Bicycle Freehub Noise, Clicking Sound, and Freehub Trouble Shooting

  • Freehub in your rear wheel (to which your cassette is attached) rarely fail but here are some signs that that you have problems that need immediate attention before they do fail!!
    Bicycle freehub consists of two part. One attached to the inside of the hub has spline teeth. The other side with the cassette has little levers or pawls that are spring loaded to push the pawls up. These springs are usually a c-clip spring that wapes around and keep the tension on the pawl. When you pedal, the pawls pushed up by the springs engage the teeth, engage the drivetrain and turn the wheel. When you freewheel, the pawls just rub against the teeth allowing the wheel to turn without engaging the cassette and drivetrain. Some freehubs reverse the spline teeth and pawls but all basically work the same. Sometimes the spring is a circle wire under tension.
    Free hubs are great and rearly fail. But when your freehub fails, you may find yourself spinning the pedals but the wheel doesn't turn. This is the extreme. However, freehubs may give problems requiring cleaning or refurbishing. Here a some tips for freehub trouble shooting:
    1. Freehub becomes very noisy with load clicking sound:
    a. Those cyclist who often ride in rain conditions or, when cleaning their bike, spray water directly at the freehub may wash away the lubricant from the pawls and springs. This can be dealt with by removing the freehub body and re-lube the pawls and springs.
    b. Those who ride in the dirt and mud (especially with a mountain bike) may also notice an increase in freehub noise as grim builds up under the pawls. Pick up the back of the bike and try turning the back wheel forward with touching the crank as though you were freewheeling. If the pedal also turns on its own, there is probably grim under the pawls. Or turn the crank backward as well as forward. If the wheel turns when you turn the crank backward also, there is probable grit under the pawls such that they do not close properly as they rub along the freehub teeth.
    2. Hesitation as you pedal: You turn the crank but the wheel seems to hesitate before turning. Broken or worn springs under the pawl or grim keeping the pawls from springing up to engage the freehub teeth may be the problem.
    3. Total freehub failure is noted when you are spinning the pedals but the rear wheel fails to turn.
    a. This may be the result of a broken C-spring, missing pawls or individual springs or broken freehub body.
    b. Another posibiltiy includes grit or grease holding the pawls in a closed (down) position so they do not interact with the hub splines.
    These problems can occur with a road bike freehub but are more often seen with a mountain bike freehub due to the more heavier use. Experiencing these problems require will require overhaul freehub, cleaning freehub and lubrication or replacing bicycle hub, usually by an experienced mechanic or bike shop. Thank you for this simple but illuminating explanation of what I believe is happening with a mountain I took on as a restoration project. Slowly I have had to disassemble, clean and repack every inch of this bike as it was used extensively by last owner in environment with some kind of invasive clay soil that is everywhere even inside the quill stem, seatpost tube and component. Its a 1991 Paramount with Deore XT and I have all the part sheets from shimano. Every time I think I am almost done there is a new surprise. Now it is a terrible noise despite having just repacked the rear hub. Looking forward to testing out the back pedal resistance but almost certain its a dragging or jammed pall. Glad I found this channel.

      That's quite and under taking. Was the noise there before repacking the rear hub? If it only happened after repacking, you may have too many or too few ball bearing or the hub is too tight. Also see our "noise" playlist:

      Look for the easy things first and give them a try before pulling apart the freehub (I assume it's a freehub, not a freewheel). Let me know how you make out. Regards, Tony

    I get a really loud crack sound from my rear hub under power just after coasting - not every time but between 5-10 times over 16 miles. The hubs clean but the pawls do look a little work down on the teeth, I'm going to replace them and I'm hoping that it's just the pawls and no the drive ring inside the hub - drive ring does look ok but the pawl teeth towards the bottom portion definitely look work back a little

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Working with the pawls inside the hub is tricky. Are you sure the "cracking sound" is not coming from the bottom bracket. Check the BB: th-cam.com/video/InW64uutftM/w-d-xo.html Also check the chainrings are torqued to specifications. Also when you replace the cassette you also torque the cassette: th-cam.com/video/qVzWQuHPz50/w-d-xo.html Let me know how it works so we can become more informed ourselves. Thanks and regards, Tony

    This is the information I was looking for because my old skyways on my BMX are turning the pedals. I’m from the 80s and Can’t remember what Freewill did back then I thought the pedals stayed stationary.
    I guess I’m good for a rebuild or a new one

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most, if not all, 1980 BMX have a freewheel that allows coasting (most are single speed freewheels). If, when you turn the rear wheel on a bike stand, the crank and pedals move, you have a problem with the rear freewheel that needs to be replaced. Very few BMX are fixed gear. Here's a reference on single speed vs fixed gear:

    I have a snapping sound on my new GT. Thought it was the bottom bracket but the bearings are fine. Seems like it's this issue. It snaps and a couple of times it has peddled foward a half a spin but then reengaged itself. I shouldn't have this on a bike less then 2 months old and riding on road n some trails. And I take really good care of my stuff!

    • @tony10speed

      I wonder if the chain is not engaging the chain rings properly until you start pedaling. I'd put it up on a repair stand and take a closer look as you shift and turn the pedals. Is the chain the proper "speed" for the bike (7, 8, 9, 10 speed)? Are the limiting screws properly set? Is the derailleur lined up parallel to the chainrings? Does this happen in all chainrings (unless you're running 1x) and all cogs? Snapping may occur when you are using the small chainring / small cog or large chainring / large cog. In a 1x (single chainring) it may occur at the extremes, the largest cog and/or smallest cog. Things to consider.

    Thank you sir! I was watching with interest and I learned something helpful but my problem is when the back wheel spins it hardly clicks only on 1 place (it gives much louder noise than the normal clicks) and when I am riding it’s moving the whole wheel and the whole bicycle. Thanks for the info. Can a DT-Swiss "free hub" be installed on to most/any hubs or do you need DT specific hub already? I own a 2018 GIANT Defy Advanced 3 and I'd like to change the rear free hub.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't install a freehub over another hub. Rather, the wheel is built around the freehub whose exterior has holes for the spokes. If you're interested in a new freehub, it's best to have someone built a new wheel with a new rim and spokes. They can build one specifically for the size and speed of the bike you have. You would need to consult your local bike shop.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure the rear wheel is on correctly by releasing the quick release (or axel bolts) and resetting the wheel. Next, take the chain off the small chain ring and place in on at the base of the seat tube on the bottom bracket. If the crank still doesn't turn, there's a problem with the bottom bracket that needs attention. If the crank turns find (without the chain) but you can not spin the rear wheel in either the forward direction / rear direction / or both, something has broken inside the freehub. In either case, your local bicycle store will need to overhaul one of the items. Let me know how you make out. Tony

    This is the best video on freewheel I ever seen. I have a question. Recently I washed my polygon premier 5 with water. After that I am hearing sound from freehub and bottom bracket. When I am moving cycle forward (without riding it) the paddles are moving forward also. What could be the problem and possible solution to this ?

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pick up the back of the bike by the saddle and with the other hand turn the wheel in the direction it would be it moving forward without pedaling (i.e., as if coasting). If the pedals move as the wheel turns (see the video), then you probably have a freehub problem. It is possible that the grease in the freehub was washed out when cleaning the bike. This may occasionally happen if you turn a high pressure hose of water directly at the hub. Another possibility is that the grease in the rear wheel bearings themselves get washed out. It would be advisable to have your local bike shop mechanic look at the freehub and the wheel bearings to see if either need to be overhauled and re-greased.
      When I wash my bike, I keep the hose on a low shower and not a high direct stream. If I'm going to use degreaser on my bike with disc brakes, I usually remove the rear wheel, wrap the disc brakes and pads with a baggie or clear wrap, degrease the drivetrain and wash with soap and water. I usually use soap and water only on the rear wheel. I also clean the disc brake rotor with rubbing alcohol.
      Hope this helps. Let me know how you do. Regards, Tony

      @@tony10speed dear Tony, thanks a lot for the reply. After experiencing this issue I sprayed Looplube chain wet lube on the chain and over the hub, so that it re-grease it. But the issue is as it is. I have to get it open. One last question, may I continue to use the cycle till I get it repaired or using it will damage the freewheel more ?

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rahulsony569 If you continue to ride it, you may cause more damage to the freehub or the wheel hub. When grease is washed out of the wheel bearings of the hub, you may get pitting of the bearing races and permeant damage as you cycle. The lubricant in both the freehub and wheel bearings are essential for smooth performance. I'd have some one look at it before you use the bike again.

      Note: One other video suggests removing the freehub and flushing away the grease to make it loader. I strongly recommend against this as do many others. The grease is there for a reason - to allow smooth movement of the pawls and decrease wear. If you're bike shop greased the hubs properly and they are quieter, leave them as is and accept the fact that you can listen for other cyclist or enjoy the birds and wild life about you. Anyway, for what it's worth, I agree with GCN above and leave the hubs nice and quiet.

      Although the DT Swiss might be easy to grease, be cautious. Some freehubs may be difficult to service and re-assemble. Best done by someone with experience such as the mechanic in your local shop. Note: some freehubs are louder then others (even when brand new). This does not mean the freehub is broken or bad, just the nature of the freehub. The new 11 speed DT Swiss R-7000 tends to be louder the the corresponding new Shimano 6800. The old Shimano Ultegra and Dura Ace FH-6600 and FH-6700 hubs are some of the quietest but come only in 9 or 10 speed and are difficult to find and probably wont serve your needs. There maybe something to the saying: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

      @@jcoyle231 So, after the freehub was overhauled there was no sound. But the noise came back. When I grasp the freewheel from the teeth top and bottom I can move it torwards me and away from me maybe about a mm like there is a gap...The knock only happens when I ride and pedal. When on rack...Its like when I pedal there is enough pressure to move the freewheel and create the knock. Only happens on speed 5 and higher. Anyone have this before...Help. driving me crazy! Any solutions:(

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should not be able to move the cassette (freehub) or a freewheel a mm back and forth. Two possibilities:
      1. The cassette on the freehub (or freewheel on the hub) is not greased and tightened. See:
      th-cam.com/video/RyX00hPyB34/w-d-xo.html
      2. You may be missing a spacer that allows for use of 9, 10 or 11 speed cassette when placed on a freehub. Check with your local bike shop.
      Freewheels are found on old bikes and kids bikes. Most of todays road and mountain bikes of any worth are freehubs. Here is the difference between a freehub and freewheel:
      th-cam.com/video/3UuWAtEs3WI/w-d-xo.html
      If you are truely dealing with a freewheel, the freewheel itself can be lose or broken. See:
      th-cam.com/video/6C9_dvfQNP8/w-d-xo.html
      Hope this will help you find the problem. Regards, Tony

    I had my road bike fully serviced about 6 months ago (including changing cassette and chain) and it's been running fine until about a month ago when the rear wheel started 'skipping' (hesitating). This feels like the chain slipping (but I'm sure it isn't that). The problem has been increasing - is it the springs under the pawl? (Otherwise my bike is in excellent condition - always clean too!) Helpful advice will be appreciated. :o)

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you say hesitating, do you mean when you shift or while riding in the same chainring and cassette cog? Does the chain start jumping cassette cogs even if not shifting? Are all the components the same manufacturer? When speed chain are you using? Let me know so I can better answer your question. Regards, Tony

      @@George-sc4yh Check:
      1. Are all components and chain the same speed (10, 11 or 12), i.e, someone didn't replace a 10 speed chain with an 11 speed.
      2. No obvious wear to the drivetrain and check the chain for wear.
      3. Then it's most likely the freehub. Slipping can happen for a number of reasons, including worn ratchet, worn pawls, weak springs, or excessive accumulation of grease & grime within the freehub. Depending on the hub you have, a repair consists of either cleaning, rebuilding or replacing the freehub. Some freehubs are rebuildable, others are not and must be replaced as a unit. That said, it's often possible to extend the life of a non-rebuildable freehub by flushing out the old grease & gunk and regreasing. The mechanic at your local bike shop can almost certainly take care of this for you.

      It's the pawls riding over the catches that make noise. If you hub was previously "loud" and is now quiet, something is likely keeping them from dropping energetically into the catches. This may be old grease that has somewhat solidified, grime or possibly a broken spring inside the hub. Before you rear hub fails completely and you're stuck or unable to get home, I'd have your local bike shop disassemble your hub and inspect/clean/relube. Usually the pawls of the freehub riding over the freehub catches, while coasting, make noise. While pedaling, the hub is much quieter. I assume (correct me if I'm wrong) that you are referring to the fact that while coasting, the freehub no longer makes the usual clicking noise. If your hub was previously "loud" and is now quiet, something is likely keeping the pawls from dropping energetically into the catches. This may be dirt or old grease. Before you develop problems, I personally, would have your local bike shop take a look and overhaul the freehub (clean and apply new lubricant as needed).

    Cleaned my cassette & chain with hot soapy water then i threw the remaining water over the drivetrain. A mistake i think as the freehub is making cracking/grinding sounds even when im freewheeling😢Didn't think doing that would ruin the freehub but it seems like it has. Annoying.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually the freehub is well enough sealed that it should resist throwing water on it. Rather, you'd need to use a hose turned on full to blast to blow out the grease from the freehub. Anyway, first make sure the wheel is installed in the dropouts properly and the brakes (or rotor) doesn't rub. If all looks fine, it may still be the freehub or could be the wheel bearings had very little grease to begin with and the soapy water was just enough to wash out the grease (I've washed my bike and drivetrain many times but use a very light sprinkle from my hose. I also overhaul my hubs every couple of years and re-grease). Maybe it's time to visit your local shop to have a look. Don't blame yourself. This would only happen if your freehub or bearings were very very close to needing an overhaul and lubrication. Let me know how you make out since we can all learn from your experience.
