Bike Clicking When Pedaling

  • Clicking or bike creaks while pedaling or cycling can be annoying but also can mean an underlying mechanical problem. Noise can come from many components. Here are a few of the most common things to look for with a when we hear a click or ticking while pedaling but no noise while coasting and how to fix and eliminate the noise. We'll look at other causes of a noisy bike in our other videos including creaking, rubbing and squeaking bike noise.
    A. Once every pedal revolution (i.e., once every time the pedals make a full rotation):
    1. Clicking when in the big chainring: Have a friend hold the back of the bike up and turn the crank. Shift to the big chainring and smallest rear cog. Is the outer plate of the front derailleur arm hitting the crank arm? If so, shift to the small chainring and adjust by turning the outer limiting screw clockwise just an eighth of a turn.
    2. You may have a loose or creaking pedal, loose chainring bolts, loose crank fixing bolt, or loose bottom bracket. Check with your shop when you get home.
    B. Once every chain revolution (about every third time the pedals go around): Check the chain for a stiff link or bent or partially broken link. Have someone pick up the back of the bike while you turn the crank and shift to the smallest chainring and smallest cog to give your chain the most slack. Now pedal backwards slowly and look at the chain.
    1. If you note a stiff link, work the link by pushing on the chain from side to side to get it to "release" (see video Release a stiff link).
    2. If you find a bent or broken link and have a chain tool, the chain can be repaired, but, be careful not to ride in the big chain ring with the larger cogs now that the chain is shorter (or you'll lock-up the back derailleur and chain). Otherwise, time to call for help.
    C. About 8 or 10 times for each pedal revolution (a click): Pick up the back of the bike and spin the crank. Look at the rear derailleur jockey wheels (you know those small black wheels that are part of the rear derailleur). If the chain appears to jump on and off the jockey wheel, one of the teeth of the jockey wheel may be worn or broken. Check with your shop.
    D. Constant and Miscellaneous Noise:
    1. Is your wheel installed crooked? Check that the wheel is not rubbing against the frame's chain stays. Is one brake pad rubbing against the wheel rim. See brake rubbing above.
    2. Constant squeaking: Does your chain need oiling?
    3. Clicking from your front or back wheel unrelated to any of the above: Tighten the quick release (this will make it harder to close the lever).
    Most bike noise on a road bike or mountain bike can be prevented by proper bicycle maintenance, periodic lubrication of the chain and derailleur pivot points, greasing (or using anti-seize/carbon fiber compound) on bolts and seat post, bike cleaning especially after rain or muddy conditions, and repair or replacement of worn parts.

      I still hear the clicking sound. Repent of your deeds and Jesus will forgive you. Why are there unclean birds in Revelation 18:2 if all animals are clean? The Pharisees and most Jews saw the Gentiles as animals because they hated Gentiles ruling them. God has cleansed the Cornelius and other righteous Christian Gentiles so they are no longer common nor unclean. You need to learn more about Almighty Everlasting Father Jesus Christ the Lamb.
      Context is very important. Not every green herb is eaten. Poison oak and some other green herbs will kill you if you eat them. Satan is a creature of God and so are roaches. Will you receive Satan or eat roaches with thanksgiving? Lamb, beef, pigeon, dove, locust, grasshopper, fish with fins and scales, and all the clean beasts are sanctified by the word of God (Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Isaiah, etc) and prayer.
      Romans 14 is saying people that eat all things clean should not judge the herbivore vegetarians that eat herbs and the herbivores should not judge those that follow the law of clean beasts.

    VERY helpful. I have a bike with 7 gears (all in the rear), and I was getting 'about' one click per rev on any gear. After watching your video, I had a better understanding . My issue turned out to be the chain clipping/slipping as it kept trying to grab the next gear. Was tough to see because it would happen on the opposite side of the cassette depending on if the bike was upside down or not. A few spins of the nut on the derailleur cable and it evened out.

    I just got a brand new cruiser from Walmart, my left petal has been clicking from the inside of the pedal it seems on and off every turn of the pedal. I found this video and tried to tighten my pedal and wrong way and it loosed right away, so I tightened it pretty well and I hope this will fix the problem. I'll update soon :)

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If that doesn't solve the problem, it may be pedal bearing itself. Most of the Walmart bikes come from China and sometimes there assembly is a bit to be desired. One can replace the pedals for less then $10. The other thing to consider is the bottom bracket. Worked on a new Giant mtb. The bottom bracket was so thigh it was hard to pedal and much noise. Had to take the bottom bracket apart and re-assemble to the correct tightness. If you are using cleats on your shoes, check the cleats for wear or breakage. For me, that's a common cause of clicking or noise while pedaling. Finding and fixing bike noise is real detective work. Try one thing at a time, and if that doesn't work, move on to the next. Good luck Sherlock. Tony

    Funny, sort of. I was getting a noise with every pedal revolution on my 8 x 3 Shimano. Every gear did the same. Tried all your great tips and nothing changed. It turned out to be the seat post! I lifted the rubber telescope cover and added a few squirts of oil and noise is gone. It was my butt moving the seat post each way, lol. Fixed now and thanks.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been fooled by the same thing. On suspension seatposts, a squirt of oil will do the trick. Trying to tell where the noise is coming from is half the battle. Yearly, we service the seatpost to prevent squeaking and clicking:

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We'll start with the easy stuff first. Check that the cleat and pedal surface is not worn on the side that clicks. Also check that the chain is not hitting the derailleur cage and that the crank arm is not hitting the derailleur when you reach that point in your pedal stroke.
      Then take a look at the following video:
      th-cam.com/video/xn0bokygJ9c/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchand
      I can not rule out that the pedal bearings on that side are not worn. There's still the possibility the problem is the bottom bracket. See:

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are correct. The clicking noise you hear may not be from where you think. Start with the easier things first such as checking such things as an odometer magnet hitting a spoke or worn bike shoe cleats or worn pedals. Here are some other videos that may help:

    Thanks for the videos. They are very helpful. I have 12 speed MTB and lately it has some sort of grinding noise from the rear drive chain. This happens only when I am ridding and peddling hard. Is it derailer, cassette (notice some teeth worn out), or chain? Thank you for your help in advance.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A lot of writers here have suggested it’s your chain. That’s a good first thing to check with a chain indicator (unless it's relatively new). If you’ve cleaned your chain and cogs, your chain is properly lubricated (or you buy a new one), and you’re sure it’s not rubbing on anything, you can rule out chain.
      Next, fine tune the rear derailleur shifting (with the barrel adjuster) and make sure shifting is smooth and quiet. Check the pulley wheels and cassette for wear. If these are not the culprits, the only other thing that I’ve encountered which has caused a grinding noise when pedalling is an old, worn, cup-and-cone bottom bracket, but I suppose a cartridge bottom bracket could also wear down this way. If your bike has a cup-and-cone bottom bracket and it wears out, it’s best to replace it with a compatible cartridge bottom bracket if you can. It’s not difficult although you may need special tools to remove the cranks and the rings holding the bottom bracket in place. If you have those then you probably already know what you’re doing; if not, take your bike to your local bike shop for the repair.
      Also here's an interesting reference:

    Found my clicking in my rear wheel bearings. Chased that on around for a while😀. Another time it was my front wheel quick release. Always check the easy ones first. I do it while I ride. It’s by far the easiest by isolating the noise. First, pedal out of the saddle. It could be your seat. Second, put torque on you handlebars without pedaling. Pedal backwards. Try changing out your wheel set. Lots of easy thing you can do before getting a wrench out.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are absolutely right. I had a creaking coming from the front end. I noticed that when I put pressure on the handlebars (especially going up hill), heard creaking. On the flats when I took my hands off the handlebars, no creak. Took the handlebar clamp bolts out. Cleaned the handlebar clamp and handlebars. Applied Fiber Grip to the handlebar clamp (Loctite blue to the bolts) and replaced the bar and clamp. Torqued bolts to specs. No more creak. Paying attention while you ride can solve a lot of noise problems. Regards, Tony

    I was getting sporadic clicking on the flats, and much more frequent clicking when on the hills or while under high torque (off and on the saddle). This occurred while in the big and little ring. I resolved mine by replacing my pedals. I've read on various forums that Shimano released a bad batch of Ultegra PD-6800 (right side) pedals. And that's is likely what I had since I'm almost positive the clicking was loudest on the right side. So I upgraded to the new R8000's and clicking is now gone. I realize I could have pulled the axle and serviced it. But I wanted to upgrade anyhow since they are slightly lighter weight. It was a win-win decision for me. I got about 2 years worth of riding out of the PD-6800's before the click started. I hope this helps someone else out there as frustrated as I was with this issue.

    Tony is really great but....well funny I had 2 different instances with a click w each pedal stroke and neither covered here. The first time the actual pedal was malfunctioning and needed to be replaced. The second time the bottom bracket (the cylinder that goes through the bottom of the bike left and right of the pedals) had never been lubricated from the manufacturer and after a year of riding finally make a click sound but ONLY when I pushed with a bit stronger force....it was driving me crazy to the point of maybe getting rid of the bike and first mechanic could not solve. The second mechanic discovered it and fixed by dissembling it and lubing. Amazing awesome solution!

    Thanks for the reply Tony, from my seat on the "Gary Fisher, Tiberon" street bike the clicking seems to be coming from "crankset hub". Footwear are sneakers no clips on this bike. I ride mostly in "2" gear in front 3 gear option and adjust with smaller 7 gears in back. I took 15-mile ride around Ocean Drive in Newport, Rhode Island yesterday to see the Mansions and experienced the same clacking after 30 or 40 minutes. Cut ride short due to clacking getting too loud. Today, took bike out for test run and no sound/clacking at all. Could noise be due to bearings getting hot and not working as smooth as they should? Thanks, A friend, Rick

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is possible. These super common sounds are usually due to DIRTY or DRY bearings. You’ll often find that after riding your bike for a while or in harsh conditions these noises start to creep in. Areas to check if you’re hearing these noises would be:
      Most likely:
      Crankset/ Bottom Bracket bearings. From what I can derive from others with a similar problem, the bottom bracket bearings may be dirty or worn, the bottom bracket may not be tight or installed properly, the crankset may be loose, or a combination of these. You might want to have your local bike shop look at the bottom bracket bearings and crankset.
      Less likely but possible:
      Headset
      Pivots (MTB)
      Derailleur jockey wheels or chain guide pulleys
      Chain
      Derailleur “clutch” or lockout area
      Saddle rail clamp bolt
      Let me know what you find out. Good luck and regards, Tony

      If you see metal "bumps" on the teeth, the cassette may need to also be replaced (even though it might not be the cause of your current problems. See:
      th-cam.com/video/g5uqTNmikro/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchand

    The most difficult click I had was a few years ago. It happened randomly, sometimes at low speed sometimes a high speed. mostly on roads with a good surface quality.
    I tried everything riding the bike, even let someone else ride my bike and I followed behind to hear if i could spot anything. I gave up. At the end of season when i was cleaning my shoes i heared the click again. Strange, it turned out the be the plates with screw thread of the 2 screw shimano shoe plates. The could move inside the shoe. I used shoe plates with 3 screws. I put a few elastic bands in the space and my rides were silent next season.

    Thanks for the great video. I get infrequent creaking once every pedal stroke. It tends to occur 15-20 minutes into a ride. If I stop, for say 10 mins, the creaking will go away. It's a new bike if that helps.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One of the major causes of creaking when pedaling are worn cleats or worn shoes. Check the cleats (especially Look type) for wear. Are the pedals new or old ones you put on the new bike. Either way, they may need to be removed, threads greased and properly tightened.
      More often the noise be a result of two threaded components not being properly torqued down to the manufacturer's spec, allowing them to shift ever so slightly when you push hard on the pedals or lean into a turn. See: www.pinkbike.com/news/Tech-Tuesday-Finding-and-Fixing-that-Creak-2011.html
      You might take the bike back to the dealer and have him make sure that the bolts and bottom bracket is properly greased (Fiber Grip for Carbon Fiber) and torqued to specifications.
      The cause of creaks has always driven me crazy. Once I noticed it only going up hill pushing the pedals with force. It turned out that I was firmly gripping the handlebars. When on the flat and I held the handlebars lightly, it went away. What was needed was to clean and place Fiber Grip on the handlebar clap and tighten the bolts to specs. Recently I noticed intermittent creaking once every pedal stroke with only my left pedal. The cleat was fine. But when I switched bicycle shoes, no creak. Sometimes when shoes age, they can flex and creak. Intermittent bottom bracket creaks are notorious for they're difficulty to resolve and may require the use of a Thread Lock. See:
      th-cam.com/video/ow-iRD_dHs8/w-d-xo.html
      All in all, return to the dealer and have him make sure that all parts are lubricated and torqued properly. If he can't solve it, maybe he can replace the bike. Don't take no for an answer.
      Let me and our viewers have some feedback on how you make out. Regards, Tony

    Hello. I really like your videos and the simple way you present things. The clicking my bike makes is when the effort increases a little, like in a shallow uphill gradient or with strong winds in your face. If on flat and without much effort on the pedals (like when there's wind behind) then there is no clicking. Any idea what this can be ? Many thanks!

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  ปีที่แล้ว

      Often times, noise won't be apparent unless you put the bike under load such as pedaling hard or uphill. Investigating the source requires patience. The more common sources are cleat/pedal or bottom bracket. Check the shoe cleats and pedals for wear and replace if noticeably worn. Old pedals can have worn bearings requiring replacement. Bottom bracket may need overhaul. But first, check out these videos:
      th-cam.com/video/xn0bokygJ9c/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/InW64uutftM/w-d-xo.html
      Try the simple things first. Listen closely to the clicking to try and pin point it's orgin. Also check for loose wheel spoke be plucking the spokes and listening for one with a lower tone. Let me know how you make out and we'll do some more investigation as we go. Regards, Tony

    Thanks for the video. My bike clicks every 3 to 4 pedal rotations, even when not shifting gears. I put the bike on a stand and noticed that the jockey/pulley wheel on the rear derailleur jumps at the same frequency, while the chain always stayed on. I checked the chain and it looks OK. What could be the problem? Thanks.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is in the chain even though it may look OK. On the stand, run the chain backward and look at the point where the derailleur jumps. If you can, mark the chain with a magic marker, white out or nail polish at that point. Then move the chain were you can see it better. Make sure the chain is intact by checking the links around where the mark is. If the chain is not damaged, look for a stiff link in the chain around this area. Greetings, I like the simple and informative style of video. My challenge, I ride in nbr 2 big gears mostly. after 30 - 45 minutes into ride I get this clicking/clacking noise. No noise in coast. gets more intense, volume wise, as I continue to ride. It resets the next time I ride and I the get noise again after 30 - 45 minutes. Thoughts? Thanks Rick

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not having noise until 20-30 minutes is odd. Most mechanical noise is heard from the onset, not developing later. Although there are two considerations:
      1. With time, bike shoes, pedals and cleats do wear. The bike shoe platform may become less rigid with wear and develop a creaking sound which you may not notice immediately the day of your ride. This I have experienced this and a new set of bike shoes solved the problem (but it may or may not in your case). Most pedal and cleat wear may cause noise, but you usually hear that from the onset.
      2. I, myself, have noticed that as I get tired (usually hours not minutes), I may not pedal in a nice even circular motion and there sometime is a hesitation at the top of my pedal stroke on one side - causing a clicking like sound.
      This delay onset click/noise is not easy to trouble shoot. See:
      www.roadbikereview.com/threads/drivetrain-noise-after-25-miles.207090/
      Let me know about "nbr" and "two big gears". Listen closely and also observe. Is the sound related to your pedal stroke and where in your pedal stoke. Do you have a second pair of bike shoes to try (but don't rush out and buy a new pair unless yours are very old). I wish I could be of more help but keep me informed since we can all learn by your experience. Tony

    A regular clicking noise specific to one rear cog can result from a slighty bent cog tooth. The chain hangs up - then settles with a click. You've got to put in on the stand and do some visual/audible inspection to catch this. Very crazy-making.

    i’ve got a clicking sound but not consistent. I’m thinking maybe seat tube needs lube, or saddle rails, or pedals. could it be one of those areas radiating the sound? And it doesn’t happen all the time. Most of the time it’s when I put pressure on the pedals or pedaling off the saddle. if i’m just in a neutral speed, no clicking. driving me nuts. I have a Spesh Creo. TIA for any suggestions.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Clicking under load and WHEN OFF THE SADDLE suggest something OTHER THEN seatpost or saddle. Double check that the click or creak occurs when OFF the saddle (since the seatpost and seatpost binder are the most common causes of click/creaks). I also assume that there is no clicking when coasting since it is only when the pedals are under load. Several possibilities to consider when clicking occurs under load and also off the saddle. Start with easiest and work toward that which is a bit more difficult to disassemble and lubricate.
      1. Cleats and pedals. Check the cleats for wear and replace if necessary. Remove, clean and grease pedal spindle threads. Pedal noise may occur only under load. Finally, if the pedal have been around a while, the bearings may be shot and need and overhaul or the pedals replaced. See:
      th-cam.com/video/xn0bokygJ9c/w-d-xo.html
      2. Handlebars clamp. A common source of noise (usually creaking rather then clicking). See:
      th-cam.com/video/8Sv_cBBDu6Q/w-d-xo.html
      3. Bottom bracket. Check for loose bb. Worn bearings or loose bottom bracket are a common cause. Check as in the video below. You may consider having your local bike store have a look or overhaul the bb.
      th-cam.com/video/InW64uutftM/w-d-xo.html
      Less common causes are loose spoke or need to grease quick release or through axle (usually click when coasting or pedaling).
      Finding the source of clicking is a slow process requiring detective work since noise can be referred along the frame. Be patient. Let me know how you make out or if I can be of more assistance. Regards, Tony

    Great video! I have a similar clicking problem whilst pedaling, but I noticed it clicks the same rhythm as the wheel rotates, but only when I'm pedaling. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1. Wheel Noises Only When Pedaling: A clicking noise while pedaling often comes from your chain wanting to jump up or down a gear on the rear cassette while pedaling. This can typically be fixed by adjusting the tension of the cable that runs from your shifter to your rear derailleur. Depending on the style of your bike, there will be barrel adjusters located on the shifters, cables and/or near the rear derailleur. Use the barrel adjusters to fine-tune the cable tension.
      www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bike-creaks.html
      2. Wheel Noises Only When Pedaling (if above doesn't work): Noises once-per-wheel-revolution that only occur when you are pedaling are most often related to the freewheel or Freehub. The freewheel or Freehub bearings may be loose, or the cassette may be loose on the Freehub body.
      See if you can wiggle the sprockets back and forth. There should be little or no lateral play.
      If the freewheel/Freehub bearings are loose, it is sometimes possible to tighten them, see my Freewheels Article.
      If the sprocket cassette is loose on the Freehub body, you may be missing a spacer, or you may be trying to use a cassette that includes an 11 tooth sprocket on a Freehub body that was not intended to accommodate an 11 tooth sprocket. See my Shimano Cassettes article for details on this.
      If the chain in a derailler system is too wide for the spacing between sprockets, it may produce a light rubbing sound with the same rhythm as the wheel rotation -- usually only in some sprocket combinations and most often when using an inner chainwheel, which pulls the chain closer to the next larger rear sprocket.
      www.sheldonbrown.com/creaks.html
      3. Finally, is the noise coming from the front or back wheel? From the rear (most likely if it's only when you pedal), you may have a gunked up or broken rear freehub. Take it to your local bicycle dealer and have them check it out.
      Let me know how you make out. Regards, Tony

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      We'll start with the easier items first:
      1. See if you can adjust rear derailleur barrel adjuster for smoother shift. How long since you replaced the rear derailleur cable. See: th-cam.com/video/J_bGEZky02k/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchand
      3. Check for worn chain: th-cam.com/video/FzyRCcjRuu0/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchand
      4. Check for cassette wear: th-cam.com/video/g5uqTNmikro/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchand
      5. Check for bent rear derailleur hanger: th-cam.com/video/qHK6jQizIdc/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchand
      6. Is there play in the rear cassette, i.e., can you move it a tiny bit side to side or does it wobble: Many of today's freehubs require an adapter ring be put on before installing the cassette. The ring thickness varies depending on weither you're running a 9, 10 or 11 speed drive system.
      7. Finally, the cassette may not be tightened to specification. Remove the cassette, lightly grease the freehub, check that the adapter ring is in place if required, replace and tighten cassette as in video: th-cam.com/video/qVzWQuHPz50/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchand
      If all these fail or you don't feel comfortable making these adjustments , you'll need to have your bike shop take a look. Let me and our viewers know how you make out. We also learn from riders feed back. Regards, Tony

    super helpful! I'm having an issue with my new bike where it also makes some clicking sounds - about 1 time per revolution of the rear cassette. The problem looks like the chain is grinding on the teeth as it's going onto the cassette. This happens on maybe 2 or threee of the teeth but not all. This problem also persists across all the gears on the rear. What should I try to adjust with this issue?

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you running a 1x or compact in the front and what is the range of the cassette in the back? Are you sure the sound comes is coming from the rear and not the front derailleur?

    • @karinatsang4851
      @karinatsang4851 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I might be using the terminology wrong but there are two gears on the front. I’m pretty sure the issue lies with the back though - if I watch the chain on the back cassette as I move the pedal, I can see that the chain does not seat properly on the teeth on the cassette (just one or two of the teeth and not all teeth)

    • @karinatsang4851

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@karinatsang4851 The easiest thing is to have the shop where you bought the bike take a look and see if they need to "re-index" the rear derailleur. Also check for a bent derailleur hanger. You could also have a bad rear derailleur or cassette installed when the bike was put together. I have videos on how to tackle these jobs if you should want to see them but who ever you bought the bike from should take a look and fix it. My crankarm is rubbing to the front derailleur. Is it possible to adjust the barrel adjuster? Which rotation of the L screw? Clockwise or counter clockwise.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First check that the derailleur cage is parallel to the frame by looking at the derailleur from the rear. If that's OK, use the outer limiting scew of the derailleur, the one furthest from the frame and closest to you. With the chain in the small chain ring, turn the outer limiting screw counter clockwise an 1/8 or a turn. Turn the pedals and shift. If it still runs, repeat the process after shifting back to the small chain ring. Go slow, little at a time. If you turn the outer limiting screw to far, the chain will come off when you shift. It's a delicate balance.
      Note: You will always get some chain rub when in the small chain ring and smallest cog. This is called "cross chaining," a gear combination we usually avoid.
      Let me know how you make out. Regards, Tony

    • @tony10speed

      This is beyond my ability to adjust/fix your bike over the internet. One needs to see the derailleur and the particular problem that's occurring. If the chain is hitting the outer derailleur plate when in the large chainring, it could be as easy as adjusting the outer limiting screw of the derailleur. Beyond that, your best bet is to have your local bike store take a look. Wish I could be of more help, Tony
