Interestingly, in Japan we also have a day very similar to dios de los muertos known as “Obon” where the spirits of our ancestors and loved ones visit our realm to see us, as we go to their graves to clean and leave gifts for them. We also put up their pictures and candles. When my Japanese mom first watched Coco, she was surprised and amused to see how Mexico does the same thing.

No, it's also bout duty to ur gone loved ones. It's not Holoween. If u don't take out photo of loved ones, sing their favorite songs, dance to their music, mention their names, tell their stories, eat ur favorite family food, most important, place flowers where they rest. If u don't do the duty to ur ancestors, don't party! Don't make a mockery out of it! That is our greatest fear, the USA ppl making it a clown show!! Yes, you celebrate, but duty to ur ancestors first and foremost!

@@lacalcetaderayas4505 still, that's on the research, which this channel at least bothered to do, (unlike the others mentioned) the "life experience", the mystical, the esoteric, all these are too subjective to document, this is more academic, even us in this culture, differ from those with other backgrounds, geographic locations, etc so subtly that only we can spot the details (and do) it didn't feel like the video is giving a version, but rather an informative general perspective, only in practice the details and flavors become apparent, the subject is too heavy. The movie "Coco" moved around and above the ritual, landing here and there, just to keep the story going, that's a version of the ritual, this, a list of some of the basic parts of the ritual, all over México, I counted with one hand the channels in this category; while some tried to express their personal experience, some were definitely aimed to misinform, denigrate, appropriate or skew opinion, not this site though. ✌🏼

This information is incorrect. Dia de los Muertos is a mesoamerican holiday. And we are not aztecas. Azteca is a colonizers term. We are Mexica!!
You're right, Mesoamerica is full of many diverse cultures and civilizations, and the names they use should be respected. I should have made those distinctions clear in the video. Every day I learn more and more so thank you for clearing that up, I'll be sure to keep that in mind for next time

Upon reading articles by several Mexican authors, dia de la Muertos is tracked back to western Europe ie Danza macabre and other celebrations far preceding the Aztecs.
Most scholars agree that Halloween as we know it originated some 2,000 years ago, when Celtic people in Europe celebrated the end of the harvest and the start of a new year in a festival called Samhain (

The day of the dead is actually a relatively new holiday that developed sometime after Mexican revolution. This was to promote a distinct Mexican identity and pride among indigenous peoples. The Day of the Dead in its current incarnation and its supposed historic origins was a complete fabrication by the Cardenas administration in the 30s for the same reason.

It's origins mimic western Europe celebration like Danza macabre etc.Far predating the notion that it was the Aztec culture that started the ceremony. It was actually the 3 day celebration that started on the 31st (dia de la angelitas, day of the little angels) all souls day on the first, followed by all Saints day on the 2nd. Not to say Mexico hasn't turned it into What it is now. Funny my abuela never said anything about the celebration. Didn't even acknowledge its existence.
@@johnstauffer1032 two separate practices developed over history, the fact they overlap is mainly because the church moved the dates to match All Saints Day NOT because the original practice was at that time. The original holiday was a month long celebration in August. Your abuela probably didn’t mention it because the Spanish did indeed do a great job of assimilating many of our ancestors into the Catholic Church. The fact you want to credit this holiday to Europe speaks for itself. The holidays are celebrated very differently. Your trying to convince yourself over a dance when the core of this holiday is NOT some dance. The holiday is about the graveyard celebration & the ofrendas & inviting our ancestors. There was nothing Macabre about Día de Muertos, it’s all about celebration & remembering & welcoming our ancestors where as European’s All Hallow’s Eve is the opposite.
Just because your abuela didn’t celebrate it doesn’t take away from how important it is to the rest of us Mexicanos. Don’t celebrate it, no one is forcing you to care about this culturally important holiday, but you suggesting you know something the rest of the world does not shows your ignorance. It’s significance is acknowledged by the rest of us Mexicans even if you don’t acknowledge it’s true origins. I know my family has been celebrating it for generations.
