The biggest problem with gaming channels on TH-cam is that so many of them don't take it seriously, but still expect to somehow make it a job one day. As someone that's been doing gaming content for 12 years, one thing that wasn't mentioned was Personality. Doesn't matter what strategy you pick, if you have a personality that doesn't keep people coming back, you won't grow very quickly.

I think everyone needs to understand how important it is to upload, not like a madman, but to upload videos. Not only does it give your channel content for your potential audience to watch, but it also helps you learn. TH-cam/content creation is a process, trust the process and you will be successful.

Yeah I just started as a gaming channel and this video has helped me realize a couple things. Right now I was feeling really discouraged because my videos are actually garbage and not what I want them to be. Then I see all the other TH-camrs be successful and make GOOD content. Even after this I told myself that they have also been doing this a lot longer than I have. I may not have the best equipment or any knowledge on editing, scriptwriting, etc. I told myself I will get better, and I'll eventually get the equipment I need to make the content I want to make. I just had to come to terms that it will take time. I just need become better and constantly strive for improvement!
I've come to realise that self expectation can be a really negative thing. Obviously having goals is important but when you expect yourself to achieve those goals within a constrained period of time, it can be really soul destroying when you fail to meet them. I struggle with this too, so I can relate to what you've said. I'm currently training myself to react better to my own mistakes which will in turn allow me to learn from said mistakes & improve as a content creator & as a person.

Yeah it seems scary in my opinion don’t approach it from a “this will work and become a job” standpoint I feel like people wanna do TH-cam as a job cause they think it’s easy and that’s not true making good content isn’t easy even the content I do is hard and it’s like basically memey. But you should do it for fun. You should do it cause you like editing or the games you play
@@xartfulx9735 I gotta agree with you. Even if you follow every piece of advice given by VidIQ & other creators, there's no guarantee you'll make it big on TH-cam. So you might as well have fun with it & if find you're not having fun then maybe take a little break to reassess.

Whoever is reading DONT give up on your channel. Think about all the hard work that you have already put in. Every youtuber was once in your spot they just kept going. Stay consistent and you will reach your goals. consistent uploads and improvement and some determination is all you need!

I’ve been wanting to be a TH-camr/gamer since I was a kid and I never knew how to start but now I’m really trying to get there and I want to commit to it. I love gaming and I really want to get there. I did my first video and I’m still a bit like nervous and kinda shy but ik if I keep going I can shine more light bc all I want to do is enjoy playing games, having an audience, and making my audiences happy while watching me. Making their day🥺bc that’s what gaming always do for me so I want to do the same for others.
I love these kind of videos because its definitely a confidence boost for people who wanna start but a lot of these video forget at least 1 key thing (at least in my opinion), when doing a gaming TH-cam channel or just a TH-cam channel in general is that you should just have fun with it. don't get me wrong all these tips are great for understanding what can help with a channel but I feel that starting a TH-cam channel shouldn't be this complex to get started, if your having fun playing games and editing them for TH-cam then continue to do that and try and improve on yourself with editing each video, name a video what you wanna name it don't stress about key words or trying your absolute hardest to push out video every day or 2 because all these other channels are doing it, you should just have fun and enjoy the content you make because as you upload content and improve on your abililty to edit and talk in video's you'll also wanna improve in other areas of your channel which is where you'd wanna start looking at tips to help grow your channel and look into the specifics of what can help your channel grow when you've became a lot more comfortable uploading, editing, talking, etc. and wanna really take TH-cam seriously.

My best friend started a channel about a month ago and its an extremely niche gaming channel. It's on a private server to an old game, and he's also just talking in depth on one specific build in the private server. so EXTREMELY niched down, but his first video did 2.8k views and every video after that has done 1k+ views! He's 7 videos in and 14k views, which I feel is doing pretty good! Up 190 subs in 1 month!! IT IS POSSIBLE!!

2 months later, he's averaging 3k+ views per video and just hit 550 subs! Posting 1 video per week on average! Don't give up! :)

thank you, its nice to here everything I've been doing lately is the correct way to do things. ive went from just hitting record and edit later to actually directing myself a little and planning out each and every type of video. i usually tend to be a more adult humor gaming channel but ive learned to give my self a line not to cross for certain types of videos like tutorials then kinda go all out on the more series based and multiplayer stuff. i stick within my sub niche which are two games that are extremely similar because its the games my community play. if see they are playing a new game on discord I ask about it and sometimes I do poles on which new games they would like to see. the lets play concept is definitely dead, unless you have a special theme to it or twist. also I don't like to bombard my community with a lot of shorts and community posts. i find them mostly annoying myself when I'm going through the recent videos I'm subscribed to I've actually unsubscribed from people because of the spam of notifications and filling up my new videos feed. ive asked others in my community for their thoughts on it and they agree. a short here and there and post or poll once a week is fine but blowing up the subscription feed is annoying and gets old fast. when it comes to making and scheduling content I think about how I consume it. i don't really like to see 2 or more videos from the same person a day because I have a limited view time and don't like to choose. its better when they only put out videos 4 or 5 days a week so I can keep up with them equally. so I try for 3 to 5 videos a week. when I have time or I remember a funny part of a video ill make a short and upload it at random. and do posts on updates to the channel and when ill be doing streams and post some polls. but what you said about making games for your audience and not so much just any new game is spot on. if you go out of your game niche it just confuses the algorithm and your viewers. thank yall for these videos they really help. I'm definitely gonna work on the content ecosystem with a more set schedule and more posts. also the thing with making videos for all people who play that game really stuck out to me because I started that strategy recently and It really helps. i do tutorials to get new viewers and series based stuff along with multiplayer to keep them. and my more series based stuff has started to actually get me more viewers as a side effect.
The content ecosystem is a really good strategy because a few years ago, the long-forn videos were TH-cam, shorts were TikTok, live streams were Twitch and the community tab were Twitter and/or Instagram, and it's really good to have all that in one place.

But TH-cam still favors long form more than tiktok and shorts on tiktok get viral alot easier.
Thanks for all the tips you have shared over the years. Your tips and information made my channel grow a lot even though my channel never got "big". I had very small niche but I still found my small but very loyal audience since no one really had the type of videos I was making. I have always kept making TH-cam videos as a nice hobby but now since I have other plans for my life I decided to quit it. As I get older I can always go back and check the videos I have done and how much positivity it gave to me and my audience.
Good vid. Thanks for sharing the tips. I personally don't agree about let's plays having come to an end, and not really even sure about focusing on one game only. It think it all really depends. I suppose your larger points still make sense since if you were to have any success with variety and let's plays you'd still need to be a good storyteller, especially when it comes to editing the videos, and would need to be able to bring something unique to the table. I'm just saying it can be something else than the current trending things too, and it can also largely depend on personality and how entertaining or insightful the person is. Furthermore, I'd actually argue there is a counter wave starting where content that is less in your face, less edited, and more relaxed is actually making a comeback. People seem tired of the constant bombardment to their senses and are looking for more chill content as well. Perhaps I'm wrong, and regardless I reckon it's easier to grow if you try and hit the trends, but I'm just saying there is still demand for other things too.

I think the point is when the content stands out in the table, of course, it will gain attention.
And putting insightful information, complementary or such in the clip might be the way. But what about when the table's already fulled with those clips, the plain & chill one may stands instead. LOL.
Started my gaming channel back in July and I got monetized today and have 2300 subs. There's definitely still space to start a gaming channel. 🥰 I only play one game and generally target towards a specific segment of the audience for that game. (Mostly intermediate advanced modded players) Being as specialized as possible has helped me grow well and I've started to branch out a bit to the broader player base (beginners and unmodded players) too and it's doing well.
I definitely had some HUGE success being the first person to cover a brand new dlc that was coming and being the ONLY person to cover a mod that was super popular. All of these tips absolutely work.

I've had a few gaming channels that are under 40 subs come to me wanting to know how to grow. I look at what theyve made and see that they are all over the place with their content. I tell them to focus on one niche for a while to grow. Half of these people don't like to stay to one niche for a while.
yep ive seen this too. people wanting help with how to do a gaming channel but just don't want to put in the work and just put something random out each time and expect it to do good. tried showing people how to make titles and use tags and tried to help add some production value to their videos but they just wanna hit record and upload whatever. cant help them if they don't want to learn I guess. tried to explain simple stuff like record at 30 fps because youtube only process at 30 but they get mad when they record at 130 and there videos are all blocky lol Im a very small channel so i don't have much i can say but some people just don't want to learn the basics lol
Whether you're doing something cool, something soothing, something epic, even something simple as heck, gaming content is hard to make, especially with the rise of several games, mobile and PC and controller alike. I started a TH-cam hiatus a few months ago because I had life things that meant I couldn't make videos for a while, but I also realised that trying to make variety content when just starting out just doesn't work, so over this whole break I've been trying to figure out what sort of content to focus on. I was sure I didn't want to do gaming because it's such a saturated market, but right when I was starting to want to make videos again, this video came along. I'm now considering gaming again. It's what I've always wanted to do, the only reason I ruled it out is because I thought it was impossible to stand out among the hundreds of thousands of gaming channels. But if it's still a viable way to start out (I'm basically soft rebooting my channel after all), then I'm putting gaming back on the table.

Recently I've been racking my brain to figure out, "what hasn't been done before in Crystal PvP?" Even though I started over a year ago, I definitely need to try dedicate more time to my channel, so it's basically like a restart so this is really helpful!
I definitely am looking forward to growing my channel to push success and hopefully start businesses as I currently work as a manager for a fast food restaurant. My dream is cinematography and TH-cam is the start to this. Not to mention hopefully one day being able to buy my parents a home and support them as they did for me when I grew up.

Tbh its interesting points for every channel. Story telling is by far the secret to good channels and videos. It's the basic of any entertainment. Books, films, conversations and theatre. It's all about the story.
Don’t forget, personality is huge! I struggle with this a bit and am working on it but don’t be afraid to break out of your shell and keep your viewers entertained!
I started my channel about 3 months ago, I just do it for fun. Playing games I am passionate about and show my love for the games I play through my videos. It helped me with my anxiety too!
First time I hear Dan say focus on 1 type of audience rather then focus on 1 game only. That is EXACTLY what I am doing by going for the survival games audience trying to deliver news, tips and other content for that niche. Despite some games’ tips bringing in more audience then others this approach seems to be working as opposed to general variety lets play that is my main channel (Grunfworks).
So I guess what I am trying to say here Dan, I hear you, and as far as I am concerned, you are spot on with this one.
I do lets plays and tips on the same channel. but i do find that my tips on survival games get way more regular view than the lets play as a whole. but definitely focusing on just survival games and gaining that type of audience, is the way to go, like yo said!

Niche down, Have intentions with each video, and prioritize getting better at editing and understand what the community wants and critically watch those who are making it work. Great thumbnails, great content then put yourself in front of the algorithm. If you're genuine and trying, people will notice.

I started a gaming channel in November and as of today this channel has literally 13K views with 45 videos and only 145 subscribers. Within my niche/game, there are tons of people who are commonly searching for the best weapon or best build. Since the most popular TH-cam channels don't really focus on that topic, I took advantage of that knowledge and idea I have and made it valuable to those who want to know which weapons are good or what build to have. I also do livestreams of the actual story of the game and those rack in subscribers/views since there are tons of new players coming to the game and need assistance of playing through that whole game. So far I been super passionate about this channel and what I have been doing lately. It's real fun and analyzing the analytics help me to learn what to improve on in the next video and what my audience enjoys watching more.

I’ve been doing gaming-related content for around 5 years and experimented with a niche related to games (their soundtracks) and found that this is wildly popular and can be continually improved on. My viewership has skyrocketed in the last two months and now I’m ready to try new ideas too, on top of building on my old ones!

few tips, the name is too generic, the profile picture is ugly and WAY TOO generic and your thumbnails need more effort to them. the concepts behind them are good, they just need to be worked on more.
Private the old videos don’t delete them. You keep the amount of views and watch hours. Plus if your ever big you can look back at your old videos.

Wow!! that was close to the best video (if not the best) that I have watched on this subject, many thanks. I'm guilty of the lack of focus issue as I started as a study project to learn all I could for my son's benefit but I've become a little addicted to it myself now, so I have used multiple games most of which I do enjoy playing but I have been trying to gain more focus after "testing the waters".
My goals are to see more organic growth on my gaming channel. I started using Google Ads a while ago then stopped and saw almost zero traction. Using Google Ads again and getting views and subs (slowly) but retention and engagement remain very low.
Going to be following more vidIQ advice this year and hopefully I can get more of an audience this year without having to pay Google for it.

Thank you for this video, I recently moved specifically to just TH-cam over Twitch and I've been trying to find my Rhythm and not knowing if I should focus on just Full form vids, Shorts or Live. But hearing that it's better to do a combination of all three and really gave me some new ideas for future videos as well.
I think I’m doing pretty well with my editing and thumbnails for a complete noobie who just started a gaming channel.. that’s mainly cause I’ve been watching TH-cam since it came out.. and I’ve learned and gained so much knowledge of this platform even for a viewer which helps a lot, but still.. it is not easy.. and there is so much from for improvement, I’m learning as I go here.. I feel like If I make every single video.. the best video ever ! There’s no way I can fail, I can feel my gut my instincts that my channel can work and be successful.. I just gotta put in the time and effort, 5-6 hours editing a video only for 50 views is rough man .. but I hope one day .. there’s gonna be that one video .. that one game that’s gonna pop off my channel.. almost happens to every let’s player… I wonder what my game is..

This is a really good video. I’ve been struggling with the fact that I’ve seen huge growth from shorts that isn’t translating to long form views. I have nearly 2k subs but only 200 of the 4,000 watch hours towards monetisation.
Time to re-focus my content in 2023 and start grinding for that 4k watch hours!

dang im opposite ive only got 686 subscribers but over 9000 watch hours and about 200 videos I get around 24 hundred views every 48 hours and around 32k views a month but cant reach that subscriber goal. moving faster lately that I've changed up my strategy should be at a thousand in bout 2 to 4 months at the rate I'm going now.
Now that you have the subs livestreaming can certainly help you with the watch hours

@@BCGaming05 I would definitely recommend making more shorts! Especially on trending games. If they don’t get many views, I’ve had success in taking them down and re-uploading. There’s definitely luck involved
I like everything from mxbikes to highly competitive First person shooters (apex) . I figure other people do too. So I do what’s fun for me!
This is what I have been trying to do. I am not doing the one game strategy but the one audience. I play FREE steam games, good or crappy. Gives me lots of experience in editing too. Some games may take me 35 minutes to do everything or all I can and I edit it down to a minute or never even publish it if it sucks. Maybe takes me all day for 9 minutes of good funny content but it is all practice and every game anyone else can download and play too if they want as they are free and usually smaller games.

Thanks for the video. I just had major back surgery and have been putting off creating a new TH-cam channel for some time. Now that I cannot walk, and won't be able to for months, I am going for it. I had a lot of cover songs recorded on another channel, as well as a bunch of captured games, disc golf tutorials, disc reviews, etc. I lost all of them, somehow. Now, I am starting over and I wanted to put these same things on one channel but under playlists. I would rather start with uploading a bunch of them, say 20, to get started. I've got two gaming videos uploaded to my channel right now and I've shared them and I've had a few views, but I really don't know how to get an audience.
I'm seriously working hard to make this a career for me but I'm finding it so incredibly difficult. And I play fortnite and COD so they're definitely popular lol

I usually have an outline for my videos, but since I play an unpredictable game(The Sims 4)I edit my plan as I go along. Like example I want my sims to go to the park in this video, but they accidentally start a fire. I also have a repeating problem where I keep repeating word I have previously said.

I like editing and gaming so I am thinking of starting a gaming channel aswell I also like watching anime so while doing it I also make edits on it and upload those on this channel of mine and 2 weeks later my journey is going just fine.
Thanks for the advice! I've started taking my youtube channel very seriously this year and its going well with The Witcher content but adding another game has been quiet. I think I need to try out some live streams as well.
Great tips. Playing just one game and doing storytelling is exactly what I started with. It's what I watch too. I want something extra that I don't get by playing myself.
Really want to turn something most of us nerds has been doing our entire lives that we love "playing video games, talking about/watching anime, trying odd foods, making goofy videos" into to something that I could actually make a living out of. My goal is for it to be my actual job one day! On the grind live every day😊 was on twitch for 4 years, switched to TH-cam in March of 2022. I have already learned so much and can't wait to learn more on my journey. I actually play multiple games on a daily basis, But I really enjoy playing Fortnite. So I'll take your advice and stick to as much of it as I can. Thank you👌

2022 was for starting my channel, 2023 is all about growth. I definitely need to utilize the entire TH-cam ecosystem.
Whoever is reading DONT give up on your channel. Think about all the hard work that you have already put in. Every youtuber was once in your spot they just kept going. Stay consistent and you will reach your goals. consistent uploads and improvement and some determination is all you need! I am going for 450 subs by the end of January!!!

I've bounced around so much this year playing games...I'm still torn on what I want to do because I like many things from Dead by Daylight to Retro wonders (I know I'm weird). But going forward for 2023 my goal niche is going to be Legend of Zelda games. I've always loved these games and with tears of the kingdom coming out in May of this year starting with Breath of the Wild now gives me a great opportunity to hone in on my planning of content skills and see what areas can I still bring value to the table.
I have epilepsy and I actually can’t work and I’ve played games for years and someone gave me the idea to actually do my gaming on TH-cam for a actual job! So this video is great 👌🏻 thank you man 😊

*With regards to my goal, i think for me I'm not trying to make it my actual job. I'm probably an outlier because i feel like my passion is within gaming and discussing games and working in the games industry but its not necessarily TH-cam attached. So like i would like to earn some income from it but i don't think i would ever actually quit my 9-5 for it because i feel like them gaming would become my job and id eventually get sick of it. Or fall into that trap that most creators and streamers fall into where they end up being stuck playing games that are trendy and popular on the platform rather than stuff they actually enjoy. I feel like keeping that separation may be healthy for my passion. But i know it will somewhat always hold my content back because I'll never really go all in.
*And i think you guys always summarized it perfectly with regards to finding one audience. The sweet spot where you don't tie yourself down to one game or one type of content allowing you some freedom. So still having intention and a niche but not just being someone whos beholden (if that's the right English word) to the algorithm and the trends on the platform.

I started the first channel exactly 1 year ago which become our “Family Gaming” channel and focuses on a younger audience. My 2nd let’s say “Real Gaming” channel is where I started building a real audience. I see same names in the comments and I play with some of them. Giveaways helped a lot with growth. I started a 3rd channel which is not gaming… it’s a gaming music on which I offer copyright free music. I have further goals but first I want the 2nd and 3rd to be monetized as well. If I can give one single advice then it would be: Take it seriously, consider it as a business, not a hobby. 🔥🔥
As a gaming channel, I can confirm that it’s really difficult to grow due to competition :(
Try Saudi drift, my vids come on search results and very low competition.
My advice is to make guides, tutuorials, how to-s etc. until you get a decent community together that supports you. Then you can slowly shift it over to more entertaining type videos.
@@JonsiMcflurry yaa you are right tutorial is perfect because many people want to know how he/she makes it but I can't...and because of this curosity people attracted towards your channel...but for gaming channel main point is a good thumbnail...for gaming channel making a good thumbnail is very challenging then other... create short for promoting you channel by your own by showing them little process then people slowly comes to see your videos...
