This is not just a carnival issue. Last August. When on Royal C. As I approached my room my cards was not in my door. A man had a few room cards and was two doors away. As I told my granddaughter I had to go to guest services because our cards were not there. The man turned and looked at and said oh are you ___?. I said yes, he said oh they put your cards on my door, here. But he had several cards in his hand. I went and had new cards printed and explained I didn’t feel safe because of that

I’d want new keys too (though apparently old keys aren’t necessarily deactivated when reprinted…), but FWIW on a Royal ship (I’m thinking Liberty in Sept 2022) I got to my stateroom to find two envelopes, one with my keys and one with another couple’s keys to another stateroom. I found a crew member to hand the incorrect keys off to (I don’t remember if I didn’t know the room number, if it wasn’t nearby, or if I figured “staterooms opened a little bit ago, they may have already gone to guest services for new keys, and I’m tired and don’t want anything to do with this”), but it - somehow - does happen. It is a wildly busy day for the crew, and I think they can just grab more than the correct number of envelopes in the rush. But I already didn’t love the keys-at-door system, and get to my room for them ASAP when the corridor opens up.

Whoever stole the cards probably cruised with Carnival before and figured out the system and did this. Carnival used to give the cards in the terminal then decided to put them outside the door to make things go faster in the terminal. Unfortunately too many dishonest ppl around, they'll need to change back to the old system

I definitely agree with you Jay, once you check in and board the ship, that's when they should give you your card. Some people have zero morals and it's a shame that they cannot be trusted to not touch things that don't belong to them. So I definitely agree, it's time for Carnival to improve this process and I'm hopeful that they will.

Every Carnival cruise I been on, i had to put my birthday in and then change the pin at that time to use it at the casino. So the person who steels your card has to know your birthday. That is the only way you can charge a room and use it at the casino. So the person who stole it and used it at the casino had to be someone who knew them personally, since they would have to know your DOB to charge the room on the card.

I quickly learned go in the middle of the night! Best time is a few hours before arriving at a destination. Not as many agents but 5 people tops needing assistance. Done in 15 minutes.

The cruise lines used to hand you your cards before you got on, but I guess in order to shorten the boarding time they have it at your room. That bothers me, even though I haven't had any issues myself. It would really be easy to just walk down a hall and grab a handful of cards. You would eventually be caught on security cameras using them, but in the meantime, you can ring up quite a tab. Maybe there should be a way to activate your card, as you do when you first use it in the casino, and must establish a pin number.

This is part of Carnivals business plan to shorten boarding process which both my wife and I are fans. Are they aware that there is a risk of somebody's card being stolen? Absoluletly. No different than somebody losing their card at the pool or leaving it in a slot machine. I think that Carnival along with myself would believe that most people in general are honest. They have already determined the benefits out weigh the risk involved, and would change the policy if there was widespread abuse. We sailed February aboard the Celebration. I asked an employee at the retail shops about theft. Her reply was that it happens all the time and the thieves are dealt with. She said many cruisers forget that you are essentially in an enclosed city with cameras everywhere. They simply follow you through the cameras back to your stateroom.

Carnival used to give you your keys as soon as you boarded the ship. Back then, you could immediately go to your rooms too.
In those times, that was the best time to go to the “purser’s desk” to put cash or a credit card on your Sail N Sign. The reason that was the best time back then was because most people were so excited to see their cabin so it would only take about 15 mins of your time and you were ready to buy drinks. Then, about 1 hour later, there would be a huge line

You are right about the bad advice. Charges can be made unless there are restrictions placed on the account, so you may as well add a credit card to your account when you complete the online check in for your cruise. Either way you can always go to guest services the next morning (when guest services is not busy) and add a credit card to your account. Carnival used to give you your sail and sign card at check in after your photo is taken. Occur this did slow things down, but if one will have to wait to get to cabins anyway, this would be the perfect time.

Not sure when you sailed last with Royal Caribbean but our cards were left on our door on both the Harmony and the Odyssey in Oct and Feb respectively. On Celebrity last year Feb they were also left on our door.

When they changed how they gave you the cards (putting in your mailbox vs handing to you at check in) I asked this exact question. What happens when someone walks buy & steals your cards??

We have only done 1 Carnival cruise and it's ironic that when my DH and I went to our cabin and grabbed the envelope that had our cabin card in it I said, "Gosh I wonder if anyone would be stupid enough to grab someone else's card and use it." These should be handed at time of check in or go to a medallion app like Princess has. Thanks for sharing!

When in the casino, yes you can charge your room, but you would have to know the pin to charge to the card. That is your Month and date of birth, so how did the person get that information? Sounds very fishy.

She gives some good advice, I think I'm going to do exactly that. I'm going to wait until I'm aboard and have my key card in hand! Even if they can rack up charges, it won't be on my dime it would be on Carnival. Also, when I have issues, I go down to guest services late in the evening.

I remember when you embarked on the cruise ship, that's when you got your cards, they would take your pictures and then give you your sail card, Carnival use to do it that way, I don't understand why they changed, and put your card on your cabin door.

I think a solution to this would be to add a feature to the Check-in process that you have to acknowledge you have your seapass card before it can be used to make purchases.

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall that Royal gave us paper copies of our SeaPass card in the terminal and we didn't actually get the actual cards until we got to our room, where they were inside the room on the desk, not outside the room.

We’ve been on several cruises since they started leaving cards outside the staterooms and never had a problem other then getting the wrong color card (I turned platinum on 12/30 and was given a gold card). Regarding the casino I seem to remember having to enter a password in the machine in order to access your account. I remember reading about another guest forgetting their card in a machine and as a result someone used her account and racked up charges

I always wonder if that is bad security practice to put the cards on the door. Other cruise lines do that also. I remember back in the day, NCL gave you the card when you check in at the terminal before getting on board. So. No chance of anyone stealing it before you got it.

I wish Carnival would give us our sign and sail cards at check-in. I've often wondered if this ever happened. Well, now I know. This is horrible. This could be the difference between a good cruise and a bad cruise. It would definitely leave a sour taste in our mouths, and we are close to platinum status. How do we make this request to Carnival?

  • @willianbrennan414

I was on Royal’s Rhapsody of the Seas in January 2023. First cruise since 2015. I was surprised to see our cards attached to our cabin door.
Thank goodness we didn’t experience this, as we had added a CC during online check in.
But don’t the newer Royal ships use wristbands that are used like the room key card? Aren’t they at the cabin as well?

As long as you know your cabin number, you can charge to that account before you get your keys to the room. That's what we did on our Carnival cruise just a couple of weeks ago.

  • @Reed-2big

I was told MSC left your keys in your room which I thought that was dumb! But then they require you to associate a credit card to your key. Which is a hassle.
Celebrity does put you card on before sailing but they also give you your sea pass.

Wearables! As you check-in at the terminal, you get a bracelet or token-on-a-clip....as you check-in for e-muster the crew can activate your account to allow charges to begin. Two birds, one stone! Guests get to keep their charging abilities on their body at all times and the cruise line gives them a huge incentive to complete an e-muster as soon as possible!

  • @carolvanstavern845

It does not check IDs at the machines ...I don't think. But you do have to enter your pin number. So the charges would have had to be drink charges.. that should have been checked by the server.
