In 2003, Complex interviewed Mos Def and David Bowie. Bowie said this line was one of the most beautiful he ever heard in a song. Needless to say, Bowie knew a thing or two about song writing...
“This shiny apple is bruised but sweet, and if you choose to eat, you could lose your teeth.” In a song full of highly skilled poetry this one line outshines the rest. The apple is New York City, the “Big Apple”. The profit motive underlying city life is enticing (shiny, sweet) but whether you pursue via Wall Street (Manhattan) or Main Street (Brooklyn) you have to be a “gangster of Gotham” to succeed (the game is bruised, ie unhealthy for you), and it’s high stakes (lose your teeth). Eat the forbidden fruit (the shiny apple) and die like Adam and Eve who committed the original sin of greed. Of course the actual original sin in Gen 3 was wanting to become like gods. But Mos can be forgiven for a little artistic license.
So much on my mind, I just can't recline Blastin' holes in the night 'til she bled sunshine Breathe in - inhale vapors from bright stars that shine Breathe out - weed smoke retrace the skyline

+j-imperial: That's what kills me about RADIO EDITS...like it would kill the radio programmers to play those extra 20-30 seconds. Not to mention, the radio never gave a fuck about this song, especially when they're too busy shoving P-Diddy and Masta P down our throats, so why bother making this a radio edit at all?
The beat on this track is honestly top 3 beats of all time. Not only does it sound amazing, but it fits in with the narrative. The voicing of the 2 guitar chords sound with they're breathing in and out, which plays into the concept of the song about a living, breathing city. Pure perfection.
I don't understand why people feel the need to hate on drake all the time. Some of commons newer stuff don't really sound like "hip hop". Things change with time. Electric circus and universal mind control are some of the most experimental things you'll hear.

From 98 to today. I had Black*Star on CD from early on. Think I got it at Target, IIRC. Definition and Re:definition were on heavy rotation on 102 Jamz down here in North Carolina. THIS was never hip hop. This was underground. THIS isn't a representation of the late 90s. Back that ass up, Bitch Please, Where My Dogs At. Fred Durst, Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, ICP, and Silk The Shocker ALL had "hits" in the 90s. That was much more representative of the time than Black Star. Hence the album sales.
@I always spoil your fun All of whom you named had the machine behind them, if you didn’t fit the commercial niche for what the occult had an esoteric agenda, then underground you go. This joint is so good that it pushes the boundaries.
@@IWannaUnaliveMyself I disagree with this. The 90s had different things going on. While you're right there was a lot of mainstream junk coming out of hip hop, there was a whole scene of neo-soul, afrocentric conscious rap, a lot of white college kids were down with that scene too. It was a lifestyle that was well known and close to the mainstream while simultaneously being "underground". That scene completely disappeared like it never happened cuz the generations that came after threw it all away.
I think it goes with the area, east coast sound was most heared back at that time, while Southside sound was kind of unknow, now goes the other way around. I know i live in europe, nobody here know about 36mafia until late 20s when T.I. and lil wayne, etc became popular, trends... you still got mozzy for ex nowdays and a lot going Underground

“For trees to grow in Brooklyn seeds need to be planted.. I’m asking if y’all feel me and the crowd left me stranded”
"My blood pressure boiled and rose, these NY niggas acting spoiled at shows, to the winners, the spoils go" Birmingham AL, checking In!!!
Commons verse is really underrated makes me shed a tear every time.
What makes you think his verse is underrated? All three of them shined.
@@tutuletters6664 I’ve seen videos glorifying Mos defs verse all over social media but I’ve never heard no one talk about Commons. That’s why.
@@neneolivares6743 That's because Mos had the best verse, and he deserves that. Doesn't mean that Com's verse is a sleeper or anything. It's just like on the Tribe song, What's The Scenario. Busta had the best verse, though everyone on the song had great verses.
I always nod no but it's true
Chicago finests
I remember getting this CD with money I made from one of my first jobs. I listened in awe, mesmerized by the pictures it painted.
"Hey don't da bass ride out like an ancient mating call ?" - Mos Def 🎉❤
When hip hop was ORGANIC
Word
This is so BULK UP. MAJOR PROPS to Mos, Def, Talib Quali, and Common for this. This song is MUCH better than Sex. FACTS!😄
Now it's inorganic coz of mumble rapper🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
this is lyrically the strongest rap song I’ve ever heard
EDIT: Mural by Lupe Fiasco takes number 1 spot actually
Listen to the Album Liquid Swords by GZA. That said, Mos Def's verse here is untouchable.
Modern rappers pen game just doesnt even come close..... Mos Defs first verse is a fucking masterpiece
Are you a youngster who just realised this stuff exists?
@@KomenCents I found this song on Hip Hop Evolution (amazing series on netflix) and I've been listening to these artists nonstop for weeks. I'm ashamed to say a year ago I didn't know this song existed. Truly amazing, lyrically, musically, it's a masterpiece.
@@nikkil_99 Glad to have ya buddy
What a masterpiece this track is.
Listen, the city is breathing 🙏🏽
This was the very first mp3 I downloaded off of Napster. Believe that.
Props, OG!
That's what's up!
Real Hip Hop.
One of my top albums of all times. They got so slept on at the time because of all the Bling Bling Rap going on...but real heads knew.
This timeless track still kills all day 24/7❤
“Blasting holes in the night ‘til she bled sunshine.”
In 2003, Complex interviewed Mos Def and David Bowie. Bowie said this line was one of the most beautiful he ever heard in a song. Needless to say, Bowie knew a thing or two about song writing...
LeBrigand Thats dope!
@@lebrigand4115it's through his ear and understanding of songwriting we got Luther Vandross, everyone overlooked Luther till David Bowie came through
“This shiny apple is bruised but sweet, and if you choose to eat, you could lose your teeth.”
In a song full of highly skilled poetry this one line outshines the rest.
Commons first line gives it competition though… but I feel you… he’s talking about gentrification

This keeps me alive. Thank you BlackStar

So much on my mind, I just can't recline
Blastin' holes in the night 'til she bled sunshine
Breathe in - inhale vapors from bright stars that shine
Breathe out - weed smoke retrace the skyline
There's a paradox we call reality
So keepin it real will make you a casualty
Of abnormal normality
Love that part
"Of reality I touch, but for me it's hard to keep" - COMMON

🔥🔥🔥🔥
This song brings tears to my eyes, makes me think how good hip-hop used to be.
And will be again.
Me too my friend
So funny, I was just thinking the same thing. Tears to my eyes as well.
it's still good, you just gotta listen to the right people
Same
Common came through repping the Chi the right way with the fur and lyrics NY will always respect you 💪🏽🔥
Purity....this is a "young/hungry" God MC Talib Kweli....with the man that I've always said that he is the "literal" face of "Real Hip-Hop" 🎤🎷🪘🥁🎻🎺🎸🎉 Mighty Mos Def....and the greatest/most poetic, Brotha Common, showing the Aliens, from the depths of space, what "Conscious Rap/Real Hip-Hop" truly is = WE HAVE TO SHOW THEM ( the Aliens 👽🤙💯 ) THIS VIDEO FIRST....BEST RAP VIDEO/SONG EVER = Gone....
I swear Kweli and Mr. Bey were like "who can drop more truth in a verse?" lmaoooo i swear this is just TOO MUCH/GOOD
yeeah
+Gabriel Mercado I agree....
kinda fucked up they cut talibs verse 8 bars less. smh. my favorite part was cut. oh well still a classic.
Gabriel Mercado and Common Didn’t?
The beat on this track is honestly top 3 beats of all time. Not only does it sound amazing, but it fits in with the narrative. The voicing of the 2 guitar chords sound with they're breathing in and out, which plays into the concept of the song about a living, breathing city. Pure perfection.
Amazing production no doubt. It has a very melancholy and vintage feel to it.
Hi-Tek produced it
Fucken editeddddd .. junkkkk
Well said, it's hard to put words on the real, like this #speachless
Less is more, this beat is a masterpiece
You see drake this is a rap song. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Fact
This is hip hop,
which Drake is not..
Real.😂😅
😂
I don't understand why people feel the need to hate on drake all the time. Some of commons newer stuff don't really sound like "hip hop". Things change with time. Electric circus and universal mind control are some of the most experimental things you'll hear.
YES we all here in 2024
Stay alive, you play or die, no options
No batman and robin
Can't tell between the cops& the robbers
They both partners they all heartless with no conscience , back streets stay darkened where unbelievers' hearts stay hardened
My eagle talons stay sharpened
Channicia Parrish these points have never been sharper than they are now. Stay awake to the ways of the world.
Mos def was mos definitely ahead of his time this right here depicts on whats going on today everyday. Whos still jammin to this in 2020?!
From 98 to today. I had Black*Star on CD from early on. Think I got it at Target, IIRC. Definition and Re:definition were on heavy rotation on 102 Jamz down here in North Carolina. My favorite track was the posse cut near the end of the album, but I didn't sleep on Respiration either, this track is timeless!

2021…….
im here in 2024 for sure
“Classic”
YEAH !
I cannot believe that this only has 2 million views. This is one of the best hip-hop songs ever made...
This use to be number 1 on RAP CITY on BET! I taped it on VHS the day it became number 1 too!!!!
mrpostman730 you should upload man... let me know if you do
its not a mainstream song
If u don't use the word "Pu$$y","A$$","Fcuk" or "B!tch" more than 10 times u do not Qualify for advertisement in the Hip Hop catalogues.
Only the True Hip Hop Listeners will search for this kind of music.
mrpostman730 yeah i remember. it was #1 on Rap City for 7 or 8 wks (maybe longer). Was surprising cuz this was the time when dirty south music (Master P, JT Money) was popular. Fundamental Hip Hop lived
It's insane how far modern hip hop has moved away from this, in such a short period of time.
@I always spoil your fun
All of whom you named had the machine behind them, if you didn’t fit the commercial niche for what the occult had an esoteric agenda, then underground you go. This joint is so good that it pushes the boundaries.
@@chancregister2714 its cute you think blackstar weren't part of "the machine"
I’m 41 years young , this my era young bucks
Ol “you don’t know nun bout this young blood.” head ass 💀😭🤣 but nah tho this so refreshing!!!
My brother showed me this when I was 10 and I had no clue what it was. 13 years later and this is a banger to me

Even if it went over their head at the time, I bet they still listen to it now 👊
Beautiful to know there are black boys were once extremely conscious of what they produced and delivered in Hip-Hop. No girls shaking their asses or flashy cars just pure lyricists.
Now morality check, black MEN not boys
Mos is one of the most underrated rappers ever...
All 3 are better than anyone in the 2020s
Underappreciated too
The three wise men of hip hop
Top 5 track of all time
Best song on the album. But more importantly. ONE OF THE BEST TRACK EVER WRITTEN.
Absolutely insane hook, so creative. Rappers don't use this level of brain power anymore.
