¡Very good interpretation! I think the good thing about this movie is that it is open to various interpretations, a character in the film says "the truth is what you want it to be", and I think that is exactly what the film intends, to show the impossibility of reaching an absolute truth, each person, crazy or sane, has a different perception of reality. As for whether she is the true mother of Romulus and Remus, I don't think so, she is like the mother wolf from the legend of Romulus and Remus, she adopts them and protects them.

Sometimes I get tired of unclear endings. I’m fine with it now and then but it seems so many movies leave u wondering wth just happened. I quite enjoy the twists and turns throughout the movie, but some clarity at the end is not going to ruin the damn movie. I watched 3 movies over the weekend and they were all really good, but left room for much speculation. Literally when this movie ended I almost launched my remote across the room like “f*** not again!”

The murder that she was "investigating" never really happenned, she created that in her mind and then "confirmed" her delusions when the actual murder takes place at the end of the film as a consecuence of her trying to scape. What I do not understand is, when she got admitted into de asylum, no murder had taken place yet, and when she is talking to her doctors long before the real murder took place, she says that she is the investigator of a crime, and some of the doctors believe it, but why? This was prior to the real murder, and the doctors who worked at the hospital should have known back then that there had not been any crime yet, so WHY did they still believe her when she claimed to investigate something that the knew was not real?? If you were a doctor at a hospital, you would know if a murder had taken place, which was not the case yet, so why would you believe someone who claims to be the investigator of something you know never happened?

I cracked the code when I noticed the handwriting on the outside of the letter she forged from Dr. Donadio matched the same handwriting of the hebepherenic schizophrenic note she analyzed that was supposedly sent from the asylum. She wrote those herself as well as the notes that were sitting on the table that she claimed were written by the director. You have to really pay attention for this detail but when she is formally admitted at the very beginning you will see 3 signatures on her voluntary intake form. Alice's handwriting on that form matches the schizophrenic murder note and the letters on the table from the "director".
She is in fact suffering from paranoia.

Guys De Olmo asking her what trouble she got herself into at the end this time makes me think she was married to his son and they are the parents of the twins. Something about all of this just doesn’t add up about being called mother and the director covering up the De Olmo death. I believe she killed him while she was admitted before and wrote that note. She was then voted to be discharged and began a new life with her current husband. The real reason she re admitted herself was to setup a plan to take down the director who knew her from before. He couldn’t comment on anything because he had signed some papers receiving cash from her husband. Once the husband found out her history from the director, he took everything and left her. The reason she wanted to come back and get the director fired was because he knew she was crazy and killed her husband. She didn’t want that to get leaked in her new life as a PI. Idk this is all kind of wild but if you piece together things it really does make sense.

I have a theory. I too believe she really has paranoia and was there to solve something that never existed. In the dream sequence when doc says "Truth is what we believe it to be" are words she is remembering from her previous therapy sessions. That was the time she was actually taking help from her doctor but now she is way down that lane and doesn't realise she has a problem. Truth is what we believe it to be is not a sign by directors that movie is open to interpretation. Truth is not subjective and in the movie the comment is another term for paranoia.Believing something that isn't true.
Also if you pay attention she said she got her admission signed by her husband along with some bank papers. Those are the papers that were needed for the funds transfer. That's my theory.

If she had really poisoned her husband and her husband had realised it, then why did a different doctor (not the doctor admitted her) was shown, when she made the first allegations against the chief doctor. The other doctors started doubting the Chief doctor coz his treatment was way out of normal procedure - why is that? Just coz the dwarfs body was lying next to detectives (fainted) doesn't mean she killed the dwarf, why was the chief doctor reluctant to be open? He tried to rub on the detective. Her friend saved her. If she has really poisoned her husband - then why poison him partially, why not poison him completely? If she has really poisoned she would not be thinking to prove the criminal (the giant man) she could have just escaped from the gate. This shows her humane and detective instincts. Hence she was framed by all the three - Her husband, his doctor friend and the chief doctor.

First, the mirror that she took from her bag at the end was broken ( sign of disput with her husband) secondly why did she go back to the hospital after hearing the death of Romulus from the coroner while she had the opportunity to escape unless she is the real Romulus’s mother and at the end we saw clearly Dr saying to her “in what trouble you got yourself again?” Like she tends to lie and invite stories

I believe Alicia! 100%! Why?..well it’s simple it’s all in the letter address to the doctors at the Asylum.
See if in deed the Dr. Who arrived in the end wrote the letter, Alicia wouldn’t have known the contents of the letter word for word.
..but because the husband and the Dr. conspired to get her committed, they hatched a plan that would involve Alicia participating in her committing herself.
While I do believe Alicia do suffer from some sort of paranoia, stemming from the sort of private investigative work she does, I don’t believe it broke her psychological mind.
With that being said, The Dr. at the Asylum, the husband and the Dr. In the end were all in on the plan to commit Alicia.
Let’s not forget the check made out to the asylum Dr. by the husband.

First of all: how in the world did the Asylum allowed such a large area of "forest" to be visited FREELY by patients(some known of have fighting before) WITHOUT a worker of the asylum following them? That made 0 sense.
Second: if SHE wrote the letter to enter the asylum, why did she choose an illness that would be very hard for her to prove fake? She could have said she had any other disorder, like hydrophobia like that guy. It would be so easy for her to prove she was just faking if something went wrong as it did.
Third(I may be mistaken about this one): she said Dr Alvar knew why she was there, so why all the trouble faking her illness to enter the asylum? (again, I may be wrong about this one, but I kind of remember she said that)
Then: wtf was that about her being the mother of the twins? was she completely nuts at that point? That was very weird, because at the same time she "embraced" being their mother, she, in her mind, knew she didn't belong in there as was set up. That was very confusing.
Also: why the part where it shows the twins changing places? What was the point of that?
Plus: The guy with hydrophobia, was really just afraid of water or he had a condition? Because it was shown that after he put his arms under water, SEVERE blisters and rashes appeared on his arm, which indicates he REALLY has a condition and he is not only paranoid about it.
Finally: was there even a suicide there?
The movie is fun and all, but it fails to explain itself. Shutter island gives you hints THE WHOLE MOVIE but you don't mind them until you reach the end, and when you rewatch it you will notice. This doesn't happen in this one. You never know what is true or not and it never cares to explain.

My primary query revolves around whether the story initially narrated by Alice, which seemingly takes place as a crime scene, is intricately connected to the crime investigation she embarks on within the asylum during the pre-climax of the movie. I find myself pondering how such a connection is plausible. Is the narrative within Alice's mind, or does it reflect her remarkable cleverness? Furthermore, I'm intrigued by how Dr. Family Dr. comes to learn about the murder narrative, and how this narrative aligns with the events in the pre-climax. It's a subject that has not received the attention it deserves.
No one seems to be discussing the correlation between the fire in the artwork shop, the rainfall, the murder of one of the twins, and their proximity to the crime investigation Alice is involved in.
Both the narrative and the real-world events seem to overlap, leaving us to question which version is credible. Can you provide an explanation for this intricate web of connections?

Actually she 1000000000% victim and healthy the doctor said to her that the the truth is whatever she want to be, according to her files the doctor and her husband set her up very very smart because if she really a patient so why he doesn’t write in the files that her husband or someone else maybe someone else took her money from from her bank, and why anyone don’t speak about her friend who afraid of water in the start of the movie they threaten him to “do and say what they want” and than when they called him when alice need his help he tell some story about the dwarf and dilution or not she really dosnt remember what’s happened there in the woods ,and it can be that she so intelligent and at the same time the movie creator deside to present us Alice in A character of a superficial murderer I mean if she is really a murderer so my eyes wanted to see more feels and emotions when she find out about her husband, cause we saw Alice feel bad for other patients and after all what in wrote now I think I’m becoming paranoid cause how it can be that the murder took place exactly the same way the murder she came to investigate???

The ending clearly shows that she is insane:
Watch the contrast between her face expression and her behavior when she sees the doctor that supposedly hired her to investigate the death of his son and it is not the guy that hired her (in dr. Alvarez office) and the last scene.
You can see the shock and kind of acceptance in her eyes when she sees her doctor at the end. She wouldn’t behave that way if it were a setup- remember how arrogantly she behaves in situations when her narrative is being put to doubt.
That is because she wasn’t just lying: her mind painted the picture where her doctor was that man that hired her to investigate his son’s murder and it all fell apart when she saw him as her doctor (remember also how dr. Alvarez explains it: her conscious mind just makes up a story).

Great review! Watched it last night and would rate it as the best Psychological thriller I’ve seen. The ending is awesome because it adds a heavy weight to the Scenario that she is indeed a patient. However there is still small chance that she’s not a mental patient but was indeed framed. The movie doesn’t absolutely spell it out which is why it is so brilliant!
I think I will need to rewatch it to look for clues to the various scenarios, for example Is she really the twins mother. If she is she would’ve had to been committed previously and then was able to get out. Are there any clues that the other patients recognize her?

My thought is : she's "sane" but a habitual liar with a heart of gold.
Her three major lies : having her husband sign the paper, fooling the first doctor , and pretending to be the coroner but her in harms way so that she could protect someone else.
She has a habit of lying, getting caught, and then explaining why her deception was necessary all while humiliating her mark. We saw that leads to resentment in characters and it no doubt lead to resentment in her husband who saw the perfect opportunity to be rid of her by hatching this elaborate scheme of poisoning himself , and presenting her with a case from the fake Dr. Olmo.
Being married to her for so long I would imagine that some of her duplicity would rub off on him and his resentment for her lies would reach a boiling point.
At the End when she sees the imposter she is still shaken because his word is better than hers regardless if it it is truth or not. After all, he is the only other person on the outside besides her husband that could vouch for her.
Also, I think it was cool that there was a crowd behind her like a jury, this whole discussion makes me feel like we were in that audience, deciding wether she was a bad egg or not 🧑‍⚖️
Just a theory though, they say in the book she actually IS insane, but for the movie 🤷‍♀️

I agree with the idea that she was set up by the husband. Even if we are going to discredit her account of the events entirely, this leaves us with the fact that the main doctor was found to have received a large sum of money from the husband. we know that through the young female doctor not through Alice. He explained it by saying he transferred the money to the hospital accounts, but he is not to be trusted at all ( he wanted to cover up the murder, he manipulated and traded his vote for a safe exit via resignation to escape any consequences).
Also her shock at the end was because she found that her husband lied again and introduced the man as the father not the doctor.

It's only the two of them, so that dialogue only makes sense if she really thinks he is Del Olmo.
If she knew the guy to be Dr Donadio, what would have been the difference if he is seen or not?
She explicitly asks Alvaro to contact Donadio, why would she do such thing if she knew that who she belives to be Del Olmo is actually Donadio.
As soon as the real Del Olmo shows up, the question remains, who dropped her off, not Del Olmo.
When the real Del Olmo shows up, she has no reaction.
When the fake "Del Olmo" arrives and claims he is Dr Donadio, her world seems to collapse.
There is a private investigator diploma in her house, thus she is a PI at least on paper.
And she always insists that there are copies letters sent to Alvaro in her home, why?
Why does Alvaro deflect when the rest of the doctors want to fact check her story? It could have been a quick end to the story (just like the eagles taking Frodo to Mordor :)
If she really killed her husband, why wasn't anyone looking for her or her husband? No police investigation.
How about this, Alice's husband, a playboy from what it seems, decides to get all her money (maybe a big outstanding poker debt).
He gets Dr Donadio and the director Alvaro to play along.
Dr Donadio, a real doctor, impersonates Del Olmo, her facial expression at the end can be attribute to the fact that she realizes who was the mastermind all along. Dr Donadio, as her husband from what we know is a simpleton.

What about the first murder? Same fire blown and same investigation scenes? It is only the first murder then she must be lying because if the first murder were never happened then why is she here?
But then what about the letter signed by dr. Dureti (or whatever his name is) how can she read word by word from the letter if she didn't type it? How can she know letter's content?
If u believe she is lying then how she knows about the letter?
If i believe she is ok and it's a trap then who was she investigating if there were no murder?

The fact that she was shocked at the end of the movie to see her previous doc really says it all. As, doc can prove her lie and there is no escape after that.
And husband leaving her bank and home means he ran away before she can come back to kill him.
So all adds up at the end

or she is not a detective, nor rich, all these events are in her paranoid head with multiple presonnalities. look at it from this point of view: we the audience are the doctors and she is the patient and at the time of the interview she tells this crazy story from start to finish. all these characters are her imagination, so she can tell us (audience /doctors) to see and hear what she wants. small remark: the murder of the twin brother was committed in 1978 and she was hospitalized in 1979 to investigate, but indirectly causes the same murder in 1978, ca c a symptom of multiple personalities and paranoia

The part that confused me was if there was an actual death there she was investigating - the son committing suicide.
I thought there wasn't a murder, rather the husband made that up so when she's there she seems crazy trying to solve a murder that didn't happen.
WE as the viewers think the murder she's investigating is the murder at the end, so when Dr alves says "there's no mystery, it's a suicide" we think he's referring to the murder at the end of the movie that the editor spliced in making it seem like it already happened.
But in reality that death hasn't happened yet. So what "suicide" is alves referring to. Dr. Olmo really had a son that committed suicide there a year prior?? And Dr. Donadio PRETENDED to be Dr Olmo at the start? Wtf?

That's the thing, the movie leaves both options for interpretation. You can either believe that:
      a) She is a legit mental patient and Dr. Donadio is her real physician that appears at the end. Whether or not he really drops her off in the asylum is up for debate. After all nobody else saw him there, we only "know" that he dropped her off before she says so. But who's to say that she's even telling the truth?
      or
      b) She really is just a private detective on an investigation and her story about her husband setting her up is completely true. If so, than that person that appears in the end is in on the whole scheme and is merely pretending to be her doctor, and he's just there to further reinforce that she's actual insane.

I think the end with dr Danubio it's put there deliberately just to gave orgasms to our brains and create this debates, which I find brilliant and fun because everyone can make his own ending!
My ending is, she was really a detective that was tricked and she snapped at the end because that's the fake doctor and she knows he will put her back, and from there we gonna have a second part! Tbh it's hard to see the real ending if there is one, but too many loose ends, if she was the mother, they said the boys were born in the institution therefore they should have some records of her, the poisoned husband, there's no evidence about it during the movie, the big donation and extreme treatment from the director lead the police to get on his tail, so because there are so many loose ends I think it was a magic touch to let us fabricate our ending based on our understanding, like the end of inception, was he dreaming or not, same question here, was she a real patient or a real detectiv, brilliant movie and touch!

Enough content to point out that she's normal and the watchers are getting too creative indeed lol. Her reaction in the end scene was of absolute shock because she realised her fate is sealed and she's lost all credibility now in front of the panel. Because the doc that comes in at the end of it, was bought off too, major plan.
The main reason being, the main doctor gave her a super severe punishment even after it was established that she was the one assaulted in the forest. And the lady doctor agreed too that the "punishment" and treatment were too severe. The main doctor was clearly trying to break her mental stability.
    1. The husband could not be tracked, he ran off to South Asia with the money.
    2. If she really tried to poison her husband, he would have gone with legal action.
    3. Why are we forgetting that the midget did assault her? She didn't have a violent nature, and it's clear that the dude who was deluded as her son protected her.
    4. Would a doctor really be dumb enough to send a note with her to be given to the facility she's being admitted to for treatment?
    5. Are we all going to forget the cheque?
However I wouldn't blame some watchers for getting too imaginative, the film takes too much liberties to make it interesting but it works against it.
(Sorry I'm just bad with names lol).

You're so way off on this it's pretty funny. I believe we are led down a merry path where we are led to think she was genuinely being committed, but she prepared for this and went along with it, knowing exactly how things would play out right up to and including the reveal of the real father of the man whose death she was pretending to investigate. After that she had to think on her feet. When the dwarf was killed (it really is irrelevant who did kill him) she used that to her advantage later on when she encountered the giant and told him it was one of the twins who killed him, in the hopes of causing further chaos and distraction. When she encountered the coroner as she was about to flee and heard that one of the twins was murdered, she knew exactly who had done this, so she seized on that opportunity to get away cleanly and legally, as escaping on foot while her only option at first, would be very risky and had too great a risk of being tracked and recaptured given that she was miles away in the middle of knowhere. She killed her husband, emptied the bank accounts and sent the overly generous donation to the asylums director herself before being committed. The only fly in the ointment was the genuine Dr who turned up at the end. She was a high IQ sociopath who merely used people and had no real emotions for anyone but herself. It could also be the case that she genuinely was set up and the reveal at the end that the father of the murdered man she was investigating was in fact the Dr who' falsified the report that led to her being commited is what shocked her so much. The movie allows for both being equally true.
