    Cabri G2 Start Up Procedure & Hover Power Check
    Show Up Anyway!
    Most everyone looks for ways to save money and make the most of their ground and flight training. One big problem I have observed for the past 20 years is, many students see weather is not the greatest, so they call and cancel!
    That's not the best option. There are always, always, always, things to do to make progress! You should show up for your training session regardless. Your instructor should be pushing this as well.
    The number 1 area that people struggle with is all the ground work. All the stuff that goes along with being a safe and prudent pilot. 25% of the work is learning the aircraft. 75% of the work is everything that you have to know!
    For example, I had a flight scheduled with our HOGS Guest Instructor Christopher Houser in the Cabri G2 yesterday. We were planning on shooting a brand new fresh video for our Radio Communications Course, and or Slope Landings with footage from both inside the cockpit, and exterior filming of the aircraft as well for the HOGS Private Pilot Online Course.
    I knew the weather wasn't great, so did Chris. Did we play the game before our scheduled flight time going back and forth trying to decide to fly or cancel. No, we did not. Chris trained with me for all his ratings 10 years ago. He knows there is always something to do and I would show up.
    By the time I arrived the weather had deteriorated and wasn't good enough for flying the pattern for radio work, or exterior filming due to rain.
    We decided then to do a Start Up Procedure and Hover Power Check Video for the Cabri G2. This is something we could do safely. We would also be able to do a hover power check along with the start up.
    There are is always something to do. For students, maybe the weather is not good enough for the pattern, however it may just be fine to hone some basic skills like Hovering. Pick Ups and Set Downs, Hover Autos. Quick Stops. And most importantly, you can sit one on one with your instructor and do ground. There is always something to do to make progress!

    I’m a 10k plus hr ATP with five turbojet types. I started my rotor private add on with this a/c. I really appreciate this video. If this is an a/c you want to fly, watch this over and over and over again because it will save you $$. Thank you for this video.

    I have watched a number of Cabri start up videos, and this one is the best. Clear and organised procedure with very useful added information.
    Chris is a very competent G2 pilot and instructor.

    Hi Chris. Great video. Can I just say that I was taught to keep the friction on until ready to lift - that way I can keep hold of the cyclic with my right hand whenever the rotors are turning. Because the friction is on, there is no need for me to 'guard' the collective when doing the mag checks which leaves my left hand free to flip switches. My comment is not meant to be critical but it might be a method that some pilots might feel happier following.

Hope both of you are well.philip tried to take all that in but he had trouble taking it in it most take time for it to sink in.i will have to try and learn a bit at a time. Philip is dislecksick so he struggles at taking things in.but I will hope to get there in the end if I ever start lessons. Take care and have a brilliant festive season phil.

    I respect the FAA and EAA powerplant certification time and cost. But a carburated ICE piston engine in 21'st century is a bit vintage. I guess it still uses leaded avgas instead of high octane unleaded gas that sports car use. Fuel injection, superchargers, turbo, were all used in ICE piston engines in WWII. Technology is mature. Yet Enstrom, Robinson, Gabri all use ancient carburated piston engine, not out of place in 1936.

      Bruno never wanted to put the Lycoming in the G2 but for certification and reliability he had no choice. They have a G2 running on a diesel engine. You can use UL91 in the Lycoming, it’s way better for it and saves an oil change.

  • @llwellyn1

    Great review on the G2. I'm curious about the need to immediately engage the rotor after engine start. On a really cold day, wouldn't it be prudent to allow the engine to warm up a bit/ get the oil flowing, before adding the load of the rotor? Just because there is oil pressure doesn't mean the everything is necessarily getting nominal lubrication immediately. I do it for my cars and motorcycles, so why not "warm up" the helicopter engine as well? Thanks Chris & Kenny, for producing this video.

      Always refer to the POH. Thank you for the feedback!

    • @llwellyn1
      @llwellyn1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HelicopterGround That's a safe answer but not particularly insightful, given your mission statement for pilot education. I believe there is a reason, just as the POH preaches, but the dynamics of torque, load, idle power, rpm, oil flow rate, temperature, and the clutch engagement cycle are truant in your response. I'll research the question thoroughly and get back to you soon! BTW, isn't it interesting how the ole Gazelle will start the turbine, bring it to idle , then engage the rotor a few minutes later?

    can u elaborate a little more on hover vs Power check -
    what parameters are u looking for in hover check ? - any thing specific (numbers) on the MLI?
    for power check - looking for any numbers on the MLI - or just making sure you can make a controlled right turn?

    • @HelicopterGround
      @HelicopterGround  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes making sure your using power within limits for the given flight situation.

    Hi guys, thank you for the video, it helps a lot! By the way, I was taught to check the cyclic free movement twice: first with the collective down, and then with the collective up. For me it looks like there is a reason to double check it, what do you think?

    • @christopherhouser6935
      @christopherhouser6935 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry for the late response.... I copied the below straight from the G2 POH
      Ignition system
      The engine has a dual-plug, mixed ignition system comprising :
      • One magneto with constant timing,
      • One solid-state electronic capacitor-discharge system, with
      variable timing.
      The electronic system is direct-fed by the battery through a dedicated
      circuit breaker, located on the cabin breaker panel.
