Hmm, I wonder what hardware was used to produce this piece of music. If only there was something that told me this information along with a dancing picture of the hardware in question.
Too bad, I guess I'll never know.

The original toxic caves used a program made by a department pf sega that made genesis music easier to produce. In part, it sounded much less impressive compared to higher budget forms of genesis music production which makes this song much more impressive. Mostly cheap, shovelware genesis games used the program later on due to its simplicity.

@@weegle. the gems program didnt gave the music any kind of particular sound, the musicians (or programmers idk) were the lazy ones, using the default FM patches instead of something with more quality

This is pretty great! The world needs more DX7 covers of Megadrive games.

Sonic Spinball already had some ridiculously catchy stage themes, and you have somehow succeeded in making one even catchier. :')

I yearn for the day that Yamaha do a proper revival of the DX7. The Reface is nice, but doesn't really cut it. Just re-manufacture the thing as it was so I can get my hands on a nice one without having to sell my internal organs first, god damn it.

Toxic Caves needs to be a Zone in a 2D Sonic game. I doubt I would, but if I ever get to make a Sonic game, I'll make it happen.
Alongside that idea I have where the intro cutscene would be in Green Hill to make everyone go "Green Hill is the first Zone again...", except that at the end of the cutscene, Sonic speeds through Green Hill to go after Eggman, and the first Zone is actually Marble Zone (since in the original game, it's right after Green Hill)

I used the original 32 factory patches for the DX7 II. just mess with the layering and velocity and you can get some very nice sounds.

Don't bother. Just get FM8 by Native Instruments or better yet, Dexed since that one is free. Both produce output signals essentially identical to the DX7.

  • @sheik124

Could a DX7 technically be used with FM patches that recreate instruments from Genesis VGMs? I don't know the first thing about FM synthesis other than playing with a few VSTi, but the chips in the two sound similar, the DX7 just sounds more advanced. Great remix, catchy without losing the feel of the original. Or the rage from that game.
