Knopfler is the perfect backup singer to his own guitar. His cool, raspy, whispered vocals make the cries of his guitar soud even sweeter.
MK sings like he's talking out of tune.
Yeah. Telegraph Road's a truly great Alchemy live track. 😅
Mark Knopfler has a beautiful way of writing music. I love listening to Dire Straits. You should really listen to Telegraph Road Alchemy Live. He can tell a story.
Telegraph Road is an all time favorite tune for me. I seem to be a rare advocate for the studio version as the starting place. The whole Love Over Gold album is top shelf.
PS I’ve seen Dire Straits and Mark live several times and love the live albums but the studio production should not be ignored. Just my take on a great story song. Cheers!
Mark Knopfler's live 'Brothers in Arms' Is untouchable. He is a genius.
Thank you, Polo, for this.
Dire Straits did a lot of truly great songs. But the studio version of Tunnel of Love is just a masterful work of art. I've been listening to that song off and on for 40 years and it's just so good, so flawless, that it never grows old.
Live is better
A superb performance, even a masterpiece. One of my favourites from them.
Dire Straits with Mark Knopfler is one of my all time favorites. He finds a grove in his faster work that is irresistible and his slower ones like this one exhibit a cool soulful blues vibe. Keep posting them. Thanks.
in a sea of shredders and players of scales, Mark stands out playing tasteful licks without worrying about impressing anyone
This is one of Dire Straits most underrated songs, fantastic blues playing from Mark Knopfler, his guitar tone is amazing here. I would always advise listening to their studio versions first, then the live version, because they are great in the studio, but then they take it to the next level live.
True. So is Planet of New Orleans. Such a beautiful masterpiece.
When Brothers In Arms Came out on CD in the 80's i quickly became enamored by his talent and his tone. I had already been a fan since I first heard "Sultans of Swing" in 1978 but "Brothers in Arms is at another level and a masterpiece. And then when "On Every Street" came out in 1991 it solidified his genius as a guitar master. His tone emotes such feeling and brings you in like few others can. David Gilmour and Carlos Santana among a few others are in the same league with Mark Knopfler. This is but another beautiful song by Mark.
Oh now this is smoldering 🔥
At 60 years old, I've been to many concerts. All genres. I lean towards blues/blues rock. But I'm always amazed seeing Knopfler anywhere live...crowd is DEAD SILENT. Everyone wants to hear every note. The first time that happened at Red Rocks in Denver I was amazed...
Sensual and powerful, music and lyrics.🎸🎶 💗
I have listened to it many times, but never the live version. Brings to mind that the band was tight.
The sound of Mark's Pensa just rips through your sole and spine!! 👍👍❤️
One of three masterpieces from the album “On Every Street” .. the other two (IMO) being “Calling Elvis” (with Jeff Porcaro on drums) and “Planet of New Orleans”
Another Knofler masterpiece! A finger picking specialist!
This Pensa Suhr guitar was custom made for Mark by Rudi Pensa in New York. He decided to get this guitar made for himself, because he was fed up with switching guitars between songs. He & Rudi went to a coffee shop near the shop and the guitar was designed on the back of an envelope to Mark's exact specification. It was sold this year by Christies auction house for £520,000.00.
I remember when this album came out. Hard to believe it's been that long. Holy crap. This is one of my favorite tunes on that album.
Love watching your channel and reactions. Private Investigations from this concert is also jawdroppingly good. It's spine chilling and Mark plays the acoustic Spanish style. All the best from Australia, cheers 👍🎸🎸
When the studio album On Every Street dropped, this was instantly my favorite song on it for the beautiful play between Paul Franklin's pedal steel and Mark's Pensa Suhr (I think). After On the night live dropped, I couldn't ever decide which of the two versions is my favorite.
You asked us to suggest more live videos from Dire Straits. Please check out Live at Wembley the song Walk of Life and Tunnel of Love. The whole concert is absolutely brilliant. ❤️🇬🇧🎶
The dude playing steel guitar is Paul Franklin, who plays steel for Vince Gill. Franklin is a monster musician.
I never tire of Knopfler’s playing. Other guitarists I tire of, but never Mark Knopfler.
You should do Telegraph road. Either the studio or the live versions are good.
Keep listening to them! Thank you! ♡
Calms the soul!
Dire straits are awesome thank you 🤘🌹
The interweaving of his guitar and that wonderful peddle-steel work is magnificent. The scope just leaves your jaw on the floor.
Mark's guitar is connected to him, he's insane🔥🔥🔥🔥
Not only was Mark a guitar virtuoso, but he was also a skilled story-teller, song-writer and composer for the band. Fun Fact: In addition to all of that, his unique sound, the fact that he is a finger-plucking genius, and his ability to produce complex emotions and nuanced transitions with and through his guitar... Mark was actually left handed but was playing guitar with his right, whilst making it all look so easy! You are still missing out, however, if you haven't yet checked out their Alchemy Live performance of "Telegraph Road", which best showcases the breathtaking musicianship of this band and the kind of epic musical masterpiece they could collectively produce. Another very different but enjoyable example of Mark's talent is also on display in "Once Upon a Time in the West, also from 'Alchemy Live'. Enjoy!
He still is, he released his 10th solo album not to long ago
@@StevenQ74 I know, it's awesome! ❤ (I was merelyreferring to the Dire Straits days in my post).
It's been said many times that Mark's voice acts as the narrator with his guitar as the singer and they function in a call (Mark) and response (guitar) manner. Kinda hard to miss once you identify the pattern.
Mk legend he plays the guitar you listen
telegraph road from Alchemy is just epic
I can't wait for this...
Loved it!
Live performances you need to see are Telegraph Road alchemy live, and with Private Inestigations and Brothers in Arms from On the Night.... and for a studio version definitely Planet of New Orleans
This is the one concert I would've loved to have gone to... if it had been only two years later, I would've gone! But I was stuck in high school and couldn't travel to get there. Spewing.
I love how you called Mark and his guitar as a duo. Quite often he plays and the guitar sings. You asked so I’d recommend reacting to the studio version of Telegraph Road. It’s almost better than the live Alchemy version. It’s going to be tough finding any DS live performances that match up the Alchemy as it is still considered as one of the best live shows ever. Don’t get me wrong as this is a beautiful song w Mark Knopfler in seductive mode. That guitar always sounds sublime. He is the best to have ever played one IMHO.
Mark Knofler is one of the top 10 guitarist IMO. Great band a well.
very inspired song...touching soul
"Let me know in the comments???" OMG.
There are clips of Mark roaming London music stores,
Clips of him giving quickie guitar lessons,
and I'm sure, so much more than I think I know.
- The Notting Hillbillies,
- The studio version of "You and Your Friends" is to die for.
- His orchestral version of "Brothers in Arms" is likened unto, in my mind, that of Elton John with the "Madman Across the Water." They are countrymen, as you may know (by which I mean "from the same place, or group of islands."
- Did you know Mark Knopfler 'starred' in one of MTV's biggest early hits, "I Want My MTV."?? MTV didn't always exist, yo. It popped up in my early 20's and was "rad, dude."
- Speaking of across the pond, STING, in a "Rolling Stone" interview, was quoted as having sung ROXANNE in the shower Every. Single. Day.
Good night and thanks for your channel.
Beautiful, sensual song. You really need to watch Telegraph Road from the Alchemy 1983. It is absolutely breathtaking how great the musicians in this band are!
That's nice 🙂 slow and easy ❤ oOoOO Yes ✌️ Polo...
LOVE
You should ABSOLUTELY check out the Dire Straits song "Your Latest Trick". You will freak out!!!
If you like Dire Straits, you're gonna like this one. It's a late night drive home type of song.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; a travesty that Rolling Stone magazine listed him around #75 on the all time list of greatest guitarists ever! 😲
He is Top 10 every day of the week!
After watching your Sultans of Swing reaction I have become a huge Dire Straits fan would have loved to see them live. Can never go wrong with a Dire Straits live performance. Hopefully one day you get to Telegraph Road Alchemy Live, probably my favorite live performance of any band. The entire concert is amazing.
Yep same here.
Studio Dire Straits must listen to studio tracks. Tunnel of Love and Telegraph Road. You'll love them guaranteed ! Try and always find remastered versions on TH-cam as they usually sound better.
Live is way better
Thank you.
Mark Knopfler is amazing.
Very Spanish vibe to the guitar sound. Opening guitar was perfection.
I've loved Dire Straits since listening to them on the AM on my Chevelle driving to Chico at 11PM about 40 yrs ago. Now I must punch up some Nick Cave and maybe some Cramps before I go to bed. And Joan Armitragin to mello.
Calling Elvis, The Bug, Planet of New Orleans, How Long, Follow Me Home, Six Blade Knife, Lady Rider, Golden Heart, Your Own Sweet Way, Water of Love, I can go on...
Mark will take you on a journey.
hey bro, it's 2:00 in central Europe, I'm listening to your channel and I think (if you don't know it yet) listen to "Tunnel of Love" studio version. I know DS by heart from the first to the last sound, I've loved their music for 40 years - and if I had to choose (although it's an absurd choice) only one, the best, most perfect, absolutely good guitar solo and I could take only it to a lonely island without sounds - it would be the solo from "Tunnel of Love" studio version.
POLO, I think you will like Knopfler in "Notting Hillbillies" for the same reasons. 1990, give or take 2 years. "Railroad Work Song," for example. It was after he left Dire Straits, or should we say "dissolved."
What made me click on this video is it is an unsual song for reactors to check out. Any song of theirs is at least worth a listen, & this is a great one. I would love if you checked out another "deep cut" from the "On the Night" live album, "Private Investigations". It. Will. Blow. You. Away. Soooooooo good. 😃👍🏻
check out ,, SPEEDWAY.. mark recreates the motorway raceway.. not too many have tried it.. my fave is with emmy lou
Please react to “Money For Nothing” Dire Straits/Sting (Live Aide 1985). Fantastic!
Private Investigations from the same live performance. You won’t be disappointed
I have to say this!! This track is actually much much better than Brothers in Arms!!
Telegraph Road. Studio version please.
Dug it. Thank you.😊
Here they sound almost Pink Floyd ish
For more Dire Straits greatness at this caliber, check out "Private Investigations" live at Wembley Stadium.
Very different from this but equal in greatness.

Money for nothing is a must!
Telegraph road DIRE STRAIT
😅😅😅😅😅😅
Yer...properly upset millions saying this. But Don't bother with the studio versions, over the years of playing their songs on stage, they have just made them looonger and better.
Love this!
