I don't drink alcohol but have a favorite soda brand that cruise lines don't have on board. I really appreciated being able to bring my 12-pack on board my last RCL cruise and frustrated that people who don't follow the rules ruin things for the rest of us.

Back in 2001 and 2002 when we would do a group cruise of about 40+ of friends from a restaurant/bar would go on 7 day Carnival cruises. We would all put a bottle or two in our luggage and whoever made it through would share and the ones that got caught would get their bottles back and the end of the cruise.
Both years I went, 99.9% of us got through.
In 2001, we went 18 days after 9/11 and figured security would be tight. Our first port was in San Juan. I bought like 5/6 bottles of rum in port. When we were getting back on the ship, I placed my bag on the conveyor belt to get X-rayed and I walked through the checkpoint. You could hear, see, and feel the bottles in the plastic bags. The security just handed me the bags back. Again, that was our first port of a 7 day cruise 😂

I smuggled a bottle on at least 8 cruises back in the early 2000's and I always got away with it. It got to be a fun game. Then all the Lines started using electronics to detect liquids. Once I had a bottle of gin in one side of my suitcase and cans of seltzer in the other. Upon boarding I found a note on my door to go to a location to claim my bag. The Crew Members were very nice but said the Scanner picked up "something " in my bag. I figured I was busted, but then they got my permission and opened it and saw the seltzer cans, they said "oh we thought it was beer" and closed the suitcase and apologized for the inconvenience. They were so sure it was beer that triggered their alarm, and that satisfied their curiosity, never looking any further under my rolled clothing, so they didn't find the gin. I never tried to smuggle after that because I knew they were refining their search skills, but I did enjoy a few Gin and Tonics on the "close call" cruise.

Just last June I had purchased a bottle of wine for another friend cruising with us, with the intention to give it to her once we met at the port. We were on Carnival and one bottle per person is allowed, but has to be carried on, not in checked. Well, I forgot the bottle and not only was it in my checked bag, but in an outer sleeve. Made it on no problem. I'm actually lucky it didn't break! I think sometimes it's just luck of the draw and how busy they are that day.

I just recently booked a cruise and it is VERY expensive to buy those drink packages. I'm probably a bit of a goody-two-shoes but I would rather budget in the extra cost of the drinks package and relax on my embarkment, instead of sweating that I'm going to be caught. At the same time, I understand that the cruise lines have had a hard time during the pandemic, but no one appreciates feeling like they're being hosed. It is frustrating to people to book a cruise and find out that all the "extras" end up doubling the price you are going to pay in the end. Drinks packages, WiFi, excursions, and gratuities all add up. The cruise lines have to make money to operate, but don't completely hose people!

The cruise lines charge more than the cruise fair for the drinks package on a 7 days voyage. They also charge more for a glass of wine (or a beer) on the ship, then most bottles (or six packs) of the same wine or beer purchased on land. As my wife and I can't afford to pay three to six times the price for alcohol, we don't buy it on a cruise ship. That said, we still find ways to drink (all be it, very modestly.)

I only like ultra-purified water, which is typically not what is offered onboard ships. I also drink a lot of water every day. I thought this was going to be about a bottled water hack, i.e., a way to get around buying the water package since they don't want you refilling bottles at the drink machines. Because I do have a hack for that lol. I discovered on Wonder that there is a water fountain outside on deck 5 where the running track is and you can easily fill up a bottle there. Then I noticed that on some of the ships where the track is up above the pool deck there is often a fountain there, too. I brought my water on board and a female clerk took one of my bottles and shook it and held the bottle up; she was looking, so I was looking too. I had no idea why she was doing this, then I found out watching TH-cam, ways people sneak alcohol on cruise ships! It was funny because I was thinking, that lady was waisting time on me, while the guilty cruisers was probably walking right pass security!!! I’m not a drinker, oh well. I do know on the video I watched, the people that go all out to sneak alcohol onboard, went beyond water bottles; they had a technique of using food coloring in mouth wash bottles to sneak alcohol onboard, crazy and is it worth all this 🤷🏽‍♀️ Oh and it’s a Yay for me, I rather order water, which I do, and have it in my room when I arrive! I’ve also ordered my soft drinks as well, less stuff to bring onboard! But I did invest in a 12 can cooler tote from Amazon because I rather bring some bubbly “can” vitamin water to replace drinking sodas 😊
    Thanks for sharing 😎🛳🛳
