      Actually the options menu isn't bad, it's just the mixing, and it's not GEMS being bad, it was just the Composer's bad mixing of the Guitar (the tesla coil thing.) You could simply just go to GEMS or something (if you can find it) and edit the track on the rom to be quieter, the instrument is good, it was just TOO LOUD in the mixing.

    • @jtg55
      @jtg55 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could also actually learn how to use the program to smooth out and polish up the guitar to make it sound better.

    I remember how people back in the "console wars" days kept going on how all Sega games had that "twang" in their soundtracks and how it made them "sound worse".
    Well here is a great example of an soundtrack, not just this song but the entire soundtrack not only having that "twang" but making it sound so delicious because of it.
    I personally couldn't imagine what these songs would sound like, if they were made with similar soundfonts as sonic 1,2 or 3.
    I'm not saying that that would make them sound bad, but this soundtrack would lose huge part of it's soul if one would go and remove that "twang" from it.

    • @KitAkira1989
      @KitAkira1989 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I've always said that the Genesis sound chip isn't worse than the Super NES, it just has a different sound, and there's way too many great soundtracks for it outside of Sonic games. Vectorman 1 and 2, ToeJam & Earl 1 and 2, Earthworm Jim 1 and 2, the After Burner and Space Harrier ports, the OutRun series, Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow (released in the EU as "Donald in Maui Mallard", the Streets of Rage trilogy (yes that includes the third game), Alien Soldier, Dynamite Headdy, Gunstar Heroes, Ristar, Contra: Hard Corps, Comix Zone, Castlevania: Bloodlines, TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist, X-Men 2: Clone Wars, Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage... the list goes on!

    • @Jurtaani
      @Jurtaani 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KitAkira1989 i would also include tons of EA sports multi platform games to that list.
      Just take a listen to Desert strike intro music on both and try to come up with an argument for defense to the snes version.

    • @Nitro_GamePlay
      @Nitro_GamePlay ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's the Genesis Sound chip at it's finest, SEGA themselves knew exactly how to manipulate it to get the best out of it, they could eliminate the twang altogether like they did in Sonic 1, 2 and 3 & K, or use it to make some amazing music like this.
      Unfortunately a lot 3rd party games released on the Genesis had this twang and those designers who didn't make good use of the sound chip, their games had that twang with poorly composed songs that sounded more like a garbled TV from the 90s.
      The Genesis was capable of much more.z

    That is weird how they just rotate instruments over to different channels as they go, especially the bassline. In most cases you've shown us, the bassline basically stays anchored to one channel and most instruments tend to stick with one or maybe two channels if needed.

    • @rayredondo8160
      @rayredondo8160 4 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      That could be because, IIRC, the sound engine used for this was GEMS, and it probably automated some of the conversion to allocate where different instruments would be needed.

    • @Balefactor
      @Balefactor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      If you think _that's_ weird check out the Comix Zone vgms. Every other note moves to another channel.

    • @thesupervideogamenerdmore3171
      @thesupervideogamenerdmore3171 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@Balefactor Maybe that's the reason why Carpathia hasn't done a Comix Zone deconstruction.
      1) Too much time needed to sort it out.
      2) People would have to look at different areas of the screens very quickly.

    • @sheik124
      @sheik124 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Man the bass slide at the end of the riff literally slides through 3 different channels. It's probably like @@rayredondo8160 said and GEMS just automated how the channels were assigned.

    Spinball has a phenomenal soundtrack. EVEN the options music, I don't care what anyone says (I just assume they had one of the different Genesis/MD revisions that had trash audio)
    Top 3 sonic soundtracks as far as I'm concerned, up there with Chaotix and Colors

    • @rayredondo8160
      @rayredondo8160 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I actually like the Options music in both forms.
      Modern emulation plays the music in higher quality, removing the "ladder effect" that the original chip had and increasing the sample rate. These changes usually sound great, but on synthesizers like the Tesla Coils, the improvements amplify the extremely noise-like FM into what you hear.
      I like both the original sound and the ear-blasting version; they both have their charms.
