I showed this to my dad, who's been married for 40 or so years, and he had some interesting insight to the song. "I get that he's talking about divorce, but I think it's more about the loss of friendship" he said. In his mind, the separating yourself from a spouse is less traumatic, so to speak, because after a while, you've pretty much gotten used to your other half's shit. And barring any active attempts to harm the other or themselves, you stop registering the shitness, as it's just part of the commitment you've made to the other person. Some things just don't get better, or even worked on. And that's just life. However, he went on to tell me, the amount of pain you get from this tells you it's not about that. It's the confrontation with the concept that there's something unsalvageable about you and the other person, and there's nothing to do but separate. And this could apply to any relationship, not just a married couple.
So true, my ex ended up with my best friend at the time, ive seen him like 5 times since then and seen her about the same amount and i only miss mine as his friendship, an ex is just that but a lost friend will always be that as well. Your dad seems like a wise man
When I was a young teen, a girl I was in adoration of at summer church camp took me under a tree alone and sang this to me. The moment I got home from that week of camp I ran to steal it from the internet and dive into your worlds. It will forever be one of my favorite memories. I'm 32 now and will always be a huge fan.
listening to john just ramble really makes me miss "i only listen to the mountain goats". he's just such a fascinating dude and even his non-thoughts are interesting to me.
I love this song. It speaks to me and the feelings I had during my divorce. Your music was such a balm for me during the troubles. I'm glad the kids are listening to you.
I once felt sad and confused listening to this as it played on Adult Swim's Moral Orel... then later I shouted along with it at the top of my lungs racing alone down the interstate highway from the city my wife and I Iived in to the town where I grew up... and then later I shouted along with it at the top of my lungs with a view of the stage from the front row of a raised seating area in a tiny split level venue.
These guys (specifically, John Danielle, teach so much in 3 min songs. The Bible, Romulus and Remus and their loyal, protecting she-wolf mother. Pure Brilliance
This seriously has been my all-time favourite song ever since I first heard it. I was never 'divorced' in a legal way. Split with women in all kind of ways. But just the well-brought, easy-to-buy, overwhelmingly honest emotion of the song I definitely can relate to regarding many other parts of life
all the live intros since he started doing this song as "jazz no children" before playing the song proper are SO funny. the times he talks about the sorry couples who ask him to play this at their wedding and he's like "no, thank you, but i'll play it for your divorce attorney"... i will never do his intro jazz no children banter justice know that he mixes up the banter every time and its even better every time. you'll just have to see them live for yourself :-)
Reminds me of when me and my old friend used to sing metal songs to the tune of old swing music, my favourite to do was always "let the bodies hit the floor"
As a teenager with divorced parents this song hits so hard. I recently walked out of my fathers house and I'm never going back and I've definitely been listening much more recently especially since the time my father called me a cunt. This song is so good.
This version is so much better than the other one they have posted where he’s wearing glasses. I wish they would just make this the official live version from this session, because his vocals, and more importantly, the mix is so so so much better. The piano is just way too loud in the other version and it absolutely ruins the feel. Either way this version is wonderful!

This sounds lovely.

What a fascinating thing to say
listening to john just ramble really makes me miss "i only listen to the mountain goats". he's just such a fascinating dude and even his non-thoughts are interesting to me.
Make sure to listen to all the other live stuff, the banter is some of the best parts of the shows. Learned so much about so many songs.
Same, so glad they added a bit of commentary to the Spotify release of JLS
You could also check out his audiobooks - he narrates them
He does it in concerts and it adds to the whole experience. 50/10.
I like how I listen to this and my ears go "Yeah this is No Children." And then you say "1 2 3 and" and my brain goes "Oh oh no THIS is No Children"
Oh no I was ready for the whole song as jazz!
I think the instrumental is much more jazzy, but I agree, I thought it was gonna be like the intro, which would have been even wilder.
++
So glad Moral Orel introduced me to the mountain goats
same
Amen brotha
same same
Absolutely
Thank God for Jazz No Children

All these years later “ You’re The Worst” brought me here and I’m glad it did!

The tone on that bass is beautiful.

0:51 glad he's finally settled on a pronunciation

I love seeing how much fun John is having here!

Thank the gods for this full release of Jazz No Children
Jon Wurster is king of the Ghost Note
Fuck yeah man. Guy is top notch.
I've been waiting for this for ages!
Yesss!!!!
How can I not love this?
Thank you all so much.
Your beard looks like an actual mountain goat beard. Digging it.
It's almost weird that he gives a similar energy to Serj Tankain performing
It's the goatee/madness in his eyes.
Thank god for the goats
still wondering why this video was filmed so dark and grey lol. but fun version of the intro for sure. someday we'll get the whole jazzy version!
I mean, is it not perfectly fitting for this song?
OH YEAH! JAZZ NO CHILDREN BABEY!!
JAZZ NO CHILDREN
Pure catharsis
Rad, you guys. Glad youtube recommended this.
I'm just going to say it this is the better version
They gave up tryin to save me...finally. It's been dark a long time. Breathe...

love this
As with most live Mountain Goats clips I come across, half the video is him just talking and giving context loll
No, I'm not the roadie, I'm the mountain goats!
FINALLY
It's Boz Scaggs's "No Children"!
Fuck yeah love to see the boys doing a family favorite 🤩 😍
Pretty much all of the lake Jordan session recordings are "Jazz" versions, it's just kinda their sound now lol
Or when you're in a relationship that is untenable and you're trying to choose between kids and feelings. We used to love each other.... sigh.
I hear Dancing in the Moonlight in the intro.
WOOO

Never thought I would hear a Jeff Beck mention here, cool

I guess we knew we were destined for failure when we made this one of our songs. Miss you. We'll meet again in Hell.
Indie Serj Tankian
"Woah woah! I got my divorce!"
someone get that mad a proper capo!
why does John Darnielle only hire sexy longhaired musicians?
FFS John, tune that thing!
It’s funny this was my divorce song/ album
clickbait, not jazzy at all!
