I loved this track and despite my love of Prince, I think the Chaka version was definitive complete with vid and cultural capture ❤
Early Prince was phenomenal. Still waiting was one of my favs, but Dirty Mind was the ultimate! Love you, Prince forever!
Just finished watching "Purple Rain" for the billionth time! Great song & also still get goosebumps from Freddy Washington's stellar bassline on "Forget Me Nots"!
I only ever heard the Chaka Khan version! Wow what a cool story.
Great video. Can't get enough Prince!
Not sure why this was suggested to me, but I’m happy I watched it. Fond memories for me with your excellent commentary.
I'm 48 years old and I've been listening to the Chaka Khan version for 40 years and I've never ever heard any other versions until now. This is eye opening, I never even knew Michael Jackson had a sister called Rebe Jackson, Where have I been, lol. This is a great video. I could have died and never ever knew the history of this song, written by Prince originally. Jeez. Thanks
Damn! This was a Great Breakdown and Analogy Of This Great Song, by a True Genius...and Me being a Huge Prince fan, even I never realized so many People have covered This Song...Wow!
Appreciate this detailed and knowledgeable tribute to The Artist. So many channels try to dissect Skipper, but most fail. Your channel is a haven for music breakdowns and respectful analysis. Also that you're a POC, gives it an A+.
Perhaps because of my age I grew up with this as a Chaka Khan song. Then as I got more and more into Prince as I grew older I found out its origins.... it then became yet another contributing factor in my overwhelming admiration of Prince as a musical genius. RIP Prince, we'll miss you forever.
I worked in a record store in the UK and we got Prince in on import I plated that first album to death and people didn't get it, I said over and over this guy is going to be big, so glad I was right, HAPPY BIRTHDAY THE MAN
My wife and I just saw The Purple Madness at the Fox in Riverside, CA! They totally got down and embodied this and all other song they played! RIP The Purple One! 🙏🏽
I enjoy when you compare & differentiate versions of the same song. 😊
What a superb tune that is ...
I always thought, "I Feel For You!" was a song written and sung by Chaka Khan!... Well, now I learned that the song was written and sung by Prince during the year I was born! Nice!
Here's to the greatness of Prince--his sheer musicianship, prosody and songwriting is truly an inspiration & thanks for reminding us of that and your knowledge of the history & ear for the licks is mesmerizing brother! Keep on!
3:14 ...Prince dancing through those fingers as he hears Nathan Watts. This hook indeed exists as a star exists in the universe. Bless you, for this wonderful breakdown of true greats of music that is funky!
Man! You are incredible. I can listen to your stuff all day!
Wow! Never knew it was covered by the Pointer Sisters, Mary Wells and Rebbie Jackson! Great analysis and history!
Great job again. Thanks for bringing high quality analysis to the Soul/ R&B/Jazz cross pollinations of the past. There is not enough of these videos out there to enjoy. ( more Grover W. please).
Dude, I love this commentary! Thank you!
Wow, this video just popped up in my algorithm. I’m a guitar player but I have alot of love for bass playing by association. This was a great break down. Subbed off the strength of this video. Sending love from the UK. 🇬🇧🙏🏿
I took the drummers chair in a band that was covering Princes Feel For You in 1980. I was told some dude named Randy Jackson gave them the cassette.
Hi found your channel by chance, what a lovely appreciation of this song. Like many people I can recall the very first time I heard this song and like you I played it again and again. I couldn’t get over its beauty and the winsome lyrics. One of my very favourites, I also love Fruit tree as a very succinct observation of the fame that eluded Nick through his life and Northern Lights. I wonderful love song.
Thank you for the video.
I love your breakdowns of Iconic tunes Paul! Please continue making these awesome videos!
Any song Prince wrote? He's always gonna be the winner. No matter who tries to rewrite, Prince is a genius when it comes to music bottom line.
Long live the King of guitar and bass playing Long Live the King. When it comes to instruments period
i just found your chanel, this video its just AMAZING! i was in midle school here in MEXICO when that song came in with CHAKA KHAN and everybody danced it after school in the basketball courts,KEEP IT UP THIS AMAZING WORK YOU DO.(greettings from MEXICO)
This is incredible ❤❤❤❤❤
I had NO idea anyone other than Chaka covered this Prince tune. Kudos!!
Didn't even know he wrote it. And I pride myself in knowing such things
Absolutely loved the history and breakdown. Subbed!
Excellent video!!!
Thank you Paul, you read my mind. I thought a lot about Prince lately.
Two things, if you haven't already analyzed Forget-me-nots, I hope you do, the bass is spectacular!
Also Paul, I so appreciate your enthusiasm as well as your deep dives musically and stylistically.
As soon as you said, "The Crusaders" I had to pull up Those Southern Nights and I still favor the first and last tracks, such a good band. That album came out when I was 13 when I was playing bass in jazz band, oh the memories, thanks Paul!
I had the Chaka Khan version on a 12" extended play here in Australia. Never realised it was written by Prince.
Chaka's song I've loved Always. I was a kid when this song dropped and it's been on my playlists ever since.
The Chaka version is amazing from start to finish. Also, is it the first ever recording featuring an artist twice at different age of their life? Stevie is on it as a kid and also as an adult.
You are such an awesome teacher!
Wow you taught me a lot. I never knew the pointer sisters covered this nor rebe jackson as well as the others except chaka of course. You made a point about the arrangement staying close to how prince did it. I wonder if that is on condition of prince's approval. We know how protective he was about lending out his songs. This was a great video thanks.
Absolute fabulous job. Thank you. 👏👏👏👏
Another incredible video! Thank You!
I had it backwards 🤦🏾♂️ I thought Rebbie did her cover first and thus, Chaka’s version was totally different. Didn’t realize the other versions after Prince!!! 😮
