  • Día de los muertos is a celebration from Mexico when families gather to honor the memory of deceased loved ones from Oct. 31st - Nov. 2nd.
Every year, we set up these beautiful altars to guide our loved ones home and we welcome them with offerings such as their favorite foods, water, even alcohol!
    Cempasuchil:
Dia de los muertos is recognized by it’s beautiful yellow and orange hues of marigold flower, or also known as cempasuchil. The reason we use these flowers is because their strong scent and bright colors help guide the spirits to their altars.
    Ofrenda Levels:
Ofrendas can be made of several levels. In this case I made mine of two that represent the the earth and the sky.
But the most common Is a 7 level ofrenda. The seven levels represent the seven destinations that a soul must cross to be able to rest eternally.
    Typical foods:
As well as the deceased's favorite food, altars usually contain traditional Day of the Dead food items such as pan de muerto, pumpkins, sugar cane, jicama and oranges - seasonal foods.
    Salt:
Salt is usually placed on a plate and stops the souls of the deceased from being corrupted by earthly temptations

I’m a 13 year old girl, my mom passed when I was 9 and she was hispanic. I always felt like I was going to intrude on a culture that isn’t exactly mine so I have never made and ofrenda. But recently my dad has remarried and I felt like I wanted to be closer or at least recognize my mom in a way so I’m going to make her an altar in my room.

its never too late. I'm 23 and my family just started making ofrendas after years of living in Texas because a lot of our family passed away this past year.

Also Mexican from Texas. This is such a common story for Tejanos. Our families faced a lot of identity struggles that we can never fully understand. Don't feel alone in this. Our family practiced some traditions, and lost others. But the great thing is, we are in a time where we can be proud of and honor our traditions. Now is the time to learn from one another and reconnect with our old ways.
Thinking about doing a community ofrenda for Dia de muertos in my hometown. Make it a neighborhood thing.

Last night as I watched this, the stories you shared about your grandpa made me smile and it made me long for my grandpa. When I went to bed I dreamt that I made an ofrenda (which i have never made by the way 😄) and in my dream he came back. I could see his face and even his eyes so clearly (which is very rare in dreams.) It’s the first time i’ve ever dreamt of him since he passed 4 years ago. I just thought I’d come back here and say thank you. 🙏🏻

      Annette Rivera, you are correct!
All around the world, the "time of the dead" is observed from 31st Oct (All Hallows Eve) till Nov 2nd (All Souls Day), with Nov 1st being All Saints day.
While many cultures have their unique names & ways of celebrating, this seems to be a worldwide observance.. especially in the parts of the world where it was introduced by the Catholic church from the 11th century.
P.S. Even my Venezuelan grandparents celebrated with graveside offerings. My parents no longer observe it, but each culture has their unique way of observing.

We light tons of candles and tomamos cafecitos y ron y después de las 12 marchamos a casa. ♥️ un beso.

I love this! I’ve always wanted to honor my late mother with my kids and was never sure how, but this would be so special for us to do! Where did you find your marigold/bead garland?

Made it myself! I found the beads at Michaels, took the stems off the flowers, and used a needle and thread to put it together!

@@cozyaholic did you use natural flowers for the garland?

    I loved your video.
It just confirmed a few doubts about small details…
My country is just a few steps from Chetumal Quintana Roo…
Belize is made up of a mix culture…
The North are more into difuntos and finados in November…
Día de los muertos would just define what I remember my Granny placed in her altar…
It’s just in a wider and elaborated scale… just beautiful…
    I will do mine this year… ☠️

fun fact: the cempasuchil (marigold) seeds are in the flower and look like sticks and can be harvested every year! it’s known as the one flower you’ll only buy once :)

For all the food or offering, what do you do after? Do you keep them, eat them?

Everything is so gorgeous. Can you share where you got your items from? I especially loved the wood bead garland (I want one ☺️)
Also the papel picado is so nice.

Nice! What do you do with the food after? Since its sitting out for 3 days, do you still eat it?

This is so sweet. I've seen pictures of some of the cemetery ofrenda and they were rather garish, but yours is lovely and I love the way you explained all the elements. This is a tradition that even an Anglo like me can appreciate and adopt. Thank you!
