  • In this special Wave Rover video I discuss the important lessons I have learned over the last 25 years of solo ocean sailing. I have put an index of the video with time stamps below to help you find or return to sections that are of more interest to you. This was a very difficult video to make as I had a lot to say but I had to edit it to keep it relatively short and interesting.

Wow, thank you. And thanks for watching. I honestly didn't think that there was going to be that much interest in an older solo sailor on a small minimalist boat. And I'm very humbled by the comments and support. Thank you one and All for making this voyage even more memorable.

Having been on Wave Rover after Alan made it home to PEI, I can attest to the fact that he is indeed a minimalist. It amazes me how much sails that you can fit into a small sailboat. It was great meeting Alan last fall and sharing a couple cold beers. Wave Rover is a great little boat to take you anywhere you would want to go. That boat will handle more then the sailor. Great job Alan.

Yep. Am in total agreement about the planning, responsibilities and rewards of an "adventure". My greatest was unassisted west-to-east crossing of US via bicycle. That was 11 years ago. I still regularly reflect on those almost 4 months and it still brings strong feelings of pride and accomplishment. Congrats to you and wishing ya GOOD LUCK with your newest Wave Rover and the additional adventures it will bring to you!

Your comments about solo-sailing do explain my own thoughts about what I'm feeling being alone at sea. There are not that many people, sailors or non-sailors, who understand that. What I learned from your lesson is that solo sailors are not birds of paradies. Good luck for your future! Andreas, SY Jovel, Germany

I have done a lot of solo sailing but on a much larger boat and I am always nervous when I go forward in weather. The fact that I’m tied into a jack line gives me scant reassurance. If I were tossed over the lifelines I imagine myself slammed up against the side of the boat unable to pull myself up and I think of the last scene of Moby Dick and Gregory Peck on the side of that whale as it dove and sounded. I have a nagging suspicion that a Jackeline simply enables the recovery boat to recover both the boat and the body at the same time!

    • @SailingWaveRover
      @SailingWaveRover  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Although I try off, I have never felt that I was in any danger and never had t rely on the jackline. I have practiced getting back on board.

Great, great video which, beyond presenting crucial material aspects, highlights the mindset and qualities of a solo sailor. No gadgets, no technology added for the sake of it, only the bare minimum. Thanks, Rover! I wish you fair winds, good weather and following seas! Take care.

Thank you, Alan, this is fascinating and informative.
I'm considering a Pacific passage in a couple of years but I'd want the boat for coastal work with four onboard on arrival in Australia, so I'd need to look at a 32.
My only yacht was a 23' sloop which was kept coastal and I admire your work with just an extra 3'.

Taking some time to prepare now for a passage in a couple of years is time well spent. Before you know it you will be shoving off. Fair winds my friend.

Thank you for sharing with us. Your experience is more than inspirational it’s also instructional. You inspire and share your knowledge selflessly. My wife and I will be sailing the St. Lawrence this summer. It will be our second attempt to reach Newfoundland. Kingston to sept isles the first time. Maybe we’ll stick our nose out into the Atlantic. Your knowledge is so appreciated.

Thank you Alan, as has been the case of all your videos, fantastic and I do not think you take risks or are a risk taker, you seem to address the risk and plan for it, understand it. Your channel as well as others, have shown me how I must think about sailing and what to plan on and how to react and know when things are beyond my control and then react to that situation. I do not think I could sail alone for a long period like you...but watching you do it does bring a smile to me and a sigh of "If only" ...well done sir and thanks again. John

Super comment. I think that you are explaining the whole idea of risk better than I did.

Wow! That was the very best Q&A I have seen! You are a minimalist that relies on your tested abilities! I hope once you have built your amazing Homestay with Mrs Wave Rover you will write a book on your adventures on Neptune’s domaine! Bravo!

@@SailingWaveRover Seriously impressed I've done some basic designs on my 3d printer took a long time but didn't prove very robust but hey . Love the practical approach to sailing can be out there doing instead of saving !

Excellent stuff! Your sailing philosophy reminds me of Roger Taylor “Ming Ming I II”
My goal is to sail Cali-Hawaii with a Montgomery 17 solo. Learning the ropes sailing the Great Lakes currently.
Thanks for the wealth of knowledge and inspiration!
