Testing The Bosch Sx Lightweight Motor At Sea Otter Classic 2024: Is It Really 600 Watts?

  • Bosch SX mid-power motor tested at Sea Otter Classic 2024. I’ve learned in the past that motor torque is what change the speed of the mountain bike on climbs, and motor watts is what determines top speed. That’s why I’ve proclaimed in a previous video that torque is the most important factor on a mountain bike motor.
    This video proves that because even though this excellent motor claims 600 Watts , I could not go very fast up a steep hill, no matter how hard my effort or how fast my cadence. I also tried entering the hills very fast, but I could not maintain my speed as the hills got steeper
    That being said, they still may be one of the best mid power motors available because it has excellent Bosch torque sensors, power, modes, and modular batteries. With Sram transmission drivetrain, allowing shifting under load, the very fit bike rider is rewarded. But it’s no replacement for displacement, and it’s hard to tap into 600 W on mountain bike steeper trails. On flats and rollers it pulls very well but the 20 mph speed limit gets in the way we predict this may be an awesome motor for gravel bikes and commuters.

    I think people will interpret this review as largely negative, but it shouldn’t be. It’s not a full power motor and that shouldn’t be the expectation. My experience with it has been much more positive than Francis’, however. I have ridden with fit and fast guys on full power motors and kept up in steep terrain, albeit I worked harder and used more battery than they did. I also rode with a fit guy who was on a Transition Relay, and the Bosch SX blew the Fazua out of the water. As noted in the video, you don’t get the super torquey, ratchet uphill at slow cadence response that a big motor gives you, but that’s not the goal or purpose of this bike. If you want a lighter package with a lot of power, and you’re willing to put in effort and get rewarded with a power boost (over 80 rpms is when it feel strong) this bike will blow your mind. If you expect it to be a Dyname motor minus 20 pounds, you’ll be disappointed.
    The motor is also tunable, which I don’t think was covered to a great extent here.

    • @EMTBReview
      @EMTBReview  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Correct, this is not meant to be negative because it will be one of the great lightweight motor options of 2024. It’s like a fazua but with an extender.
      But it really is meant to bring expectations down as opposed to the 600 W claims. On the trail, it feels like I midpowered bike, just like the Fazua. But it Has the Bosch extender and they’re tunability.
      But as I have learned, on mountain bikes., Watts is really for top speed and torque is for acceleration and climbing.

      I agree, I’m coming from an Orbea Rise and this motor feels great. Yes they say it has up to 600 watts of peak power but i still think it can’t be compared to a full power bike because that’s not what it is. My husband and I just got this bike in the C2 build and we are really excited about it. Thanks for all your reviews. Looking forward to more.

    Appreciate how you keep it real, some people make the lightweight motors more than they really are. I'm sticking to my full power.

      @EMTBReview  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, almost all the videos I’ve seen on TH-cam hype up the great power of this motor when you spin up the RPM. But in mountain biking wattage really doesn’t matter that much. It’s the torque that accelerates us and gets us up the hills. The wattage is key for determining our top speed, but in mountain bikes, it’s limited to 20 miles an hour, anyway, by law.

      @EMTBReview  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Fair enough! This is definitely not a replacement for a GEN 2 Levo. It is perhaps a better levo SL, or Trek Fuel exe

    My husband and I just bought this bike in the C2 build. We are coming from Orbea Rise’s. We both felt like it had plenty of power and the transfer of power between modes is very smooth compared to the Shimano EP8 RS.

    • @EMTBReview

      Good choice! Yes this a much more advanced and configurable motor compared for the EP8 RS

    I just did a test day here in the U.K. and rode the Levo SL back to back with a Whyte E Lyte 150 and 140 (with the Bosch SX motor).
    I feel like the Levo and E Lyte are similar at normal riding but if you really spin the cranks the SX is a bit faster, but spinning that fast feels really weird to me… I’m not sure if I could get my head around that.
    Anything with a Fazua feels gruntier and closer to a full-power bike in my (albeit limited) experience.

      @EMTBReview  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Very nice! I really appreciate your share. And I agree with your observations. Thanks a ton, my good man!
      I publish the video before that stated that in mountain bikes, torque is a lot more important than watts. That’s because torque is what changes your speed and accelerate you. Watts is what determines your top speed.

    • @Mockle07
      @Mockle07 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@EMTBReview No problem 👍🏻 I totally agree re torque vs power for EMTBs, especially since the bikes only assist up to 16mph in Europe! 🙄 You really just don’t get the chance to open the SX up enough.
      That said, I still enjoyed riding the E Lyte, I think it’s a fantastic bike but the marketing from Bosch has shot themselves in the foot because they keep saying “as powerful as a full power EMTB” and while you can sort of make that argument on paper, it absolutely doesn’t feel like it on the trail. I rode an Orbea Wild with the full power CX and that was just way faster because of the torque and torque response. It’s a good system but their marketing g strategy is not the best.
      Also I don’t know if you’re aware but apparently when added, the SX system uses the range extender as part of the whole system… so you can’t set it to drain the extender first then throw it in the car when it runs dry and carry on doing laps etc… that’s a huge own goal in my opinion given that other systems offer that option.

    To get that 600 watts Bosch claim you have to have a cadence of 120 rpm which for some people is not possible and certainly not sustainable on a big climb, I still think it’s a fantastic offering from Bosch though for those who do not want the full fat feel 👌

    I believe Canyon uses that motor in their Grizl-on gravel bike. Would love to see you do a review on the Canyon Grizl-on. Canyon also has another e gravel bike with the Bosch 85nm motor.

    • @EMTBReview
      @EMTBReview  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great suggestion! This may be ideal for a gravel bike. I’ve learned that torque is what changes speed and watch is what determines top speed. So a gravel bike that can go 28 miles an hour can take advantage of this motor’s watts

    Between the Ari Nebo Peak and the Norco Fluid VLT, what would you choose (better descending bike)? Fazua or Bosch?

  • @mprox3431
    @mprox3431 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Thanks for the great video. My question would be how is it at lower cadences say 60-80? Does it actually perform well compared to the fazua and levo? There's no way I could maintain a cadence over 100rpm. The battery combo is great but you are making major compromises if you have to continually have very high rpm

    • @EMTBReview
      @EMTBReview  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      At 60 to 80 RPM it feels stronger than a levo SL and maybe a hairless torque than a fazua motor

    Does the Bosch sx motor rattle on the descents?

    • @EMTBReview
      @EMTBReview  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No noticeable rattle really. From what I heard from other reviewer’s, it’s not dead quiet like a TQ motor but it’s nowhere like the full powered bosch motor or the Shimano motor.

  • @lee.j7077
    @lee.j7077 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Is it noticeably more power than the tq or similar?thanks

    • @EMTBReview
      @EMTBReview  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The TQ is the weakest motor in the midpower category. The Levo sl motor is faster than the TQ. The Fazua Ride 60 is noticeably faster than both of those.
      The Bosch SX feels about the same as the Fazua Ride60

    • @EMTBReview
      @EMTBReview  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      No. This is us all the power. This motor can deliver in the lower revolutions at the moment. I learned that during testing the team and optimized this power delivery with firmware because it used to require higher revs.

  • @taol8258
    @taol8258 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The specs are weird for the $11k model. Why the 130mm travel? the budget version is the only one to come with a mech derailleur.

    • @EMTBReview
      @EMTBReview  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Like the pivot shuttle SL, some mid power bikes, but less travel so they can make fast E bikes under 40 pounds. I think more capable made power bikes, with 150 mm of travel are better

    u need to keep in mind, that the sx only gives u the most power when pedalling in high cadence. this motor wants higher cadence in general.

    • @EMTBReview
      @EMTBReview  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, I definitely know that and I tried to keep my cadence as high as I could. I think very high cadence is so difficult achieve and steep hills when the power is needed the most

    What's the question mark after the 600w for? Yes they are 250w nominal wattage with a max output of 600w it's a way for shimano, bosch, batangas etc to be able to get around the 250w limit in the EU market and why the UK don't need 500w motors are our 250w are more than capable of reaching 30+ mph its speed limit we need increasing a tad not wallowing the motor wattage up to 500w that's just stupid and not the way to go around getting a new top speed limit law passed!

    • @EMTBReview
      @EMTBReview  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The question is whether this 600 watt motor feels as fast as the 550 watt motor of the Specialized Levo on a mountain bike trail. Does it feel more powerful on any circumstance?

      I have been thinking the same, so many brands seem to be putting their prices UP, while there are still bike shops with last year’s models at 30-50% off! I honestly don’t get what’s going on. Maybe the people that could justify buying a $14k bike three years ago still can so the brands think “fuck it, why not?” 🤷🏼‍♂️
