sleeves of my sweater. This gives a tighter crisp stitch tension and frames the garment really well. It also doesn't flare or stretch out as much at the edges.

    Thank you for your video! I love the berry colorway and will order. I am going to share you with my sister. She doesn't knit and is afraid of color. I think you're the answer. I also have six sweaters on the needles and will be starting a throw soon. (a good time to work on gifts). At times we put the air conditioning on after long hot days bicycling. Southern Wisconsin can become steamy in the summer. I had to show my husband the sweater you are wearing. Bright colors with patterns are what he likes. I'm thinking I can do this on my own but hope you have a pattern. There are times I don't want to think too much. He is 6'6" and everything I make for him has to be modified or I create the pattern. The book looks awesome. I appreciate the effort. Online has its place but I love books and will go through them over and over Take care. Carol from Southern Wisconsin.

    I love your shell shaped shawls that grow like a nautilus or with eyelets like abalone shells.
    I bought this book and have made a couple of things now. I generally buy books for inspiration more than following a pattern. I'm usually terrible when it comes to following patterns exactly, usually going off on my own tangent somewhere, but your patterns are truly very simple so really are an easy way to use a simple design for colour experiments. The title is apt.
    I'm also one who likes to think the bigger the better when it comes to a shawl. I like to put fringes on shawls too.
    Your sweater construction interests me with your different approach to the shoulders. Definitely something I have in mind for my TBK.

      I love the CaMaRose Midnatssol. Qing FIbre Melted Baby Suri is one of my favorite alpaca yarns. It's a little bit thicker though, more like a sport weight, but it's so good as an accent color stripe to use instead of mohair.

    Stephen, I was thoroughly mesmerized watching you display your "starts" and, I so much wanted to touch everything in the bins!
    Do you have everything you hand knittted displayed in 1 place?
    You'd need a museum!
    I just discovered you when you and another (well-known) knitter whose name I don't recall, went to the sheep round up together.
    You got filthy and exhausted and your lovely hostess fed you National delights and you had an amazingly memorable experience together. (I did too, just watching you, and am so glad not to be in the cold and slush with you both!😂)

    Hi, Stephen! I love Wooly World of West Knits (and all your videos). I’ve been crocheting for awhile-just learning to knit. I finished my first project (a garter stitch scarf). I had to frog it and start over, since I dropped a couple stitches and it looked kinda wonky 😖, but I think it looks good now that it’s done. Your beautiful shawls inspire me! I hope to be a great knitter like you someday. Lots of love.

    I love your sweater designs and your beautiful color palettes. I'm not good at wearing shawls, but they are stunning. I might give the motif shawl a try for a dear friend of mine! The Painting Shawl is stunning, but would love it in purples. Painting Honeycombs makes me happy, I'm looking for a color work sweater with vertical stripes for a slimming look with a lot of personality! Any suggestions? Do you have a design I've missed that is colorful with vertical stripes instead of horizontal ones? If not, maybe that could be an inspiration for a new design. Love Stitch and Brioche. The shot of you knitting with the pups under your arms is just beautiful. You aught to have a still made and hang it on your wall😊. Love your videos! You're so much fun and I learn so6new every episode.

    Hi Stephen, you spoke about your design process, like just allowing a wip take it's own form, how do you write the pattern as you go? Or at the end? And what about test knitting? Do you do that yourself or do you pay people to do that? What are you looking out for in each test knit?

  • @madelynthompson8969

    I've been watching your episodes 1 through 4 this afternoon - really inspiring. Question - why does wool start to get fuzzy looking after working with it for a bit . . . and should I be selecting wool that is blended with another fiber? Working on your Botanic Shawl right now from one of your kits online - and after several false starts, it's starting to look really good. I'm 3/4 of the way there. As the next project, I want to make the Fantastitch shawl or the Painting Rainbows - (trying to get my nerve up) - and want to select a yarn that won't fuzz up on me. Thoughts? And thanks so much. You are a true inspiration for me.

    I recently received my Rain or Shine kit, one of about half a dozen or so kits I’ve ordered in the last month. Even using two strands I find the yarn too fine to really even get started. I get as far as the picking up stitches part of the I-cord cast-on and I just can’t see the stitches with sufficient clarity. Maybe do the project on larger needles? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. PS, love Brioche and Stitch; my ambition now is to go to Amsterdam and visit your shop, and maybe even meet you.

    Such a nice episode again! I was on a crochet kick but you put me in the mood to knit again. Brioche no less. I just cast on the Miss B shawl by Nancy Marchant and am thoroughly enjoying it! I’d would love to hear you tell us more about brioche knitting (though pupdates are welcome too!) : what do you like best about this technique and do you plan on incorporating it in more of your designs? I don't know if you already finished both sweaters (showed at around 14:08 in your video) or that you even have knitted on the darker one of the 2, but if you find the darker one to dark, why don't you use some color-pops like you call them and brighten the whole thing up a bit?

  • @lankakaaos
    @lankakaaos 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have just changed to lighter weight of yarn to get your shlankets bit smaller. This way I can enjoy knitting same pattern as other are knitting without getting too big finished object. I did Marled Magic first with two fingering yarns and to bind off before last parts. I knitted second one with lace and thinner mohair and got just the right size.
    So it is possible to knit all your shawls in smaller size as long as there is some lighter yarn to knit with.
