Turtles are reptiles of the order Chelonii or Testudines, characterised by a special bony or cartilaginous shell developed from their ribs that acts as a shield. "Turtle" may either refer to the order as a whole, or to particular Turtle which make up a form taxon that is not monophyletic.
Real Turtle Care Guide - Appropriated sized aquarium ( 10 gallons for every inch of the turtles shell ) - Food ( Pellets, Live, Freeze Dried, and Frozen ) - Filtration - Turtle dock ( Make sure there is enough room for the turtle to pull it's entire body out of water ) - Basking bulb and lamp ( Over the turtle dock ) - Not a care tip but keeping a turtle is a commitment. The average lifespan of most turtle is 30+ years and they get big. - No TANKMATES!!! Turtle could either fight each other or eat any other creatures swimming around. - UV bulbs - Calcium and D3 Thats all i could think off but do some actual research.
I have a question. I have 2 turtles the same species for 5 years now. I would like to move them to a new aquarium with 2 new turtles, but I`m afraid that nothing bad happens to the new ones(the new are going to be the same species).
My snappers are expelling what looks like white ribbon dental floss coming out when he poops. He is getting really large very fast. I'm feeding him the best pellets and turtle food. He is definitely not losing weight. So probably not tape worm. What is this?
Be careful with a heater because if it's thermostat fails you can cook your turtles accidentally. Also an indoor tank should have room temperature high enough for them anyway,
You would need 200 gallon for when they are full grown. If you have the type of turtles in the video or a yellow belly slider then they will get 15 inches as adults and you HAVE to keep that in mind. Don't go out and get a 40 gallon tank because they will out grow it quick.
You shouldn't get a pet turtle if you can't afford the right tank size, food, filtration, or a spot for the turtle to get out on. Yellow bellies and red eared sliders for example get 15 inches as adults so you would have to have a very big tank. There's other cheaper options like a kitty pool as adults (not babies). A smart thing to start off with a tank. DO NOT use a 10 gallon, use more like a 40, then upgrade to a pond or kitty pool when they grow into adults. You also have to really be committed as they could live to 30 years or more depending on the type of your turtle.
Turtles are difficult to care for, and adults should reallly get a small pond or indoor tub rather than even large aquariums. They are the worst part of reptiles paired with the worst part of aquarium fish in terms of care. Their difficult is evidenced by the sheer number of surrendered turtles that rescuers, zoos, etc. get. I just think this video isn't making this clear, and that's honestly too many turtles for only a 20 gallon tank, especially considering how much they'll grow. They can be engaging pets, but just understand how difficult they can be. I'll honestly point inexperienced kids and their families toward a snake or lizard instead. I hate to nag, but there are a lot of surrendered turtles or ones just released into nonnative ranges.
A lo-flow filter is needed for babies and all filter intake mechanisms need to be covered with a grid or egg crate to prevent the baby from drowning. Females can grow up to 9-12" and can weigh up to 5lbs. Captive turtles should never be released here's why: 1) Captive turtles may spread diseases to wild turtles 2) Captive turtles may not be able to acclimate to the wild and die 3) Red-eared sliders especially are considered invasive in many states such as CA. Basically they are NOT A NATIVE SPECIES and they will compete with native turtles. In some states there is a policy to euthanize non-native species found in the wild.
This is a bad video....you should never use plastic plants. The turtles will see green and might bite into them. You should remove this video to help protect turtles. People may accidentally think this guy knows what he is saying.
INCREDIBLY irresponsible video from the get go. These turtles grow to about 12 inches long and are a 40-50 YEAR commitment. They will outgrow THIS tank within 3-4 MONTH'S. If you're planning on getting a Red eared slider get a tank that they will end up needing, 100-120 gallons minimum! They are incredibly hard work, a TON of maintenance and attention. He keeps using the term "baby turtles" to lure in young children who are in NO WAY prepared to cares for these precious reptiles! Shame on you!! Do NOT get one of these turtles based on THIS video, too many Turtles are abandoned, homeless and die every year because people thought they were "Cute baby turtles!"
a plastic plant lasted 2 days in my turtles tank before she destroyed it i prefer no fake plants with turtles just a suggestion if your just starting don't use plants.
We had 2 baby turtles in a tank smaller than this for a few months, then moved to a larger tank 5 months on then a 6ft long x 3ft wide tank a year on, then now there in a MASSIVE pond, almost like a mini lake :') and we're breeding them this year!
This is incorrect. If you plan on getting a turtle.. make sure you get a gallon per inch of shell. You need a filter that has the capacity to filter double the amount of water. For instance, if you have a 40 gallon, get a filter with the capacity to filter 80 gallon. They need a basking light. They NEED a UVB light for shell health.. No gravel and no rocks that would fit in their mouths, it causes impactions/death. Perfect water temp is 82*. Turtles are opportunistic eaters, if you over feed they will develop pyramid shells. If someone has questions I’d more then happy to help. I’d rather people get the right info and have happy, healthy turtles
I'm planning on getting a Texas map turtle (male) as the max size as an adult is about 4.5 inches. I can pretty much get away with it living in a 40 gallon tank for its lifes span (though i would probably want to get a bigger one just bcuz i want to give it more space). My question is, since musk turtles rarely ever leave the water and its considered a bottom dweller (i know i have to provide the dock, light and uv light regardless) and as an adult they are the same size as the Texas map turtle, can they both live together in the same 40 gallon tank? Of not how many years in do i have to make the upgrade? Thanks. I have yet to get any turtles yet, just doing lots of research.
maarij hassan in the first 30 seconds, yes it does in his title banner. Plus, keeping turtles healthy and in adequate environment is not as easy as you seem to think.
maarij hassan too some degree yes. turtles outgrow thier tanks, are extremely messy and need to be cleaned very frequently. not too mention thier diet, finding a vet that can deal with them, calcium deficiencies, disease, the fact that all too often they are released to the wild even thought they are considered an invasive species to many parts of the world once they grow too large to manage. And they are a lot of work as far as basic up keep.
@kidz style that is completely wrong. Depending on the type and size of your turtle is how much water you put in. ANY baby turtle only needs a couple inches of water. Add more as they get bigger you add more water but NOT 10 gallons an inch. For my baby alligator snapping turtle I only have about 3 inches of water in the tank so he could just stretch his neck up to get air. I suggest you have no more then 4 inches for a baby turtle.
10 gallons for the enclosure per inch is a recommended minimum for red eared sliders. This rule doesn’t apply to all turtles. Something like a 4 inch musk turtle could go in a 20 gallon.
In the beginning they said use glass or a plastic tank. Plastic is bad because the basking light can melt the plastic and release toxic fumes
I like turtles
Same

U read my mind

if i wanted to get 2 turtles around 2 inches, what size tank do I need? What size tank will I need when they are full grown?
Ryan Siegel you would need around 200 gallons not 20

I have a question when you buy a turtle do you immediately feed the turtle or not yet only twice a day? I need answers so I may get a turtle
+Valentine Munar it's not that important, as long as you feed them twice a day in the right amount, don't over or underfeed them
+Dzem Thank you very much I will note that to myself
Valentine Munar when you first get it you let it get used to its environment two to three days then you feed it.
Get a painted turtle or musk..
red ear sliders are Pond turtles..
Is one turtle in a 10 gallon tank (51.3, 26, 35 are the dimensions) Is that okay for a baby turtle? Until i can find a bigger one.
ragedmongle The rule is that per every inch the shell of the turtle is you'll need 10 inches
I keep 2 turtles in a 30 gallon tank. Is that ok or too small?
If they are both 1 inch or and inch and a half it is good
Thanks
once they mature and become adults your going to need something much bigger like a turrtle tub.
Ok. I alr plan for that
What are some good beginner turtles?

What is a water turtle call them aquatic turtles.
Semiaquatic

20 is too small. Think about yourself as the ''water turtle'' living in a small bathroom for your whole life.
20 isn't to small for those turtles but then they get bigger it will be
when they grow up to full adult size
yes
