As someone who did the DigiPen Project Fun program almost every summer, (as well as being accepted into the college this coming fall) I can confirm it was pretty cool. I started doing it well past the point where they offered the Nintendo of America Tours, but it was a very fun program. They taught you basics of game development from a variety of different angles, like programming, art, etc. Also, almost all the counselors working there were Digipen students themselves, so you were able to learn and talk to people who were also learning stuff like this.
My very first issue happens to be the final issue that my mom bought for me at Walmart. Ever since then, I have been subscribed to Nintendo Force Magazine, the spiritual successor to Nintendo Power.
@ 7:56 the message about The Conduit was submitted by my older brother! He was your typical Xbox live teenager on a steady diet of CoD and Halo at the time, its really funny going back and reading this. Good times, I miss Nintendo Power a lot.
I collected Nintendo Power throughout the early-mid '90s and one of the wildest things that I REALLY wish they'd kept up with was: they used to have short, single-chapters of comics starring Nintendo characters. There was a Mario, a Legend of Zelda, and a Metroid comic that all told a long-term story over the course of several months, and as a kid who used to read manuals for lore, it was SO COOL to have a more in-depth story to go with them.
Spielberg also created the Medal of Honor series as a whole as well as produced and wrote the first game and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. He's not just the Boom Blox guy he's also the Medal of Honor guy. And actually those early MoH games do not get enough credit I like them a lot.
@@lucasLSD Of course. I remember when they were a big deal and they obviously inspired Call of Duty among many, many other WW2 shooters, I just mean they don't get enough credit now. Which I stand by absolutely.
I subscribed to the Fun Club unbeknownst to me that it was at the tail end of it's life. They sent me the final issue of the newsletter then rolled me right into the the first issue of Nintendo Power and I stayed subscribed for many years. That's how I got a free copy of Dragon Warrior, lot's of strategy guides, and I won Mario Kart 64 in a contest.
I remember I did one of those Digipen summer programs when I was a kid. It was a bunch of university students teaching us basic game making and animation with the school software which I remember being decently sophisticated. We also got to tour NoA and buy discounted merch and games from the employee store which was neat.

when i was younger, i had a bunch of old nintendo power magazines from the second design of the magazine (around 2001, before the launch of the gba) all the way to 2007, so i have a lot of nostalgia for that era of nintendo power. i find it’s the main reason why i have such nostalgia for the gamecube and gba despite not really growing up with them.
My first issue of Nintendo Power I got from my friend was the October 1992 with Super Mario Kart cover, it was the magazine that made me want to get the SNES console! But I got my subscription of Nintendo Power around late 1995 when my school had Reader’s Digest fundraiser with yearly subscriptions of popular magazines at that time. I had Nintendo Power subscription until 2002!
I find old magazines cool to look through, especially for upcoming game releases as thay was written in a time no one had the games, and often the screenshots were of early versions of the games and its all like ooooh i wonder what luigis mansion is gonna be like
OH MY GOD I REMEMBER THIS ISSUE!!! My first was a few before this. Scott, I love your videos because I feel like nobody has followed video games the same way as I have, but you come the closest. I still think about your “childhood games” video all the time. Been a fan for years, keep it up! Every video you make brightens my day.
I used to have a Shonen Jump subscription when I was 10 and had like 30 mags. My mom threw them out because she thought they were satanic or something.
I think it's really weird that he literally SAYS why this was his first one; his mom subscribed him to it because she saw it and thought he'd like it; but because Scott fans have this weird parasocial vibe to them, they have to make up a reason why he picked this specific issue out, because for some reason ya'll think he's fucking nuts for Sonic. Like yeah he has a lot of nostalgia for the series but ya'll act like he's keeping up on the modern IDW comic he loves Sonic so much when really he just likes playing the first level of the first three games as a kid (because he couldn't beat the second ones).
Review of an unreleased Gauntlet DS game reminds me of the N64 version of 40 Winks which Official Nintendo Magazine reviewed before N64 version was cancelled. It was released years later trough Kickstarter though. PS1 version of 40 Winks even featured a quote on the cover from the Official Nintendo Magazine review "Move over Mario."
37:53 I actually ordered one in 2005 or so from the Nintendo Power ads. I have the Fairy Ocarina, but they also sold the Ocarina of Time as well. The one I own is Zelda-themed, as there is a triforce logo on the top just like the design in the game. I think the ones they sold years later might have had a different design. It came with a songbook that had a bunch of different tracks, some from Zelda, but then it had stuff like The Simpsons theme. It's unfortunately covered in dust, so I don't think I will play it, but it is neat to have. I don't remember if I ever got all that good at it, I think I was too young at the time to take it seriously, but I did try some of the songs.
Once I saw this ad, it all came back to me! I got the same one, the ocarina of time (blue with the triforce logo on it). The songbook was a light blue and had various Zelda themes (castle town from OoT was one of my favorite to play), but it also had like ave maria, the Simpsons theme, I feel like maybe something from the sound of music. Good times.
My first issue of NP was literally just one issue earlier. #235. Cover was Animal Crossing: City Folk. I read that magazine cover to cover tons of times back then - especially since, if I recall correctly, I didn't get a second issue until a few months later. The crazy thing is, even 16 years later, I can look at the issue (they're pretty much all online), and the pages and stories are still very familiar to me.
I have the same magazine, got it from a local video game store recently. What's sold me on this issue was the Zelda interview. It's nice to see that there was clearly a passion that would later be brought into OOT 3D.
I never read Nintendo Power, because we didn't grew up with Nintendo back in the day and I don't know if they ever issued them in Australia. I grew up with PC gaming, so I was more familiar with PC Powerplay back in the 90s and 2000s. I even remember when they used to have demo discs at Newsagents. One demo disc I remember fondly was the Xtreme Sports disc from 2003, which introduced me to a number of cool racing games, with one being a combat driving game, made by the same people who would later make the Bionic Commando remakes.
"Does this ruin the resale value to scribble out your address?" for video recording or listing purposes, some masking tape could be used for censoring the address. for resale purposes, I have no idea how to achieve that permanently without scribbling it using permanent marker other than moving away from that address.
DUDE this was my first Nintendo power issue as well! My brother got the magazine from 2002-2005, then I decided to get the magazine starting in 2008 until about a year before the magazine ended. Lots of great memories, but as time went on NP had less and less exclusive info, especially since I frequented IGN and Gametrailers all the time for gaming news. Still had a lot of fun reading NP each month
STL Ocarina has said a few times that a majority of their sales come from zelda fans, I've even ordered from them myself. It makes me smile to see that ad, and it definitely makes sense its there. I was so heartbroken when my ocarina broke during a move, maybe I'll grab another one, inspired by seeing that ad 😂
Did yours have the triforce design or did the later ones look more like in this advertisement? Because I don't know anybody else who ordered from them outside of me and my folks lol
You'd be surprised to see how the brazilian Nintendo World magazine was similar to NP at this time. I'm pretty sure they copied a lot of the designs and layouts, because even the fonts are the same.
I always have a soft spot for this era of Nintendo Power. This is where I got most of gaming related news back in the day and they got me to try out games that I have never thought of playing before like Punch Out, Okami, Tatsunoko vs Capcom and Scribblenauts.
That's so weird. I was just going through all of my old nintendo power magazines! I started only 5 months before you haha. My first issue was 231. Cover had Mad World on it
God, I miss Nintendo Power. My first issue was volume 215 (I think), the one with Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. If it wasn't for them, I don't think I would be as into gaming as I am now. They introduced me to games I never would have played on my own. I would love to collect every issue someday. My mom scored a huge collection of some of the oldest issues from a former church pastor, who gave it to us when they moved, but I still have a long way to go. Also, I'm insulted you confused Professor Layton and the Last Time Travel, or the Unwound Future, as the former was its name in Japan, with the Last Specter. Those were two completely different games.
If we aren't counting chocolates I guess gifts for family or friends not just lovers (going of say the friendship chocolates logic Japan has not the white day part). I get presents for Easter (that or other snacks then chocolate), birthday and Christmas. I mean they are business holidays or special events (birthday) so might as well as times to celebrate or cheap prices or enjoy and sent someone something for the time of the year.
I remember this one! Man I used to have a whole stack of years worth of Nintendo Power magazines in my closest growing up. Pretty sure I threw them all away at some point 😢 One of the most memorable ones for me was the Diamond/Pearl edition that just had a large picture of either Dialga or Palkia on the cover.
I learned to read with my old gaming magazines. I used to have every issue of Nintendo Power up to 1999 I think it was, along with every GamePro and some random others I forgot. I lost them all though in a tornado. I would love to get them again but it won't be the same since my name won't be on them, and getting them in the condition I had them in will be impossible to find. I kept those things super clean.
Damn you know Scott is young when his first Nintendo Power issue was in the Wii Era! I was alive during the NES Era but I didn’t get a subscription to Nintendo Power until the N64 Era!
Well the magazine didn't have the same punch as it did pre-Internet, so a lot more people just seem to have more memories of the early years. But yeah the magazine stuck around for a while, the final issue coincided with the Wii U launch in 2012.

Never read Nintendo Power as I'm from England but recently found my first issues of Total! And Super Play, they were my go to magazines back in the 90s
I didn't get Nintendo Power growing up, but I've definitely got a soft spot for magazines like this. Boys' Life was my go-to for long car rides - I remember the first time I heard about the 3DS was in an issue of Boys' Life I was reading in the back of my dad's car on a road trip up to Maine. Good times. There was one magazine in particular that I remember liking as a kid that I've stuck with into adulthood, which is Weird NJ. Sure, a lot of what they cover is bullshit, but it makes for a fun read.
My first issue was Vol 85, June of 1996, which was a preview for the N64. I had a subscription until June 2001, so basically the lifespan of the N64. So many fond memories.
This is wild, because this was my first issue as well! And I want to say we’re around the same age (born in 1997) it really was a great time to be a kid. Was a Nintendo kid growing up.
April 2000 was mine! Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater…had been reading off the grocery store shelves while Mom shopped since the N64 came out and they finally caved at that year’s school magazine sale
This was also about the time I starting paying attention to upcoming video games instead of just playing the hand-me-down consoles. Also when I eventually found out that Pokemon Gen 4 had been out for 2 years already :)
I first got my issue sometime in 2008 but don’t know which month and got a few more but I sadly lost them when my house caught on fire. I would collect them again with the July 2010 issue and would get every issue going forward up until the final issue in December 2012
30:37 I myself am a Rabbids fan and you probably would've enjoyed Rabbids Go Home since it's not a minigame compilation and it tries to do something fun and creative with the Rabbids (it also surprisingly has a lot of dark humor and adult jokes, even including some mild swearing. The previous games had that, but not to the extent that Rabbids Go Home had).
I did not expect to see Scott the Woz talking about how good Punch-Out is, I'm so glad to hear it as a huge Punch-Out fan. Right next to you hoping they bring it back, Scott.
Damn, this was one of the last few Nintendo Power issues I got in the mail. My first one was the Sonic Chronicles issue from the same year. I remember reading the previews section on that one and nearly shitting out a lung when I saw that there was gonna be a new Super Smash Bros and that Sonic was gonna be in it. It just isn't the same getting your vidya news from livestreams and Twitter.
I used to play that Star Wars The Clone Wars game a ton. It did not deserve a 4.0. I'd probably give it around a 6. It was really fun when I was little, though.
The first issue I had...if I remember correctly...had a picture of mario jumping made of clay. There was this weird lizard looking thing in the background. Wonder what that issue was...but I jest. My first issue was issue 5 of Nintendo Fun Club news. It had RC Pro Am on the cover.
can't wait until scott is nostalgic for princess peach: showtime! "That was the year when nintendo was trying ANYTHING to extend the switch's lifespan, even though we all knew, a switch 2 would inevitably be around the corner"

I love scott reading old magazines and pamphlets almost as much as I love my GF
Bro is the Stephen King of TH-cam. I’m talking, prolific with the length, quality, and upload schedule of these videos 😂😂

I'd just bring my gameboy, but that's cool, too.
This is wild, because this was my first issue as well! And I want to say we’re around the same age (born in 1997) it really was a great time to be a kid. Was a Nintendo kid growing up.
The KH: 358/2 Days issue was one I will always treasure.
Have you not played the Unwound Future? That isn’t very Gentlemanly of you, Scott.
I loooooooved We Ski and Snowboard as a kid!
Did you ever go on NSider? That could make a good snippet/stash
Deadly Creatures is a throwback to me
YOU DON’T REMEMBER UNWOUND FUTURE?!
28:23 that's obviously Unwound Future.
That’s a deep cut!
I did not expect to see Scott the Woz talking about how good Punch-Out is, I'm so glad to hear it as a huge Punch-Out fan. Right next to you hoping they bring it back, Scott.
My first issue of Nintendo Power was this issue as well! My sister bought me a one year subscription for my birthday.
“2008 was a year of very high highs and low lows
For Nintendo”
Lol
Damn, this was one of the last few Nintendo Power issues I got in the mail. My first one was the Sonic Chronicles issue from the same year. I remember reading the previews section on that one and nearly shitting out a lung when I saw that there was gonna be a new Super Smash Bros and that Sonic was gonna be in it. It just isn't the same getting your vidya news from livestreams and Twitter.
I used to play that Star Wars The Clone Wars game a ton. It did not deserve a 4.0. I'd probably give it around a 6. It was really fun when I was little, though.
Love the Animal Crossing Wild World music in the background
The version of Boom Blox for the N-Gage 2.0 was amazing.
MARBLE SAGA MENTIONED!!!! That’s one of my favorite Wii games of all time and nobody ever talks about it!
Scott’s mom knew he had no game so she gave him My Sims Kingdom
Thanks. Now I feel old, because the SNES was the current Nintendo console when I was 5. I never had one, unfortunately.
I subscribed to the very first 2 years of Nintendo Power. Got the free Dragon Warrior by mail. My first RPG. LOVED IT!
Shit he can read now. All our comments prior to this video were all for not.
The first issue I had...if I remember correctly...had a picture of mario jumping made of clay. There was this weird lizard looking thing in the background. Wonder what that issue was...but I jest. My first issue was issue 5 of Nintendo Fun Club news. It had RC Pro Am on the cover.
Wow the motion blur in house of the dead overkill looks really good on the wii.
can't wait until scott is nostalgic for princess peach: showtime! "That was the year when nintendo was trying ANYTHING to extend the switch's lifespan, even though we all knew, a switch 2 would inevitably be around the corner"
my first Nintendo power said "GONZO GAMING" on the front, had chibi robo on it and some stuff about twilight princess. still have every issue. I was subbed from that moment until they stopped.
my room was covered in posters
10:45 that hurts
Is this the arc of Scott doing a CGQ+ like series?
Would love an episode on every single nintendo power magazine that ever came out....
No falling off comments? The falling off commenters are falling off.
Let me know when the bots show up.
Too late, just saw one
I’m just so used to seeing them at this point and I just question to myself “how long has this platform been completely dead”
I don’t remember my first issue, I occasionally have an issue bought for me by a parent, but I did have a subscription from 2004-2005
