The spikes wasnt close enough to impale you in iron maidens. They either didn't touch you or just piercing the skin... Depending on your size.
The torture was leaving you there, unable to move without getting impaled. Sooner or later you'd collapse into the spikes.
The whole "instantly killed"-thing is from movies and games.
In actuality it's not real they were made up by an archaeologist where he placed nails/spikes in it and essentially made a hoax of the whole thing
