I think they skate so good not just because of their families' support, but because the older skaters truely accept them. They hang out together, get encouragement and learn from example. They don't get to be looked down at by the adult skaters. And of course, there's that samurai mentality--> go all in, or nothing!

Good video. As someone who has skated since about 1989 and lived in both Japan and the UK, I'd say the main reason (some) Japanese kids get so good is that skating is set up over there in such a pedagogical way because of the strong master/apprentice culture they have. They have all sorts of skate classes for boys and girls, and the kids really follow instructions. Skateparks have small obstacles for people to learn on before they progress to the bigger parts. There are even a couple of skateparks with parallel bars for people to hold on to while they learn to ollie and do flip tricks. In the UK it wasn't really the done thing to ask for advice, and when it was given, it was in a kind of "too cool for school" way. I'd never heard of any kind of skate class in the UK. maybe things are different now.
I’m skating in London right now and we have like way too many “skate parks” but like u said there’s not much for beginners. If your a beginner u learn to just skate then learn like 2-3 tricks before actually being able to use the skate park properly. Also some areas are restricted not on paper but like socially. For example there’s this skatepark at south bank that is really fucking dope but u can’t really go there unless your advanced. If your a beginner then u either find a group or you practice in your garden because a lot of the older people snicker a lot. Also skateboarding tends to be associated with druggies because most of the time it is. Like if you skate near Camden or even walk with outfits that don’t make you look like a tourist to the area then you will defo be approached by a guy on a skateboard asking if u want to buy.
the way the music kicks in at 6:11 and how he says "speedo" had me thinking i was watching some anime about a young skateboarder, trying to go faster and bigger.. loved it.
