When you decided to become a shop teacher, did you ever imagine giving weekly lessons to 31k people you've never even met before? As many problems as social media has, now is the best time in the history of the world for learning how to do things.

I tell my students "if you're good at Googling, you don't really need ~me~. Thankfully most kids can't Google their butt with both hands and a flashlight, so my job is pretty secure."

Good job! I would probably glue a bit of rubber mat on top of where the battery is, so in case the battery wants to dance, it won't cause a short.

Watching this after finnegans garage. Unsure how low your air ride will go. He had a mini truck that would lay frame and when the battery died he couldn’t get to it to raise the truck. I don’t think you will have that issue, but your should make a plan on how to jump your car if you have a dead battery that is shorted.
    Keep up the excellent content.

I saw that episode of Finnegan's Garage. I have a terminal right on the firewall I can jumper to. What I do need, is to route a way to fill the air tank when it's on the ground too, in case the compressors quit. Front will sit on the ground, but the back is still up (I wasn't willing to raise the bed floor more than 4" - it still has to be a truck!).

You gotta have a battery somewhere. If there's only one place it fits, it makes sense to put it there. Have you ever used riv-nuts for a fastener in a blind hole? They look to be pretty handy. I've never used them but am thinking of getting the tools for it. Don't really have a need but might some day. Doesn't everyone buy tools they don't need yet but might someday? Looking forward to hearing that beast run!

I absolutely LOVE riv-nuts/nut-serts. I felt, for the weight of the battery and the potential for vibration, real bolts would be better.

Nice! Two things concern me about what you've done here. First, if that driveline ever decides to let go, the location of the battery seems to put it in harms way. Second, if you are ever in an accident with that, or have an electrical fire, the fire department is going to have a heck of a time locating the correct cable to cut. Maybe install a battery disconnect switch (like dozers have) in a prominent place under the hood, or in the cab?

Those thoughts all crossed my mind as well. I tried not to think about them. (grin)

that battery tray built like a winch mount!..she'll hold alright...lol
for the amount of garbage thats gonna get on that battery even on perfect day driving only.... you may want to grab one of those plastic boat battery boxes (for how tight it is in there you may only need the top lol)
will you be modding the wiring for the compressors now that theyre close to the batt?

Very true! Something I am considering.

What if you take your car through some water crossing? Wouldn't that short the frame mounted battery?

    • @GregWellwood

Car batteries are not affected by water; not a risk at all.

I'm looking at mounting a battery box to my caravan chassis. I was considering using rit nuts. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @GregWellwood
      @GregWellwood  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I would use a large size RivNuts, and probably quite a few; you'll be carrying quite a bit of weight. On RivNuts that I have concerns with, I dab some JB Weld or Epoxy around them to further stick them to their mount, and seal from any moisture.

@@GregWellwood It's a lithium battery and it's only 11kg, so not heavy at all. I will consider the JB weld. Thank you.

I’d have put the battery in a plastic box on that rack…😂

The plastic boxes are bigger than you'd think. Not much room under here.
