Is BRAZIL the new BASS CAPITAL of the WORLD?

  • A few years back I caught a crazy video on TH-cam of a 13 year old kid tearing it up on bass. I didn’t even know who he was at the time, but I was completely blown away. I later found out that his name was Michael Pipoquinha and that he was from Brazil.
Most people might only know Brazil for samba or The Girl from Ipanema, but that's only a fraction of the story. Brazilian music is a whole world of its own with some unbelievable bass players that everyone needs to know about!
In this video we’re shining the spotlight on 10 AMAZING bassists from Brazil.
    You’re going to learn:
    - All about the ‘Brazilian Jaco’.
    - And the first time I heard Munir Hossn.
    - Why Glecio Nascimento is one of the scariest players on the planet right now.
    - And why I need a pass on some of the pronunciation!
As always, see you in the shed…
    Scott :)

Just a tip for Portuguese pronunciation:
Whenever you see an "NH" like in "PipoquinNHa", "BraguiNHa" this nh should pronounce as something like a "Ñ" in Spanish. Like "Lasaña" this "ñ" we understand here in Brazil as a syllable structureed with "nh".

My dad was a jazz musician from the 70s to the 80s here in Brazil and, being in the scene, he was friends (or atleast acquaintances) with Nico Assumpção. He told me that sometimes Nico would listen to a really complicated bass solo just once and play it back masterfully. He specifically remembers a time in which he learned and played back a long Jaco Pastorius solo after listening to it once or twice. He also says he was a nice guy, but kind of weird and unhealthy and addicted to coke

    Dear Scott,
My name is Wagner. I'm a musician (singer/songwriter) from Porto Alegre, Brazil.
I've been also an English teacher for over 20 years, therefore I can help you a bit on Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation on the names you're trying to figure out how to do so.
I've developed an interesting way to use English phonemes as a reference for non native PT speakers.
I'm also a native Portuguese-BR teacher, so if you ever need tips or lessons, I'll be really happy to help. ;)
Anyway, please check below how to pronounce the names.
    Munir = pronounced /Moo-near/
    Thiago Espírito Santo = /Chee-ah-go Is-pee-ree-too Sun-too/
    M. Pipoquinha = /Pee-paw-king-ah/
    Júnior Braguinha = /Bra-ging-ah/
    Glécio Nascimento = /Glass-ee-o Nah-see-men-toe/
    Fernando Rosa = /Fair-nun-do Haws-uh/
    Robinho Tavares = /Haw-bing-oh Tah-vah-riss
    Ricardinho Paraíso = /He-car-jing-oh Pah-ra-ee-zo/
    A. Maia = /My-ah/
This last name might be a bit complex: Nico Assumpção = /Knee-co Ah-soon-sung_oong/
Well, I really hope these tips help you.
Take care and feel free to contact me on my e-mail, if you wish: wagnertorre@gmail.com

Terrific post and looong overdue!! Your suggestion at the end, namely spotlighting bassists from a single country each time, is also a great idea. Having said that, I strongly suggest a “Brazil vol. 2 clip”. Brazil is a huge country whose music is among the most stylistically diverse and sophisticated (rhythmically AND harmonically) on the planet. Its pool of world class musicians is vast in direct proportion. All of which is to say, you’ve barely even scratched the surface. Here’s a short list just off the top of my head:
Ney Conceiçao, Sergio Groove, Neguinho Zaza, Kleytton Farney, Zuzo Moussawer.
Thanks again for another fantastic installment!
