I found a few yards of a neat indoor/outdoor fabric at a thrift shop for cheap. My bench cushion that needed a new life so your tutorial is excellent and easy to follow and not complicated. Thanks!
I loved it! Your voice and personality are so calm and warm... it made me feel I could do this! Thanks for sharing. I will be trying this for my patio cushions.
Thank you so much for your kind compliment; I really appreciate that. I hope you tried this idea for covering your cushions. I use this method over and over for our front and back porch. Thanks again!
I was looking for a quick and easy idea to make covers for my old tired cushions and I ran across your video. I will be going to Joann fabrics in the morning! Thanks!
Thank you so much! I made new covers for my outdoor porch swing- 3 cushions in all. It took about 5 hours start to finish for all of them- I did have to make the top curved though. Thanks so much for the fabulous idea!!! You made a difficult project so simple!
Thank you so much for telling us that our video was helpful to you. I bet you did a fantastic job on your cushions. I am impressed that you worked with a curved top. Wow! Thank you so much for your kind comments. Really makes my day....Mary
Thanks so much--very clever of you--I was telling my husband how we would have to wait until the end of the season to buy new cushions on sale--now, all I have to do is buy fabric and so a little sewing. Thanks so much for this very clever and inexpensive idea.
Oh so glad our video gave you a great idea for your cushions. Look for inexpensive fabric and you'll really come out ahead. Thanks for your kind words, Berthenia.
Thanks so much for the easy tutorial, it's so easy to follow! We just got a mismatched outdoor set with some unappealing pillows. Can't wait to spruce them up!
MisssMaddie I hope you enjoy using the tutorial and it's wonderful of you to watch our video. Thank you very much. Have fun covering your mismatched outdoor set.
How wonderful to hear, Val. If you'd like, we'd love to see a picture or two of your cushions. And it would be super fun to share them on our site. Just let me know if you'd enjoy sharing. Thanks for your kind comments and so glad you found a sale!
Thanks Mary - I just got some new outdoor fabric from JoAnn's at 70% off (wow!) and have been thinking of the easiest way to make my new covers. Your video was just what I needed - thank you so much! Lori Campbell
I had told my family I could just make like a giant pillow case to cover all cushions and they said it wouldn’t work so I haven’t done anything well now I am. Love the look and easy Peasy! Thanks
Thank you sweet Lady! My husband bought me a sewing machine for my bday and well, I don't know how to sew! This will be my first project. Heeheeheee! Edit: surely I can sew a big pillow case!😬😉
Thank you for this great idea. It made me sick to spend $45 for one cushion when I need six of them for my patio set. If I did that, I would end up spending more money than buying a new set! I wanted mine easy to take on & off, so I didn't want to stitch it closed. It would have been a pain to do that many zippers, so I finished the raw edges all around & added velcro. Thank you so much for such a great idea!
I have the same style cushions and was wandering how I was gonna cover then also they are more of a lounge chair length. I located indoor outdoor table cloth at dollar store but will have to measure to be sure of how much I need. But this technique is perfect. My mother always said I could see a pillow case. Fish I do miss her. Thank you so much for this video.
I love the idea, too. Choosing the print of the cover is so fun too. I like to change our cushion covers for the season too. Thanks for your comment and watching our video.
Great video and instructions. Rather than stitching the top closed I think it would be a good idea to use velcro or a zipper; that way you can remove the cover and wash it.
I agree with you. For future cushions we didn't sew the top closed and simply pinned it shut and that does make laundering easy. But for this cushion, which we did sew shut, it was easy to remove the stitches when we wanted to wash it. Thank you!
+donna doyle So glad you found this helpful and thank you for your comment. Maybe you can cover your patio cushions and enjoy a fresh new look this spring and summer. Have fun with it. ~Mary~
I've done this for throw pillows so on Christmas I have that holiday feel didn't think about doing cushions but I like the trick how you used the ties thanks
While outdoor fabric is always a good choice, we often times just get "duck" fabric which is heavier than regular cotton. it has more durability. Thank you for watching our video.
No, indoor outdoor material is not generally speaking waterproof, Destiny. The main difference (I think) is that outdoor fabric stands up better to fading because the color is ingrained in the fabric better. Sometimes (often) I use indoor fabric for the porch as it's usually more affordable. We change our porch decor often so the fading doesn't get out of hand. Our porch is covered so our cushions do not get wet very often. If they do, I just let them air dry and all is ok.
This is a lovely and easy project. But usually the cost of outdoor fabric is rather expensive :-( Sometimes if you wait till season's end, you can purchase new ready made cushions for the same price as sewing covers. However I still like the idea of custom made covers. Really neat project and I've done this myself too. Fun project to do. :-) Loved your video.
Thank you so much. For this project I got outdoor fabric that was on sale, but since then I've not worried about using outdoor fabric and have just used regular fabric. It lasts a season (without too much fading) and then I make new ones for the next season. Sometimes I find fabric for a couple dollars a yard. Thanks so much for watching our video.
Hi Jenine! Thanks for watching our video about covering outdoor cushions. You would have to allow a bit of extra fabric to compensate for the thickness of your cushions (meaning the sides). This method would probably still work though. I would wrap the fabric around the cushions to get a guesstimate of how much it will take. I hope that helps you.
Could you let me know what fabric works best outdoors when 'not' using fabric sold for outdoors? My deck is covered so the only problem I have is with mildew...thanks!
Thank you for watching our video, Mary. I like to get "duck" fabric because it has some weight to it, more than just cotton, per se. We have problems with mildew too as we live in Tennessee where it's so humid in the summer. There may be a spray you can put on your fabric to protect it - perhaps Scotchguard. I haven't tried it on our outdoor cushions. Otherwise, you can wash the cushion covers in a light bleach solution, but you have to be careful about it fading your colors. I know, it's not an easy problem to solve in my experience. When I make cushion covers, I only count on them to last 1 season in my area.
I'm thinking of doing this with old patio cushions. Dimensions are 23 x 23 x 5. I'm concerned about that 5 inch thickness. Will adding just the extra 3 inches to both the length and width of each section be enough fabric? Thanks! I'm already looking for fabric!
Hi Lynn, Thank you for watching our video. It would work nicely with old patio cushions. What I would do (and this is not scientific or anything) is just wrap the fabric around your patio cushion and mark with a pin where the two sides meet. Then add an extra inch or so for the seam allowance. Or make it a little larger than you think, try it on and adjust it accordingly. That way you will be sure it fits nicely. I hope that helps and have fun with your project! ~Mary and Dave~
Hi Jamie, I purchased their "outdoor material" which you can usually find in their store near the upholstery fabrics (but just ask a clerk to assist). If your fabric is wide enough to cover both the front and the back plus the seam allowance, than purchase enough to cover the length of your cushion plus several inches more to fold it down in the back and safety pin it. I hope that is helpful! Thank you.
Debbie Emerson Thanks for watching our video. Yes, I think it was 54" fabric, but I don't think that would be necessary if your cushions work with 44-45" fabric. Thank you for watching our video!
I really like how you did these cushions but mine are very thick and bulky. I'm not sure if I can get the same look with them.
Sorry I made a typo on your name, Jennie.

Thank you for watching our video, Mary. I like to get "duck" fabric because it has some weight to it, more than just cotton, per se. I know, it's not an easy problem to solve in my experience. When I make cushion covers, I only count on them to last 1 season in my area.

What type of outdoor mateiral did you buy from Joann's?
Hi Jamie,
I purchased their "outdoor material" which you can usually find in their store near the upholstery fabrics (but just ask a clerk to assist). However, with that being said, I don't feel it is imperative that you get that type of fabric (as it usually costs more than indoor fabric).
The advantage of outdoor fabric from what I understand is that it is more fade resistant than regular fabrics because the ink penetrates throughout the entire of the fabric. But another fabric that I often use is drop cloths (like painters use). They are a whitish material and when washed become quite soft. And they do not fade in the sun - and if they do - it's not noticeable. You can get painters drop cloths just about anywhere that paint is sold - like a home dept, lowes or menards. I hope this helps you! Thank you for watching our video.
PS: I often just choose a pretty cotton material and I plan on using it for one season. Then if it fades, I don't mind. If it doesn't fade then that is even better. Depends on your budget and how long you hope to use the cushion covers.
Hi, Mary. Do you need to sew the middle seam that was in the old cushion for the new cushion to fit properly>
I didn't sew the middle seam and it seems to work just fine. If you like a perfectly tight more custom fit, then you may want to. Try it without first to see what you think. We like ours without the extra middle seam. Thanks for asking!
kids video
This was great I need to recover my cushions outside. How much material did you buy?
Hi Alanda,
Thanks for watching our video. It depends upon the size of your cushions and the width of the fabric that you want to use. If your fabric is wide enough to cover both the front and the back plus the seam allowance, than purchase enough to cover the length of your cushion plus several inches more to fold it down in the back and safety pin it. I hope that is helpful! Thank you.
very nice... I want to do this... did you use 54 inch wide fabric?
Debbie Emerson Thanks for watching our video. Yes, I think it was 54" fabric, but I don't think that would be necessary if your cushions work with 44-45" fabric. Since making these cushions, I have also discovered more ways. One is to simply wrap your cushions with fabric like you would with a gift and then pin them in the back. So very easy. But not matter what, it's fun making new cushions for your porch. I have made several cushions using the technique in our video and I love this way. Thanks....Mary
thanks lot good idea
+malee sandaseeli ekanayake Ekanayake You are welcome. Glad you enjoyed our ideas for covering cushions.
What seam allowance did you use
About a 1/2 inch or a little more!
Can we use the same technique for a box cushion . I don't have professional sewing skills
You could use the same technique however you'd need to add a little extra width to allow for the sides of the box cushions. And also, it wouldn't fit in a "custom way" if that's important to you. If it were me, I would give it a try if I had box cushions as I'm not overly fussy about things like that. I think it would be fine.
How many yards is required per chair?
depends on size of cushion; measure length of cushion and this is what you will need to buy
I will be more than happy to share. Let me know how
Val, do you use Facebook? If so you can go to our Facebook page ( facebook.com/frontporchideas ) and send me a message there. You can attach pictures to your message. I am excited to see. Thank you, Val!
So you cant take them off to wash them ? O k I will make it into a pillow case top x
Well, yes you can, Maria. After doing the cushions this way I've come up with more variations. And one of those variations is to close the top in a more temporary way (with safety pins on the back, for example). That way they can be taken off and washed. I do that all the time and it works out fantastic! Thanks much for watching.
