And Cowboy Bebop is commonly hated online nòt because it's bad, but ònly because hating on adaptations is popular and no one bothered to watch the anime, or they would've known that Bebop was a passion project for the Studio ànd John Cho, who had been advocating for a live action since his early 20's. Also thè first Western anime adaptation that got such a huge budget, which they then practically doubled for One Piece. Cowboy Bebop was created by the same studio that's behind One Piece. Tomorrow Studios. These people are HUGE otaku. The fact no one in the community even knew this, and it's news to everyone I tell it too; just shows how little people cared about the Bebop anime and how their hate was just blind and for their own entertainment. Not genuine in any way.

no kidding. if this ends up being a super mario movie type situation. where everyone was scared when it got announces then as the trailers came out it looked better and better. and when it came out it was actually good. if that happens im gonna be over the moon.

They completely ignored any advice the original director Shinichiro Watanabe had. They drastically changed important story plots and characters to the point they were unrecognizable. Absolutely nothing you said was correct.
Plus his actor was in a show called the Imperfects. And he shows that he can act Very serious at times. Which seeing here that he can also act goofy really improves my opinion of him playing as Luffy. I’m confident in Inaki to Bring Luffys character to life with both the Goofy scenes AND the very serious scenes.
If Oda approved the series to be launched, I think fans should definitely give it a shot without shooting it down right away. I truly believe that the production team did the best they could do under Oda's guidance and the other restrictions and timing issues they may have faced.
The way I've seen Iñaki act behind the scenes - he's spot-on, honestly. He's loud and extroverted and seems to have zero filter, but he's also very emotionally invested and just such a happy-go-lucky guy. Genuinely, I love him for Luffy and I can't wait to see more of him.
It looks like Arlong pops up in both Buggy's Big Top AND Baratie, which means he's mostly likely chasing and pursuing Nami throughout the entire show as the overarching, looming threat of the entire season! VERY interesting change and it makes alot of sense to change it this way for a new audience.
My friend and I are betting that Don Krieg is gonna start stuff at Baratie and then Arlong and his crew will just smack them down to show you how dangerous he is. Since during that point of the story Krieg is considered a beast with his weaponry. So then to have Arlong come up and just lay them out and demand Nami get back to the park will show a power dynamic.
Keeping tabs on his navigator in the background would actually be a nice touch to East Blue, I think. Just a shadow of a Fishman in the corner of her eye to never let her forget her debt or flee. Maybe see grunt Fishman brokering deals with who ended up the other main villains in the saga for another layer of interconnectivity. Though, that may be quite a bit too much.
I think arlong appears at buggys circus after they leave, to show that he's hunting them. Than after the Don krieg fight where luffy would still be winded suprise him with his strength and leave with nami He is in this, the website has kreig's wanted poster lol

Same, brother. I started in 2002 with kaizoku fansubs. My wife and I did the translation for one of the Alabasta episodes. Having a weekly chapter to look forward to all these years is one of the great constants on my life. Live action really captures the feel!
The people who remember Kaizoku fansubs are some true long time fans. I loved how they did the attacks with the special text. Really made it extra special. Amazing to hear you and your wife did a translation for one of those. That basically means I must have watched it. Once ONE PIECE ends, I feel like when the final chapter comes I’ll also be closing a chapter to my life. Sounds excessive but it’s true 😂
I’m also a fan for over 20 years and a female. I was also VERY worried about how they’re going to handle Nami for “modern audiences”. It does look like they’re going to have her fight and do the “walk to Arlong Park” Which to me fully changes the whole character scene. Nami was always on her own and felt like she didn’t have anyone to turn to. Then Luffy became someone she trusted enough to ask for help. To me that scene shows the Strawhats for the first time working together towards a single goal. And it was to help Nami.
yeah the entire point is she finally DOESNT have to fight this fight for her village after doing it alone for so long. i hope she doesnt lose all her femininity. part of her character is using her feminine side to get what she wants. shes also never been a big fighter, her hits are strong but zero defenses and only slightly more bravery than usopp.
I am also a fan for 20 years ✊✖️ I however wouldn't mind nami having a little action 🙈 maybe standing back with the villagers and protecting them from random fishman or something. We will see. But The big fight action should def be filled with the boys 🙈
just because she walked to arlong park with the boys doesn't mean she's fighting. she could just as easily be there to witness the outcome of the fight.
Maybe she go with them to tell Arlong that she will not be helping him anymore, like to annouce that he have to fucking die. She probably will not have a much to do during this time.
In Oda's message, he said that the production team promised him they will only release it if Oda satisfied. We can only have our opinion but it's approved by Oda the GOAT himself.

I think he captured Luffy's energy fr. I think it just came from the fact that there are a lot of expectations coming from him being Luffy. It begs the question, who could do it better? Everything was Oda approved, so I'm trusting that.
This is something I am actually hopeful for. They’re changing things, but 1:1 would be boring. Get the characters and the important story moments right, and make it 90-95% match. The fact they’re asking Oda for his approval and taking his advice is helpful. I will also watch it twice, once in English and once in Japanese as the actual anime cast will voice over
I think it's kind of weird, that people complain about this goofy tone of the Trailers, when the Anime is exactly like that. Yes it's kind of weird to see that in Live Action, but after all i think after getting used to it, it might be pretty good. I mean the first time i watched the Anime, i didn't liked it either because of the goofy tone, but i got used to it and learned to love it.
Same here brother. Been following this masterfully wrought tale for half my life (42 now). I'm hopeful for this adaption. Arlong looks 'meh,' however it's pleasing to see they didn't overly CGI the antagonist there. Practical effects are always welcome! Buggy looks and sounds GREAT! So far it seems they might have the bromance between Sanji and Zoro down. The main cast looks good. I can't wait to see what they have in store for us. And yes... Luffy is that one character with shoes nearly impossible to fill. I wish the cast well in bringing our favorite story to life. God speed, StrawHat Grand Fleet. What a time to be alive. May we all live to see it's conclusion.

What I want to know is how extensive is Oda's involvement on this? If this has to be approved by Oda before filming, then I would accept it.
Oda said in a recent message to the fans that the whole series had to be approved by him and only got released once he gave his seal of approval. They even reshot some scenes, because he felt they weren’t good enough. He closely worked together with the production team and his opinion was highly regarded.
In reality, most episodes of one piece average around 20 minutes. Subtract duplicate scenes from flashbacks, overly long scenes that are stretched out to fit time blocks for the episode and you can save some time here and there. A10 hour production can house 30 episodes comfortably and with Arlong park finishing around the 40ep mark, I think they have it pretty much perfect.
I'm glad that they're likely not going to change the Nami scene, from what you said if they attempted something like that, that would completely undervalue the actual strength of her character. But with all of that said, it looks pretty exciting, the way they're having fun with a lot of the settings. Arlong Park being a legit water theme park, Buggy's base being a proper circus. The stunts and choreography are slightly jank but it looks like its gonna be in a fun way. I'm super happy overall with what we've seen so far

The final scene of Luffy vs Arlong wasn't the gatling, it was him using gum gum battle axe to destroy the building. They didn't spoil the end of the fight.

I don't wanna be an Iñaki Godoy defence squad person, cause what you said is so true, but I really am so glad that it is Iñaki cast as Luffy. As a kid his personality and behaviour was already so similar; Pulling silly pranks, smiling in an ambulance, saying he is elastic and wanting to be a competitive eater. From his acting I really saw his serious side too. He is a more clever version of Luffy imo. He is lacking a bit of the "blank" and "clueless" look... Ya know, when all Luffy can think of is adventure and food, the "Ha???" face, the blank stare, nothing going on in behind those eyes... If Iñaki can pull off the "???" clueless face to balance out the serious side and him being so much more clever then it is perfect.
They nailed it in sense of setting the mood. I'm getting positive vibes overall but they need to give us over the top comedy scenes and drama scenes perfectly. Let's see about that.

Max i know how you feel, I was watching One Piece in Greek Television, under the name, Captain Drake :), i was 11 annd it was my favorite tv program. Unfortunately they ended the show at episode 100. When i became 19, someone in the university told my about that Captain Drake is actually named One Piece and it is still running! I still remember how happy i was that i found this treasure again. Now i am 32, and i can say that One Piece brings the same happiness. it's more than a show. I wish everyone who loves One Piece will be healthy and well to see the end of this journey Peace :)
Really good reaction to a show I am excited to see. I don't have any misgivings concerning Loofy's actor. He looks the part, and is appropriately funny, goofy, and serious as the seen needs. Add the exotic flare from his slight Mexican accent, and to me he seems perfect for the part.
Dude, i started with One Piece when i was 9 and now i'm 37. Pausing the video is totally understandable. I paused it like 20 times and even started crying and laughing because i couldn't believe this is getting a western TV Series FOR REAL. This is out of this world and i'm so f-ing glad i'm alive to witness it!
I'm more concern about Ussop than Luffy. We don't see much about him in the trailer and I don't know if he has on him the comical persona he should represent and It's a character that have a lot of screen time in earlies arcs.
Let's say every episode has 12 minutes of relevant plot, ( op, ed, previously on, next episode preview, flashbacks, 40 episodes in 8 hours is absolutely doable.
This gives me STRONG Hook(1991) vibes. I love it. As for the anime itself, I've never watched it, or read the manga. It's just too damn long 😅 For the fans' sake, I really hope this will be a good adaptation. We all know that Netflix has a truly shit reputation when it comes to anime.

Other adaptations from other studios, from a different era, with different actors, writers and directors. But most of; small tiny budgets. OPLA had nòthing to do with that. Nor with your paranoia, nor should it be responsible for the paranoia you feel because of different projects from completely different people. The ònly thing you can use as a reference; is the Cowboy Bebop live action. Created by the same studio that's behind One Piece, Tomorrow Studios. No, not netflix. Netflix does. Not. Create. Content. Nami emotional scene is really important, I think it's the arc that gets most ppl hooked to the manga, so I hope they not only do it decent, but excellent on that.
I do feel like Inaki (luffy's actor) captures Luffy's personality very very well as they both have the same chaotic happy energy, but I do understand your concerns because Luffy's serious moments are very vital for his character and we haven't seen if Inaki can pull those moments off yet.
As a North Carolinian, that sushi story made me chuckle. There's a ton of great sushi places, but man do I hate when I see westernized sushi that is more bastardized than anything else.
I imagine the Arlong story is going to be the main one as it's the biggest arc during the whole East Blue arc which is mostly about Luffy recruiting the first crewmembers. Having him actively pursue Nami also sells him more as a threat and maybe they want to emphasise Nami's reasons for betraying them better than could be managed otherwise in 8 episodes. They had a lot of time in the anime spent on her backstory and her reasons for doing what she did along with Arlong's control over her which they can't cover in 8 live action episodes along with introducing all the other characters plus have other baddies appear. Having Nami's backstory run through all of it with the big payoff at the end makes more sense. Turning anime into live action is tough without it looking too cheesy and if the cast and crew don't care at all then it can go wrong like with Cowboy Bebop but it seems so far they worked really hard on this and actively want to make it something good.
Fishmen at the Baratie initially seemed wrong but it actually is great for two reasons They realized Arlong Park is the best part of East Blue and should be their focus. And it actually makes Arlong the threat he is always talked up to be. In the manga and anime they always talked about how Arlong was this big menace in the East Blue but really all we see him do is torment One Village and sit on his chair.
I've only recently finished watching the arlong park arc in the anime and i gotta say, don krieg was kinda meh as a villain like i couldn't take him that seriously as the "strongest man in the east blue" or whatever so if his scenes are cut down a bit in favor of arlong showing up and obliterating everyone at the baratie, i wouldn't mind that
I like Godoy, I think he deserves a chance. True enough though, in all likelihood, he might be the only person to ever get a chance to play Luffy in live action.
Nakama, I've been a One Piece anime fan for 23 years and 20 years for the manga now (I have no way of knowing at that time that there is a manga), how crazy is that?! This is a testament that so many of us were and still are being touched by One Piece. Cheers to us!
God I am certain Matt Owens and Oda had to fight for "Help Me" to stay in the show. A empowered woman learning to trust and rely on her male friends? They couldn't even let Prince Eric the experienced sailor steer the ship into Ursula. It doesn't matter if that "Help Me" is the most impactful scene in the entire saga, it doesn't matter that it's beautiful character growth. I am certain they had executives and "sensitivity readers" giving all kinds of opposition but I'm grateful that Matt Owens is such a fan and Oda had so much control. Or this could easily be a Wheel of Time situation.

The reason really why oda agreed to make this live action is for those who are not into the op anime or anime in general to be part of the OP family.. we all know that fans who supports oda will already watch this and he already know that.. this live action are really made for non fans hahaha
You are right, and wrong at the same time. OP fans will already watch the show, but they will absolutely hate it if it's any thing less than perfect. New fans don't give them that much revenue compared to hardcore fanbase. And old fanbase are working adult now, mean so much more money. This care and production value is for the long time fans.

The show runners themselves said" they're sticking to the manga" also the actors themselves are big fans of the manga and Oda sensei supports the show. Luffy's actor went to Tokyo and met up with Oda and even Luffy's VA.
I'm an anime watcher / manga reader already but I've never touched one piece because I've always felt overwhelmed but after watching the live action I've actually started the anime!
Some people say that the costumes look too clean like cosplay. But if you think about it and pay attention to the trailer you can see how the clothes wear out and show marks of battle. This show could be really good
I have so many non-anime fans that don't get my passion, and your analogy on how we don't want other people bastardizing food from our culture is perfect. I will use that analagy when expressing why these adpatations matter to me as an anime fan, especially being a One Piece fan myself.

I really need to see Syrup Village Arc. There's already Kuro and Merry. What i need to see is how will they do Jango. And the Zoro scene, Luffy must give his sword and Helmeppo entrance will be epic. Would've changed Kuroobi from Gin against Sanji too.

In all honestly I think 8-10 episodes is perfect for the east blue saga. The 40 episodes of the anime can very easily be paced WAY faster to get through the story in 8-10 episodes

If I'm not mistaken, it's covering the whole of East Blue saga. Also if the East Blue Saga movie can cover the whole of the EB saga in 2h, then it's possible for the production team to cover the whole saga in 8 episodes, which if I'm correct, each episode is 1h long.

I’m also a fan for over 20 years and a female. I was also VERY worried about how they’re going to handle Nami for “modern audiences”. It does look like they’re going to have her fight and do the “walk to Arlong Park”
Which to me fully changes the whole character scene. Nami was always on her own and felt like she didn’t have anyone to turn to. Then Luffy became someone she trusted enough to ask for help. To me that scene shows the Strawhats for the first time working together towards a single goal. And it was to help Nami.
yeah the entire point is she finally DOESNT have to fight this fight for her village after doing it alone for so long.
i hope she doesnt lose all her femininity. part of her character is using her feminine side to get what she wants. shes also never been a big fighter, her hits are strong but zero defenses and only slightly more bravery than usopp.

This is something I am actually hopeful for. They’re changing things, but 1:1 would be boring. Get the characters and the important story moments right, and make it 90-95% match. The fact they’re asking Oda for his approval and taking his advice is helpful. I will also watch it twice, once in English and once in Japanese as the actual anime cast will voice over

Yes it's kind of weird to see that in Live Action, but after all i think after getting used to it, it might be pretty good.

Same here brother. Been following this masterfully wrought tale for half my life (42 now). I'm hopeful for this adaption. Arlong looks 'meh,' however it's pleasing to see they didn't overly CGI the antagonist there. Practical effects are always welcome! Buggy looks and sounds GREAT!
So far it seems they might have the bromance between Sanji and Zoro down. The main cast looks good. I can't wait to see what they have in store for us.
And yes... Luffy is that one character with shoes nearly impossible to fill. I wish the cast well in bringing our favorite story to life.

I'm 50/50 on the sets. Some scenes really look like they were filmed in a studio on a set but others look good.

What I want to know is how extensive is Oda's involvement on this? If this has to be approved by Oda before filming, then I would accept it.
Oda said in a recent message to the fans that the whole series had to be approved by him and only got released once he gave his seal of approval. They even reshot some scenes, because he felt they weren’t good enough. He closely worked together with the production team and his opinion was highly regarded.
The problem with Arlong, afaik, is that he is canonically 8'7. They couldn't physically get anyone with his build, so it all looks... off.

In reality, most episodes of one piece average around 20 minutes. Subtract duplicate scenes from flashbacks, overly long scenes that are stretched out to fit time blocks for the episode and you can save some time here and there. A10 hour production can house 30 episodes comfortably and with Arlong park finishing around the 40ep mark, I think they have it pretty much perfect.
The first trailer also showed the barrel of promises scene and this trailer also showed rogers execution in loguetown
I'm glad that they're likely not going to change the Nami scene, from what you said if they attempted something like that, that would completely undervalue the actual strength of her character. But with all of that said, it looks pretty exciting, the way they're having fun with a lot of the settings. Arlong Park being a legit water theme park, Buggy's base being a proper circus. The stunts and choreography are slightly jank but it looks like its gonna be in a fun way. I'm super happy overall with what we've seen so far

The final scene of Luffy vs Arlong wasn't the gatling, it was him using gum gum battle axe to destroy the building. They didn't spoil the end of the fight.

I don't wanna be an Iñaki Godoy defence squad person, cause what you said is so true, but I really am so glad that it is Iñaki cast as Luffy. As a kid his personality and behaviour was already so similar; Pulling silly pranks, smiling in an ambulance, saying he is elastic and wanting to be a competitive eater. From his acting I really saw his serious side too. He is a more clever version of Luffy imo. He is lacking a bit of the "blank" and "clueless" look... Ya know, when all Luffy can think of is adventure and food, the "Ha???" face, the blank stare, nothing going on in behind those eyes... If Iñaki can pull off the "???" clueless face to balance out the serious side and him being so much more clever then it is perfect.
They nailed it in sense of setting the mood. I'm getting positive vibes overall but they need to give us over the top comedy scenes and drama scenes perfectly. Let's see about that.

Max i know how you feel, I was watching One Piece in Greek Television, under the name, Captain Drake :), i was 11 annd it was my favorite tv program. Unfortunately they ended the show at episode 100. When i became 19, someone in the university told my about that Captain Drake is actually named One Piece and it is still running! I still remember how happy i was that i found this treasure again. Now i am 32, and i can say that One Piece brings the same happiness. it's more than a show. I wish everyone who loves One Piece will be healthy and well to see the end of this journey

Dude, i started with One Piece when i was 9 and now i'm 37. Pausing the video is totally understandable. I paused it like 20 times and even started crying and laughing because i couldn't believe this is getting a western TV Series FOR REAL. This is out of this world and i'm so f-ing glad i'm alive to witness it!
I'm more concern about Ussop than Luffy. We don't see much about him in the trailer and I don't know if he has on him the comical persona he should represent and It's a character that have a lot of screen time in earlies arcs.
Let's say every episode has 12 minutes of relevant plot, ( op, ed, previously on, next episode preview, flashbacks, 40 episodes in 8 hours is absolutely doable.
This gives me STRONG Hook(1991) vibes. I love it.
As for the anime itself, I've never watched it, or read the manga. It's just too damn long 😅

Everyone recognises the characters, the vibe, the world, etc, in the OPLA trailer, right? Because we're all fans. We've all seen the anime, read the manga.
No one recognised the Cowboy Bebop live action, because no could be bothered to watch the anime. They hated on it blindly because that's what you do with live action adaptations based on anime/manga because apparently all we can be, is toxic, right?
The Cowboy Bebop live action failed because of this id.otic live action paranoia.
But watch it, and the anime, to get a feel on Tomorrow Studios. They also did Hanna and Snowpiercer.
You all owe this studio, and the cast&crew of the Cowboy Bebop live action, your apology.
And then get on your knees for the blatant disregard and disrespect of Oda-sensei's decisions.
Nami emotional scene is really important, I think it's the arc that gets most ppl hooked to the manga, so I hope they not only do it decent, but excellent on that.
I do feel like Inaki (luffy's actor) captures Luffy's personality very very well as they both have the same chaotic happy energy, but I do understand your concerns because Luffy's serious moments are very vital for his character and we haven't seen if Inaki can pull those moments off yet.
As a North Carolinian, that sushi story made me chuckle. There's a ton of great sushi places, but man do I hate when I see westernized sushi that is more bastardized than anything else.
I imagine the Arlong story is going to be the main one as it's the biggest arc during the whole East Blue arc which is mostly about Luffy recruiting the first crewmembers. Having him actively pursue Nami also sells him more as a threat and maybe they want to emphasise Nami's reasons for betraying them better than could be managed otherwise in 8 episodes. They had a lot of time in the anime spent on her backstory and her reasons for doing what she did along with Arlong's control over her which they can't cover in 8 live action episodes along with introducing all the other characters plus have other baddies appear. Having Nami's backstory run through all of it with the big payoff at the end makes more sense.
Turning anime into live action is tough without it looking too cheesy and if the cast and crew don't care at all then it can go wrong like with Cowboy Bebop but it seems so far they worked really hard on this and actively want to make it something good.
Fishmen at the Baratie initially seemed wrong but it actually is great for two reasons
They realized Arlong Park is the best part of East Blue and should be their focus.
And it actually makes Arlong the threat he is always talked up to be.
In the manga and anime they always talked about how Arlong was this big menace in the East Blue but really all we see him do is torment One Village and sit on his chair.
I've only recently finished watching the arlong park arc in the anime and i gotta say, don krieg was kinda meh as a villain like i couldn't take him that seriously as the "strongest man in the east blue" or whatever so if his scenes are cut down a bit in favor of arlong showing up and obliterating everyone at the baratie, i wouldn't mind that
I like Godoy, I think he deserves a chance. True enough though, in all likelihood, he might be the only person to ever get a chance to play Luffy in live action.
Nakama, I've been a One Piece anime fan for 23 years and 20 years for the manga now (I have no way of knowing at that time that there is a manga), how crazy is that?! This is a testament that so many of us were and still are being touched by One Piece. Cheers to us!

God I am certain Matt Owens and Oda had to fight for "Help Me" to stay in the show. A empowered woman learning to trust and rely on her male friends? They couldn't even let Prince Eric the experienced sailor steer the ship into Ursula. It doesn't matter if that "Help Me" is the most impactful scene in the entire saga, it doesn't matter that it's beautiful character growth. I am certain they had executives and "sensitivity readers" giving all kinds of opposition but I'm grateful that Matt Owens is such a fan and Oda had so much control. Or this could easily be a Wheel of Time situation.
I heard that the first time Oda saw the take they did, he wasn't happy with it, so they did it again until Oda liked it!

The reason really why oda agreed to make this live action is for those who are not into the op anime or anime in general to be part of the OP family.. we all know that fans who supports oda will already watch this and he already know that.. this live action are really made for non fans hahaha

The show runners themselves said" they're sticking to the manga" also the actors themselves are big fans of the manga and Oda sensei supports the show. Luffy's actor went to Tokyo and met up with Oda and even Luffy's VA.
The actor playing Luffy looks like he embodies him just fine.

In all honestly I think 8-10 episodes is perfect for the east blue saga. The 40 episodes of the anime can very easily be paced WAY faster to get through the story in 8-10 episodes
Also keep in mind that these 8-10 episodes are gonna be like an hour long each

in 1999 one piece aired on national tv at that time many japanese anime were broadcast in indonesia.
As someone from NC, sorry you had to experience that. There are a ton of really good Sushi restaurants in NC that get it right, but just as a pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza, it doesn’t belong in Sushi either.

If I'm not mistaken, it's covering the whole of East Blue saga. Also if the East Blue Saga movie can cover the whole of the EB saga in 2h, then it's possible for the production team to cover the whole saga in 8 episodes, which if I'm correct, each episode is 1h long.
