I just discovered the Great Brazilian singer/musician/producer ED MOTTA, his brilliant music, and his library of incredible bass lines!
I'll break down, arguably, his MOST famous bass line ("Marta" aka "Smile" from his 2013 release, AOR), show you how it's played, show you who played it (Mr. Groove), explain why it's so popular in Brazil, and explain how Ed himself comes up with most of the bass lines on his records.
It's part Jazz, part Bossa Nova, part R&B, part Funk, even part Yacht Rock and it's incredible. Check it out.

He is pretty famous in Brazil, but his songs are more appreciated in Europe. Funny Fact is that he owns a collection of more than 10 thousands of LP discs at his home. This man breathes music.

This album (Ed Motta - AOR) has two versions: one with portuguese lyrics and another with english lyrics. When he's on tour, he sings those songs according to the audience. 🙂

@@henry247 that's kind of intuitive: the richest and deepest the rhythmic tradition is in a given area, the more valuable rhythm session players will emerge. UK, with some great bass players and a number of excellent drummers too, being the exception.
At this point, i think that having "Brazil" in the title is just a way of instantly summoning a big crowd of viewers

Check out his uncle's work as well. Tim Maia is a legend of Brazilian groove, specially singing with the Vitória Régia band. They peak at the Imunização Racional albums.

Ed Motta has a record collection that is world wide known.
Saw him in Stockholm at the jazz club Fasching about ten years ago.. Man, he played the shit out of the rhodes. A pure monster!
And he’s a funny guy as well. He’s talk between the songs was something else than the mainstream bs.
Furthermore, I think he’s uncle is Tim Maia, the giant artist from Brazil who sadly died at the age of 55.

His harmonies, melodies, and contributions are just beyond reality. Here is a curiosity: most of Ed's compositions are performed in two languages, each receiving a unique sense, but preserving the original melody. He's definitely a great musician and not acknowledged enough in Brazil nowadays for the fact that music in Brazil has been going through a bit of controversy, having great unappreciated talented musicians.

I'm European, discovered Ed Motta in 2004 in Brazil while grabbing some cd's in a shop, still today I don't get tired listening him and have almost all his music. I would have loved to see him performing with Al Jarreau, I consider him as the Brazilian Al Jarreau. Would also be great him to perform with my favorite funky musician, the great Nile Rodgers.

Ed Motta is an undervalued genius
I discovered Ed Motta two years ago, listening this great bass line played in a Ed's show by the stunning bass player Fernando Rosa. (Now Fernando is on tour with Lenny Kravitz). Brasilian music is surprising, from the bossa nova school to the contemporary scene it has reached the highest level...and increases!!!
Thank you for listening to his music! He is about to release his 14th studio album on October 20th, and has three singles out! Safely Far, Slumberland and Deluxe Refuge. The latter has been receiving a lot of attention from radio stations in Europe and Asia.
(p.s.: Although many have suggested his uncle's work, who has an amazing discography, they are not so similar.)

It's worth remembering that Ed Motta is the nephew of Tim Maia, the godfather of Soul in Brazil. All of his musical references were taught by his uncle.
Ed Mota's background is so great, He's the nephew of a Brazilian Music Legend, Tim Maia. So, some of his background comes from his uncle, and Tim Maia is the incarnation of Brazilian Funk and Soul back on the 1970's.
Some of Bossa Nova greatests songs were written by Tim Maia. As a Brazilian, I recomend you to also listen to Tim Maia as well.

Hi Paul! If you're taking suggestions, you might want to listen to his most famous songs: "colombina", "Manuel" and "fora da lei", just to gauge his caliber. Also, it's important to have in mind that he is the nephew of another brazilian popular music titan, Tim Maia. If you liked Ed, you're gonna have a blast with Tim! Both uncle and nephew were largely influenced by african american musical genres and were the main exponents of R&B, Soul, Funk (original) and others in Brazil.
I find Ed much more interesting than Tim musically. IMHO.

A friend had gone to work in Brazil, twenty years ago, in Florianopolis and had brought back a lot of records there [France]. We had listened to it 'til we drop! I was rather, at the time, attracted by the Samba-Reggae style, Axé, Batucada, or Baile Funk... He started out in like dance/RnB sound, elements of funk, fusion, soul, bossa, jazz and even flirted with a little of free jazz. His uncle was the "father of Brazilian soul", Tim Maia, who Rolling Stone Brazil magazine named the greatest singer of Brazilian music!

I'm brazilian and I used to listen to Ed Motta's songs. To be honest, I don't have knowledge enough to say something technique about his music. But, I need to agree with you, every time when I listen to him I feel the emotions pulsating in his bass. I listened to him waiting for the vocals techniques more than bass line. And I really love the funny and smart way that he imitates a huge range of instruments. I used to listen to "Colombina", "Fora da Lei" and "Vendaval".

This guy is good, he has a swing that seems to have added several styles, seasoned with Brazilian musicality. If I had to make a comparison with ED Motta's music, I would say that it is the best, the finest food we have in Brazil.

Ed Motta's great. Tons of Steely Dan influence, so no surprise I like his stuff. The entire "AOR" album this song is from is particularly wonderful. The next song on the album after this one, "1978/Leave the Radio On" has killer bass on it too (and some really cool Rhodes licks). Also, check out the beautiful song "Dondi," where the bass line has this really fun move up an octave for popped hammer-on that is straight out of Boz Scaggs's Lowdown.

Hey P! Great video as always. Let me tell you, an Ed Motta fan and bass player myself, it seems to be going on kind of a collective discovery of his music by bass players all around. Every day I found out another of my favourite bass channels covering his work.
If you are looking for suggestions, I would recomend you to check out "Piquenique". It was his first bassline I learned by ear, it has a great sense of motion and crazy articulations just in "Smile". Also there is "Your Satisfaction is Mine", although a synth bass, is a crrrrazzzy funky crunchy line.
If you dig brazilian funky music, check out the group Azymuth. They are one of the founding fathers of acid jazz and they music is every bit as tastefully groovy as you could imagine.
I'm from Argentina, and I'm a big fan of Ed Motta. He's one of the best Latin American singers ever. Although he has recorded more adventurous music, I really like he's "breakthrough" album "Manual Prático Para Festas, Bailes E Afins Vol. 1". One hit after the other, and great bass lines too.

Robinho Tavares is such a nice guy beyond being a beast bassist. I never met him but I once posted my own cover of this tune on Insta playing this very bassline and tagged Robinho. The guy answered with a fire emticon, I was soooooo proud, and that my friends is the sign of a really cool cat.
I jammed once with Ed Mota during a party and on the next day he said about my performance to a friend of mine without knowing he already know me. It was a huge compliment. But a couple of days after he jammed with Robinho, who is a close friend of mine also, and he said "omg what São Paulo has in its water to have so many amazing bass players". Other huge compliment as well. Later he invited Robinho to be part of his band.
I'm in love with this video. Watched 487 times. Thanks! You've asked for a suggestion: I love Ed's voice solo on "É muita gig véi", from Aystelum. Rhythmically, he starts like out of the planet, creating an amazing musical effect. Great trumpet solo, from Andrés Perez, as well.

You should definitely check on Tarzan Brazilian soundtrack, which was performed by Ed Motta as well. It's one of my favorite movie soundtracks ever
