Haydn Brown that's awesome take on the turtle care. I remember have them when I was a kid, they died as I didn't know about how to care for them. My Daughter got 2 Red Eared Slider Turtles for Her birthday and To be honest I thought it was easy to take care of them But I'm doing my Research and Your Vídeos Have Helped A LOT! I'm going to get Proper Care for them! Thank You!!!!
i've found that nothing makes a better basking area than some pieces of chopped wood. my red ear slider went years without proper basking because he was too heavy for floating docks. a few months back i took some log pieces and put them into one corner of his tank directly below his light. ever since i did this he has been eating better and remaining much more active. he's been on a diet of fruits and pellets too. i find that nothing works better for him than the logs and fruits. even his colours have become more vivid
Good thing I found this video by pure consistence. Been thinking about getting turtles since I was little. I like turtle tanks way better than fish tanks.
I've had a turtle for two years, they really aren't that expensive or hard to take care of. Just buy a uva/uvb light, large tank, heater, filter, and different rocks and safe decorations to make the tank seem natural.
Although it is true that turtles do need proper UV lights, turtle shells naturally shed and grow with their body since they don't switch shells, so the shedding is normal but it is important to have a proper UV light.
This video was super helpful!! I am giving away my guinea pig to my moms friends guinea pig farm and I am trying to convince my parents to get me a turtle so just in case if I get a turtle I have been watching a bunch of videos and reaserching. But anyways this video was super helpful.
this video was extremely helpful!!! I've had my RES for 2 weeks and the pet shop where I bought him from did not have the proper basking area and there really wasn't anywhere for him to bask. And I noticed when i got him , He has a lot of white patches all over his shell. It's not spongy or 'soft' like. and no odor. i was told ''it'll go away''. so I'm assuming its not shell rot, But deficiency from no basking. and the tank i was given, is only 10 gallons. and my RES loooovvesss to swim, so i'll be buying a big enough tank. he's 4 inches long. so glad i found this video!
Morgan Gabrielle Wow. Yeah 10 gallon isn't large enough for even a 1 inch baby turtle! Pet store employees should *never be trusted*. Always research if you want a pet. Then, research more. Then setup tank/cage. Then get the pet a few days or weeks later. A 4inch turtle needs at least 40 gallons. But, RES can get 12 inches. You really need a 125 gallon or larger tank. Like all aquatic pets and fish, tank should be setup and running at least 2 weeks before adding aquatic life to cycle properly. Turtles are some of the worst cared for pets. They should live 50+ years, but sadly, most don't make it past a few years, due to poor care. Work on getting a 100+ gallon tank setup correctly.
i’ll take your advice, because it seems like you know more than what the pet shop was telling me; i just ordered the 100 gal last night and once it arrives, i’ll get it set up, and have it run for at least 2 weeks. then, i’ll go ahead and transfer him to the bigger tank. i’m SO glad i found this video! thank you dearly!!!
I've had my three RES turtles for 10 Years! They outgrew three tanks and now they live in a pond in my backyard. I wouldn't recommend them for beginners unless you are ready for a lot of time and work ahead of you!
Aww I'm glad he is with you now because he'll live his rest of live healthy and happy :) I'm considering getting a turtle ! I have a beardie now so I want my turtle to be as healthy as my lizard!
My uncle and I have kept and bred more than ten species of turtles with just outdoor ponds and giant plastic tubs without filter or UVB globes, just plain sunlight. One time, we purchased a heater and filter, and we end up with turtles with the same condition as when we keep them in tubs. I am NOT saying this to tell you to not use UVB globes and all of the equipment. I suggest you to use them as they yield better results, well at least for most people.
Awesome videos! My UV lamp is currently over the ramp to the docking area i.e. shallow water. My turtle is probably half way submerged in this place and she does hang out there quite a bit to rest. Is this good or should I move it next to the heating lamp? If you could address nesting for turtles that would be helpful. Does my female RES need a sandy area in case she lays unfertilized eggs or will she be healthy without? Can I have a separate tank prepared? I have an (estimated) 15-20yr old 7 inch female RES. She is housed in 55 gallons with an above tank basking area I built. She is a rescue; I found her wandering outside and took her in after 3 days. Hence the 55gal but I hope to upgrade to a >120 gal next year. I am sad to hear about that peeling you showed in this video as she does have that. Thanks!
I am planning to put my three turtles in an open tub with water filled in it, having a good basking area in the sun and the potted plant for shade. I'll keep them outside of that tub in night and back again in the morning.
+Earthling1984 Can the turtles climb onto the platform itself or does it need a ramp or something to walk onto it? and what kind of platform should I use for the turtle to bask on?
RedBaron hello I have a 20 long tank there's a space in between the tank for the filter so I can not fully fill it which is fine I think my turtle doesn't like deep water . The tank is pretty small for it but it's all I could afford for now but if you can link me some rocks or a full rock type for it to climb on. It hasn't been in a tank for years probably 6 years never had lighting or any basking spot it's very rebellious of the whole basking thing doesn't understand it. My tank is a problem for some basking products because I can't fully fill the tank and it's kinda small in width so it can't fit big products I need some thing that will take up the width of it side to side and a good easy way to climb it
What about putting a musk turtle in a 125 gallon cichild tank . I would need a semi dry basking spot . would the uv light be bad for the fish and can the musk turtle do well in the water finally would they pick on each other much? great video please get back to me man
I was given a big painted slider from a family in town, it was a house turtle and roamed around, only in the water for feeding. this guy is big. I let him rogue around the house today and put him in a bin with a hot water bottle lol. I want him to do well.
Robert Beaudoin You will need to setup a proper tank of 100 gallons. It sounds like this turtle was never cared properly for. Sadly, this happens often with turtles. Although they can live 50+ years, they often live less than 10 years while suffering the whole time.
Ok so ive gotten a kiddie pool from out back, put water and a basking rock, Im keeping a hot water bottle in there, tomorrow after work im going to get a heat rock and the uv light. thank you for the video and the reply!! In a couple days Ill make a video examining him/her and my set up. He did eat which is a good sign I think....so far anyhow
Robert Beaudoin Also, turtles dont need heat rocks. Never use a heat rock or heat pad. Only heat lighting. You need a rock or piece of wood they can sit and bask on with proper temperature from your lighting. Test temperature and adjust lights as needed. Turtles need deep water and lots of room to swim. So make sure he has tons of swimming area.
good you showed this effect without uvb light, my led light provides heat when i checked it, and got a uvb light now, i dont think i need to get a light for warming, what you think?
With the filtration system, could you just wash out the filter and then put it back in, Or would you have to buy a new filter and completely replace it?
Just a couple of questions....you say do not do a complete water change were as most turtle keepers say do a complete change. What do you think? Is it correct to have two lamps on. One for heat and the other for UVB. Thank you. Colin from UK.
colin conman you never do a complete change with any aquatic creature; be it turtles, frogs, newts, fish, etc! NEVER! The water needs to go through a cycle and good natural bacteria grows on surfaces in the tank and the filter pads. If you do a full water change, the new water you put in will kill off any and all of that good bacteria, and it will be a brand new tank. Now the turtle poops, and ammonia gets in the water, and turtle dies! The good bacteria eat the ammonia, turn it into nitrite, then another form of good bacteria turn it into nitrate(nitrate is pretty safe, but should be kept low by doing 25% to 50% water changes once or twice a month). This is the reason, I hope you understand now.
I have a problem! I heard that turtles have salmonella and I want to buy a turtle but I'm afraid if I touch him I will get sick. I also don't know how to clean his tank! Help please!
I believe if the shell is under 1 inch in size, it will shed salmonella. But it doesn't after it grows larger than that size. I got mild salmonella poisoning once just from picking one up at the pet store. But yeah I read that somewhere, probably the wiki
we got a turtle from my husbands co worker and it shows signs of being overfed, so how often, how long do you feed your turtles? it was not kept in a tank that was large enough, and didn't have a basking area, we knew that and were fixing that, thankfully no signs of bacterial/fungal issues. he did have a UVB light so thats good. also what are your thoughts on canister filters? and canister filters with UV sterilizers? it looks like a red eared slider but without the 'red ears' what kind do you think it is?
I feed my turtles every other day just a few pellets. Most people feed way too much. Canister filters work great, as long as a good quality brand and rated for about twice the size of your tank. It may just be a RES or some other type of similar slider. Care for it like a common slider.
Ale Suarez I've had my turtle 6 years and he sheds every 6 months or so... I have 3 other adult female turtles I got about a year ago and they do it too. They have UVB and a heat lamp and on sunny days I put them outside in one of those plastic children's pools. I have 4 baby turtles too and they haven't done it but from what Ive read when they grow a few inches their shells will shed too.
Why do you need 10 gallons for every inch of turtle shell? Does this idea come from the way tanks are designed? Does the depth of water really matter or is it mostly the width of the tank? If I had a redear slider that is 12 inch in length, would it be ok to have a tank with dimensions of 48x19x19 totaling 75 gallons instead of having a tank that's 48x24x25 totaling 120 gallons or a tank that's 72x18x23 totaling 125 gallons.
+SweetVids007 It is an average of what you will need. Width and Depth are important. Turtle needs room to swim in all directions. Get the biggest tank you can.
I am thinking of buying a Musk turtle or a Map turtle. I was wondering which is easiest to care for and what is the cost for setting up the tank and buying the turtle? I would like it as cheap as possible as I am only 14 and don't have much money of my own.
I have watched a lot of your turtle videos... They helped me a lot. I was wondering if you knew why my turtles belly is fading. He gets fruit, pellets, shrimp, basically a variety of different foods. I don't have shell rot, and he isn't shedding. I cannot find this answer anywhere. My turtle also has both lights, heat, and sunlight. A 40 gallon tank. I don't know what I am doing wrong.
I remember have them as a pet when I was a kid, they died as I didn't know about how to care for them. I would say turtles should not be pet atleast for young people, unlike for other pets. Also displacing from their natural habitat to sell them to owners who would then struggle for creating a natural habitat. It seems a vicious cycle. I would rather go on a beach and see a turtle as a someone who is local than having the turtle as pet. Maybe we humans are fascinated about their lifespans. But I guess we should try to see what's best for them. As someone has said, "if you love someone set them free."
The first thing you should know in this video is don't leave your turtle on a table where you're not sitting right there! He'll walk right off of it. Sure they have shells but they can be damaged.
I just got a red-eared slider a week ago...he will not eat anything...not turtle food, worms, mill worms, nothing. I added water and he almost drowned...he could not get up to the top of the water. I watched him struggle for several minutes trying to get up to the top before I finally got him out. So, yes they can drown
Ok, so first, the tank should be setup at least a week before adding the turtle. Water needs to go through the nitrogen / biological cycle so good bacteria can start growing (which eat waste and uneaten food). Even a baby turtle needs a very large tank, I recommend at least a 40 gallon for a baby (but, you really should start with the tank the turtle will need as an adult. So, for something like a RES you should start with a 120 gallon or larger). Turtles are great swimmers. In the wild they go straight from hatching right into ponds, lakes, rushing rivers, huge oceans, etc.. The tank needs to be properly setup and have the proper temperature for the turtle species you have. You need proper water temperature, proper air / basking temperature. You need a 100% dry basking area with UVB light (this is the basking area that also needs to be of proper temperature). Everything needs to be setup in the proper ranges for the turtle species. Without a proper setup, the turtle can't thrive, or, survive very long.
Should I upgrade my turtle tank to a larger one with an internal filter? My RES is about 15cm long and is knocking the filter and heater of its suction cups regularly
I'm so proud of my ali snapper (we're releasing him in the spring). He's finally snapping. Is it normal for ali snappers and musks not to bask? My musk sometimes will just put the front of himself up to sleep, but that's it. Their food has plenty of D3, plus they spend a couple days each month with my sister's tortoise, who has the desert uv bulb.
It was when I was under 8 years old, about 15 years ago.. They were my mom's and sadly she didn't know that they needed basking spots with proper lighting so they both died. I'm not sure how long they both lived too.
I'm Planning on buying my wife her first exotic pet (specifically, a turtle). I wanna have a turtle for her by Mother's Day and I wanna get as informed as I can before I purchase. Can you help me out? I myself have never owned or cared for a turtle.
We saved our turtle off the road, like yesterday, and we have him in a little temporary tank (that's why I'm watching this right now). How can I tell what kind of turtle he is to take the right care of him?
+Duchess Glitterhoof Best thing to do is take that wild turtle to where you found it and put it near the closest water source. He is wild and has lived that way for years. Not fair to throw him in a tank now! His whole life would be instantly changed. If you want a turtle, research a lot first, then buy a captive bred turtle. One that has only lived in a tank ever, and that is all they know.
I use a mixed food source for my babies, I use dried river shrimp, dried crickets, dried mealworms, calcium pellets and veggies. Make sure to never give your turtle too much meat because their shell will pyramid (When the shell creates an irreversible pyramid on the scoots) and they'll surely be too unhealthy.
Hey there, I don’t know if you are still replying to comments but, I recently saved an Australian Murray Turtle from an abusive home. I just have a few questions that I’d love for you to answer. The turtle is stressing out a lot, is there any way I can calm him down? He was only fed about once a week, And only raw chicken, for about 5-8 years. How can I introduce him to new food? The old owner didn’t have a heat lamp or light that he ever turned on. He isn’t shedding and despite all that looks like he is in pretty decent health. I’ve put a little water heater in there for him. What can I do to help him eat? He hasn’t eaten in the hours that I’ve had him. He had barely any water in the tank they had him in. Should I slowly introduce him to lots more water or just put the recommended amount for his size in immediately? Thanks in advance.
Well, all aquatic tanks should be cycled first, I have a video called, "Things to know before you get a fish tank" (or something similar to that). You will need at least a 100 gallon tank (preferably 150 gallons to 250 gallons). The tank should be filled and all setup at least 1 week before adding the turtle. You should have great filtration (rated about 2 times as much as the tank size). Of course you should have a water heater kept to the proper temperature for the turtle species. This turtle basks (like most aquatic turtles), so, you need a 100% dry basking area with UVB lighting and again with proper temperature for the turtle species. The turtle needs deep water and a lot of water to swim in, and, an easy way to get to the dry basking area. I usually fill my turtle tanks about 75% full and then have the basking area on one side.
i have 2 questions Do hatchling turtles automatically know how to swim when they hatch? and is it safe to put a baby turtle (1 inch) in a 100 galon tank?
What about baby rare albino turtles.... I was wondering how do I care for that kind of species of a turtle a male and female? What do I need to take care of them? Do I put them in separate tanks or do I put them in the same tank? This is gonna be my first time caring for a baby turtle
What UVB light do you have, and do you replace your UVB lights every 6 to 9 months? Even if they are still giving off light, they stop producing any useable UVB after about 6 months.
I don't have a turtle but I have a snake named bubba. I took good care of him and he is living a long life. He has a heater light and has been a good pet. He was about 1 year old before I was even born and before my mom and dad were married when he arrived by some kids. That I think was about 13 years ago. Can you do a video about snakes? (P.S.: He is a Ball Python.)
The Smarteez Gamer Sorry, but, this doesn't work. The UVB rays the turtles need DO NOT go through glass. So, unless you have an uncovered outdoor pond for your turtles, you NEED A UVB light! Top of turtle tank should be screen or no top; again, not a glass top as UVB rays won't get to your turtle.
Thank you soo much for this very informative video. My sons were gifted a African black side neck ( something Like that) so now im stuck learning as much as i can about their species lord forbids it dies on me. 😣
Oh no :( Pets are never good gifts, especailly turtles. African sidenecks get up to 12 inches. You need around a 120 gallon tank (preferably larger, but 120 gallon minimum). Turtles are very expensive to get setup properly (huge tank, proper lighting, filtration, etc.). Sadly, most pet turtles don't live more than a year (they should live 50+ years). It's like a human making it less than 5 years old. Barely have a life due to the poor care turtles recieve. I do hope you can get a proper setup so that turtle can do well for decades.

make sure they can have room to breath and dont get caught up in any crack or place that can keep them from breathing so less water helps.
Lauren Bellish I’m feel so bad
thank you so much! I got two red-eared sliders 2 weeks ago. now I can keep my turtles healthy! you are very intelligent!

Larger environments are more stable.
Keeping a turtle should be assumed to be a task which will last until after you die and in which ONE mistake will cause the death of the animal which will be your fault. It is hard to go 60 years without making a mistake. The decision is more permanent than most pets, and often taken much less seriously.

They have different care than aquatic turtles, you will need to research.

I heard from another turtle TH-camr that when they grow, they shed the top layer every couple years, it is natural for them to do this.
this video was extremely helpful!!!
Work on getting a 100+ gallon tank setup correctly.
i’ll take your advice, because it seems like you know more than what the pet shop was telling me; i just ordered the 100 gal last night and once it arrives, i’ll get it set up, and have it run for at least 2 weeks. then, i’ll go ahead and transfer him to the bigger tank. i’m SO glad i found this video! thank you dearly!!!
very informative! thanks for uploading!
You're welcome
I've had my three RES turtles for 10 Years! They outgrew three tanks and now they live in a pond in my backyard. I wouldn't recommend them for beginners unless you are ready for a lot of time and work ahead of you!
The kitty is just chilling on the shelf watching him lol. Good video
i love it when the cat comes in front of the camera lol
Aww I'm glad he is with you now because he'll live his rest of live healthy and happy :) I'm considering getting a turtle ! I have a beardie now so I want my turtle to be as healthy as my lizard!
earthing explanation about turtles is the best
Thanks!
I love all the cats running all over the place. :)
I am planning to put my three turtles in an open tub with water filled in it, having a good basking area in the sun and the potted plant for shade. I'll keep them outside of that tub in night and back again in the morning.
Sounds like a lot of work to do for 50+ years the turtles will live. Not having to move them daily would be ideal.
Thank you for this informational video! My turtles thank you too =)
Thank you for all the usefull information!
+Earthling1984 Can the turtles climb onto the platform itself or does it need a ramp or something to walk onto it? and what kind of platform should I use for the turtle to bask on?
Depends how tall it is if quite tall make a ramp and any platform like a rock etc
Etta Jurima alexander and eliza hello parents
Ol
RedBaron hello I have a 20 long tank there's a space in between the tank for the filter so I can not fully fill it which is fine I think my turtle doesn't like deep water . The tank is pretty small for it but it's all I could afford for now but if you can link me some rocks or a full rock type for it to climb on. It hasn't been in a tank for years probably 6 years never had lighting or any basking spot it's very rebellious of the whole basking thing doesn't understand it. My tank is a problem for some basking products because I can't fully fill the tank and it's kinda small in width so it can't fit big products I need some thing that will take up the width of it side to side and a good easy way to climb it
what is the survival rate for freshwater baby turtles in the wild? How many of the egg clutch will make it to adulthood?
Very nice video. All of the things which are needed in one video.
What about putting a musk turtle in a 125 gallon cichild tank . I would need a semi dry basking spot . would the uv light be bad for the fish and can the musk turtle do well in the water finally would they pick on each other much? great video please get back to me man
I like to use the floating basking spots with hatchlings and juviniles. Then I use above tank basking spots for my adults.
Robert Beaudoin Make sure it's a uvB light.
So make sure he has tons of swimming area.
that turtle shell is fine its just shedding.....
DreadSpore no if the turtle dosent have enough uvb rays
DreadSpore yah shell looks fine, it should get better lighting though.
Ol
Earthling knows ....... that your wrong
the oley 321 look up the channel Turtle Girl, get educated.
good you showed this effect without uvb light, my led light provides heat when i checked it, and got a uvb light now, i dont think i need to get a light for warming, what you think?
With the filtration system, could you just wash out the filter and then put it back in, Or would you have to buy a new filter and completely replace it?
Gotta love the cat just chillin' on the ledge...lol
Could you show me which fish I could put in with my turtles if any and how i should setup my tank for them.
What a beautiful cat!
hey earthling, how did you get your 40 gallon turtle tank to get that "green swampy" look. It looks like algae and makes it look natural and awesome
This saved my turtle a lot of suffering. I knew NONE of this. Thank you!
Hahaha the cat in the background is a Ninja!
I have a problem! I heard that turtles have salmonella and I want to buy a turtle but I'm afraid if I touch him I will get sick. I also don't know how to clean his tank! Help please!
Don't you get salmonella from eating it?
FreakyJax no if you touch it and it has it then you can get it if you thouch yourself
alex sanchez Oh, didn't know that.
I believe if the shell is under 1 inch in size, it will shed salmonella. But it doesn't after it grows larger than that size. I got mild salmonella poisoning once just from picking one up at the pet store. But yeah I read that somewhere, probably the wiki
just watch ur hands everytime u touch it dont touch ur eyes, mouth
we got a turtle from my husbands co worker and it shows signs of being overfed, so how often, how long do you feed your turtles? it was not kept in a tank that was large enough, and didn't have a basking area, we knew that and were fixing that, thankfully no signs of bacterial/fungal issues. he did have a UVB light so thats good. also what are your thoughts on canister filters? and canister filters with UV sterilizers? it looks like a red eared slider but without the 'red ears' what kind do you think it is?
I feed my turtles every other day just a few pellets. Most people feed way too much. Canister filters work great, as long as a good quality brand and rated for about twice the size of your tank. It may just be a RES or some other type of similar slider. Care for it like a common slider.
wtf? that "chipping" of his shell is the turtle shedding. Literally 100% natural for the turtle to do that
Riley Benedict Nope, have had my turtle for 12 years and not ONCE has that chipping ever appeared on him because he has UVB lights in his tank.
Yeah thats not true turtles only shed if they dont have enough uvb
Riley Benedict that's exactly what I was thinking.
Ale Suarez actually it's better to give a turtle sunlight because that is what they get in the wild.
Thank you, your videos are very helpful. Much appreciated.
Hmm, I would have to see some pictures or a video. Not sure what you mean exactly by fading. It may be just normal color changing as he ages.
What kind of filter is good for turtle tank? Is Fluval 306 a right choice?
Thank you.
The first thing you should know in this video is don't leave your turtle on a table where you're not sitting right there! He'll walk right off of it. Sure they have shells but they can be damaged.
The cat scared the shit outta me ! Videobombing! Epic
and if you have any recommendations about the right place to get the tank from.. i mean like amazon or should i go somewhere to buy it from?
Releasing a pet into the wild? Wrong thing to do...
Great video 👍🏼
Should I upgrade my turtle tank to a larger one with an internal filter? My RES is about 15cm long and is knocking the filter and heater of its suction cups regularly
I was listening to him until the little guy jumped that was hella cute 😄😇
...he was pushing up with his legs, doing that himself. Not me.
who seen the tiny jumps the turtle does? so cute
Cesar better get away from his camera 😂😂
Do you need a uv light if you keep the turtle in a pound in a hot climate
We had the heat and uvb for when ours was inside and then we put her outside in a plastic pond when it was warm outside.
how small is the turtle how big of a tank can a turtle have and do they need any thing like dirt or wood chips
How often do u feed veggies , how often do u feed protein and wat calcium do u use
I fed my turtles raw hamburger meat on a toothpick and they grew very big, my mom made me give them to the local aquarium.
Earthling1984 thank you. I appreciate it
Idk y I couldn't stop laughing when the turtle was bouncing
i have 2 questions
Do hatchling turtles automatically know how to swim when they hatch?
and is it safe to put a baby turtle (1 inch) in a 100 galon tank?
thanks for the info. I was wondering how far can a turtle fall with no shell damage ? are the shells real strong? thanks.
They shouldn't drop ever.
I'm livin dat turtle 🐢 life
LMAO THE CAT " caesar get away from my camera"😅😅😅
What about baby rare albino turtles.... I was wondering how do I care for that kind of species of a turtle a male and female? What do I need to take care of them? Do I put them in separate tanks or do I put them in the same tank? This is gonna be my first time caring for a baby turtle
Is a heat lamp good for turtles too
If I have my turtle outdoors I would not need any additional lighting right?
How much will it cost altogether for a musk turtle including UVB
That cat @ 6:00 mins made my 7 y/o brother laugh so hard! lol
The cat behind is liek “give me the fooking turtle”
My dad found a soft shell turtle on the road and put it in our pond. Would it need uvb light then?
The turtle shell is shedding scoots that means that it has good led
What UVB light do you have, and do you replace your UVB lights every 6 to 9 months? Even if they are still giving off light, they stop producing any useable UVB after about 6 months.
I don't have a turtle but I have a snake named bubba. I took good care of him and he is living a long life. He has a heater light and has been a good pet. He was about 1 year old before I was even born and before my mom and dad were married when he arrived by some kids. That I think was about 13 years ago. Can you do a video about snakes? (P.S.: He is a Ball Python.)
When I always want a pet I always come across your videos saying the scary stuff.... XD
If you can't put them by a window and need to have UVB light, the window is actually better because that is what they get in the wild.
