      I think the actions of YS’s mom shaped her into that sociopathic serial killer. Without the brutal shaman rituals, YS never would have hated her mom and would have never killed her. We saw that her relationship with SY in the beginning was real sweet and genuine which shows that she was capable of empathy at some point. Also if YS was a psychopath or sociopath from the begining, she would have never helped SY by saving her dad because that was a pretty caring move considering she would have been punished harshly if she got caught. Unlike a psychopath who is born that way, a sociopath is shaped by their environment and we saw that she took on extreme sociopathic tendencies/characteristics after killing her mother which proves that it was the environment that fucked her up. TLDR: YS’s mom caused all this

    The police report said multiple personality disorder. I think the phone doesn’t exist and she is both people. Think about it. They both are the same age. They both like the same music. they both live in the same house. They both knew about the hidden room. She had no memory of the serial killer girl in the future even though she supposedly met her in the past. The phone scene might just be her alternative personality remembering things differently from her current self.

      I was going more on the route of ptsd I think that sy suffered from ptsd from the events of the childhood so she remembers parts of what happens but then her mind continues to make up things that didn't like driving with her dad and her family eating strawberry part of it also might revolve around the guilt she had the phone is what her mind makes and is part of her wistful thinking to change things in the past her talking to killer was also her mind trying to remember things but remembering it differently the ending credit showing that her trapped in that chair is the portrayal of herself in her mind to her she is still stuck in that traumatic time to when she was tourchured. Notice that in the scene when her parents were alive she had a dress on similar to when she was happy in her childhood her hair is longer and the house seems like it's in a fantasy she also gives off a very innocent vibe and then slowly as things start to unravel we see her hair back to short and her clothes to when it first started at the beginning of the movie

If that happens then she definitely died back then because thats how the timeline works in the movie. Maybe the director put it to mess with our minds.

    • @Alfnty

      Have you noticed the scar on YS's throat? Maybe the present YS got that on her first encounter with SY's Mom. So maybe, just maybe, he thought of a better idea or better way to prevent that from happening and just ride along falling, then playing dead, etc. on the second encounter which is her young self who she called to warn. Then afterwards, proceed on killing SY's Mom in a more cautious way where she is able to avoid severe injuries etc. Just maybe.

  • @user-yr1dz5pp5i
    @user-yr1dz5pp5i 3 ปีที่แล้ว +210

    I don't think Young Sook had to 'track' Seo Yeon's mother down and kill her and then 'track' down Seo Yeon and abduct her. They were already in the house with her when she regained consciousness. My guess was that both Young Sook and the mother survived the fall and that while Young Sook was unconscious and flatlining, the present timeline involved Seo Yeon living with her alive mother. However, when Young Sook regained consciousness in 1999 she killed the mother and then kept Seo Yeon trapped in the house. And then the present timeline changed so that the mother disappeared and Seo Yeon was trapped in the chair again.

      that's impossible because if the young SY was captured by YS then she would never have grown up like the main protagonist did, so the older SY would never have been able to save YS from getting killed by the shamen in the first. Remember that the past changes the future, so if your theory is true, the whole movie would vanish because SY never grew up as a normal person but was killed when she was likely still a child.

    GUYS HEAR ME OUT! There was no strawberry farmer at all! It was just her imagination. What SY saw when she went to see if the strawberry greenhouse was still there, was just the remnants of the greenhouse gas explosion that happened on Dec. 31st 1999 at Hwasoon-gun at 5:00 pm. The same greenhouse where SY tricked YS to go and get the knife. The phone call never existed at all.
    Possible evidence to this:
    1) That scene where YS was driving SY's dad's car and when she pulled over, the strawberry man's truck was there meaning that YS went to the place where the strawberry greenhouse aka where the greenhouse gas explosion happened.
    2) It puzzled me why the 2 policemen who visited YS's house after the strawberry man got murdered didn't see his truck in front of YS's house. That day he was distributing his strawberries to his neighbors, he couldn't have possibly carried so many boxes of strawberries at such a long distance so he must have brought his truck with him. YS couldn't have driven the car back to the strawberry farm seeing how she barely managed to even drive SY's dad's car. So this one doesn't add up thus, can only be explained that this was just all in SY's imagination. She created a persona that could go back in time to save her dad and that is YS because she couldn't cope with the fact that it wasn't her mom who killed her dad but it was her. The part where the police man looked at YS medical record was probably SY's medical record. SY has Borderline Personality disorder, a person who experiences paranoia and disassociation.
    Which explains the ending where we see SY trapped in the basement. That scene depicts that she is fighting with herself, in her mind. She doesn't know what is real and what is not anymore. She experiences paranoia where she thinks another person is "threatening her" when in reality it was just her all along.

      Here's my view:
      First the movie showed that she survived the fall. The graveyard scene happened, so it appears that time went by just fine after the incident, but then what happened to the killed that's still alive? She ran away and waited for the right time, so she could use the phone again. She even told her past self to keep the phone on her just in case. She's waiting until the right time to call back to her past and then not get thrown off that balcony. Once she does, the present changes. The mom disappears, because she dies in the past. The main character stays captive, hence that last scene.

      @MHGFTW the movie just made a huge mistake, yes by the end she survived the fall therefore she should be alive and protagonist and her mom either dead or escaped so how did she call herself before that happened, the movie's entire premise is about time going in one direction, there's no way she could prevent the fall from the future the same way she can't bring the protagonist father because the day he died has passed

Cuz there are so many things to figure out like how a phone can connect past and future, how SY's mother and YS have scars and the most important thing in movie is that, at 42:50 the stepmother knew the future of YS and in the next scene SY wakes up as she had a bad dream which is connected to the previous scene of stepmother? What is connection of that stepmother's moment with SY's waking up with frightedness? And as we all know the confusing ending which needs to be exposed too.

    After reading discussions, I’m starting to think the post-credit ending is the “real” timeline.
    1999 villain calls 2019, and instead of SY, 2019 villain picks up the phone, warning her to “keep the phone close, and we can solve anything”. 2019 villain warns 1999 villain the cop and mom is coming.
    1999: Fight with mom happens (explains the gash on both necks), both fell off balcony. Villain might have fallen unconscious or significantly hindered from fall injury. After a time gap, villain kills the mom, and kidnaps child SY to lock her up in basement forever
    Simultaneously in 2019, villain vanishes before she could kill SY in the abandoned house. This is because if the 1999 villain survived, this timeline would be impossible to exist. SY would never be in the house, because she would have been locked in the basement forever, and the entire timeline of the movie would never have existed, because SY would always be locked up.(paradox right here, because if SY was locked up forever, she wouldn’t have been able to save the villain from being murdered by the shaman stepmom... which means she wouldn’t be locked up in the first place, because the villain would be dead before she could kill anyone). The wholesome ending we saw where her mom is alive is due to the time gap of 1999 villain falling unconscious (remember the two timelines are simultaneous, nothing stops) so it was filled by a temporary timeline where the mom didn’t die and SY wasn’t locked up, yet.
    Another plot hole is... why is no one searching the house. Why is no one looking for the dead cop. Is Korean police not allowed to search suspicious houses? Judging by how everything happened at the house, villain never moved or went into hiding. How does the villain get money? To afford all those fridges? Pay the bills? Avoid the police?!
    TLDR: if post credit ending is the true timeline, there are so many paradoxes and plot holes.

    • @pavlovafrogs
      @pavlovafrogs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If we wanted to avoid the paradox, i suggest that maybe 1999 youngsook did not kidnap 1999 soyeon after murdering her mother but she kidnapped her in 2019 timeline progressed at the cemetery. But still, a lot of plotholes can still be found either way.

    • @deadstylz
      @deadstylz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      My theory is that there are 2 alternate endings. IT depicts how the audience sees it. If you want to see the ending in the antagonist's (villian) perspective or the protagonist's (hero) perspective. The good ending is where both the mom and the daughter survives. The murder hit her head and died. Everything is good and all. While in the bad ending, the murder survives, while the mom dies and the daughter is kidnapped. The directors of the film likely wanted to put two alternate endings for the audience to choose which one they prefered and which one they liked better. I would prefer the good ending more than the bad ending. But everything still makes sense. This is why this film is an amazing thriller and suspenful piece.

    • @deadstylz
      @deadstylz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you're asking those questions, you're mainly leaning towards the bad ending, where the murder survives. The murder likely covered up the evidence like she did for the rest of the film but it's up to the audience to decide. We don't know what happens next. Thats why the bad ending is so intresting and makes the audience curious. While in the good ending, where the mother and daughter survives, It baiscally brings a resolve to the issue. The murder dies and nothing murdurous is happening. We would most likely see graves of the strawberry man, dead police officer, and her dad. Basically its 2 alternate endings. (good ending vs bad ending). The filmakers wants the audience to decide which one you like better. The one where the mom survives, or the one where the murder survives?

    This is my summarised take of the storyline
    When present girl gave evidence information to past killer, the past killer now managed to stay out of jail and grew to an adult. But that timeline probably has the same incident where the mother and policeman visited the past killer or maybe this incident was implanted into the present killer mind when the timeline was created.
    When the past killer called the phone to check on the status of the evidence information, the present killer answered the phone and gave tips to past killer like telling her to keep phone with her at all times. That was why the past killer placed the phone next to her.
    When past killer and mother fell to the ground, they were just injured. The mother managed to run away with the small girl for a few hours. During this few hours, the present girl was running to police station and then to the cemetery where she saw her surviving mother with the fighting scars.
    But the past killer at this point also woke up and tracked down the mother and the small girl. She killed the mother and kidnapped the girl. In present day, the mother vanished and the present girl woke up in captivity

    In my perspective, the director decided to show us the 2 possible endings of the story, the good and the bad ending. Especially the actual "key" which leads to one of the 2 possible endings is the phone. I noticed that in the good ending, SY from the present is the one who got to the phone first(which was in the basement) and talked to her mother when they were both locked in YS's room, afraid to be killed by SY. But in the bad ending, YS is the one who reached the phone first and tied YS to that torture chair or whatever it is called(this makes us understand that in the bad ending, SY didnt even talk to her mother through the phone and YS warned her past self and survived). Basically what changed the present is the phone and who reached to it first, simple as that. Although I think that the bad ending was more likely to happen in the story, because when I saw SY's mother disappearing in the end(the scene they were in the graves) , SY didn't even react and kept walking, and also if you noticed they were walking to the opposite direction of their home(mom came from the opposite side of the one that they left and both just left to nowhere which is probably their death). So yeah... It is still confusing to me but that is how I would describe the ending....

  • @ralphmanimbo803
    @ralphmanimbo803 3 ปีที่แล้ว +69

    i feel like the “ending” after the credits scenes is not true, it was just an “imaginary alternate ending.” it doesn’t align with the actual ending (soyeon and her mom being alive). i feel like the movie just wanted the audience to see an alternate ending where youngsook win. it couldn’t be the actual ending bcos calls can only be made by the ppl from the past and not the present. with that ending, the present youngsook was the one who called the past youngsook and warned her. so with the “alternate ending” in the credit scenes, we would assume that youngsook was prepared and was able to kill both soyeon’s mother and the police. reason why soyeon’s mother in the present disappeared. BUT AGAIN, THIS IS AN ALTERNATE ENDING. bcos youngsook in the present disappeared when she was about to kill soyeon bcos she died from the fall. if she didn’t die from the fall... WELL IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE.

    I watched this on netflix today and this is my personal explanation about the movie. I think it all started when she was a young girl, she got traumatized by how her psychopath neighbor killed her father in front of her and how she was tortured.
    She suffers from post traumatic disorder and couldn't move on from her past. The after credits shows that she is sitting in the same chair in the same house where she was tortured as a young girl, it symbolizes how she was trapped in tgat scene and find it difficult to move on in life.
    Everything is just in her mind. It is kinda similar to the movie "uninvited", but this movie didn't really showed us the twist of the story at the end, instead it just let us choose which one we want to believe in.

    I personally believe the extra scene at the end was the filmmaker showing an alternate ending to the movie. If you look at it, present-day YS swung a knife at SY to kill her, but she survived bc the past YS died. If YS happened to still be alive after she fell off the ledge, then present-day YS would have carried thru with the knife swing and SY would have been dead at that moment.
    Also, both of the endings could not have happened simultaneously because its either the mom lives, or YS lives. It can't be both

      no. i dont think its that way. so there are 2 points in time and both are on say one thread and both points are always at a perfect time distance. if something changes, the points don't change, only the thread changes. so when past ys put boiled water on sy, it hurt sy in the present.
      so, what happened there was when present ys threw the knife at sy, the same time the past ys and sy's mom fell. so, because of that fall present ys got hurt. that hurt of the fall affected the present ys that's why she wasnt able to kill. she did not vanish as shown in movie. but simply went and hid or struggled and ran away and then came back fully healed and kidnapped sy

      Also another thing to consider, if past ys survived the fall and it turns out she was just laying there in pain, wouldn't it make sense that the mom would have gotten help and police would come and arrest ys? This would cause ys to be unable to kidnap sy in the future? That is why I believe the two alternate endings actually lie on different timelines or "threads"

    Yes. Exactly what I thought. And the young killer after the fall, managed to track down the girl and the mother within some hours. These were the same hours that the present girl spent running to the police station and then to the cemetery where she met the surviving mother with the scars of the fight. But very soon, the young killer murdered the mother and kidnapped the young girl. Hence in present day, the mother disappeared and the girl reappeared in captivity

    The post credit scene is real because before the post credit, Old YS was already warning younger self of the policeman and SY's mum.
    I read ppl said it's not possible for old YS to warn her younger self of her possible death because she has no knowledge of the visit from the policeman and SY's mum.
    Here's the reason how old YS knows about the visit. She had the policeman's notebook which mentioned about their visit. Remember when the policeman came to investigate about the missing strawberry guy by going to younger YS's house? If you watch that scene again you will notice that younger YS took notice of the policeman with the notebook by checking out his name tag.
    Now that she is older she is just waiting for SY to come into her timeline for the cordless phone to ring so she can intercept and warn her younger self. Also, take notice that after warning her younger self, she immediately leaves the house because she knew SY was there in her timeline due to her cordless phone ringing from the past. She pretended to go out so that SY would feel safer waiting for the cordless phone to ring so she can warn her mum (since she saw the notebook writes "used cordless phone" when she was outside the house) only to attack her from behind later on.
    Old YS knew whem to come back in the house cause she too like SY read her notebook which writes "used cordless phone "
    Now, how can there be two notebooks you asked? Because the one in SY's hand is a notebook she brought from the previous timeline. And the one old YS has is from the current timeline.
    Hope that helps you to understand the movie a bit more.

    My guess is that "Young-sook" and Seo-yeon's mother never died from the fall! They both survived and were unconscious at first. The mom woke up and dailed 911. After she made the call, she went upstairs to grab her daughter and they went to go hide somewhere in the house until the cops and the ambulance arrived. While they were waiting and hiding, "Young sook" awakened from her coma and ran away from the house; to avoid getting arrested." A few months later; they healed and recovered! Everything returned back to normal and they lived happily together, but just when things were going great...."Young sook" came back for revenge! She killed the mom and kidnapped "Seo yeon" so she could torture her again....which would explain why the mom disappeared while they were walking down the street at the end of the movie and the reason why "Seo yeon" was tied to a chair and panicking! Somewhere in the past before she became an adult; "Young sook" came back to get her and when it happened; it changed the present! I believe that "Seo Yeon" was held hostage and tormented from the time she was kidnapped by "Young sook"; all the way to the time she became an adult in the present age! She spent the rest of her childhood and her adulthood; being abused by "Young sook"... She abused her the same way her mother did to her. That happy sweet ending we saw was basically what would've been "Seo yeon's" future if "Young sook" would've died from the fall and did not awaken anymore...
    This pretty much talks about everything! But now let me elaborate on the part when "Young sook's" future self called her old self in the past... I think maybe she wanted to make additional alternations! Perhaps she had more evil plans; other than what she had already done. Killing the mom and imprisoning "Seo Yeon" wasn't good enough for her....

    Timeline 8A: The Call Ending Graveyard Scene Explained
    In this timeline, Seo-yeon’s mother falls over with Young-sook in the past. While the mother survives, Young-sook dies. In the future, Seo-yeon finds that the old Young-sook who was moments away from killing her doesn’t exist and the house has gone back to being deserted. Her consciousness has now moved to Timeline 8A. There are no refrigerators which means Young-sook never began her killing spree. Seo-yeon meets her mother at her dad’s grave, and the two of them walk away happily. But …
    Timeline 8B: The Call Ending Chair Scene Explained (Mid Credit Scenes)
    In this timeline, thanks to the warning Young-sook has received from her older self, she takes corrective actions to ensure that she survives the fall. While not shown in the movie, Young-sook appears to have recovered and later found and killed Seo-yeon’s mother. This is why the mother disappears as the two of them are walking away. Young-sook has also kidnapped Seo-yeon and retained her as a hostage in the house’s basement. This way, there is nothing more Seo-yeon can do to jeopardize Young-sook’s path of mass murder. The film ends as Seo-yeon’s consciousness jumps into this nightmarish Timeline 8B.
    In the ending of The Call, we come to realize that the shaman lady, Young-sook’s stepmother, was right about the deaths that Young-sook will cause. She tries to avert it by killing her. But fate had it designed such that a phone call to the future allows for Young-sook to escape death time and over and unleash her darkness.

    At first, the movie seem flawed because the mom shouldn't be alive at all in the present if the killer had survive the fall. But if you think deeper. I believe the movie was correct on how the mom blinked out of existence after the killer had survive the fall. Take the dad for an example. the dad was alive in the present and only blink out of existence after the killer killed him. Meaning in some other past reality, the killer never kill the dad, that is why he was alive in the present day. Same go to the mom, in some other past reality, the killer didn't survive the fall, so she still exist in the present. But since the killer received a phone call from the future killer. She was prepared and survived. And kill the mom after a couples of hours after the fall. At the point when the killer received the phone call from the future killer, the mom's fate and the future was unclear and play out as time go by in the past.

    Seriously one of my new favorite movies ever. It’s actually not confusing as it seems and you did a fantastic job pointing that out. The past can continuously be altered by YS towards SY, but people don’t understand that changes only happen after they actually are made by YS, so that’s why at first it seemed like a happy ending but then at some point off screen YS in the past killed the mom of SY and kept SY in the past as a prisoner, following in the footsteps of her evil step mom. If you notice SY at the very end is wearing a white gown just like Past YS did while living as a prisoner with her are mom. Also to note, the step mom wore mostly all black clothing and YS at the end was wearing all black just like her. Now I know she’s gothic/grunge girl but still it’s a lot to connect from her past issues

    Ending Explained:
    Everything that happened in the past, every second and every act of past would would affect the present in the same time 20 years ahead now. That explains why the red message on the floor. When Young-sook in the past wrote the message, the reality in present was the same (message appeared), but when Young-sook erased it, the reality in present was changed at same time.
    Now, the reason why Young-sook vanished is because Young-sook in the past at that time(when the mother pushed her) didn't make it (so in the present SY met her mom). After few hours she woke up Young-sook killed SY's mom and caught SY. That's why, in the present SY jumps into reality where she has been kidnapped by Young-sook.
    Baseline is Young-sook might have flat lined for sometime, till which SY got chance to run to the police and visit her Dad's grave.
    But eventually Young-sook won. WE CANNOT CHANGE OUR FUTURE WITHOUT AFFECTING A WHOLE LOT OF SHIT !
    So basically, we have an alternate ending version. Very clever of director to end in such a note. The last few seconds increased the complexity by multiple folds. Great movie. Absolute Thriller.

      This dont add up .... if YS does end up locking up SY that means SY would never get the chance to save YS from getting murdered by her step mom so according to that logic YS would be dead and SY would be free also the reason why YS dissapeared when almost killing adult SY wasnt because she died from falling but because she would have never been fighting with SY (again shes locked up in the basement )

      @@al8773 Same thoughts here... because if Seo-Yeon was locked up at the basement, the first call should have never happened, therefore completely removing the entire plot of the movie...so I'm still left confused here.
      Because if others say Seo-Yeon and Young-sook are the same person (multiple- personality disorder) then there would be no father to save, Young-sook would be eventually killed by her shaman mom and we still wouldn't have a story...

    I think I’ve got it.... try to stay with me 😂
    When YS and the mom were thrown over the balcony, they both lived. YS disappeared from the present with SY because the path she was on has changed.
    In the end credits, we see the older, present day YS calling her younger self. This YS we see, is the same YS that was thrown over the balcony with the mom 20ish years earlier (again, in which they both survived *movie shows flashback of a bloody YS waking up after being thrown off the balcony*). She (YS) waited 20ish years - to call her younger self on that phone and warn herself about the cop and the mom showing up. She tells her younger self to “keep the phone,” this will prevent present SY from warning her (past) mom.
    The mom and cop dies in the past and young SY is taken prisoner. Altering the future again. This is why the mom flickers and disappears in the present and we see SY tied up in the basement.
    I think YS will always have the upper hand, she can always alter the future/present if she is alive. All she has to do is wait for the right time to call back to her younger self to warn her of what is to come (however time travel works on that phone)

      This was my same understanding 👌🏽 she survived the fall...waited the 20 years...to call her past self and change the future which is how SY remained in the chair (cause mom and cop couldnt rescue her)

    I was really taken by the film. Reminded me of the Dennis Quaid/ Jim Cavievel film of 2000, "Frequency".
    I thought that writer/ director Chung-Hyun Lee's script was very tight, and created a nice conceit, avoiding the parallels that shouldn't be plausible in exactly the way you mentioned.
    It is a roller coaster ride, and as tight as a new catcher's mitt.

    Wait, this doesn’t make sense. Please hear me out.
    When present YS tries to kill SY, YS disappears because the past young YS falls from upstairs and dies.
    Movie countless times shows that if a character dies in the past then they disappear in the future (present).
    Meaning the scenes from post credit doesn’t make sense. It shows that past YS waking up from the fall then the future YS should have never disappeared in the first place.

    • @Lili-cc7pz
      @Lili-cc7pz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What if she didn’t die. What if the true timeline is that she survived, and captured SY as a kid, forever locked in the basement. That would make the present timeline impossible, so YS disappears.. and so does SY. The entire timeline disappears. The only plot hole is that There is a bit of time lag where SY got to meet her surviving mother, but as the ending reveals, she is locked in the basement. Maybe the time lag is due to the fact that YS was injured from the fall so she passed out/had trouble moving as quickly to kill the mom and tie up kid SY

    • @MusicLuv80
      @MusicLuv80 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Lili-cc7pz It is simple. The rule in this film was when present character disappears that mean their past self had died. YS being injured and waking up from that fall should have never made present YS disappear in the first place. Some say it is because YS passed out but that doesn't matter at all. YS still surviving should have never made present YS disappear.
      If a person had their dream job interview following month at 5 pm, it doesn't matter they fell and injured themselves, they will go to that interview at 5 pm because that person already had plenty of time to heal. Same thing. YS fell and yes she was injured but she probably healed in few weeks but she had many years before she was at this room with SY trying to kill SY. So there is no reason the present YS disappearing.

      You got it wrong. YS did not disappear. SY got moved from her current situation and location to a new one because the events that happened in the past caused this. This has happened before in the film without anyone dying. The fact that SY's mom jumped off the balcony and brought YS changed the present SY's situation and that is why she is moved, not because YS died or disappeared. Then, after YS wakes up from the fall, she calls her present self to again change the present and learn how to kill SY's mother and capture SY. This is why SY is again moved from walking with her mother to the chair in the basement, because the call between past and present YS changed the present once again.

    There is no double ending! When SY woke up in the room with the fridges, she missed the first call. 2019 YS picked up and reminded 1999 YS to change the reality. It explains why there was a scene when they were fighting to get the phone. 1999 YS killed her mom and police, continuing killing people and kept SY in the basement all this time. She released her in exchange to force her doing exactly what to do when she picked the phone from 1999 YS for the avoid 1999 YS being killed by her step mother. It explained why she was not faded at the end (in the cemetery means she is free) even though her mom was. Of course if we ignore logics of why YS never get caught by the police for the past 20 years.
