He's added a technical understanding for us non fighters. He teaches me so much. Now that I understand the science so much more, I'm way more into MMA. All leagues, not just the ufc.
Chael Sonnen is seriously one of the best in the business. I mean let's be real, he would fight anyone anytime. No weight issues during his fights and always ready to throw it down. He may not have won the UFC/Bellator title but he won our heart.
His biggest regret is being too good. That the next generation will feel subpar no matter what they do, because they can't outdo uncle chaels undefeated, undisputed resume.
Chael P Sonnen: 31 wins by ko, 17 by submission, 1 win by the opponent verbally tapping out as soon as the fight started because he saw the biggest arms in west Lynn Oregon. Undefeated. undisputed. untested.
Kenny Venegas - I fuckin hate this joke Yes he was undefeated but he did lose 2 rounds in his career 1 to Bisping and 1 to Silva Chael P Sonnen and the P stands for GANGSTER
he was the only one that had Anderson beat ...almost anyways ...hey Anderson silva was in my opinion the greatest fighter in ufc history ...he was better than jon jones , who cheated with steroids ,before his injury he had beat everybody ,legends in 2 weight classes 2.

I was really hoping, that right at the end of this beautiful monologue, right there in its last second, he would drop "..and thus my biggest mistake in my mma carrier, was letting Anderson Silva triangle me"
Guys, everyone! Chael - it’s an AirDyne bike. Pronounced air-dine. I own one and four times a week it wants to kill me. Anything above 60 RPM for more than a minute increases your chance of dying both exponentially and instantaneously. 80 RPM is crazy!
This is so relevant in sports today - for fitness - do what you will be doing in your sport. I had a cricket coach that has a Doctorate in Sports Medicine. He was our cricket coach - and he used to say - the only time you jog, is for warm up, to get your heart rate up. He said - if you want to jog 5 miles a day - then do so if you run road races. We jogged for warm up, and for fitness, we sprinted - a lot. Because in cricket, you sprint most of the time - fielding a ball, running between the wickets. So your comment on jumping rope for boxing, MMA is 100%. Unless you're Connor McGregor who starts jogging in the octagon when he's tired, there is no reason to jog. Rugby and soccer - you can jog, but NOT at an easy pace, because you'll also have times when you need to sprint. And in rugby and soccer - speed is everything. The other thing on fitness for these sports where you sprint - is to do the sprints with short rest periods in between, to teach your body to recover faster. So we would sprint from one end to another, then walk or jog back slowly. I love your Channel - just working too hard the last few weeks to catch all your videos.
Chaels MMA career isn't over, He may not fighting but I'd rather listen to chael that most other MMA "journalists". This bad man has brought more fans to MMA than most current fighters will.
Uncle Chael this wisdom came at a very crucial time, this knowledge wasn't revolutionary to me, however it has definelty reminded me of some past ideals and training methods, thank you.
You can learn a concept (leg locks exist) in one go, but learning a skill, like a leg lock or guitar, takes many repetitions, starting from slow, perfect repetitions, and then speeding up. Training for an MMA match? It doesn't make sense to do much more than the regulation time. Full-blast full-body workouts ... basically HIIT for five minutes, then again for five minutes. Honestly, I'd like to see some stats for heart rate for different phases of a fight. Seems like it's pretty clear what people need ... they need to work on their weaknesses. Some people need more strength, hit the weights hard. Some people get gassed, swimming or running or cycling. Some people need more power, lift weights fast. Some people need more speed ... well ...
I used to work out at a gym with a professional body builder. He taught me to start out with the lightest weight and perfect your form before you moved up in weight. Slow and steady before you go hard and fast.
His biggest regret is never losing a round cause that would make him seem more human then he actually is and get more affection from audience and fans. But he stayed on the righteous path of being undefeated and undisputed out of principle. People paid to see him never go down and not to be entertained.
That's life though, is that not how School kind of is. When you go to college, you are forced to take a lot of classes, that you hope will cross over into what you want to do. Some of these things cross over fairly well some of them don't. If I was going to have an MMA fight, and all I did was powerlifting, and running. Will I become a better fighter? I think the answer is yes, because there will be a crossover effect. But I think you could make the argument that I would become a better fighter if I did more sparring, and other activity that are specific to mma. But if I'm already super technical, and my physical fitness was kind of weak then it would be better to focus a lot more on the fitness aspect. If you're in a combat sport you always want to have your physical attributes at a high level. Don't forget, Bob Sapp did beat Ernesto Hoost twice.
I played basketball in highschool. We shared the gym with the wrestling team. Our coach was good buds with the wrestling coach. So we would train a 1/2 hour a day with the wrestlers during training camp. I never puked so much in my life. They station trash barrels around the gym to puke in. We did Z drills. Sprint to certain lines on the court and at the end do 30 push-ups and alternate with the chin up racks. It was unbelievable for a 17 year old kid. Awesome. Nothing but deep admiration for wrestlers.
its called "grease the groove", mainstream popularized by Pavel Tsatsouline way back , he has helped many champions across a wide range of sports, and this concept is still relevant today. Not only does it makes sense, its the best approach in every way in terms of level, energy at disposal, time and your given sport. Do your thing at your best, rest and then do it again. sounds simple enough but good candidates fall into weird routines still even to this day, ok great
When I used to box i got shin splints very bad and had to sideline some roadwork. My coach had me do stationary bikes but it wasnt cutting it for me. His next idea was start sprint swimming. I would never swim in a boxing ring and was skeptical at first but that season was the best gas tank and conditioned I ever was. I always push people to do hard swimming a couple months before a wrestling match or boxing match now. Might have been mental but not being able to breathe and digging deep to keep under and push to the end really helped ME out.
Chanel sonnen. In regards to exercises that translate to on mat skill. The answer is that sprints, bike, etc are ways to increase heart. Strength(in all ways physical and emotional) risk free of accidental injury that always accompanied drilling and other practice for combat sports. So while they were not completely applicable to mat skill they reduce the risk of injury while at the same time increasing some other physical or mental aspect of the athlete. There you have it
This was the John Smith approach: to be a better wrestler, he wrestled. He didn't lift weights, or condition, or cut a ton of weight. His match against Sarkissian echoes the physical disparity between Adesanya and Costa. Smith was a guy who wrestled very very well but would come in last in any bodybuilding contest.
I get u Chael! Todays training methods are not yet reached perfection by any human but for sure they have got better and still getting better. I just wanna say this so u don't have to regret so badly, maybe the way u trained was very good for u because like if u only trained sport specific movements u could have got more injuries so all the sprinting and aero bikes are necessary because u can mix up ur training and train more by doing that and preventing injuries. Sorry for the name I made this account when I was 9 years old and sorry for broken english It is my second languange
If you've noticed he's gained about 25k subs just since the last pay per view. I'd imagine if all you had to do was analyze a sport you're an expert in for that kind of gain, you would right?
I've been saying this forever, all these exercises are useless for fighting, the only strength and conditioning exercises u need are: shadow fighting, mitt work, bag work. These are fully translated to fighting oh and ofcourse u do them for as many rounds as u would normally be fighting
Never earning championship. In The way you described it to you father. (Obviously, you misspoke. Then ) Your a champion of in our eyes. Like it or not.
I think there would be more than one answer for this question. At what point in your mma career are we talking about. Are we going by every 3-5 years over the 2+ decades of said mma career. Or is it in it's entirety. It's definitely a complicated answer. it's pretty amazing watching so many fighters get better through the years and fighting into their mid-forties. Impressive!
In all seriousness ppl forget cheal was the first person to actually whip anderson Silva's ass yea silva got the win but cheal beat the hell outta him so bad that at the time it blew my mind I was a lil kid and was a big silva fan amd at the time siva was destroying everyone and cheal came in and beat the hell out of him. Cheal is definitely one of the non champs that should be in the ufc hall of fame
When it’s the 5th round of a championship fight, and you’re gassed out, your arms are rubber, and your legs feel like they’re weighed down by concrete. That extra work you did on the bike to give you that last bit of cardio to be fresher than your opponent is gonna be more applicable than any extra grappling you put in at the end of a workout. If you are at the level where you have been practicing those moves to the extent that you have made it to the UFC, those moves have become part of your muscle memory and just happen without even thinking. But if you are not physically capable of pulling those moves off because your cardio has abandoned you, it won’t matter how many times you’ve worked on them, you’ll be too gassed to effectively use them. Cardio is king, and is the only attribute that will allow you to continue when every other fiber of your being is telling you you’re done.

Totally agree.
Chaels biggest regret is not letting anyone win a round he felt bad for his opponents
Unless you count the round against Anderson Silva that he tapped thinking that meant the end of the round not the fight 😆😆
Uncle Chael’s biggest regret during his MMA career is definitely retiring undefeated, undisputed. He didn’t pass the torch to the next generation.
