  • Netflix''s Original Movie "The Discovery" is a philosophical mind-bender with a major reveal in the ending. And if you re-watch it a second or third time, you might see some new rabbit holes to go down or you might see things differently.
I’ve watched it 3 times in full and a handful of clips a handful of times. This video is my take on it as of April 3, 2017.
Please let me know if you liked the movie, where I was mistaken, what I missed, and any other theories you have. Thanks!

Very well done but with a minor error. The corpse is "Pat" as in "Pat Phillips" as in I played Pat in the film.

no way!!! Paul, is this actually you!?!? That is so cool!! Thank you for watching the video and commenting!!! omg!! (i feel like a teenager typing "omg" haha but its completely accurate to use that right now)
I'm jammed up right now trying to finish another video for Game of thrones, but I couldn't resist responding since I just saw this. I'm going to have to rewatch later to hear what I said. I'm so embarrassed. I stink at life! lol
If I had to guess, I may have slipped and said "Phil." I could see myself making that kind of a mistake. If that's what I did, I'm blaming it on alliteration + the last name resembling a semi-common first name.
But for the record, I apologize! I totally knew your character's name because I actually double checked it on IMDB while writing down the full name with pen and paper. I specifically remember thinking "ah ha. got it now!" LoL
I am terrible with names in real life, as well as in shows/movies. Here's a silly side story if you have a minute. I'm the type that can watch an entire show/movie and know who people are speaking about as I watch it...but moments after the movie ends, I will struggle to say a single characters name. It's weird the way the brain works sometimes, but that's an entirely different rabbit hole that I don't expect you to join my in lol
Anyway, sorry to respond with a novel. This was exciting though. Your cast and production team. Everyone involved. You have quickly become my favorite team ever! I look forward to seeing you in more works in the future!
Thanks for the kind words, Paul. All the best!

very spot on, I just watched the film and it really drew me in. I can't believe people who say this film is boring or a waste of time, it makes you think and that is what films are suppose to do in my opinion. Thank you for bringing some extra depth and insight in a very good film.

I'm totally with you. I watched it three times all the way through. Granted, third was specifically because I wanted to make a video. But even if I wasn't going to make one, I really enjoyed it and would have watched it a second time either immediately or soon. Then again, i LOVE rewatching and rereading stuff lol. maybe i'm nuts
as far as people liking/disliking it, I feel like it will have a similar reaction as The OA had. And not even implying that the same people will either like or dislike it. But I feel like it's the kind of movie that will have black or white reactions. People either dig it a lot or dislike it a lot.
But the cult followings are the best anyway. Maybe not in terms of the producers making money, but in terms of learning. I feel like it is only a matter of time before some wizards emerge on reddit and blow our minds with some new connections/interpretations that I was unable to find/understand
but anyway, thanks again for the kind words!

The whole “living in a loop” realization was also slightly hinted at when Isla was sitting with Will on the beach and she was drawing what looked like an infinity symbol in the sand as she told him about loosing her son. I didn’t notice it the first time I saw the movie but I noticed it the second time. She also drew an arrow pointing the the ocean as if to say that he died at the same beach and maybe that’s why she went there to kill herself.

    A couple things:
    1. There's no indication that Will kills himself after learning of Isla's suicide. I understood it as him living his life with the regret of not helping her and then eventually dying (like everyone else)
    2. Lacey does shoot Isla in the stomach with the intention of killing her. She says she didn't kill her and just relocated her because how can you really kill someone is their consciousness is proven to continue on? She relocated her consciousness to the next plane of existence. Lacey foreshadows this earlier in the movie when she says something along the lines of "It's only a matter of time before people start killing other people since we know there's an afterlife."
Thanks for the video, it certainly helps piece things together.

    • @bridge4
      @bridge4  7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

as far as Will killing himself, the only indication (its light) is that she says something like "you did what everyone else did", which i interpretted as suicide... admittedly, its not definitive tho. i hear ya
as fr as number 2. i may have used poor wording. i knew she wanted to "kill" her, but i mean not "kil kill" - like a final forever kill (by shooting her in the head). poor wording on my part. apologies and thanks for highlighting that!

Why would you need to leave the brain intact for the "discovery" to occur? The way I read it, an intact brain was only necessary for the machine.
Also, I can't believe I misinterpreted that death flag. I was somehow assuming that Isla was going to end up killing Will, when she said it was just a matter of time before that happened.
She wasn't in the room when they were discussing the real discovery or tearing down the machine. Also, she seemed so happy to see him when they walked outside to address the people, that I was thinking she was going to find out what they were trying to hide and do to Will just what Lacey did to her. Either because she was pissed that he tried to keep the final discovery from her or because she wanted him to have a chance to save his mother.

One of the most important things about this film is..the discussions that are posted here. That was one of the take-aways that Justin Lader and Charlie McDowell wanted to have. That viewers enjoy the film but also talk about it. Talk about the concept and the characters. They are both brilliant writers and one of the things Charlie mentioned at one of the previews is that this movie's budget kept them focused on the characters so that the story could be told without having to spend a lot of money on things that weren't necessary. My character actually had lines that were trimmed in order to keep things cost effective. Pat and his sister Janice have an argument about not visiting the hospital.

What was the point of the slightly awkward brother character? He didn't even seem to have an arc. I also don't understand what the arc of the father was either. In fact, even the lead protagonist's motivations escaped me. Something about... Feeling guilty he shared his memory of seeing the afterlife when he temporarily died as a kid once? And mom killed herself because dad was late to dinner one too many times? And the woman's problem is she is a negligent mother who keeps losing her kid so she.... Well she just gets shot and dies and that's pretty much it. What was her arc about and what was the significance of the son she keeps losing?

I have something to say about the outcome on this:
First of all, the Isla we get to know is a projection of Will's memory: "I'm a part of you.", and it made him clear the fact that Will felt guilty after this woman committed suicide in his first life, and it was the reason for him to always come back to the ferry.
We see him worried because he did "saved" her from commiting suicide in his latest life, but she died anyways; and he asked: "What am I supose to change?" to make her "live", and Isla said: "There's more then one way to save someone, Will." And I think he immediately thought about her son, Oliver. And that by "saving" him, Isla wouldn't intend to kill herself in the first place.
We have to keep in mind that Isla is a projection of Will's own consciousness, that's very important during the climax and the outcome of the story.
So, Will is about to die (again), and he's not ready to leave Isla, but he said to her that it's not a big deal because he will return to the exact same place ¿right?, and she tells him that he transcended that loop (when he save her in the water), and he didn't have to go there anymore, and that he will go to another "place". Will didn't want to leave her, because he felt in love with her, and he asked her: "When I get there, will I be able to remerber you?", and she answered him: "I hope so". He accepts this new "death", with the only wish of remenbering her. He "dies".
And then we saw him, on the beach, he sees little Olivier playing in the water, and he "saves" him, "meets" Isla, and the most important thing for him: he remembers her; creating a FREAKING EXISTENCIAL PARADOX. What will happen next with him remembering? It's very romantic, but does it work in this movie own universe? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
All of this world, the story we see, is a elaboration of his own mind, and I think it was the way of the character to tray to "help" her, so he can be at peace with himself. So in a way, we can say that he is "saving" (or dealing) with himself, but I don't think he IS Oliver (in a metaphysics kind of way). But (speculating), if this child didn't existed at all in his first life, he can be a representation of Will.
In other way, he felt in love, out of guilt, with an elaboration of his on mind. And thrives all this resets so he can "save" her and be with her. And if we go deeper, maybe his first life was also an elaboration of his own mind, who knows.
Also, at the end of this movie we don't know in wich ways this "reality" connects with his first life:
Firs of all, the micro "flashback" of the conversation they had on the ferry in that "first life" doesn't tell much. Did this woman told him about his son? Did he find out after she comtited suicide, by the news? Did she have a son at all? What happened with the "discovery"? Did his mother committed suicided? Did he really drowned when he was little? We simply don't know.
It is a movie that leaves you with more questions than answers. It shows how "consciousness creates reality", and has a little bit of a fractal construction vibe to it. And the paradox created at the moment he remembers her, it's just crazy.
Isla means "island" in spanish, btw, and the movie develops in an island, so that adds something to the construction of the script.
If this was a book it would be called: "Dealing with guilt: A hundred ways of having a conversation, fall in love and be happy with my conscience (after my first death)." Hahahahaha.
That's my analysis on this, 6.5/10 for me.
    P.S.: I REALLY liked your analysis ^-^

please let me know if i'm understanding you correctly. do u interpret it as Isla always being just a memory, until Will went to the next life? or was she only a memory that last time, when he was sort of between life and death?
as far as the names, i stil plan on doing a "things you missed" type video for this movie where i'd touch on stuff like that. there are more aside from Isla. think about "will" in terms of people leaving a "will" when they die. And wasnt their last name Harbor? i found that pretty cool (like a harbor on the sea...for boat)
when i make a "things u missed video," do you mind if i screen cap your post when i mention the "Isla" symbolism?
btw, i loved your little emoji thing. this ( ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) hahahah that made my morning. phenomenal. actually, i loved the entire post. awesomeness. thanks for taking the time to share this!!

      Hi there!
What I meant was that Isla is a construcction of Will's mind throughout the whole movie, or at least since his first "reset".
Now, having in consideration the non lienar time theme, we can say that all of the characters are "individuals on their own". And Isla and Tom are aware (in some level) of what is happening, and that is a shared reality that they have to live in till they move on to another place/time of existence (trascendence). And this has a lot to do with "reincarnation" and the Samsara's wheel.
For me, that fractal loopy multi-dimentional "one repetitive existence" premise, is kind of complex, because the decistions that they make in each of their reboot, afetcs each and every one of the planes of existance, affecting each other's lifes as well, even with someone's birth, for example. And that's pretty crazy, but anyway...
I would love to see your "things you missed video".
PS: Sorry for my english ;D

Paola Ysamar De Andrade so every time he fails to save her when he eventually dies he resets to that same ferri. While he was in limbo, he was talking to a memory of Isla (One who is strangely conscious of what is going on). He dies, moves on to the next plane of existence but, it's not a memory or a moment in his life that he lived. It's more of an alternate reality if he had been there at that very moment to save Oliver. Which now that I'm thinking about it, maybe he always subconsciously knew that the only way to save Isla was to go to that beach and be there to save Oliver. Which would explain why he was always drawn to it. I don't no it's all confusing in the end every reality doesn't matter and every individual in the infinite different realities are their own self. So the same Isla he saves is not the same Isla he first met in reality 1 or 2. She's her own but, in Will's mind he has saved her. So now Will can move on to the next regret in his life to try and fix that. But whether that be a regret in reality 1 or the other realities is another question that needs answering. I cam see why now you typed a lot. I might actually read it now.

Which got me thinking on romantic love and son/mother love... and although it wasn't confirmed it was hinted that Will's mother also drowned, right? It happened in the tub, but still... Isla drowned in one of the realities, too! So what if Isla and Will's mom are also the same person?!
This movie is AWESOME! And your explanation just opened a Pandora's box of interpretations for me. Thank you very much!

Maybe they could improve the already fixed regrets and keep doing it until it’s perfect then that’s their heaven: the fact that they don’t have regrets. And maybe that’s why we’re taught to do good deeds so that the process of fixing your regrets is a lot quicker than if you’re a bad person and have a lot of regrets.

I liked the movie, but it begs the question to be asked: Once you've gone back and "fixed" your "greatest regret," wouldn't a new "greatest regret" eventually occur? How often would you keep re-living your life? Till "perfection"? What then? Also, wouldn't "one long drawn out middle" be a kind of "hell"?
    Interesting philosophical questions.

loved the movie, thankyou for helping to make sense of it all, something I did notice that I don’t think any one else has is the mum. You never get to see a close up picture of her throughout apart from seeing her in the dads memory but as she appeared closer I knew who it was. Right at the beginning of the film the dad is being interviewed by a woman. The woman states that she had been specifically asked for by the dad. I think this is another alternate world and this is the mum, the dads subconscious got her to interview him without him really knowing that it’s her, if that makes sense. I really felt that she in particular meant something. He was on another alternate world and she was there with him he just didn’t realise. But he asked for that interviewer on purpose.

Forgiving his father was probably the big change that allowed will to transfer to a new plane of existence. :)
      What do u think?

  • @orlybabe
    @orlybabe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

This explanation was really clear. I bawled at the end of the movie. But there are a couple things I don’t understand:
1 - what was the proof that Thomas found that the consciousness/brain waves go somewhere? Surely it had to be something undeniable, demonstrable and graphic to have millions of people immediately believe it and commit suicide.
2 - when people die and go to the next plane where they try to fix their biggest regret - is the idea that there are always these alternate planes of existence going on, and when you die in one plane, your consciousness gets transferred to you in another plane? Or do you reincarnate like get born at again and relive it all?

    • @Sugho2023

His own experience of him drowning gave him the ability to save the boy at last. Maybe the Will wasn't Oliver in another reality/dimension, but because he had that lifethreatening experience and knowledge he could realize in what dangerous situation the boy was in whereas another person wouldn't estimate it as risky and wouldn't help the boy, walking by leading him to drown without knowing.
I had these situations in my own life where I knew something and I didn't help a person because I thought they surely were aware of what they are doing and was surprised when what I forsaw happened and in other situations I helped and people actually thanked me that I pointed it out to them, some didn't say anything which was okay too because I knew what could be.

This movie was underrated! Your analysis was excellent. I ll propose a couple more things. I dont think they were intended by the writers but they definitively left room for interpretation. Firstly there is no beginning reality, and no ending (goal) reality. What we saw was a period of Will's consciousness, he defines consciousness as brainwaves. There is no need for a first discovery, it was his explanation of what's going on.... everyone in what you called reality 2 was a figment of his own consciousness. It goes the same with all 3 realities we saw. The discovery in a sense was his explanation of going through the iterations. He is thomas, Will and Oliver. Maybe he even is everyone. With the exception of isla who is someone important. But after so many iterations, roles are mixed up. Sometimes she is his wife sometimes his mother. The machine is also fictional. Its a subconscious way of seeing his iterations. In some of them he died as a child "what happens when a child dies?" Will's mother in reality 1 committed suicide by drowning cause her son (Will) drowned. Isla intends to do the same. He project' his mother on the fictional character of Isla. All three realities are equally real. Death is a relocation. That was his explanation. Also I have a theory that death was not necessary to go through consciousnesses... In the beginning Will is Thomas. Maybe he jumps immediately to Will and reality 2 or maybe he dies "as everybody else" and then goes as Will in reality 2, where his projection Isla, immediately questions his identity. I could go on. This was a brilliant plot and heavily underrated. I hope in time people realize the potential.

    • @arnesbeganovic
      @arnesbeganovic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

When you said "Maybe he was everyone" I immediately thought about series "Dark". Same concept but with different plot. I just love this type of multiverse stories. Leave you without answers but also without questions. Nothing to be solved. It's just as it is. No beginning or end. It just is. You choose something and it exists. When you die, you came back to same place to choose something else. Or maybe it happens at the same time. Time is not important. It's always PRESENT but ever expanding present. Just like our universe :)

so i was thinking that he was able to movie on since he forgave his dad. but i think you are right as well. he may finally be over his mother's suicide.... and maybe its because he knows that she moved on. and he doesnt have to worry about her? what do u think?

    • @stfuliana
      @stfuliana 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@bridge4 right! but also the movie hints that oliver is actually will right so it’s safe to assume that lila is wills mom. so when he saves lila from committing suicide, he’s technically saving his mom from committing suicide in a different reality. everything is connected.

Few years ago I thought about some similar idea for a draft based on the concept that when you are about to die your whole life flashes before your eyes, however when the flashback ends isntead of it ending and you die, you enter into a second flashback as soon as the first flashback is about to end and so infinitely, basically creating a loop in which the protagonist is stuck. I'm truely happy to see that some really good writers thought about something similar and made it into the best movie I have watched so far.

    1) I don't thing will kills himself in reality one. I believe he just died. Wills version of Isla (the first 're-incarnated' one we see on the boat at the end) tells him about him going about his life but his regret about not saving a stranger isla. And then she said 'you just died like everybody else.' Also to him (at this point) he doesn't see suicide as an answer, for both moral and discovery reasons. So I don't think the first time he died, it was suicide.

    • @bridge4
      @bridge4  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

not to be nitpicky, but i think the wording was slightly different. instead of 'you just died like everybody else', i think it was 'you died just like everybody else'
if it was the second wording, that leads me to believe he committed suicide. but no matter what, i feel like it was open ended. as opposed to the wording of the sentence, its probably better to look at the situation/motivations like you did. to see if it fit his character. i'll keep an open mind to this next time i watch the movie
thanks for sharing a contrary opinions. appreciate it!! =)

i was curious if you were going to watch this. I feel like there will be good cross-over between the OA fans and the Discovery fans
and i'm seeing similar responses online. just like the OA, people seem to either really like or be really put off by this movie
i happen to be on TeamTheDiscovery and TeamTheOA tho =)
i'm glad to see you are, too, Keisha!!
And I'm still overdue for OA videos. here;s my latest update. so my channel subs has nearly doubled since i started doing Game of Thrones vids. so from now until the end of season 7 (late summer), im tyring to do a Game of Thrones video as 1 out of every 2 or 3 videos so that I don't alienate my new subscribers. Im trying to keep growing =)
So that why i keep postponing the OA analysis unfortunately.
but this is my new tenative plan for this week
Today: GoT video (havent chosen a topic.. which is a bad sign because i usually need more than a day to turn around a video if im starting from scratch (no prior research on the internet, books, and episodes). so this might roll in to tomorrow
      but optimistically:
Tommorrow: 2 easy OA videos. "why did she leave the doors open" and "can the OA REad" or something like that. basically, I see those comments pop up a lot, so ill make a video to try to address what we know and the various theories/interpreations for those 2
Saturday: The Discovery "What you Missed + Easter Eggs" - im pretty pumped for this. remember when he was sitting there and Isla explained the loops... we saw 4-6 examples of de ja vouz and what not (pulls, holding head, "you look familiar", etc). i have a list of 25 different signs so far. and i plan on watching again to find more. so that one will be fun. but i have it booked as "saturday" for that reason i mentiond above. im trying not to lose my Game of Thrones subs, so ill do another Got video in between those 2 OA ones and this 2nd Discovery one
but with that said, I still want to do a full rewatch and theory video of the OA. and when i do, i am going to go through every comment you ever wrote here. I cant recall specifically what it was, but i know there was something u said once that i DEFINITELY wanted to highlight to people (and give u credit of course)
so yeah. Ill; do another GoT after the 2nd Discovery vidoe, but the plan would be for an OA followup after that (earlt to mid next week =) im pretty pumped bc i havent watched it fully through since i made those videos a couple months ago. im excited =)

i've seen a couple people say that!
I'm a huge Brit MArling fan, as writer, actress, and most importantly, as a person. she seems like a total Gem to this world
but the actress here has her own cool story. I haven't listened to as many interviews of her as I have of Brit (at least not yet), but she does a bunch of charity work, so that's winning in my book. When people ask me what my goal is, I say that i Am an aspiring philanthropist. well Rooney Mara IS a philanthropist, of both her time and wealth =)
here are 2 excerts from wikipedia:
      (1) Mara is also known for her charity work and oversees the charity Uweza Foundation, which supports empowerment programs for children and families in the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya, one of the largest slums in Africa.
      (2) Mara was born and raised in Bedford, New York, a town in Westchester County.[3] Mara's mother's family founded the Pittsburgh Steelers and her father's family founded the New York Giants.[4] Her father, Timothy Christopher Mara, is the vice president of player evaluation for the New York Giants, and her mother, Kathleen McNulty (née Rooney), a part-time real estate agent.[5] She is the third of four children: she has an older brother, Daniel, an older sister, Kate, who is also an actress, and a younger brother, Conor.
I'm doing research on the cast and the writers, Justin Lader and Charlie McDowell. Everyone involved in this production seems to be a role model. So the story alone had me at hello (did i just say that? LOL im such a dork), but as I find out more about the people behind it, I am appreciating the work even more (just like the OA)

If that's true, then hell is right here on earth. Because I was born into a family of coke addicts and alcoholics, then married into a cult-minded family. I finally "escaped" at age 37. It's been a rough life. I hope to God I don't have to do it again. In fact, the only thing that got me through those awful years was the belief that it was all a test, and that once I "passed" the test(s), I would move on to something better. The thought of reliving what has been my life makes me feel a bit sick.
