Beautiful, moving, detailed and engaging - Alan is firing on all cylinders with this one. Really feels like embarking on a voyage. Can't wait for others to view this and comment. Onward!
Honestly Alan, Please make a LONG video that is just Wave Rover cruising through the infinite blue to the noises of the wind and waves. That segment was so relaxing. Great narration and oceanic philosophy, One of your best videos yet.
All the best Alan....... fair winds and blue skies all the way across the pond. Hopefully you get to come to the UK and lets hope you never need to use the drogue ever.
Ah! beginning at minute 9:47 such a beautiful talk about the truth of what you’re doing, along with the perfect visual and musical accompaniment. Thanks so very much for your heartfelt candor.
Magic! The self steering was just one of so many challenges both big and small that needed to be met in order to get to this moment … the big leap. Congratulations … well done. ⛵️🇨🇦⚓️🙂 PS: These last two videos have had a contemplative feel and rightly so. Time to crack on and live that adventure. The videos are brilliant but don’t forget to capture some good quality still images that you’ll need for the book!
You’re hitting your stride Alan…That was a real pleasure to watch. Great choice of music, loved watching the shadows play across the boat….and, we’re off. Nothing but open ocean ahead. Thanks for bringing us along.
Don't hesitate to share the problems you have on your mind. I am sure all the fans will jump on the opportunity to help you out. Fair winds and safe travel!
Excellent offshore video! After thousands of miles of coastal sailing, Wave Rover2 is in her intended element of deep blue travel. I reflect back to the early days of construction and the naysayers and wonder what their thoughts are upon reviewing this video? From the start with your vision and sound principles for singlehanded sailing, Andy's design to fulfill those needs, superb construction and finally excellent seamanship there was never a doubt my friend. Congratulations,
Best video to date. Wave Rover is looking very ship shape. If anyone is wondering, the MkIII works like a charm. I built one from Alan”s plans and mounted it on my Nordica 20. Outstanding.
Wow, I'd been waiting for the new Rover voyage so eagerly and yet somehow missed it! Never mind, I'm a few months behind but gaining fast. Congratulations and I sincerely wish that your travels reward the effort involved a hundred times over!
Wonderful, peaceful professional start-up for Atlantic. You can tell the mastery by being able to manage difficult complex entities and details with relaxed handling, you fit this definition clearly Alan! Greetings from Finland, Janne 👍👋
Totally amazing to watch you hoist the sail on this huge adventure. Safe passage to you and Wave Rover. Thinking of Mrs Rover also, what a wonderful woman to be OK with you forging your adventure. It must be love❤❤
One of the best if not the best video you ever made dear Alan. I truly enjoyed it. Congratulations to the brilliant story telling and great music. Very impressive and motivating to be able to follow you and your journey. Good luck dear friend
Captain Slocum somehow had Spray rigged to self steer. I never did figure that one out. 😅 Glad you got yourself sorted when you did. See you in the next episode.
The Spray wasn't exactly rigged with any self steering gear. It was the 1890s. Such things hadn't been invented yet. That the boat was able to be set on a course, the tiller lashed and she'd just go in a straight line is more a testament to the design of the boat than anything else. A lot of traditional wooden boats, especially ones who have a direct design lineage to working boats from the 19th century will do that. A couple modern examples viewable on TH-cam are the traditional chine hull boat, Rediviva on the Salt & Tar channel and the Atkin designed boat, Arabella on the Acorn To Arabella channel will self steer in the right conditions without modern gear engaged. I suspect that my Tahiti Ketch will also do this.
Funny watching you leave Virginia for a one month passage to the Azores when back on June 21 the blog for the Setka sailboat build Cagarro had pictures of wave rover 2 at dock in the Azores
@@RoversAdventure I got that, along with time required to edit, and getting ahead to keep weekly videos when there’s unexpected events. But I thought it was funny that I saw the blog a month ago.
It seems to have taken forever for you to start crossing the Atlantic in WR2. But now, finally you are on your way. Great news. I look forward to your arrival in Europe. If you are coming into the Med you will be passing by my home. I wish you a safe and comfortable journey.
Great self steering story. Thanks for sharing. In one scene, you have your handheld VHF radio resting above your hatch. Made me nervous to think it could just slide off into the water. I was sailing a 26' boat off the coast of Georgia (US) once. I had put a cell phone in the kangaroo pouch of my sweat shirt and I told myself "Now you can't fix anything as that phone will likely slip out if you start bending over, etc..." Well, something was jammed at the base of my mast and I got down on my belly to fix it. My phone slipped out and bounced overboard. I still have the image in my mind of it falling down through the water. Darn. I'm in the process of converting a head in my 44' sailboat to a pantry/laundry room. The shelves are in my garage with the stain drying... I'm trying to decide if I should glue the fiddles on with regular wood glue or epoxy... I'll probably try the epoxy but it's harder to work with. Fair winds.
Really enjoying the backstory voice over format Alan! BTW, i experienced a similar learning curve with my Cape Horn servo pendulum windvane on my first offshore passage. I realized in my case i needed to relearn to sail the boat with entirely different sensitivities. Once i managed that, like you i became a passenger on my own boat even alone. Fair winds in Ireland.
Wishing for you just the right balance of peace and excitement. The name of my boat is "Spirit of Adventure" - but it really fits you, your journey and your boat. Fair winds to you.
I'm not sure I'd be able to give you any advice, but it seems to me from my seat that the bar movements are too important. It might be a good idea to limit the bar's travel to make the path less slippery and more stable. let it a try !!! as we say in France "bon vent".
I enjoyed the lengthy anecdote about your trials and tribulations with the Mk III self-steering, but I'm curious to know what the solution turned out to be. You said you set it up when you reached the bay, and it finally started working! You then said you began to truly understand trim-tab self-steering. However, you didn't say what you may have done differently this time to make it work, or what it was about it that you'd begun to truly understand. Apparently, it wasn't working properly, then it was! Still wondering . . . This was a very enjoyable episode, particularly the segments where you were just sailing. No voice-over or background music, just the sounds of sailing. Fantastic.
Thanks for sharing the information on the series drogue. Where did you get the sizing information for a 3,000 lb working load craft. I could not find anything smaller than a 10,000 lb working load design. I'm interested in a design for a 1000 lb working load. Any pointers?
Hi have been following the journey since the build. Safe passage Allen. P.S. If you have a moment in the future, I would like to know if your self-steering design would work on a Precision 21 sailboat?
Another really well made video, I like this new style! But I bet you won't be as contemplative during a strong gale 😉 Is this you reading from your upcoming book? If so, it sounds like a book I'll enjoy reading. I'm curious though, what was it that finally clicked with the wind vane? Did it just not perform that well in low winds? Was the area of the vane too small?
seen a few of earlier dvds a few years ago on other boat - Not sure my health a good idea for another boat,,. Am 74 and over sitting at home on land, have 10,000 offshore miles solo from earlier years.. Know my kid would not be happy.. Will save this link and watch them all in future
Motor runs smooth. That hatch door could be problematic any splash or rain when you close it will pour water inside? Side hinge or double door work better? Just curious how it works for you
@@RoversAdventure ok, well, the Chinese let the bottom batten flap on the breeze so when you were on the tack with the sail windward of the boom it would be up against the boom and pull but when on the tack with the bottom batten leeward it the bottom panel would be depowered. I guess it doesn't matter if you don't care about the asymmetrical pull of the sail on the different tacks

Motor runs smooth. That hatch door could be problematic any splash or rain when you close it will pour water inside? Side hinge or double door work better? Just curious how it works for you
So what was the problem with the self steering?
I'm kind of curious, with a typical junk rig the bottom panel is loose footed so it pulls the same on both tacks. Why didn't you do that too?
This is the way that Practical Junk Rig shows as standard
