Sometimes I feel like a junkie scouring through TH-cam looking for new Dire Straits reaction videos. Then when I find a new one I'm "yes!". This was a good one. Good reaction and also, good video quality. It's nice when you don't have to "hide" the video you are reacting to.
I think a bunch of us do the same for Dire Straits and other bands. With Pink Floyd I always feel when a reactor starts reacting to them, the 'PF reactor watch group' swarms to that channel and adds a bunch of comments with song requests, info about the band and such. When the well dries up, we move on the next new PF reactor. 🙂
Fellow junkie here 😊
Telegraph Road. Alchemy is a masterpiece.
Indeed it is!!!!!
Indeed it REALLY is!
Yes my favourite
Got to agree
The ultimate track for story telling (as well as instrumental mastery all round) is Telegraph Road from their Alchemy Live concert, peak song writing!
Mark Knopfler on my personal Mt Rushmore of all around musical artists!! ❤
Mark Knopfler is one of the all-time greats! And he's still working at age 75. His most recent album came out in April 2024. He also owns a professional recording studio in London.
Dire Straits existed as a band from 1977 to 1995. The core members were Mark and bass player John Illsley. All the other band members turned over at least once during that time. Keyboard player Guy Fletcher hadn't joined the band yet at the time of this video, but he's the Dire Straits member who followed Mark into his solo career after 1995. They still work together.
There are 6 Dire Straits studio albums, and Mark has done 10 solo albums. But all the Dire Straits members have done other things in music. Some have retired by now, but they all did well.
You must check out Telegraph Road from the same live Alchemy concert. Great reaction by the way.
Sultans of Swing was inspired by Mark Knopfler stumbling into a near-empty London pub, where a mediocre jazz band played their hearts out to an uninterested crowd. At the end, the singer grandly announced, “We are the Sultans of Swing.” Knopfler loved the irony-the contrast between their humble reality and their majestic name.
Ive loved Dire Straits for 50 yrs.....always happy to see new recruits...
Mark recently auctioned off 100 of his guitars for charity....hes such a cool humble man.🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Can't go wrong diving into this band and Mark Knopfler !! Enjoy😲😏❤️🎙🎸🥁😎🤘
Never seen anything as good as this
I’m so pleased you did Romeo and Juliet live before doing Sultans of Swing. It gets overlooked in my opinion, it’s one of my favourite songs of all time.
i can thank Pat (the requester) for that ordering, this was simply such a treat
Fantastic reaction 👍.
Gary Moore (live).
Roger Waters. Both are definitely worth a reaction.
Enjoy your travels through amazing artists 🙏
I was lucky enough to see them live last century xd, and just say that this song is orgasmic, they were playing the final part and I still remember thinking "please, don't let it end, don't let it end xd". It's incredible.
Your cocaine analogy was perfect. Lol. Mark Knopfler is one of the most highest rated songwriters, lyricists and guitarists of all time. Dire Straits were one of the biggest selling acts of all time too. Their music is so diverse and for someone to write such incredible music and perform it how they do. Mark is a musical genius and virtuoso. The whole band on whatever setup was out of this world. Wonderful reaction.
"Brothers in arms" and "You and your friend" from On the night-Live is a must!
You mentioned the interesting guitar for Romeo and Juliet, it's a National Style O resonator guitar, his was built in the 1937. Beautiful guitar and sound, National recently started making them again based on the same design.
Yes, your guitar teacher knew best! LOL! One of the single best performances by any band, ever (with 'Telegraph Road' from the same concert). Mark Knopfler is a master musician. One of the best guitarist in history.
Telegraph Road, storytelling at it's finest. You'll dig it.😊
Subscribed.
I'll check it out! Appreciate you
Must go: "Telegraph Road", "Tunnel of Love", ... Nice reaction ...
My my late teens and early 20’s, oh so many great memories!! Dire Straits were a huge part of those years in Australia 🇦🇺
I was late to the party :(
One of the few bands that was always great live, bunch of different variations every performance beyond a studio or radio performance recording.
True entertainers.
Yesss, we needed a reaction to this band! Thank you!!!
I love when musicians react to Mark Knopfler for the first time! Great reaction, he's not like us.
thanks, he's not like us is so right
Mark's voice stands out because not many lead singers are baritones. BTW, Princess Di had a major crush on him.
Buddy, you've got some good moments ahead of you in learning more of the bands music and Knopfler's guitar playing. I'm sure it's been mentioned a time or twenty below, but his is one of the all time greats on the instrument.
Well done Mate, really good job!
Thank you! Cheers!
I'd find it harder to believe if you didn't like Dire Straits, one of the few can't miss music choices out there. Mark Knopfler is a gift that I've enjoyed since the day their debut album came out.
Dire Straits live are a master class in musicianship. Other amazing DS performances are Telegraph Road, Tunnel of Love, Brothers in Arms, Private Investigations & Your Latest Trick.
so as in fishing you got well and truely HOOKED , once you here Dire Straits you are hooked for life , the class and quality of musianship is unrivalled , they have their own unique sound , nobody else comes close , Terry Williams is insane on drums , Nick Clark sublime on keyboards , John Illsley is magnificent on bass and Mark , well what can you say , the only man i know who can make a guitar feel emotion and speak to you through his playing literally makes the guitar cry or sing , when his vocals stop the guitar finishes off the story , plz do listen to Telegraph road and Going home both from Alchemy live and also you simply have to listem to Brothers in arms , enjoy all of then
This was just a special moment in time, this particular concert, this particular song.
"Brothers in Arms" is epic.
Love Dire Straits!!
You should of heard it when i was in my teens, im 64 now, keep up. Lol
They have actually used Mark Knopfler on soundtracks. Most memorable to me being "Kal."
You found Mark! Sultans of Swing is Classic.. Tried to learn the lead and hahahaha Failed. Saw Mark when he went on tour with Eric Clapton 25th anniversary as another guitar player. Keep going Sohum love your reactions ❤
Tunnel of love and Skateaway ❤
Telegraph road from alchemy is a masterpiece too
Really enjoyed your reaction and comments. First time hearing Romeo and Juliet - so lovely. Of course I absolutely love Sultans of Swing….
Yes yes yes DS live Alchemy was one of the best concerts ever, and they were so much better live than in the studio. In this line-up simply awesome. Mark Knopfler is a guitar god, Terry Williams on drums (for me the best they had) just out of this world, Guy Fletcher on keys just awesome, Hal Lindes on guitar great and I especially love John Illsley on bass, he is so perfect and always dancing. Make sure you check out “Telegraph Road” from this concert and from the Wembley 1985 concert “Tunnel of Love” for me the best version and the outro will blow you away
Both best live versions in my opinion. And a side note, the drum kit was taken off stage on a stretcher after Sultans of swing performance in critical condition....luckily it pulled thru,! 😂❤...Great reaction sir.
I got blessed listening to this let me tell you. Long live the kit haha
It looks to me (my old eyes, at least) that (lead singer/songwriter) Mark Knopfler is playing a _resonator_ guitar on 'Romeo & Juliet'
(and, I have never seen Mark play guitar with a _plectrum_ /'pick') by the way, did you know Mark taught himself to play guitar
...incorporating styles he liked, rather than what styles guitar tutors would traditionally teach. Developing _his own unique way_ to play guitar from the beginning. :)
Mark Knophler sold some of his precious guitars for £8 million for charity a musical legend and a good man
For me Mark Knoefler and David Gilmour both have unique and wonderfully expressive ways of playing, as opposed to the shredding that seems popular with a lot of modern guitarists. I would also include Carlos Santana and Jimi Hendrix as having their own style and niche along with them, with as much talent as you could possibly stuff into a human brain. We are so lucky to have this performance on video and as everyone else says. "Telegraph Road" is another incredible song from this same concert.
There are two keyboard players one each side of the drummer
Apparently he's a self taught Guitarist and he wrote most of their songs. He said in a recent interview when he donated alot of his guitars to a charity event that ppl day he's one of the best Guitarist in the world but he disagreed.
If you love lyrics, you are witnessing the most prolific songwriter ever. Mark Knopfler is a consummate musician, inimitable guitarist, gorgeous vocals, and sole songwriter & musical arranger of 6 Dire Straits Albums, 10 solo albums & 9 movie soundtracksl. You are so empathetic because you're so right about Marks charisma & sex appeal to us women & girls. Dire Straits are best seen live as they outperform the recordings. If you watch more DS please don't go jumping into the 'official' recordings. So much less rewarding as the live performances give you more content & a lot more genuine atmosphere. I❤️MK
I have to agree with the comments of Telegraph Road from their Alchemy live album
Too late Mark/DS has already bewitched us with his music. I can't wait to see your reaction to seeing and hearing Telegraph Road from the same concert, it's out of this world. Actually the whole Alchemy live is a must see for any Dire Straits lover.
Pausing in the middle of Mark playing 🫨
Glad you enjoyed the live. It forms a special framework for going back and checking out the studio version.
You'll get it.
Someone once asked Prince, "What's it like to be the best rock guitar player in the world"? He answered, "Ask Mark Knopfler"!
Telegraph Road. A master class in dynamics.
This wouldn't really be classified as swing music, swing usually refers to a style of big band jazz popular in the 1930s and 40s, melodic danceable jazz with a lot of improvised soloing
One of the few, which just needs to play a single guitar accord, and you know immediately that's him. GREAT Mark!
Great reaction - thankyou. For a total contrast, try their "Brothers in Arms" - totally different mood. Also, as mentioned below, "Telegraph Road" - possibly the best of Mark's story-telling.
"Swing" as a genre was a form of jazz popular back in the day - typically trumpet, trombone, sax, maybe clarinet
Alchemy is one of the greatest albums/films ever. They were on top of their game, and pretty much all of it tops the original studio versions.
Sohum, a great reaction, thank you very much!
Ok, now that you opened this box called "Dire Straits" (and later, Mark Knopflers solo work), you might want to continue with "Telegraph Road", also the Alchemy live version. In my opinion the greatest song in rock history in terms of storytelling, guitar, piano(!!), drums and emotions. Then continue with "Tunnel of love", there are various live versions on TH-cam. Check it out, you are going to love it!
There is a huge amount to discover. Mark is a geniuos! My opinion.
Greetings from Switzerland
NICE....... 🤘👌
Good mision man
Thanks
And now you have to watch Telegraph Road from the same gig
Yes, Mark IS on Mt Rushmore. . . at least my personal one. I love Romeo and Juliet. And this performance of Sultans is one of the top three or four live performances I've ever, ever seen. Every one of them shines... especially the drummer! And I'm 74, so I've been around the block. Go deep on Mark, w/or without the Straits. And PLEASE: Watch Telegraph Road, from the same Alchemy Tour. Make sure you have the lyrics!
Loved the reaction!!
tyyyyy
It is Mark Knopfler.
Great reaction - 2 great songs to showcase some their diverse range. Also on the more melancholy end, check out Brothers in Arms.
The backstory to 'Sultans of Swing' is cool, look it up.
Man, whudda guitarist eh! such a unique style! The absolute undisputed King of
'pull-offs' - agree??
👍🤘
100% agree haha
He sounds like Bob Dylan for sure.
Telegraph Road from the same concert.
The song is straight up, rock ‘n’ roll. What other commenters have said is correct. They’re singing about a band called the Sultans of Swing.
That’s definitely Mark Knopfler.
This is from 1980 one of my very fav Blu-ray Alchemy. Every song is incredible. Prob find it pretty cheap somewhere.
This is a show of a lifetime lol
Great reaction check out telegraph road live from this concert
Jackson Browne is another great artist, lyricist, and storyteller you should check out.
One of my favorite songs
The name came from Mark walking into a pub and saw a band where no one was interested in them. Their name was Sultans of Swing. some thing like that
You must do Telegraph Road next. I've no doubt you love it. It has elements of both the tracks you played today. Enjoy!
I think you found your favourite band
Now your next lesson, Telegraph Road from the same concert Alchemy
If you've been alive the last 30+ years or what ever... you've heard this song.
a lot of years to enjoy this masterpiece
dear friend Sohum those was inarrivable "monsters" i lived at my young age..... INARRIVABLE!!!!!!!!!! No matter who are yo unow... you simply can't! Go backward to 70/80 rock and you'll understand the meaning of what i said! 😘
Yer keep your girl away from him😂 cause he also has a pr of legs to die for!!❤
Haha, you were young and stupid.. as we all were!!!😂😂🇬🇧🇬🇧
Telegraph Road
As a guitarist you can see that Mark uses no pick. It is all finger plucking.
Duke Ellington swings
Mark Knopfler is considered one of the best guitar players. Full stop.
Once, when asked how it feels to be the best guitar player in the world, Eric Clapton said 'I don't know, you'd need to ask Mark Knopfler'
It's said that in any Dire Straits song, Marks guitar sings lead and his voice does the fills.
That's massive praise , and I can see where that feeling comes from... i love the guitar as voice
Sad song which he wrote about a woman who used him to further her own career.
Great reaction, thanks for doing justice to this great music!
My very favorite Dire Straits songs:
1. Brothers in Arms
2. Telegraph Road
But Mark's greatest song is a special version, approved by Bob Dylan, of
"Knockin' on Heaven's Door (The Bairns of Dunblane)," which NOBODY has reacted to yet, which is criminal! You'll thank me, even as you weep hearing it. (Every human does.). About the killing of children.
th-cam.com/video/ZgAoe1o2134/w-d-xo.htmlsi=x1ZwGjk9ovRsyqzL
There is No backing track that’s all MK
You should not be afraid of unfamiliar genres - if the musicians are top notch. Other iconic acts: Try Zappa plays Zappa "Zomby Woof". Or Yes doing the acoustic version of "Long distance runaround" (2004). Or if you want real swing: "Chattanooga Choo Choo" with Glenn Miller Orchestra, Nicholas Brothers and Dorothy Dandrige from the movie "Sun Valley Serenade" (1941).
Reminds me of Bruce Springsteen. To me, Dire Straits are the British Bruce Springsteen.
Eagles are also storytellers.
Have you reacted to the Eagles?? They are great!
Not yet, but I've heard issues with reacting to them on TH-cam... lots of copyrights apparently
Please, react to Gabriel Henrique Someone You Loved. Phenomenal
Dude, pausing/stopping partway through a solo or vocal line is annoying as hell !! Get to the end of the solo or the phrase
Guess what. Telegraph road next. Didn't see that coming lol.
