Uyghur food is from western China, in Xinjiang province, home to China's largest muslim ethnic group. Their take on Chinese food is a world apart from what you get in most provinces in China, with it having more similarities with middle eastern cuisine than any other. The use of lamb, hand pulled noodles, and many other delicious dishes make this one of our favorite cuisines in China. We go on a journey to see if we can find authentic Uyghur food in the USA.

Thanks for exposing me to uyger food! Before this I thought Chinese food was just noodles and dumplings. As a Muslim I also appreciate another source of halal to tell my friends about. As far as the alcohol is concerned, Muslims are prohibited from drinking and serving alcohol but I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you brought your own. BYOB could be fun in that situation! Make a game of pretend hiding it from the staff as you pass it around under the table. That's what we did as teenagers 😉!

The real reason why WEST media falsely accuses CHINA of mistreating Uyghur Muslims is because they want to prevent the 1.6 Billion Chinese worldwide and 2.0 Billion Muslims from working together. Both these groups have been discriminated by USA and the WEST for decades and are more likely to work together. Chinese & Muslim nations working together will lead to US losing its dominance of the world. Plus this will gain Asia, Russia and African support too including the rest of the world.

I ordered the same dishes that Winston and Matt did and I can say that the food was even better IMO than this video made it out to be... I ordered the small plates and it fed 2 people easily. I'm scared to see their large portion sizes!! It's probably a 2.5 to 3 $$$ range but you can look at their menu online by searching for them using either google Maps or Yelp. DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED AND WILL BE GOING BACK AGAIN SOON. LOOK FOR MY REVIEW ON YELP ONCE I GET THE TIME TO POST ONE.

The people from Xinjiang province aren't middle eastern, they're central asian. Central asians are a different racial group who are native to the central asian steppes. They have middle eastern and arabic culture because islamic missionaries went north and converted them. Other central asian countries include Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and kyrgyzstan. They have more in common with the Mongols than the Chinese. The Turks in Turkey and the Turkmen of Turkmenistan actually originate from Xinjiang province, although after centuries of intermixing they hold very little of their original central asian genes and are now a mixture of Caucasian and middle eastern and middle eastern respectively.

UB3RFR3NZY ^^^This! Good summary. I wish people knew a bit more about this region. Too many people wrongly group them all up as Arabs, even though they're not semetic. It's a multi ethnic region, but in general, (if I'm not mistaken, I'd be happily corrected), Central Asians are ethnicly "Northern Mongols" (for lack of a better term), West Asians from Turkey + Caucasus + Iran are Aryans, West Asians from the Fertile Crescent + the Arabian Peninsula are Semites, and North Africans + Horn of Africa are Hamites.

    • @xingmengliu9512

No, Mongols are Tibetan Buddhists, not muslims. The look exactly like East Asians, not central Asians. Mongolian language has a lot in common with Korean rather than Turkish. The only thing central asians have in common with Mongols is their nomadic lifestyle.

There are hundreds of shows where people go to restaurants and comment on the food yet you manage to transcend the absolute majority of them. Your ability to speak factually about the various dishes, their history, your personal experience and then compare/contrast them with authentic dishes is what elevates your show.
I was concerned that this would be another insipid food tasting experience but I’m absolutely loving every episode. Simply amazing. Keep it up!!

Those Uyghur noodles are called “lagman” and are popular all over Central Asia- Xinjiang, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. “La Mian” must be the Chinese word. Lagman is the more common term amongst speakers of Turkic languages. When we were sort of “stranded” in Ürümqi after flight cancellations we explored a bit and met Uyghurs at the market. My wife is Kazakh and was able to understand Uyghur language because it is very similar to Kazakh.

Hey, if only it wasn't true! For over 1,400 years *Moslem's* (I love using the old spelling! Does that piss you off? Good!) have been oppressing all others, and the Crusades were actually a defensive campaign to take back what had been stolen from them!
Can you tell everyone what *Dhimmi* means?
Can you tell everyone what *Jizyah* means?
Can you tell everyone what a *Janusary* was?
Can you tell everyone what *Bacha-Bazi* means?
Can you tell everyone what *Tarikh Gamelah* means?
      Does this make you uncomfortable?
      Are you starting to squirm?
Does this destroy your whole argument?
Oh, and for people who beat-away *Moslem's* , and you relating them to Nazi's, did you know that PLENTY of *Moslem's* willingly joined the Waffen SS in Yugoslavia in a division called 13th Handschar?

Average Turkish people should be able to understand %60-%70 of Uyghur language right away. When I listened to an Uyghur song the first time, I was amazed that I could understand what it says. I believe if I go to the Uyghur region, I can communicate them without any problem.

Panzer Blitz. Most Chinese Muslim food are not uyghur food. If you see 清真 on a restaurant, it means halal. They are food of 回 hui people who are descendants of Arab traders in 10th century and Chinese. They look just like any other Chinese after the Arabic genes were diluted for a millennium.

My chinese fiancée is from Xinjiang, went there last year, it was truly amazing food, although I do prefer chinese food much more. Also all her family (ethnic Chinese) was very proud of the Uighur food, they made it very clear it’s from their province and definitely a kind of chinese food, just different, but yes, they too are very critical of islam.

Im a muslim and just to clarify our beliefs regarding food and drink: we dont eat pork or anything made from it, we cant consume blood, we cant eat anything dead like not taken care of properly first by the butcher, and we dont drink any kind of alcohol. Just thought id clarify since ur video title was saying what is “muslim” food as many people are oblivious to that. Great vid as always. Im curious though u said u dont enter far west to shoot the weager areas and so as they may kick u out?! Why is that? O_o

    • @sicfuc449
      @sicfuc449 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's Uyghur not weager bro. Chinese communist government doesn't allow foreigners to shoot videos there. Don't you know how China treats it's muslim population ? There is a strong separatist movement there. Google Uyghur oppression for more information.

David, just like every religion, there are various sects of Islam all with varying systems of belief, tradition, and culture. They aren't a monolith. Just like in Judaism where some sects are very strict about keeping kosher, and others may only do it on major holidays, etc..

I visited Xinjiang in 2016. The capital Urumqi is a very polluted city and rapidly growing. It had 3.5 million 2016, up from 1 million about 10 years ago. It feels more like central Asia than China. There is a high speed rail link. A metro system is being built. There will be 5 million people in a few years. Xinjiang province is a sea of wind farms and solar farms everywhere. My favourite city in Xinjiang is Turpan, a small city of 200,000 at China's lowest elevation below sea level. It feels very Mediterranean in character and Mediterranean type of crops being grown including grapes for wine.
Xinjiang is rapidly becoming a front door to China rather then a back lot with the opening of the new silk road. The Chinese government has a plan for an 1,100 km water tunnel to turn the Taklamakan Desert into another irrigated California Valley by taking water from Tibet. The evidence of development is everywhere in Xinjiang.
Winston and Matt have said they will not go there but I would love to see a "Conquering Western China" video.
