I made a community post regarding the "Agreement With Mea" yesterday. Just let u know the version I put in the description is just a translation. "Don't chat with other audiences during the live stream" is not a rule discriminating oversea viewers but these same rules apply to everyone, her Japanese viewers and her Chinese viewers on Bilibili as well. You may feel confused due to culture difference becuase other patforms may not have similar rules but this is applied for a lot of Vtubers not only Mea. Vtubers, when they do chatting streams they depend on the comment section to develop and continue their talk, flouding the section with completely unrelevent or unreadable comments will create problems. It's not saying that you can't comment in English but if you choose English, make it short and simple, make it grade school English so she can understand. And like she said, it would be wonderful if you go through google translate and copy paste the JP translation. The most important is Pls DO NOT sell virtural subway or taco bell like what happened in her 6.11 karaoke stream's comment section, I'm not making these clips to ruin her stream or make her headache.

What's saddening to me, is that one guy is over here simping for mea so hard, that the guy that is trying to translate the literal thing she is saying is not being heard because the one guy is too busy being lustful. Translator: She said "I like it when you guys give me money and are willing to learn Japanese for me" Even though it was most likely just in a joking manner, that is LITERALLY what she said. Simps response: "Nah, my perfect online wholesome waifu would NEVER say anything like that, because she isn't human and totally wouldn't do that". I swear, it's saddening how many people put these idols (and just youtubers in general) on some sort of pedestal and forget that we're all human in the end. The same way I can't be bothered to watch their streams because I have no idea what is being said, hence why I love these translated ones so much, she also can't be bothered to try and translate every single english comment that rolls down the screen. Anyway, apologies for the rant.

The comment on my head say some straight *FACT* for me most of the time i didnt catch the stream cause i always stick with Nijisanji ID or Hololive ID cause they can speak english and it just feel more chilling to understand what someone say. This is why all of us love vtuber translator community for translating all of this clip.

      Exactly.
Also, as you could see in the video, English comments take up a lot of space (~16 letters= 1 line). On average most of the Japanese comments only take up 1-2 lines, but a proper English sentence could easily take up to 3-4 lines, so it's advisable to forgo perfect grammar if you are planning on commenting in English.
Just as we aren't obligated to learn Japanese, Mea isn't obligated to learn English.
My advices for watching her streams are: if you really feel the need to express yourselves at certain moments, just learn some basic stream slangs like 草(lol) or かわいい (cute) or お疲れ様でした(thank you for the stream). When in Rome, do as the Romans do, right? And if you really feel motivated to learn Japanese for her, why not? At the end of the day it benefits you too.

      Understandably so.
I can't speak Japanese at a decent enough level to feel comfortable commenting using it during streams and Google Translate is both unreliable and slow if you just want to say something as a quick reaction to what was said or smth like that... so I just don't comment at all unless it's something *really* simple.
I find it incredibly annoying that the vast majority of English comments that appear in almost any VTuber's streams (there are some exceptions I won't mention here):
      1. Don't talk about the stream/VTuber in the first place.
      2. Often are just conversations between others like them or are just semi-random meme words spoken to seem funny to a few others who are like them.
      3. Clearly come from people who really just don't know even the basics of Japanese and yet come there to spam the chat with those comments anyway (sometimes even further spamming shit like "what did she just say??", "what is she laughing about, plz help???!!!"
      4. Are translations for the retards mentioned in [3]. It's pointless. I don't care if you appreciate them or something, they are (sometimes poor even) translations often for things like puns/jokes that the VTuber said and it makes no sense to explain a joke with such a delay in the first place. Imagine watching an anime with subtitles that are delayed by like 20+ seconds... Pointless.
I absolutely despise the saying "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all", but in this case, seriously - "If you don't have anything valuable or at the very least _understandable_ to the streamer to say, don't say anything at all".
Even if the comments don't annoy the VTuber, they definitely annoy a lot of the other, normal viewers/commenters.
      Just fucking 空気を読め motherfuckers.

Commenting in english xan also be fine, depending on tge vtuber. Towa f.e. got the whole "big kusa" thing going, or korone actively calling for english viewers with her "hey guys".
So far Ayame's chat has been the most balanced i've seen. English comments are few and usually to the point. • @guyra4298

Ahh the good old "Japanese Virtual youtubers might totally hate english comments on their chat" kind of argument.
First things first different Vtubers might feel different towards their english speakers, just because one streamer feels uncomfortable with english comments filling up the chat doesnt mean the other vtubers will too.
Some streamers ignore them, others sometimes pay attention to them (Very rarely though as Mea said), others might try to read it and communicate, and some legit try to attract and pay attention to english comments cuss those english comments are STILL fans of the Vtuber.
it depends mostly on both how the Vtuber addresses those english comments and in turn dictate how the english comments in the chat will act.
Korone's chat for example, has both a massive Japanese and English fanbase but the majority of the English commenters understand the rules of the chat and Keep quiet in order to not disrupt the flow of the chat which, as much as some of us dont like to accept it, is majorly targeted for the Japanese audience, Korone thankfully at the end of everystream does address the english comments and gives them a little bit of attention which does make the viewers feel appriciated.
Fubuki's chat on the other hand, seeing as she's one of the most popular Vtubers out there and attracts a lot of new fans everyday thanks to her meme posting, and that ends up attracting english commenters that arent used to the concept of how Vtuber's streams work and how to be "Polite" to them. some come in trying to start a conversations with the streamer despite the streamer obviously not understanding english, or try to talk with other viewers in the chat room despite the rules clearly stating to not do so, and others straight up get mad when they get told to please follow the rules.
This will likely annoy some people, but please try to be polite to the streamer, this is a different culture from our own, we're guests and they have rules.
if you want an example think of it as us going to the house of a japanese person, they'll ask you to take off your shoes at the entrance, say thank you for the meal after you're served food, when the host is talking you lisen intently and not start any kind of conversation with other people around the house.... All of that is basically ignored when people go into a stream and do their own thing, which is incredibly rude in the eyes of some.

@John Bolden III From what i've seen the viewers tend to focus on the thing Korone is doing and don't break any of this ''rules'' (except when they are in the lobby before the streams starts), i've only seen one guy speaking spanish and one in english spamming in some streams but since there is a lot of people sending messages they just get swept by the current. And since Korone is completely chill with people typing in english the chat is a mix of 80% japanese and 20% english comments

Usually, Japanese chat likes to spam the same words when an event happens in the stream. You can copy and paste these common comments into google translate to find out what they mean. You can then save these words in notepad or something to use for references to give yourself more variety in things to say in chat. You could also just google translate what you want to say, just make sure to double check it so that when your sentence gets translated into Japanese, it retains the same meaning. Also, if the chat is going slow enough, you can actually google translate the entire chat.

I always have very mixed feelings on the overseas audience and Vtubers. Now mind you, I am a filthy foreigner and I don't actually speak Japanese either. I understand very rudamentary sentences and have to use google translate 90% of the time for anything written. But at least I try to get the gist of what a stream is about and what's going on however I can. Translate the stream title, translate some of the comments periodically, try to get a feel for what is going on. During chat streams I would mostly stay quiet and only occasionally react when it's obvious that something funny was said and everyone spams grass. Occasionally I try to use a translated Japanese phrase if I really feel like I can inform someone of something (especially smaller Vtubers).
The only times I feel comfortable making full English sentence comments is when the Vtuber is not really paying attention to the chat anyway (like during games) or when there is like an insane flow of comments and I get buried anyway. Sometimes making remarks on what's going on for other English readers who dont get it or talking about the game itself. Stuff that's on topic.
What I can't stand is when foreign viewers keep talking about irrelevant topics, have convos with each other as if it was a personal chatroom or constantly try to make the Vtuber "say something" or have a direct conversation with her... She doesn't understand you. Almost none of them do. And those who do tend to ignore English comments, because their main audience is Japanese and they dont always want to break the flow like that. And of course most of their questions show the insane disconnect that's going on because neither side understand the other. Vtuber talks about some interesting in depth topic and the comments say stuff like "How are you?" or "Can you speak Spanish?" and nonsense like that.
Speaking of Spanish people, those start flooding the comments too now... and many of them just want them to say swear words or acknowledge them. Ugh. At least it is semi-reasonable to believe that Japanese streamers know like... grade-school English, but I can gurantee you *they don't speak a lick of Spanish* .
And with the rapid growth that's happening, there is no way to properly teach these new audience members how it works. And many don't care either. As long as it fulfills their desire for attention and the novelty still hasnt worn off they will just bulldoze right through without any self-awareness. The worst is when someone tells them to read the rules and they feel *insulted* for the very idea that they have to follow them. They start calling people simps for daring to respect someone's wishes. It's toxic and pathetic.
It may sound like I am just pushing the problem away, but there *are* Vtubers that actively engage an English audience. Hololive ID & Nijisanji ID are all multi-lingual and can speak English. There are even some smaller American Vtubers like Kana Kimiko, who speak English exclusively. Wouldn't it be great to support someone who actually can interact with you? They can also tell you off directly, which really helps (lol). I am not saying to exclusively go to them, but damn it, the point of this whole business is to interact and understand each other. If you only watch them for the cuteness, then you can watch their translated clips, right? If you just wanna listen to their streams that's fine too. But this *non-interaction* both ways that just kinda inconveniences others has to be kept in check.

@Clinical Depression Completely faulty reasoning. The platform is international and English is not the dominant language at all. That is why you can change your language setting to dozens of other languages and that's why you have Japanese, Spanish, Italian and Russian communities on this site. What actually decides which domain you enter is the TH-camr's channel . If they are Japanese, then you should have the common sense to treat it as a Japanese channel and only interact with them in the capacity that they are comfortable with.
You are the kind of problematic fan that feels entitled because "we help them grow" and "we donate money". That is not the point. You can do both of these things while healthily engaging and growing the fanbase with respect. These kinds of terrible comments flooding their chats is an active detriment to their work. There is no excuse for it.
The fact that you utterly miss every point I made for your delusional "You are the problem" counter-steering is frankly insulting. I am not the type to discuss this shit with people in chat. Why do you think I said that I almost never write anything in chat in the first place? I do block and report. That doesn't change the fact that this is a problem that exists. Your indifference helps noone.
You have managed to project at least 3 things onto me just out of sheer ignorance. I do not gatekeep, I do not think Western culture is inferior (the opposite is actually the case, I dont like Japanese culture in broad terms) and I literally gave several alternatives to learning Japanese. If you can't read, don't reply.

I think the main question for you as an english viewer/commenter is: do you _want_ the Vtuber to _understand_ you? If yes, you have 4 (?) options, in order of involvment:
    1) Simple, short grade school english sentences or phrases (put through google translate for bonus).
    2) Learn some typically used phrases such as "kawaii" and "kusa". (Romaji option)
    3) Learn kana, get an IME and use that for phrases from (2). There are many free resources out there for this. Bonus if you learn specific kanji to use like 草.
    -4) Actually learn Japanese-
That's not to say english comments are somehow worse. I'd argue that if the Vtuber can understand it, an english comment can show interest from overseas viewers. In Mea's case, she might not speak back in english, but clearly she has an interest since she's tried to read comments on translated clips.
If you don't care then, why even bother commenting lol?

Japan have a very low emigration rate. Countries with high emigration rate tends to have their citizens learn the english language so they can move to western countries.
English tests in most japanese schools are based on memorization that`s why only those who hire personal tutors can speak english fluently because they can actually have someone correct their pronounciation. After graduating highschool, there`s really no need for english in japan except if someone wants to live in another country.

Some people in this comment section going like ''How disrespectful do you have to be to talk amongst yourselves'' have probably never interacted with a small streamer. The only people that even have the privilege to make a rule like that are big Vtubers that don't have to give a damn about viewer retention. Every smaller streamer, vtuber or not, tries to get the viewer to turn the stream into a personal hangout spot, because that's how you get people to come back. And that's not a twitch thing, that's as much a youtube streaming thing, or a facebook streaming thing, or a mixer streaming thing. If anyone is going to try and tell me that Japanese streamers, even with 2 viewers, enforce rules against talking amongst oneself then please enlighten me how Japanese streamers actually build a community and grow.
