so salt over the shoulder...
in roman times salt was a from of currency
so to spill it was like dumping your wallet out by accident.
so you pinch some and toss it over your shoulder to show you arent poor. and that good fortune smiles on you that you have so much to spill.. like not picking up some pennies if you spill you change..
thats why " take it with a pinch of salt" means what it means.. " like its probably not true. but here's a bit of salt so lets let it pass.."
no 4 in Japan is ALSO bad luck because the western 4 resembles the Kanji for death
so no one wants the 4th parking spot or 4th toilet stall or apartment no 4 In Japan
China contacted me.
They wanted to invite you both back immediately.
Lol 😂😂😂😂😂
You may enter but never leave lol😢😂😂😂😂😂
Surfshark doesn't let you cancel on the web, had to reach out to support to cancel mine. VPN is also not a silver bullet, it just prevents your ISP and others on the same wifi from seeing the only domain name of the websites you visit. You trade that to Surfshark seeing it, and the ISP seeing that you connect to Surfshark. A lot of marketing around VPNs are deceptive and often outright lies.
Wait, what? Are you guys back in China now?
I remember these vids from years ago, so happy even if it’s a rerun, please keep posting the Moto vids
Yes they should definitely keep these reuploads going to keep the channel alive until they're able to travel and create some original content again
Honestly, these are the only episodes I watch. The format of two guys behind the counter is over done and boring to watch compared to this.
Me too
These were done before Winston had his hair transplant.
It's impressive how C-Milk and Commander Shepard are able to sneak in an out of China so fast, then do a podcast, safely out of the country. Great work!
that is old footage, you do realize right?
@@tristambre632 I think this was a sarcastic comment implying they should make that more clear
i assume you mean Cute-Milk and Commander of the podcast Shepard 😎
@tristambre No way, really?
DDDUUUHHHH
As a Taiwanese I can say that is definitely not a Temple. The whole building is an old house for a big family of probably over 20 people, and what's in the back-middle is the ancestral hall of the family.
Temples are for gods, we usually wouldn't call our ancestors "gods." They are not as high in the hierarchy.
Still overall you have learned a lot about Chinese culture and comprehended them correctly.👍
There are parts of the NE US where you can find large old houses from when families were numerous. It seems haunting but maybe just changing demographics in both US and China. Thank you for your insight
More like a shrine
Temple is for worship.
In some cases you worship gods.
In this case they worship ancestors (Confucianism)
@@martinhawes5647 You know, I suspect the OP knows that.
@@guacre2675 He didn't make it very clear if he did.
This it the type of content I subscribed to this channel for.
i remember this one. videos like this are what got me watching you guys back in the day!
Man I miss adv china from back in the day. Thanks for posting this blast from the past!
Can confirm that there are temples everywhere in Taiwan! I have at least 5 ornate temples within a kilometer of my apartment.
Number 13, one of the potential reasons: On a Friday the 13th in medieval times in Europe (October 13th, 1307), the Knights Templar were destroyed by French King Philip IV with the support of the Vatican. Rome saw them as dangerous and competition, the French king was broke and needed money. So his armies sacked all the Templar holdings, took all the gold and gave the prisoners to the church for torture to get false confessions.
Now this is one of several potential reasons for this day and number combination.
And of course, it's history, who knows how much of it was ever true.
It also has to do with Judas being the 13th deciple of Jesus. Since he betrayed and killed himself, Now there are only the 12 deciples
That’s not the reason. Friday is just an anglo thing. In spain its tuesday the 13th that’s unlucky.
"The number 13 may be associated with some famous but undesirable dinner guests. In Norse mythology, the god Loki was 13th to arrive at a feast in Valhalla, where he tricked another attendee into killing the god Baldur. In Christianity, Judas - the apostle who betrayed Jesus - was the 13th guest at the Last Supper."
13 likes.... nice
Mirrors used silver for the reflective coating, hence why vampires (and I'd assume other monsters as well) were supposed to not have a reflection (it would purify the light to say).
But, it also made them quite expensive.
13 is the number of knots in a hangman's knot.
This one just feels like a blast from the past, seeing the ancient buildings is thrilling but tragic how few are left. It’s those kind of buildings everyone is interested to learn and experience the Chinese culture.
What? China is filled with these buildings.
@@PhillipGregoryMusic That they are actively destroying by placing in cheap sky risers. The government in the last 10 years has been rampant in bulldozing villages to rebuild a metro city on top. Sure there are some left, likely in thanks to how big the country is, but there is little care or consideration to preserving these ancient buildings.

C-Milk with the championship hair in this video! Lookin' cool as a cucumber! I hope you all have a lot more of this kind of footage to keep releasing - very interesting stuff! Thoroughly enjoyed the video!
I missed these videos so much. It’s depressing to think how you’re guys lives were basically destroyed in front of us.. just glad you made it out together
It's always so fun to watch you guys riding around China !
The number 4 is also cursed for the same reason in Japan, did you know?
I love it when you find some old unseen episodes to release 😊
Unfortunately this is a repost and the footage is part of another video uploaded 8 years ago.
13 is unlucky for a couple of reasons - firstly, because that's how many were at the Last Supper, secondly is because it's associated with the moon in a primarily solar culture - 13 lunar months in a year, vs 12 solar months - it's the symbolism in the Sleeping Beauty story - the King invited the 12 wise women, but spurned the 13th (symbolising embracing a solar value over a lunar), the 13th was the one who laid the curse..they're the two main reasons for 'unlucky 13'...
Best joke ever about mirrors, from the great comedian Stephen Wright: "I broke a mirror. I'm supposed to get seven years bad luck but my lawyer thinks he can get me four."
Would love to see you guys riding bikes again like the old days. I don't care what country you do it in. Could be Thailand. Could be Mexico. Could be Philippines. Could be USA. It doesn't matter. I just want to see new videos of you guys exploring the world again.
They have a family now so its alot harder now for them. I think we have to let loose sometimes nothing lasts for ever
@@MitsukiHashiba True, it just sucks though. The motorcycle vids were such a vibe. Just something I could always turn on and be in like a trance looking at the scenery while they talk. Since I'm disabled with a bad back, I could never go out exploring on a bike like that myself. So it was my window into that world, a way for me to kind of explore with them from home.
But yeah having children definitely changes things... probably shouldn't be taking unnecessary risks anymore.
I am on my third motorcycle thanks to those old videos.
Salt is an offering to the spirits for good luck, under the ladder is you might knock it over.

Old school vid! ❤
What a nostalgic episode, I was wondering if the north of China has more foreign development and maybe that's why the superstition surrounding the number four isn't as prevalent? Just a thought.
It may also be because they're proper rather than superficial Buddhists and see death as one step of the journey.
The superstition comes from the similarity of pronunciation of 四 (4) and 死 (die).
The pronunciations vary by language and region, so it could be that in the northeast and whatever region you’re thinking about specifically, these pronunciations could be slightly different.
Same superstition exists in Japan, concerning the number four. Thanks for the video
The thing with chopsticks is the same in every Asian country too. Not just in China.
All superstitions are illogical and a waste of emotional energy , and your time and money.
Love seeing you guys in the old times. Been following you since 2015. Been to China twice after viewing your videos. I guess we all have different experiences depending on what you do China! SERPENTZA for the win!!!
These vids are more fun than your others. I remember hearing about two white guys who lived in China riding around China unescorted. This was in 2014? During my year long solo wiggle all around most of the Philippines larger islands. My goals during all my rides have been, besides general adventure touring were to climb/hike some of the places highest peaks, scuba dive its best sites, and meet + its girls! I used datin g sites to meet girls online initially, then I already knew girls in far flung towns and cities. Obviously, to use a YEAR to ride 18000 miles in the Philippines, I traveled very slowly. I tried to retire there but only could tolerate it for four years. During these years I also rode small moto's and scooters around gorgeous Taiwan, Vietnam wiggling north to south with lots of Laos & Cambodia, Much of northern Thailand, all over Nepal, a lap around Sri Lanka, and four trips to ride all over most of Indonesia, my favorite country in SEA. I rode around most of Borneo, all Sulawesi, the island chain from Flores to Bali, across horrible Java, even the length of fabulous Sumatra, my favorite island. Fun and Adventure!
That sounds fantastic!
That's awesome. How would I go about doing this? How did you make money to fund these travels?
It's my dream to travel around SEA learning martial arts like Eskrima and Silat but I honestly don't know how to pull it off since I'm broke, so I'd appreciate any advice you have to offer. Cheers
This is the episode with random chickens and super mean geese!

The government has really called things more difficult for its citizens, and we can't sit back and bear all the consequences of the bad governance. It's obvious we are headed for inflation,it is always the poor who take the hit.

Apparently, this video is an old one from when they were more objective and factual. They were absolutely gold! I remember when I checked every day for new episodes from Serpentza ages ago.
I have to hong hong hong the boys & ask them for their sources for these superstitions!!! 😂😂
A superstition that I grew up with in the UK was... Don't accept the third light from a match when you are lighting your cigarette.... It supposedly comes from the war where a sniper would see the match spark up and watch it go to the second man so he could line up and shoot the third. I know a lot of older men swore by it and would blow it out before it got to them if the guy with the match forgot to.
Interesting. Thanks for that!
Easy fix: don’t smoke
@@martinhawes5647 When you're ankle deep in shit, piss and blood in a trench soaked through to the skin with bullets flying over your head and bombs exploding all around and your only recent memories are the faces of your fellow brothers who died in battle. With deaths hand on your shoulder waiting to pull the life from you... during times of calm, smoking a cigarette is your only release from the total insanity around you.
I heard the same “3 on a match” being bad luck, or risked being spotted, BUT also heard that the whole thing was started by match companies to sell more matches.
@@Itried20takennames haven't heard about the match company thing. Although it is possible I also think the war one has a ring of truth about it.
Wow man it's nice to see an old school ADV video.

This was SO cool to see! I lived in rural Japan from 1998-2001, and rode my motorcycles through little villages. It was awesome - so nostalgic to see you guys doing the same thing in China in a similar time.
Now I mentioned this before, but if you like temples, you have got to go to Shikoku, where i lived, and ride the 88 Temple circuit created by Koboudaishi. It will be something you cherish for life.
This is a re-upload this has been uploaded on ADVChina before
I'm from China, and I want to say that China has a huge wealth gap. The skyscrapers in Shanghai represent China, but so do the impoverished villages in the west. Your video objectively reflects the not-so-glamorous side of China👍
It would better if you guys in a China could just live normal, free lives without worrying about the government censoring 85% of the country because….they are embarrassed or they”eradicated” poverty? Every time I come across China related videos it reminds me of how shameless the CCP is. The fact that videos like this are”rare” or denounced most of the time for not “telling the story of China well” is absurd. I’m glad you would rather have an accurate and truthful video instead of dishonest show filled with disinformation. The fact that the CCP and surprising # of web-wumao don’t want to see an uncomfortable truth needs to remind people about the CCPS sham,Ed’s character. Any Country that signs a deal with China (CCP) is crazy to think that the CCP will actually follow up on their end of the agreement. Stupid western leaders just rip the bandaid off.
Wow. Content under 30 mins! Congrats! Now I will watch again! Thank you
the skits were so cute, love y'all
The knights templars were all arrested on Fri the 13th so I believe it relates to that.
yes
No. Definitely not. Tuesday the 13th in other euro countries. The day has no relevance
@@matalostodos At dawn on Friday, October 13, 1307, scores of French Templars were simultaneously arrested by agents of King Philip, later to be tortured in locations such as the tower at Chinon, into admitting heresy and other sacrilegious offenses in the Order. Then they were put to death.
Timeless classic. I love the enactments of the superstitions. A re release for all the new fans!

I used to watch this a few years ago as well as serpentza and loahy86 It was great and I was learning so much about China, the culture, real life and politics I learnt about the hood and the bad. The travelling around the country was amazing

But Christ now it is just constantly trashing the country and culture. How many years can these guys keep churning over the same trash over and over , moaning and destroying the country when it already has its problems

13 as a cursed/badluck omen comes from unknown origins but seem to originate with 12 being a holy/fortunate number in many ancient traditions but adding a 13th to it ruins this symmetry.
What's clear is that it was cemented in the Christian tradition in medieval times with the arrest of the Knights Templars at Friday the 13 October 1307 which validated the cursed/badluck nature of the pre-existing superstition.
13 is unlucky in the west for something related to Christianity going back to the 12 apostles who followed Jesus Christ. The 13th apostle was Judas who betrayed Jesus.
Wasn’t Judas the most trusted apostle? That would make him the first apostle not the last 13th🤷🏻♂️
Should be 12 Apostles plus Jesus?
Dude this channel is so awesome. I’ve always wanted to see the ride adventures.

@@RickR69they’ve said multiple times on the podcast and on the bonus show the reason they don’t. It because they’ve posted videos of them doing Moto/driving in the US and they don’t get views or engagement. Don’t give anything relating to death to your parents as it means you want them to die. Something like funeral or cemetery brochures are samples of this.
Walking under a ladder gives you bad luck
Originally ladders only had one vertical length ( with 2 feet), leaning against a building. If you walked under, it could dislodge and send the person on it, tumbling or stranded on the roof.
the number thirteen is considered bad luck in the west because of the of friday the thirteenth of october 1307. this is when the knights templar were ordered arrested and prosecuted by the french king who had borrowed money from them and was deeply in debt. unable to repay that debt and the prospect of seizing their vast stores of wealth, king philip IV thought he would get rich quick.

13 is not always unlucky in the West. Indeed, the American flag has 13 stripes. American dollar: eagle holds 13 arrows and 13 feathers. there are like a dozen other ways 13 has been incorporated in the dollar.

The number 13........why is that considered to be unlucky in the West ?
There are a few theories about this, including Judas being the 13th guest at the Last Supper.
There is a similar tale from Norse mythology about Loki (the Norse god of mischief) being the 13th guest (and an uninvited one at that) to arrive at a banquet.
And there is also the mass arrest of the Knights Templar on Friday, October the 13th, 1307 by officers of King Philip IV of France.
Funny how they name the stadium the birds nest when birds are an endangered species in China lmao
