Why does my bike make a clicking sound when I am not pedaling?

  • In this video, I had the opportunity to cut open a rear hub and show you how it works.
    It is a commonly asked question on why your bicycle makes a ticking noise when you are coasting and I hope the video helps explain why.

    It's so cool how anyone can just view and learn about things like this on TH-cam for free from people like you that have taken the time to both show and explain all of this. I guess that makes me sound like an "old head" but seriously this was an excellent explanation and demonstration of how the clicking sound happens, what goes on and the design behind it. I have loved bicycling for years both casual and on a road bike and it amazes me how complex a seemingly simple bicycle is. I can't believe there are actually people that gave you a thumbs down on this video. I think you did a great job! Thanks!!!

      I'm gonna change my perspective of the sound thanks to you! I have a lot of hearing sensitivity and all I could focus on was each click being so loud, I never thought of it as calming but realized, you know, I can change it to that through associations with music, feelings, and words. Riding always feels so freeing.

    My Rocky Mountain Instinct Alloy 30 2022 new makes the pawl ticks that are way loud! TICK TICK TICK!.......annoying! My wife's bike is not quite as loud and she has the Instinct Alloy 10.
    A year or so has gone by and mine doesn't click as loud as it use to thankfully.
    The engineering on these hubs looks so intricate that it is a wonder how they made these things many years ago. Obviously not as intricate so many years ago i think, but a search told me that the freewheel hub was invented in 1869. That is amazing!

    I have had several 10 speeds that have made that sound and I actually like it. I recently purchased a 10 speed, it's an older one, from what I could find it's an early 1970's. It's a Nishiki Olypiad. It was really dirty and I had to replace tires, tubes, rim straps to protect tubes. Spent a week doing some detail cleaning and ordered a cassette removal tool do I can take the wheel apart and clean it real nice. I noticed today it has a bit of side to play in it. I really like the fact it came with quick releases on front and rear wheels. The play and remembrance that there is no clicking sound brought me here. Do when my tool arrives to remove the cassette, having access to free wheel is there a lock ring or something keeping the hub attached to wheel? Just trying to get an idea of what I'm getting myself into and if I'll be able to possibly restore that clicking sound.

  • @rottnlove

    I have a french road bike and probably one of my favorite things about it is that it is silent at all stages of pedaling or coasting. I can be riding right next the person I am riding with (my front tire by their rear before it) and unless they turn to look if I'm there they wouldn't know.
    Their bike makes enough noise for both of us.
    My favorite ride is an 11mi stretch of paved bike path between two cities and i can easily pass who I'm riding with and then I can ride in complete silence. We both have head/tail lights on our bikes. Mines the original 12v theirs is battery. We ride mostly at night because i am unable to perspire, so i get overheated just standing in the sunlight, that makes a 22 mi round trip in daylight impossible. In middle of the Midwest it seems like even though we both have our headlights on my bike is silent so I disturb the wildlife left but they hear them coming and have about wrecked them a few times buy suddenly running out in front of them. Animals react to me as well however they don't run out in front of me. I don't want to hit a deer or a raccoon in my car let alone while I'm on a bicycle.
    It's I'm sure so quiet because i have packed the hubs with high temp red grease because that is what I have to use in the hydrologic commercial paper cutter, I figured if it works to keep a 44-inch razor sharp knife blade from jamming up it should be able to keep up couple inch hub from jamming up. Guess it was just a bonus it made everything silent. The bike was given to me 2017 but the person who gave it to me brought it to the United States when they moved here from the Netherlands in early 80s and they have not ridden it since. When they gave it to me it still has the nipples on the tires I have since written those off now, but I'm still on the same tires from late 70s.

    • @westelaudio943
      @westelaudio943 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@heysaras
      Any old single speed coaster brake hub. Some are still being made but they tend to be bad quality. There were some multi speed hubs with silent freewheeling mechanisms like cone clutches back in the day (50s and older) but those are hard to find and expensive. Any hub can be used on any bike if it has the right amount of spoke holes. Also keep the width in mind.

    Actually the noise your hearing is the Paws switching between points and landing on the next point etc etc, the springs are to make sure the paws have enough strength to move and engage the next point when they pass over each point and lock in place when you pedal forward.

    • @mykolasstankevicius6330
      @mykolasstankevicius6330 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well if the louder soud occurs when you are coasting at a higher speed it is absolutely normal, but if the sound is more like a little bang, metaly pop or a grinding sound, that can indicate a broken pawl of some other issue in your drivetrain.

  • @MrKissmekitty

    Thank you for explaining! What does it mean when my normal clicking sound changed (slightly quieter) after I removed the wheel and put it back on? I’m wondering if I did something wrong.

    • @johnlamarca9439
      @johnlamarca9439 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably got quieter because the new wheel hasn't worn out enough to change the shape of the connecting parts yet. It's new and has its original shape and pressure where the pressure is supposed to be. When things get off in shape in any mechanism running it makes a different sound... Quieter meaning running properly? Or Noisier means running properly? Usually quieter means better, but depending on the device... Some devices are deliberately designed to make noise... Sorry for babbling on explanation...

    The noise is not from the spring in the pall or from the movement of the pall up and down by itself. It’s from the palls springloaded action gliding and then hitting onto the drivering grooves thats making the noise, there is no noise from the palls by themselves.

    I loved your video! Very nice explanation! Now I understand why my bike makes such a loud clicking noice.
    I have a question, are you allowed to add more grease/oil to your bike? (The oil you mentioned in the video.) If so, what is the grease/oil called?

      It depends. Most hubs play nice with extra grease or oil, but you need to check with the manufacturer. I usually like to use Dumond Tech, Pro-x free hub grease.

    Hello. Thank you for your videos. One question. I have an BMC Amp city bike. Since day one i hated the noisy sound. The dealer said it was normal and that actually meant it was a good hub. But just because of that ive been for one and a half year with this noisy hub that i just hate. I do believe is a DT 370. Is there anything i can do? I was so desperate that i was even thinking just to change the entire wheel set. I dont necesarelly need completely silent. But not that loud so i can enjoy my evening rides around my town. Please help me.

    I was looking for a source of a non normal single click per wheel revolution , sort of like a bad spoke , or maybe something on the hub that makes a click - tick sound , but can't be duplicated in the workstand with no weight on the wheel / hub …

      Stop by your local bike shop they should be able to figure out what the noise is
