I think you have handled the aftermath of the knock-down brilliantly. Good decision to divert to Martinique too. For the future, you might want to consider a protective case for the tablets -- which is what I have done. Mine have gone flying a couple of times, but survived the shock. Hope the repairs to body and boat are rapid. Fair winds.

Patrick Laine my thoughts exactly regarding the protective cases for the tablets. How are your sailing plans for this summer? Are you allowed to cross the French boarders? You should consider to come to some of the danish waters! My home turf (or pond) south of funen, has some fantastic sailing among a lot of small islands, thereby the name “Det Sydfynske øhav”. Love your videos and adventures. Regards from a fellow sailor.

The wonders of electronic devices these days are amazing in all fields but the problems when they don't work are serious. The old days of plane sailing, the sextant and sailing by the stars are long gone but should be a little part of the sailors training. Good luck to you now after you have probably had the worst of it and handled it well.

I live near Lymington in UK the spiritual home of the Contessa and have sailed with a friend locally who also owns a Contessa 26 - coincidentally it also started its life in Canada and arrived here via Greenland for sale. So to have crossed the Atlantic twice in such a small but seaworthy boat ........I also loved the elegant simplicity and practicality of the build and fit out.

Always erring on the side of caution is the only correct course of action when single-handed - defensive sail plans, life jacket and harness always on (in my opinion) when on deck whatever the weather and sea state, multiple copies of essential charts - so going to Martinique to have your ribs checked out is the right thing to do. You don't know how bad it is and even if it's just bruised the rest will do it good. Good luck.

Very impressive sailing, sir. I'm watching this after your safe return, but this episode had me thinking: Why no paper charts? I use a tablet for navigation as well, but I make it a habit to never leave port without a set of basic, small format charts for whichever area I intend to go to. Of course the required storage and additional weight are annoying, but I wouldn't want to miss having the peace of mind.

my medical opinion re the rib injury - I normally say if it is just bruised it'll be better in 7-10 days if it is cracked it will take about 6 weeks. Don't normally Xray them nowadays and certainly we don't strap them up. Simple regular paracetamol might help and won't leave you drowsy.

Have to admire your courage and attitude, hope you're enjoying the trip. The seat at the back looks like a great spot to soak it all in. Hope the ribs recover soon. I also use navionics and they now have a subscription which works across multiple devices of all types - android, apple, phones etc. It looks like your VHF is an AIS/GPS version of the standard horizon ? if so thats the same as mine. I got the device called a $70 Yakker from Australia which is a simple device which then takes the NMEA out from the VHF device and puts the AIS information out onto a wifi within the boat which Navionics then displays all the other AIS targets across all your devices. Its a great addition to your current setup. something to consider when your back in port. Safe travels. What wind strength will you shake out the reef in your jib and puts some main up ? Has the knock down had any impact on your sail plan approach ? I imagine it might make you more cautious with squalls around.

exactly. They also require more thought to use, so they keep you on your toes. I always plot my dead reckoning position on one on passage, and check it against the GPS. DR navigation works fine, as long as you know what you're doing and keep an accurate log. You also need charts. Paper ones.

    • @ravicabral2522
      @ravicabral2522 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

There are benefits to both digital and electronic charts.
Since electronic charts on a plotter give a much quicker and more accurate boat position and it is feasible to have more detailed data for more cruising areas, they are a better safety feature.
There is a reason why airline pilots don't fly with paper charts on their laps anymore.
Also, many a sailor has been goosed by their paper charts getting water sodden.
The traditional argument against electronic charts has always been (a) the reliance on having electricity and (b) redundancy. The latter is no longer a problem with the cost of a couple of tablets and a couple of mobile phones being much less than the copy of even 1 set of detailed paper charts for a significant voyage.
The former is less applicable with the reliability and resilience of modern electronic systems. You can even have an A5 solar panel and mobile phone (with charts) in your grab bag.
Apart from the succepability to human error in navigation, a big disadvantage (and danger) of paper charts is that they need to be manually updated and corrected. Electronic charts can be automatically updated accurately.
Also, cost and practicality means that sailors have to decide what charts to take before they start a voyage. You can't take a detail paper chart for every conceivable island and harbour. There are any many cases where sailors have had to make an emergency passage change to a sailing area for which they did not have the charts.
Paper charts are pretty useless on deck for a single hander. A good chart plotter screen is a godsend.
Paper charts are beautiful things and it is wonderful to sit and plan or review a passage with them. However, for safe and easy navigation electronic charts are much better - especially for the single hander.

In this video - With broken ribs he said he found it hard to pull the halyard. Also, in big seas and light winds, the boom slams with the rolling waves. This can damage the gooseneck.
In general, with a little boat like Waverover, you can often get the maximum safe speed just with foresail when sailing off the wind. The main comes into its own for upwind sailing.

And have you got detailed charts for the reefs and harbours on Martinique? No? That will be because, like Waverover, it is not on your passage plan and it is impossible to carry every chart
Many a great sailor of yore, (e. g. Slocum) has got into trouble because they had to detour to an area where they had no paper charts.
However, if you have electronic charts, you can download the charts when you are offshore and get into harbour safely, avoiding reefs.
Just one of the many reasons why electronic charts are better to have than paper ones.

@@SkylersRants The boat he is sailing is a good sea boat. With the right combination of wave action and wind strength it is possible for a sail boat to be knocked down under bare poles because of the wind age of the bare rig. The real danger with a knock down is if a spreader gets hit by the sea and fails, the mast will come down or fail above the lower shrouds. Also some very experienced sailors with good boats have been pitch poled rather than knocked down. There are excellent books on the experiences
      of small boat circumnavigators.

I cannot believe you are cruising without paper charts? That is not clever, do you even have a plastic sextant and sight reduction tables and the knowledge to use them?, please!!!, as an ex Sea Rescue crew, you can be uneccesarily endangering others lives

Not only do I have a paper chart of the Atlantic I also have a sextant and the knowledge to use them as a trained Canadian Naval officer. People have made assumptions that I have not responded to due to my being at sea (crossed the Pacific single handed and twice crossing the atlantic, all solo). I hope that this can be widely disseminated but I fear that folks may still make unfounded assumptions.
