I just figured out why this was so difficult. When working on Deutsche Autos it's of the utmost importance to hold your tongue in the proper orientation. Of course this will also go smoother after consuming at least a six pack of Weiss Bier! Works for me on my ML320 and Audi A4 Quattro.
Just the repair I was looking for!! Thanks so much. Just ordered the part which by the way had no picture to confirm plus is named by MB that super stupid part name of “Insulation” which has nothing to do with anything - you did all the groundwork so thanks again!!
Well now, MB parts online had a billing software snafu and cancelled my order. I called them up and they are fixing the problem so I can still get the part but the lady referred to this part as an "Installation" part so maybe somebody typed Insulation mistakenly. Installation is not good either but it kind of beats Insulation!
Thanks for the video , I hope my nearest Mercedes stealer still have it. Is it different Right or left or the same one? because I have the passenger one broken. Thanks
The ML320 I inherited has a broken passenger's side cup holder. Sure enough, the "insulation" piece you mentioned is missing the little black locking clip so that should be an easy fix. BUT, upon inspection, the previous owner also attempted to fix it and it's missing the two black pivot pins you reference at 4:00 in the video. Anyone know if those pins have a part number? Thanks for posting this video.
Just yesterday I noticed my cup holder actually won't pop down unless I wedge a flathead, or something like that in there, to pop it out. Is it likely to be the same culprit as you have in this video?
possibly that little black "Key pin" on top is sticky or the rubber oring inside the cylinder is sticky (could just need a spray of silicone for either ) or the little black key pin is partially broken and causing it to stick. Popping off the cup holder top you should be able to see behind to spray lube , or to see if the little key is broken
hey guys i just bought an ultra clean ML55 AMG and my passenger side cup holder has this crap going on, unfortunately i cant find this part anywhere would anyone know whereto pick one up.
Really ? I got one directly from the dealer , but that was 4 years ago. I guess supporting older vehicles with parts is becoming less of a concern for them unfortunately .
my problem is that i cant keep it closed at all because those two plastic tabs (what you called the "two little ears") that are supposed to be behind (inside) the dash have wedged themselves on the outside. so instead of stopping the cup holder from falling out, it is now stopping it from going back in, Im assuming i can just take it apart and reassemble with the two plastic tabs on the inside?
lol ...only certain cups fit properly . On the 2003 and up a "big gulp" sized 3rd front cupholder was added inside the centre console roll top compartment . Not many survived since they are a bit fiddly

Great video 👍🏻
My cupholder is doing the opposite. Its stuck in and doesnt want to come out. Is the fix the same?
Thanks for taking the mystery out of this procedure.
Ill be doing this this weekend.. thanks
Very welcome.. good luck 🤞
@@fupabox I installed a new one.. thanks your video's have been helpful as always

Insulation ... I know , ridiculous name for the part. "egg timer " would be just as appropriate a name . Glad it helped

Your video is very helpful. Would you happen to know the screw size and type that goes in the middle?
Superb video! Thanks mate. Does anyone know the part # for the pins that hold it in at the sides or are they a generic?

Nice job Sir!
The problem is this part is no longer available. Got lucky and found on eBay

I've been wondering how to fix that. My driver's side cup holder is driving me nuts.
The German word Dämpfung means both insulation and absorption and that part is a kind of a shock absorber. Hence is the part name.
You helped me alot.
glad it helped :)
I need to know the part # and a website that has it up for sale?
A163 680 01 26 I got mine at my local dealership. you can google that # to find one near you, I also showed the part # in the video
where is the link for the replacement part for the cup holder?
the whole cup holder ? if you mean the part I replaced, the part # is in the video description below the video
Yeah my passenger side is like that, looks kinda fiddly, I'm okay with just leaving it down all the time at least for now haha
on the passenger side it may not have bothered me much :)
yeah my passenger side is stuck down, revisiting this video to finally get around to fixing the damn thing

Interesting but they all have the same problems, so as mine.
wish those cup holders were more shallow.

Just tried to order at the dealer. They are no longer made. Try eBay

Thanks for the info.. I have only worked on 2000+ MLs and assumed they hadnt changed that part
