They responded to those letters absolutely savagely back then. For example, in once issue, somebody complains about them printing letters that don't directly relate to video games, and their response is "but then we wouldn't have printed yours".

"Nothing brings back memories like looking through an issue of Nintendo Power." Let me correct your statement. It should be: Nothing brings back memories like watching an old episode of AVGN.
But it's just not the same. It's like how Shonen Jump went digital. I missed getting them in mail. I remember getting excited to get home from school to see the new issue waiting for me in my room for me to take to school the next day.
It amazes me that this video came out when I was 8… I'm almost 21. These videos never really age. I've replayed them all probably over a million times and they still feel strangely new.
I find it funny after all these years the "Zelda Rap" printed in Nintendo Power and credited to a kid was already a Zelda commercial. So the kid wrote down what was said in the commercial and sent it to Nintendo Power and got credit for it?
yoshi mario I wonder that myself, actually. If the kid stole the rap or the kid wrote it and they used it in the commercial... its hard to say, considering they could have used the rap originally to advertise the game and the kid took it or they later released the commercial after the game had been out and used the kid's rap. I wouldn't mind knowing for sure.
I was a poor kid, so I didn't have Nintendo Power. I barely had a Nintendo. Still, I've always loved coming back to this episode and sharing in James' nostalgia and joy. That's how great AVGN was in its prime. I still enjoy it, but these were the days.
So there are a total of one vigintillion, 978 novemdecillion, 857 octodecillion, 121 septendecillion, 979 sexdecillion, 410 quindecillion images to create on a single page of Mario Paint?!
I'm like 90% sure the "grey" cover was one of these rubbing things. You know, hold a blank piece of paper on it, rub it all over with a pencil and bam, picture.
+Euph i think it was the same with all video game magazines around the world during that time period. i remember that replies to readers' letters published in the magazines in my country were more or less kept in the same tone as those in the Nintendo Power. most of those guys had barely left college by this time and they still wanted to be "cool" and "radical" and stuff. but even as a kid i thought they tended to cross the line between trolling and just being plain rude just a bit too often (and even when it was just harmless trolling, you couldn't help but feel frustrated when they didn't even answer the guy's question just for the sake of being funny)
11:43 Little Ian seemed to make a mistake there. Actually there are a total of 4.64×10⁴⁹⁰⁰⁰ possible drawings to create, i.e. several tens of thousands orders of magnitude more than the 1.98×10⁶⁹ he calculated.
well not when drawing in a game like mario paint, and thinking about it, not even in real life. The number of possibilities is of course unfathomably huge, but not "literally endless".
Hot Bakery Eclipse, no, when you are talking about any computer data de possibilities are not endless since its always a combinations of 1 and 0. For example, there is a finite number of audio recordings you can have on a CD, that includes all the possible conversations between two people that can fit on a CD and all the possible music that can fit on a CD. A drawing on mario paint is easier than that, since its a finite combination of colors on a grid.
I think honestly that Optic Man would have been REALLY interesting! Imagine beating him and gaining the power of X-Ray vision! Like, you get to see through walls and blocks that you once thought were just part of the background, but are actually breakable boundaries that contain health and items! That...would have been cool.
My dad recently gave me a box he found in storage--it had all my Nintendo Power magazines in it! The volumes span from the launch of the GameCube until the end of the Wii-era.

It would have been awfully nice if Nintendo had just given their blessings. Although I did hear Nintendo plans to re-release those comics in the magazine as stand alone merchandise, or some shit.
From actually paying more attention to the calculation at 11:42 after all these years, I've discovered that it was done incorrectly. Because the 41,664 dots are each a place for 1 of 15 different colors to exist, the calculation should have been done as follows: possible images = 15^(41,664) Ian incorrectly flipped the numbers and did: possible images = 41,664^(15). The grey covered issue at 4:58 was a special issue that had an embossed image of Mega Man on the front grey cover in addition to the regular color version of the cover underneath. I looks like the issue in this episode had its embossing flattened over the years, so it looks blank. I remember the issue distinctly because when I was a child I would take pencil rubbings of the cover and then color Mega Man.
it's right there! the effect is called "stereogram", go look it up! the image itself is a quite awful end-of-century render of mario smiling, in case you are wondering..
+Vasectomy Fail Nah, it works perfectly onscreen too. I can see it every time by pausing the video. And once I get the focus right, as I let the video contine I can still see Mario's face zooming in with the image, which is pretty cool.
4:56 ‘this one’s cool cause it’s an owl and owls are cool’ That line has never really left my head for 15 years or so. Because it’s true, even if it’s said so casually.
13:22 Whoever wrote that letter has a very good point, that is still Nintendo's problem today and is why they are lagging behind Sony and Microsoft. If only Nintendo actually took this guys letter seriously they wouldn't be so far behind in sales.
+Max Renauldo Actually, Nintendo isn't isn't lagging behind if your count quality in games. Sure, the graphics aren't as "amazing" as Xbox and PS, but where Nintendo lacks graphics, they pick up with gameplay quality. Plus, Nintendo has it's fair share of mature games. They're not specifically by Nintendo, though.
MrCriticism They are lacking in sales tho. The Wii U floped so bad they were talking about just making games and software from now on and stop making consoles
Max Renauldo The sales are only bad because they don't have the *exact* same library as Xbox and PS. Plus, I *_HIGHLY_* doubt Nintendo will stop making consoles. They literally announced one a couple months ago.
Big K do you know what volume it is? I couldn’t really make out which it is but if you tell me that I can look through my collection and tell you what it is.
TheDoctor64 yeah after the rating system came in Nintendo mostly lost hope on kids so they decided alot of kids like rated M games let's give them what they want cause at the beginning of xbox 360 and ps3 more mature games came on and other rated E games kinda died off a little so Nintendo just was like fuck the kids there becoming teens now

4:52 I still can't see the face WTF
I can’t either
Bottom right, there's a white face
either that or the "smile" where the camera is zooming in on
One of the best AVGN episodes
YES!
RIP Nintendo Power 1988-2012
***** And it's next to die...
I come back to this episode just for the ass jump scare.
same!
@@KeeperOfPoops it kind of reminds me of k fee
“Remember Star Fox 2, the game that never saw the light of day?”
SNES Classic & NSO: Allow us to fix that for you!
4:54 I still can't see any face.
it's right there! the effect is called "stereogram", go look it up! the image itself is a quite awful end-of-century render of mario smiling, in case you are wondering..
Dang it, I was on the phone and didn't care to check manually for the timecode. My apologies.
SantiN90
no problem, i tried the stereogram part too, i think they only work on print...
+Vasectomy Fail Nah, it works perfectly onscreen too. I can see it every time by pausing the video. And once I get the focus right, as I let the video contine I can still see Mario's face zooming in with the image, which is pretty cool.
I can't seem to find the horrible advert he stapled shut. Volume 82, March 1996. ?? I go the PDF, and its just the toenail clippings?
my most favorite line in AVGN history
"And if my game said "cheese" I think i'd shit my pants, and if I was wearing that, i'd have problems"
4:56 ‘this one’s cool cause it’s an owl and owls are cool’
That line has never really left my head for 15 years or so.
+Max Renauldo So, I take it that "Friends" episode never aired, then?
+Max Renauldo Actually, Nintendo isn't isn't lagging behind if your count quality in games. Sure, the graphics aren't as "amazing" as Xbox and PS, but where Nintendo lacks graphics, they pick up with gameplay quality. Plus, Nintendo has it's fair share of mature games. They're not specifically by Nintendo, though.
MrCriticism They are lacking in sales tho. The Wii U floped so bad they were talking about just making games and software from now on and stop making consoles
Max Renauldo
The sales are only bad because they don't have the *exact* same library as Xbox and PS. Plus, I *_HIGHLY_* doubt Nintendo will stop making consoles. They literally announced one a couple months ago.
MrCriticism *cool* story *BRO*
hey James, I love the Double Vision song, I think that you should release an album for all the songs that have been on the Angry Video Game Nerd
+Christopher Stonecipher Double vision is a song by the band Foreigner
oh
+Christopher Stonecipher youd like steve miller band, tom petty and dire straits
It's off the album Double Vision from 1978.
Remembered the "Nintendo Power" song at 2am and I needed to watch
Anyone here after avgn video game magazines?
What does the disgusting page he stapled look like though. Got me curious as hell.
@@johnboona4048 I've always wondered that myself.
@@bigkmoviesandgames I read the comments here and some say it's an ad for a jar of toenails.
@@johnboona4048 it could be although he showed the toenail one in this episode so I would assume its something else
Big K do you know what volume it is? I couldn’t really make out which it is but if you tell me that I can look through my collection and tell you what it is.
11:15 Don't they mean a weegee board?
No
Yes
Weegee
8:52.
So, Jamie Kennedy was a Nintendo Power subscriber.
When I tried to skip the intro, I skipped to 0:54 when he was about to say "Rotten asshole", so it played like this: he'd rather eat the Sega nerd.
“Remember Star Fox II, the game that never saw the light of day?”
Until 2017....
Who cares
13:23 what the hell happened to their marketing? they don't do that anymore.
It was Nintendo trying to be "older" with their advertising as they were competing with Sega and seen as the child of the gaming industry.
the rise of M+17 games just made Nintendo to give up on being more mature
Videogame magazines are not exactly so useful nowadays
TheDoctor64 yeah after the rating system came in Nintendo mostly lost hope on kids so they decided alot of kids like rated M games let's give them what they want cause at the beginning of xbox 360 and ps3 more mature games came on and other rated E games kinda died off a little so Nintendo just was like fuck the kids there becoming teens now
JamesPlaysGames95 they saved it all up for the Nintendo Switch
Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street
A horrifying double feature from LJN.
Wow, they got that right.
RIP Nintendo Power
1988-2012
it will be sadly missed
Looks like now.....
*put sunglasses on*
Nintendo doesnt have any power
If that Nintendo power editor is here today, he'd be deemed a hero.
@10:35
"Do your Nintendo tapes only last five years? Does it matter if you set them on chairs or if you put the controllers on the floor?"
I get that he's calling cartridges "tapes," but really what is the person even asking?
9:40 Gotta love, how they’re basically admitting that you’re not, where the fun is:
”Where’s the fun?”
”Where you’re not. Trololol!”
2:50 That was me! When I was 8 I took a picture when I scored over 200,000 on Pinball. Picture looked just like that and I still have it.

Who's here after watching the episode on gaming magazines?
1:19 I laughed at James Rolfe when he munched on a piece of paper from a Nintendo Power magazine
Old Millennial: Why back in my day we didn't have this new fangled super internet we had to walk 15 miles through the snow to get the latest issue of Nintendo power, and with no shoes
I remember that MegaMan contest. I was disappointed that my submission of KimmyGibblerTurdSaladMan didn't get selected.
That advice though (targeting the older audience) nintendo should have really learnt from it
Jonty Rodrigues RARE seemed to fulfill that request with Conker's Bad Fur Day, so Nintendo has them to thank for it.
@Allison Yamada What, Ow the Edge?
Nintendo did learn. Remember how the launch Nintendo Switch adverts featured only adults?
7:40 had me dying cause that’s exactly how I would have reacted 😂
8:17 ARGH IT STINKS!
the best part was when you got a special "strategy guide" for a specific game... full walkthroughs and maps for games like final fantasy.
